I feel like we don't talk enough about Xion and Axels dynamic in Days.

Cuz like. Axel is the only adult person - and, perhaps more importantly, person with at least some degree of influence within the organization - that actually cares about Xion as a person. The only other person she has is Roxas, who is deliberately kept in the dark about pretty much everything and has no say in anything that goes on with the organization. If Xion had anyone to actually confide in regarding her... everything, it would be Axel.

Except Axel doesn't do much to actually help her. See, the thing about Axel in Days is that he is very much trying to uphold the status quo, even when he knows it is actively hurting Xion. Because if he can at least keep it stable, they can endure anything, right? (Which, as a side note, does put into perspective how his relationship with Saix is during the game too.)

I think about these two scenes with them a lot.

One thing that's notable to me is how flat Axels voice is in these scenes. I've noticed he tends to get like that when he's either uncomfortable, lying, or being dismissive.

With the one in Castle Oblivion, Axel is very obviously trying to convince Xion to ignore CO and the truth he knows is inside, because that truth would destroy any sense of normalcy Xion could've ever gotten form the organization. It's a threat to the status quo he so dearly wants to keep the illusion of.

This scene is a big betrayal of Xions trust in Axel. Because he is doing the exact same thing all the other adults around her are. Trying to keep her ignorant, obedient, and controllable. Even if Axel doesn't really do much to stop her, he is also very much ignoring her wants and needs for something they both know will only continue to hurt her and Roxas. He's dismissing her doubts as nonsense and trying to distract her by bringing up her mission, and when that doesn't work, use the threat of execution to try to scare her away. Can't really blame her for pushing him away the way she does.

And the second one... well. First of, bluntly saying to her face that she is a puppet when he KNOWS that is the source of most of her problems is just cruel. How much must've that hurt for Xion to hear? Yes, he does later say he doesn't think of her as just a puppet, but still... not like he denies she is one at all.

But also, for once he's actually forthcoming with information with her. He doesn't try to dismiss her worries over Roxas as something else or try to discourage her from asking, he actually tells her what's going on. (Not in a particularly good way, but still!) At this point, Axel knows there's no point in hiding anything. He knows that the stability he wanted is dead and buried. (And was maybe never really alive to begin with, as much as he tried to tell himself it was.) He's very... resigned. He knows this will end badly. He tries to keep everything from falling apart anyway.

Axel and Xions dynamic is build on a foundation that is rocky to begin with, and that only continues to get more rough as time goes on. The fact they manage to still stay as friends is a testament to just how much they both care about each other despite it all! Axel is by all accounts an absolute god awful friend to Xion but it's not because he doesn't care! And she knows that! She knows that everything he does, he does for a reason. Even if she might not realize the full extent of what those reasons are, she does know he has them.

Just... waaaaah they make me feel things. Chewing them like a dog I love complicated messy relationships.
