Random Details in the Jacobs' Apartment

One day I will overanalyze the entire apartment, but for now:

David and his family live in flat number 51. (According to the scripts, they also live on the fifth floor.) In the above screenshot, you can also spot a blue shirt hanging above the bed presumably shared by David and Les.

The Jacobs have quite a lot of books in their apartment. In the images above I counted five books on various surfaces plus what seems to be a bookshelf next to Sarah in the second image. All those books shouldn't be a surprise considering how highly Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs value education.

In the last screenshot above, you can also spot what appears to be either a pair of candlesticks or a two candle candelabra on top of the cabinet in the left corner. I'm going to say that this was an intentional detail and that they are the Jacobs's Shabbat candles.

I'm pretty sure this has been pointed out before, but Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs's pillows are embroidered with 'Good Morning' in red thread.

In the Jacobs sibling's bedroom, there are even more books to be found. The only thing more numerous than the books are the pictures and artwork that decorate the walls, mantel, and various other surfaces throughout the apartment.

You'll also notice that the blue shirt from before has disappeared, or that David is now wearing it.

i have such a vivid thought in my mind of canon era davey being queer but obviously his family doesn’t know, or at least he thinks they don’t know. but he’s an odd boy, and they know that there’s something… different about him, whatever that may be, and i think that they love him despite it.

i keep thinking about mayer suspecting but never pressing it further, because that’s his son, and he loves him, but being a queer in a time like this is a death sentence- it’s something mayer can’t wrap his head around. i keep thinking about les, already dreaming of finding a wife and settling down one day, asking david about it and being confused that his older brother doesn’t really want a wife— right now, at least. not right now. maybe someday, david says, always tacking on hope, but les has his doubts. and i keep thinking about sarah seeing her brother’s longing, seeing how his smile falters when he stares at couples on the street and how he never seems to be happier when he’s shoulder to shoulder with a certain newsboy. sarah sees it, and knows it, and she wishes he would talk to her about it. she doesn understand it, but she wants to. and i keep thinking of esther knowing. knowing in her heart that her baby, her loving boy, hopes and dreams of a life he can’t live, not now, maybe not ever. esther seeing the way his shoulders tense when family friends ask if he’s found any girls to woo yet, seeing that singe of pain on his face when an older woman at their synagogue says she has a darling granddaughter she would love for david to meet, seeing the way he resigns himself, putting up a wall between himself and his family, singling himself out and shutting himself off without anyone else pushing him to. maybe, just maybe, noticing that the way he looks at a certain newsboy is the same way her brother used to look at his best friend- a brother she has no contact with, a brother she hopes is happy and safe and loved. a brother she will never understand, a brother whose life is something she was taught to condemn, but she would rather have a queer brother than a lost one, and the same applies for her son.

and i keep thinking about david jacobs having very big feelings inside. feelings of hope, that maybe he can one day share this with someone he cares about, not just someone like him. feelings of despair, like he will never be happy, or safe, or loved. feelings of fear, fear for being suspected on the street, fear of fists and police and a jail cell to rot in. feelings of defiance, because he’s a person too, and he deserves happiness too, and if he has to find that happiness away from the public eye, if he has to find it in alleys and molly houses and behind closed doors, then so be it.

feelings of guilt, for not being the son he should have been. but feelings of acceptance, too, because his family recognizes that something about him is different- whatever that may be- and loves him anyway.

FFXIV Write Day 1: Steer

It's that time of year again! :D Estinien watches Agi steer the ship that is taking them to Tural. SFW.

“You sure you can steer this thing?” Estinien whispered into Agnes’s ear. Esme was chasing the twins on deck, while Krile, Erenville, and Wuk Lamat were fawning over Hamignant.

Lad loves the attention.

His wife snorted. “Estinien, really! I grew up by the sea---of course I know how to steer!” She turned her head to place a gentle kiss on Marcelin’s head (this one’s napping and wrapped against me) and then focused ahead. “Docking is another story though.”

The captain of the ship shook his head and groaned. “Alright, Mistress Varlineau. You’ve had your fun.”

Estinien watched his wife giggle adorably as she relinquished control of the ship and thanked him profusely for indulging her.

Agi, you charm everyone you meet. Thought you knew that by now.

Then again…

“Oh, that was amazing!” She grinned, kissing first the sleeping infant’s head again and then ME!!! “Did I do a good job, love?”

Should I tease or—

Definitely tease.

As he gently rocked Marcelin, he answered with a wink. “We’ve not crashed upon the rocks, so aye, you did.”

There she is pretending to be mad, but I see that blush madam.

They were interrupted by a squealing Esme running into her mother’s leg, Alisaie and Alphinaud close behind.

Alisaie rolled her eyes. “Estinien, Agi would never lead us astray in any capacity!”

“Quite right!” Agnes laughed, lifting Esme and peppering her cute little face with kisses. “Mummy’s good enough to not sink the boat. Isn’t that wonderful, my little love?”

If only you weren’t dead to the world, Marc.

Definitely going to be talking more about them because I've turned them into actual OCS, so lets talk about the Mayer family!

Dan Mayer: From a small town, his father was on the police force and Dan always wanted to join him one day. He grew up with strict rules and firm beliefs, but it was in no way cold. It just wasn't the normal 'loving family' dynamic people would expect. He carries that with him and he really does try to connect with his kids, but it's hard. He dated a girl on and off through high school, but they broke up for good the summer before senior year. Dan thought she was too good for him. The two met again at a school reunion sophomore year of college and they connected instantly, ended up getting married. - 6'3, dark brown hair, brown eyes, 45-y-o Dan's birthday: June 2nd, 1946

Olivia Mayer: From a small town, lived on the outskirts of town closer to the woods where the population was even thinner. Has always been sweet and got along with everybody, though her family wasn't close at all. It's easy to see that she makes up for what she lacked through her early life. Cares for everyone and will always greet you with open arms. (Insert story of dating Dan, reunion, marriage) - 5'4, light brown hair, hazel eyes, 44-y-o Olivia's birthday: April 15th, 1947

Jonathan Charles Mayer: Son of Dan and Olivia Mayer. Grew up in the same small town as his parents, they only moved to Willow Creek when he was 14. Spends nearly all his hours listening to music, playing guitar, singing, playing violin, taking pictures, or talking with his sister. Every day, after school, the two sit in Jonathan's music room and do their homework together. He enjoys taking care of plants. Despite being a bit of an obvious hopeless romantic, he's never once spoken of a crush and audibly gags whenever his mom makes a joke about him getting into a relationship. He tends to keep to himself, having Katherine as his best friend (up until recently). - 5'8, light brown hair, green eyes, 16-y-o Jonathan's birthday: August 14th, 1975

Katherine Mayer: Daughter of Dan and Olivia Mayer. Quite outgoing and funny, she enjoys making people smile. She's a natural genius, chess being her favorite game for as long as anyone cam remember. Though Katherine has many friends, no one is as close to her as Jonathan. The Jacobs Family is Jewish full stop.

This is not a headcanon.

Bob Tzudiker and Noni White, the authors of the original newsies script Hard Promises, were very intentional in the naming of their characters. Many, if not all, of the newsie characters they created were named after or inspired by real newsboys from the 1899 strike. The entire project was heavily researched.

"I am a history buff and I also don’t trust secondary sources. After we decided to work on it (Newsies); it came from a single small paragraph in the New York Times we then started checking primary sources." -Noni White [source]

So when the Jacobs family was created, you better believe that their names were meant to be read as Jewish.

The Jacobs surname is Jewish.

"The Hebrew Yaakov and the Biblical Jacob are the sources for the surname Jacobs and its variants.  The Jewish surnames from Yaakov include Yakov, Jacob, Jacoby and Jacobowitz, as well as Jacobs."[source]

David, Sarah, and Esther are likewise all names that are Hebrew in origin. They are also the names of important figures in the Bible or Tanakh.

"The name Mayer is a Jewish Ashkenazic name that was originally derived from the Yiddish male given name Meyer. This personal name was in turn derived from the Hebrew name Meir, which means enlightener." [source]

I could not find anything for Les, likely because 'Les' is a shorted version of his real name.

The Jacobs family is further confirmed to be Jewish in the Newsies novelization:

page 11 of the Newsies novel by Jonathan Fast

The original Hard Promises script adds further confirmation. In the original scene where David buys his papers, Weasel calls David a Jewish racial slur. Later on, as David, Jack, and Les go back to the Jacobses, the script indicates that the Jacobs family lives off of Baker Street (possibly misspelt Baxter Street) in "Jewtown":

Additionally, David Moscow (1992 David Jacobs) has a Jewish father [source] and both of Ben Fankhauser's (OBC Davey) parents are Jewish. [source]

The Jacobs family is and always has been Jewish.

On a related note, Esther Jacobs is confirmed to be Polish. This makes the Jacobs children canonically at least half-polish.

Hard Promises (Original Newsies Story)

In researching this, I also found that, In addition to the name Mayer being an Ashkenazic Jewish name, the surname Jacobs "was often given to Jewish people as a surname in Ashkenazi Jewish communities." [source]

Therefore, I think it's safe to say that Mayer Jacobs (and the Jacobs family by extension) is Ashkenazi Jewish in heritage.

Mayer being Ashkenazi Jewish also makes it likely that he too is Polish, as a vast majority of Ashkenazi Jews immigrated to Poland from Germany in the Medieval period. [source]

This would then make the Jacobs some of 2.5 million Ashkenazi Jews who came to the United States from from the Russian Empire (which at the time included Poland), the Kingdom of Romania, and Austria-Hungary between 1880 and 1924 and took up residence on the Lower East Side in Manhattan. [source]

The Jacobs are Jewish.
