Forever in love with the quiet space reserved for Jiang Yanli and Jiang Cheng’s relationship. We don’t get much of their dynamic together in canon bc wwx is the narrator/protag, but I have so many thoughts about the narrow window of time when wwx had left and they knew she was going to leave to get married but it was just them. Trying to pick up the broken tatters of their family legacy. Do you ever think about how much guilt yanli must of had, to leave Jiang Cheng alone? Guilt, that she wanted this one thing (Jin Zixuan) and was basically abandoning her brother- her brother, who would never hold it against her. Who would urge her to do what makes her happy, to reach for that happiness no matter the cost (him, lotus pier).

Whenever I try to imagine relationship between adult Jin Ling and Jiang Cheng, it's always JC going "boo-hoo, now that he's all grown up, he will fly away from the nest and forget all about me and leave my old bones to rot as things should be" and JL going "FINALLY. FINALLY IT'S MY TURN TO FUSS OVER YOU".

Something like this:

JL: When was the last time you touched grass? No. No, look me in the eyes. Answer the question. When was. The last time. You touched grass? it’s the way jiang cheng could not accept yanli and wei wuxian’s sacrifices, the way he could not fathom their selflessness because each of their actions were viewed by him through a very self-centric lens–in that, how does wei wuxian taking a stand for the remaining wens affect him, affect jiang cheng? how does yanli giving up her life for wei wuxian affect him, affect jiang cheng? it’s always about him, his feelings, his anger, his grief, his sense of abandonment. the problem here is that yeah, he loved his sister and yes, he did care for wei wuxian but what are these words worth when he could not allow them to make their own choices and respect those choices? what does it mean that he’d rather try to slash wen ning’s corpse and throw the wens under the bus because he doesn’t want wei wuxian to remain in the burial mounds and see what comes after? what does it mean that jiang cheng could not digest yanli’s sacrifice and never bothered to tell jin ling about the truth of his mother’s death, letting her son continue to hate the man she gave up her life for, out of love at that?

jiang cheng never respected what was most important to wei wuxian and clung to his idea of what he thought would be best for wei wuxian. thing is, if wei wuxian had backed out, had left the wens, in some impossible hypothetical universe––he would never be able to live with himself again. saving and supporting the wens was extremely important to wei wuxian. similarly, if yanli ever got a do-over, she would still save wei wuxian and give up her life because that is what she believed in, that is what her love for him compelled her to do. and in both instances, jiang cheng could not let go of his own reactionary emotions to their decisions to respect what these decisions represented.

he spit on both their sacrifices: let the lies about yanli’s death breed hatred for wei wuxian and led the siege to the burial mounds to kill the very people wei wuxian risked his life to protect. and for both these instances, the fandom has spoken ad nauseam about how it’s understandable for jiang cheng to feel abandoned, that he is always “left behind”. but did he ever have the courage to truly stick by them? stick by them, even in memory, even in their ideals, even in their last living and dying wishes?

The thing about JC's animosity towards LWJ is, barring LWJ being an ass to JL, it's entirely reactive.

Does JC know why Hanguang-jun one day returned from closed seclusion and decided to act as though JC had pissed in his congee? No! Does he care? It's not actively harmful to YMJ and JC frankly has bigger fish to hunt down than why LXC's younger brother has moods, and it's just a blip in the political situation, so also no.

Is he going to smile and be gracious about it? Fuck no, and fuck you for suggesting it, he's not going to stir shit but he's sure going to sneer back whenever LWJ decides to show his ass. How even are you supposed to be gracious at someone who's decided hates you? (JC knows LWJ's uncle wasn't wounded at the Siege, which tends to be his immediate assumption when he meets someone who hates him for no reason, so. Who the fuck knows.)

Does it occupy even the slightest of his thoughts or otherwise bother him? Definitely not, LWJ's entire existence fades back into Shit JC Doesn't Care About the moment he's not being offensively rude or inconvenient during a night-hunt.

Jin ling is such a funny character to me bc if you think abt it, based on his position within the story/among the other characters, he should be the protagonist. Slowly uncovering your family's fucked up dynamics and histories w each other is absolutely a protagonist thing to go through. But he's not. Instead we get the weird gay slightly evil uncle who's been dead for 13 years.
