What's your reverse unpopular opinion for jiang fengmian

Oh wow, you caught me in your trap, anon!! Okay, I can do this.

While Jiang Fengmian was, like, grown in a laboratory in a big vat marked "guys specifically designed to make least-carpet hate them," I do think he's 1) really interesting, 2) very realistic, and 3) perfectly designed to produce the trio of Jiang Yanli, Jiang Cheng, and Wei Wuxian, who I adore.

I'm always referring back to this interview where MXTX talks about her process, but here's the relevant part:

I think the environment a person grows up in is a very important factor. The parent generation’s joy and sorrow will create an increasingly greater impact on their children... [The parents'] designs are based on the main cast, to contrast or to complete... For example, first, I think of what kind of person Wei Wuxian is. Then, I think of what kind of parents could have such a child. I base his parent’s characters on his character...Looking at it from within the story, it’s that parents will inevitably influence their children. But from a structural writing standpoint, it’s the children that influence the parents.

So Jiang Fengmian exists to produce and explain my faves. Thanks, Jiang Fengmian!

I think MXTX is really observant and specific about familial dynamics, and Jiang Fengmian is extremely recognizable as a specific type of conflict-avoidant dad whose combination of Unprocessed Life Stuff (re: growing up and being unhappy about adulthood—which for him is being a sect leader) and resentment of his wife make him distant with his more challenging child, who to him resembles his wife. I think in some ways that's why people respond strongly to him and to Madame Yu, because they're so recognizable.

Finally, I also think there are a lot of interesting gaps to think about if you want to flesh him out—what actually was going on with Cangse Sanren and Wei Changze? Was his and Madame Yu's marriage always that bad, or did it deteriorate over time, and how? Did he just never want to parent? (There's a brilliant genderswap fic called "you will never need another lover," where he's a woman and Yu Ziyuan is a man, and I find him so much more likeable as a woman who sincerely never wanted to be a parent but couldn't get out of it. Also, male Yu Ziyuan is a total asshole but also a way better husband than male Jiang Fengmian, and so their marriage changes in really interesting ways over the course of the story.) There's a lot of room to develop him in various ways.

i would recommend anything written by roquen and/or welcome_equivocator on ao3, just to start! specifically roquen’s “it’s worth it every time” series, which is a very subtle canon-divergent fix-it series based on the premise of jgs denying jgy permission to marry qin su. roquen tends to write longer fic, whereas welcome_equivocator is great at writing shorter form or oneshot fic.

WOH modern au, chronic pain, unspecified chronic illness, angst, trust issues, vulnerability, grief/mourning, sharing a bed, T. i literally just finished rereading it this morning! a brief glance at wenzhou's early days, but set in modern day. im very weak for conversations in the dark, after some guards have been lowered and possibilities to live your life a different way, a better way, seem tangible. there is also a sequel to this!

hunger by lastembers. WOH modern au, chronic pain, unspecified chronic illness, referenced cannibalism, canon-typical violence, domesticiation of a monster, M. also a fic i finished rereading the other day! what if wenzhou were neighbours, but wen kexing eats people? u know that im very into cannibalism as this metaphor for something else and as a stepping stone to experience real emotional intimacy! i also really like it when the very palpable sensation of hunger functions to talk about very related things, very visceral things, that can also be felt in the body.

there is a line here i particularly liked:

"Aren't you hungry?" Zhou Zishu asks. Wen Kexing is watching him like he's the most interesting thing in the world. "No," Wen Kexing says. Zhou Zishu knows its a lie. He thinks maybe Wen Kexing is always hungry.

MDZS modern au, wangxian, little forest AU, hunger as a metaphor for grief, farming as a metaphor for healing, food as a metaphor for love, T. lan wangji moves into his dead mother's house and tries to remember how it is to live. its been a while since i read this but i still remember how the grief felt like a fishbone stuck in my throat.

and you must keep your soul/ like a secret in your throat by athena_crickey. MDZS, The Untamed, modern au, modern cultivation, supernatural elements, vampires, culture clash, case fic, grief/mourning, complicated family dynamics, the weariness of being old and immortal, what it means to be alive, E. wei wuxian is an ancient vampire and lan wangji is a young (youngish) cultivator who seeks him out for a case. i particularly liked seeing glimpses of wei wuxian's earlier lives through fictional academical articles and reports at the end of each (i think it is each?) chapter, and sometimes through their conversations. i like it when there is a really old (really, really old) being there and through them, you are challenged to confront what being alive for such a long time does to a person, in what ways it reshapes them.

in the water grass, in the green by nerdzeword, twigofwillow. The Untamed, modern with magic, wangxian, angst, illness, curses, witches, river spirits, family, gardening, G. lan wangji's mother falls ill. he asks the wen witches across the street for help. this fic, too, has the theme of finding solace and comfort in cooking, food, and nature! i love lan wangji being this transcended being between a person and a river! there is also some anticipatory grief here and complex family dynamics; even though madam lan isnt dead, it is hard for lan wangji to reach her because she is not accepted by his family. he has feelings about that.

i go through phases with fanfiction, wavering between never reading any and then reading it consistently over a period of time. so my ao3 account only has bookmarks from the last year or so, so i’ll just include those! i did read some reeeally good fics for pairings that i was really into in the past, but i won’t include them here

as for my username, i used to have the apologist format with another character for my finsta, and i because obsessed over mu qing in my recent read through of tgcf. so i’ll defend him from the haters heh.

ok fics. no particular order.

1. Resurrection by heyholmesletsgo

one thing about me is that im going to eat up every songxiao fix-it fic i come across. this one i think follows the logic of the untamed rather than just mdzs, but i don’t think it’s a big change either way. this fic is so beautiful i thought about it for weeks afterward. it’s pretty short, but the slow, gentle pining as xiao xingchen returns to the world, the way they figure out communication, it’s all so good.

2. some new beginning by liesmyth

i got into good omens after season 2 being released this past summer, and i have to say the fics have been very hit or miss for me. the characterizations in fics are always some strange combination of characterizations of season 2 crowley and season 1 crowley and book crowley. this is post-season 1 though so this isn’t really an issue. i loved this one. i think my favorite form of aziracrow is when they’re both just idiots following the momentum of their feelings without really realizing the significance of their actions until, well, they live together hahah. highly recommend this one for that dynamic! it’s also pretty short.

3. Protagonist Rehabilitation Programme by cinnamonsnaps

this one i actually read entirely on my flight from japan last week after randomly stumbling across it. it’s an SVSSS AU where the original luo binghe transmigrates(?) into shen yuan’s world. im not usually a fan of AU fiction because i think much of the time, the events of the source material are very much what shape the personalities of the characters, but this one works for me. it’s so good at matching the tone and writing style of mxtx while being funny in its own way too.

4. hometown comforts by nyoomerr

this is another bingqiu one, post-canon, and it’s an identity reveal. it’s my ideal identity reveal fic because it’s incredibly low stakes and binghe is just curious about shen yuan’s world. no system warnings and stuff. just bonding. im a simple gal.

5. still waters by marichen

went through a beefleaf phase where i read a bunch of fics. this was the best one by far. unmatched. beefleaf, imo, is a very difficult couple to write for. there’s so much to unpack. it’s hard to make their relationship feel genuine because so much care needs to go into shi qingxuan trusting he xuan again. in this fic, it is the classic he xuan lingering around, but also we see sqx building his own life back up on his own, as well. it’s he xuan pov. so good so good.

6. Bring it back, bring it back [don’t take it away from me] by wednesdaisy

another good omens fic, also post-season 1, aziraphale pov. in this one, crowley fucks off to new zealand because he thinks his relationship with aziraphale is fantasy and it’s too painful to keep seeing him after everything they’ve been through. and aziraphale tracks him down and has to convince crowley that he does indeed want him in his life and loves him and ah, it’s really sweet.

7. the round moon by orphan_account and the hazy sun by orphan_account

this is a 2 part quanyin fic (pre-canon qyz for part 1, post-canon yin yu pov for part 2). i’m also incredibly picky about quanyin fics. this one was so beautifully done. it didn’t make quan yizhen feel overly-childish as an adult like many others do, and it made yin yu’s conflicting feelings about him so vivid and believable. highly recommend for quanyin nation out there.

8. This Is Me Trying by Piper_Emerald

another post-canon identity reveal. this one is a little more angsty than the one above but also so well done! a deep part of me needs an identity reveal to happen for them at some point hahaha…like binghe is smart ok…he suspects already.

9. some good mistakes by Lise

everyone forgive me for not really having any wangxian recs. my post-untamed fic phase was on my old ao3 account i can’t find. anyway, i remember this one being really good. wei wuxian goes missing. jiang cheng pov, teaming up with lan zhan to find wwx. post-canon untamed. personal preference but i love post-canon untamed wangxian fics the most because i just reading about all the ways they might get together.

10. Not Easily Conquered by dropdeaddream, WhatAreFears

i’m including this one because i’d be lying if it wasn’t always in my top 10. i never think about stevebucky these days and cannot stand marvel, but damn this fic holds up like 8 years later!! 3-parter, AU where steve never gets frozen but bucky is still the winter soldier. told over decades. some cringe US cold war propaganda but ignoring that…a beautiful story. if you ever carried any attachment for these two, worth the read.

This wonderful mdzs fic that actually really ISN'T super light fluffy or heartwarming in certain parts 😅 but it hits right in that sweet spot of having serious dark stuff you can relate to but also being romantic and funny and Really clever writing, I read this fic during a Rough Period™ and it was definitely just what I needed, made me smile then and I Still smile whenever I think about it now (and it's also the reason I started saying Rat Pride constantly 😂)

🔁 A fic you've reread several times-

Probably my favourite Cherry Magic fic (including mine 😂) I reread it as a good comfort fic fairly often. It does a PERFECT job of putting an au twist on the canon plot but still PERFECTLY understanding the message of canon and the characters, absolute gem of a quick sweet fluffy ride to go on even if you haven’t actually watched the show.

And let me tell you, my brain does NOT recall info like this so I went and dug thru the crypt of cringe and dead fandoms that is my decade long ao3 history looking through fics that said I'd viewed them more than a dozen times for something I actually wanted to recommend and LORD yall better appreciate the effort 💀

I'm pretty sure you're asking about this post that I reblogged from @winepresswrath and it's from flight of a one-winged dove 🔒 by @mengyao! It's primarily based on The Untamed, so you know—that explains it. It is an incredible rom-com sangcheng fic where Jiang Cheng behaves like a lunatic after a hook up (so, in character) and writes Nie Huaisang an incredibly bitchy letter demanding back taxes. Nie Huaisang is trans and having a complicated time (about that and, like, everything else). It is a DELIGHT. I haven't revisited it in a minute, since I've been on the zhanchengxian/ningcheng train, but honestly, I should, because it fucking slaps. Also, I have since left lurkerdom, so I should really leave a comment!

I do think novel canon Wei Wuxian has ongoing intense and complicated feelings about Jiang Cheng that he's basically just too burned out to deal with by the end of MDZS. I think he's also profoundly avoidant and doesn't want to think about any of them. (Especially his resentment around the core transfer—he was awake for that! He consented but it was painful and traumatizing and he coped badly in the aftermath and he associates that with Jiang Cheng!) But, to be fair, given where we leave them, it's possible that those two are just done with each other by the end of the novel. I like to think they work it out, but there's a perfectly justifiable reading where they don't.

i do indeed! i've probably rec'd a few of these before in the past, but i am always glad to rope more people into reading my faves. (i'll also try to rec some other stuff so i'm not just parroting the same recs over and over again lol)

also the vast majority of this is going to be xiyao-flavoured, but there's a peppering of suyao in here, too.

the it's worth it every time series by roquen (aka @fincalinde here on tumblr), which includes my favourite xiyao fix-it fic, the weakness of falling in love. the series revolves around the premise of what would happen if jin guangshan denied jin guangyao permission to marry qin su, meaning that jgy and lxc can now fuck without guilt--and, probably more importantly, what that added emotional intimacy and access to jgy's circumstances reveals to lxc. i love this series because it hews extremely close to canon, which is just the type of fic i personally prefer reading.

abstinence, denial by @ilgaksu, a xiyao vestal virgins AU with a predictably sad ending. still very crunchy.

a painting missing strokes, a song missing notes by occasional_boy_reporter, a post-canon xiyao fix-it following the cql canon. it's unfinished 🥲 but the cliffhanger of the last chapter is still emotionally satisfying imo, and there is SO much good and crunchy su minshan (and decidedly one-sided suyao) content. good good food.

the after series by welcome_equivocator, including the fic remains, a cql-canon xiyao AU in which lan xichen runs back into the guanyin temple as it is collapsing to die with jin guangyao.

imago also by welcome_equivocator, a VERY unsettling xiyao body horror fic that will make your skin crawl, but hopefully in a fun way.

sainted, untainted by @gloriousmonsters, a suyao-flavoured exploration of trust through badly negotiated kink, but everyone is fully consenting to what is going on ftr.

The Untamed modern au, wangxian, gender changes, wlw, identity shenanigans, texting, food as a gateway for love, university, light angst, misunderstandings, G. wei ying flirts with the driver who delivers her food orders via text, not knowing who they are, and it has no connection at all to lan zhan, her classmate! i love this little fic. its fun and silly and sweet and makes me go all warm inside, its exactly what i need when im down. i remember that u dont prefer school fics but maybe u like this??? there is not much serious school stuff happening there aside from the opportunity for wei ying to flirt with lan zhan since theyre classmates

no one understands the chemistry we have by livinginaworldofnoise. WOH, wenzhou, modern au, story told in posts, G. wen kexing tries to woe the most handsome man in the world. zhou zishu needs advice to get rid of a weird creep. these things are not at all related, why would u think that! its been a few weeks but i read this when i was having an extremely bad night and it lifted my spirits!!!!!! livinginaworldofnoise is one of my fav fandom authors, theyre so good at balancing rawness with humour. and i like how this fic transplants wkx from canon to a modern setting and shifts into an outsider‘s pov (the reddit community, this is told in posts), which automatically removes any context that would explain his Behaviour and Attitudes. i mean, wkx is actually disturbing! if u dont know why he is the way he is agdgdgdg

The Untamed, MDZS, modern au, wangxian, background niehuan. gender changes (EVERYONE is a lesbian except for jiang cheng, who is the token gay man), wlw, house parties, drunk kissing, chaotic friend groups, casual queerness, T. wei ying and lan zhan meet on a house party the jins are hosting. sparks fly. highly recommend to read this together with its sequel!

the only place you wanna be by aiyexayen. WOH canon divergence/fix-it, gu xiang/wen kexing/zhou zishu, background wenzhou, four seasons manor arc, multiple pov, gu xiang-centric, introspection, non-sexual intimacy, hurt/comfort, angst, found family, rarepairings, polyships, M. zhou zishu has a problem, and its just as annoying and confusing as wen kexing. gu xiang realizes that the lao bing gui her zhuren keeps following around might be a little bit good-looking. wen kexing rearranges his perspective of what it means to him to care for his silly little girl. while they all live at four seasons manor, things develop. this fic single-handledly changed my brain chemistry! and the dynamics are so warm and so gah!!!! also aiyex shared a little of the bts process of working on it here!!!!!

The first time Jiang-shushu had introduced him as the son of Wei Changze and Cangse Sanren, he had thought his face would split from the force of his smile. No one had argued with the sect leader, but Wei Wuxian is not a sect leader, and those of Gusu Lan do not seem to take kindly to any sort of correction. At least, if their esteemed teacher and acting sect leader is anything to go by.
