actually jiang cheng is the most emotionally normal character in the untamed. everyone else is either like "oh these unthinkable tragedies have happened to me... time to bear it like a hero and immediately continue doing good and noble deeds" or "hmm. unthinkable tragedies have happened to me, so i must construct an intricate plan to take down society" while jiang cheng is like "unthinkable tragedies have happened to me. i need to have a breakdown before continuing with my life"

No one understands Jiang Cheng like I do except that’s the point. Jiang Cheng’s character is only truly understandable by the reader. And you have to make an effort. The narration fights you at every turn. The characters themselves aren’t interested in doing any heavy lifting. Wei Wuxian is too tired and hurt. Lan Wangji can’t let himself see anything but the mirror of his failure. There is no convenient Wen Ning to blurt out the truth for him. None see him clearly. There is only Jiang Cheng, his words, and his actions.

Like there’s such severe disconnect that you can’t even blame on the massive time skip and death. Maybe at one point it was harmless and intentional- more about smoothing things over “of course Uncle loves you! You’re his son!” but slowly the disconnect grows and grows. When did Wei Wuxian start believing the narrative Jiang Cheng’s parents perpetrated of him being less then. When was the final nail. And why do I have the feeling it came when believing otherwise meant facing the enormity of what he had given up- and facing his overwhelming resentment of it.

Insane to me how confident Wei Wuxian is about how much he knows and understands Jiang Cheng while managing to completely misunderstand him on a fundamental level.

Thinking about the impact of Chengqing (Wen Qing x Jiang Cheng) kind of being a thing in Untamed... it changes the dynamic of the Golden Core transfer so much and not at all... Wei Wuxian was always going to come to the conclusion he needed to give Jiang Cheng his core but in Untamed did Wen Qing help? Did she leave some books out about her research? Did she think to herself: well, if he's offering... and not argue as hard as she should of about Wei Wuxian's desperate solution? Did she think, well, at least the boy I could of liked can have this. At least I can give him this. It changes from a purely pity/scientific motivated move into something much deeper and something slightly unfair - not that Wei Wuxian ever knows. Not that he would argue with her if he did. Wild.
