year: 1991 When the Mayer family moved to Willow Creek: July 1988 When Cecilia moved to Willow Creek: September 1990 When Mason moved to Willow Creek: August 1991 ----- When Cecilia moved in, the Mayers went over to give her some cookies and feel welcome. There wasn't any more talk after that, aside from the occasional wave hello and small talk when mail was accidentally delivered to the wrong address. Jonathan has always enjoyed seeing one of her columns being featured in the newspaper. When Mason moved in, Jonathan got very excited to see another kid his age in the neighborhood- albeit, there are others, but they're all pretentious. He went over and offered to help Mason move his things in, and the two clicked immediately. ----- Jonson (jonathanxmason) playlist here ----- Jonson pinterest board here -----
Jonathan's favorite movies: Back to the Future, The Shining, Stand By Me, Dead Poets Society, The Thing, The Princess Bride, Grease, It, The Silence of the Lambs, The Outsiders
Mason's favorite movies: E.T., Raiders of the Lost Arc, The Thing, The Princess Bride, Grease, Romancing the Stone, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, The Breakfast Club -----
Jonathan's hobbies: Listening to music, playing guitar (has been playing since he was 8), playing violin (has been playing since he was 5), piano (has been playing since he was 11), writing (just started recently), photography (less of a hobby, more of a sentimental act), skating/skateboarding (has been doing it since he was 11) playing video games (less important to him, but he enjoys it nonetheless)
Mason's hobbies: Art (has been doing it for as long as he can remember), listening to music, reviewing his sister's articles (not that he's any help with editing), rollerblading/skating (just picked it up recently, but he isn't too bad), playing video games (often what he's doing when he's not drawing), going on walks (for inspiration for paintings) -----
Jonathan's favorite bands: The Smiths, Tears for Fears, Chet Baker, Etta James
Mason's favorite bands: ABBA, Queen, David Bowie -----
Voices for all these guys in the tags of this post
Will be added to! Will be creating mood boards for every character! Story will be deepened!

Democracy Under Threat
Despite what cable news may have you believe, Fuckface von Clownstick is not the sole threat to our democracy. This week, we’re peeling back the rhetoric and taking a look at where the vulnerabilities in our institutions lie. In conversation with Jane Mayer, chief Washington correspondent for The New Yorker magazine and Noah Bookbinder, President of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, Jon explores the roots of our democratic dysfunction. From ever-multiplying dark money to shark tanking ideas for tax transparency, this episode has it all. Plus, hear from producers of the pod and get a taste for what you can expect in episodes to come! Fact Check: Jane Mayer mentions that Jon said the FEC is about as useless as male nipples. It was, in fact, Jordan Klepper who said this.

Jon Stewart on Who Writes Legislation and Passing the PACT Act
Jon Stewart recalls an experience where a bipartisan group of congresspeople agreed on his proposal to support veterans suffering from toxic exposures but asked him to write the legislation! This leads Jon, Jane Mayer, and Noah Bookbinder to dive into the vulnerabilities in our democracy.

Album Review: Bettye LaVette - LaVette!
With 11 original songs by Randall Bramblett and musical cameos from a host of big-time players, it’s still the voice that puts the exclamation in Betty LaVette’s LaVette! LP.
At 77 and with a long history of almost making it before attaining star status in the 21st century, LaVette’s craggy instrument carries every one of those hardships with it. And Blamblett composed a batch of songs that tell her story in such a way that LaVette! doubles as a sonic biography of sorts.
Organist Steve Winwood, guitarist John Mayer, keyboardists Jon Batiste and Ray Parker Jr., pedal-steeler Larry Campbell and bassist Pino Palladino (the Who) and drummer Steve Jordan (the Rolling Stones) supply the canvas for LaVette’s strained paintings of a long life as a struggling musician (“See through Me,” “Plan B”), teenage fame (“Lazy [And I Know It]”) and loving and losing on “I’m Not Gonna Waste My Love.”
What LaVette! has in singing; however, it lacks in material. As a lyricist, Bramblett leans on tired phrases and simplistic rhyme schemes. Meanwhile, tracks such as “Mess about It” are little more than lengthy vamps nestled alongside unimaginative soul and blues melodies.
This may explain why LaVette has so many covers albums in her discography. For the original songs alone, LaVette! is a welcome, albeit flawed, departure.
Grade card: Bettye LaVette - LaVette! - C+

You must face the age of not believing Doubting everything you ever knew Until at last you start believing There's something wonderful in you
Dame Angela Lansbury, who died at her home today in Los Angeles at the age of 96, is perhaps best known today as Jessica Fletcher in the acclaimed TV series Murder, She Wrote and in the Broadway stage plays and musicals in significant parts that Hollywood never gave her. But well before that, the Irish-British transplant to America (she and her family left Britain at the height of Nazi Germany’s bombing campaign of her home nation) made her career as mostly a character actress during the Golden Age of Hollywood. She may not have been a major star billed at the top of marquees and movie posters during her time while contracted to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), but she would come to be a recognizable figure to audiences of multiple generations – whether she might be playing a tough saloon owner with a belter of a singing voice, a schoolteacher just making ends meet, Elvis’ mother (despite a nine-year age difference), princesses and queens, the amoral and scheming wife of a political candidate, an emotionally manipulative mother, or a teapot matriarch.
She stepped onto a movie soundstage for the first time at seventeen years of age, while making Gaslight (1944) for MGM. Because she was still technically a minor, she had to be accompanied by a social worker while working on set. Despite this, director George Cukor and her co-stars (including Ingrid Bergman) treated her as equals, all of them recognizing right away her professionality and acting ability. Perhaps producers and studio executives might not have done the same, saddling her so often with character roles, but Lansbury – by all accounts – extended that same kindness Cukor and Bergman afforded to her to so many others over the decades, leaving a legacy that goes beyond whatever personal disappointments she may have had over the more considerable roles she never got to play.
Her distinction as Hollywood royalty came later in life, as our connections of Hollywood’s Golden Age are almost all gone.
Nine of the films Angela Lansbury appeared in follow (left-right, descending):
Gaslight (1944) – directed by George Cukor; also starring Charles Boyer, Ingrid Bergman, Joseph Cotten, and Dame May Whitty
The Harvey Girls (1946) – directed by George Sidney; also starring Judy Garland, John Hodiak, Ray Bolger, Preston Foster, Virginia O’Brien, Kenny Baker, Marjorie Main, Chill Wills, Selena Royle, and Cyd Charisse
The Three Musketeers (1949) – directed by George Sidney; also starring Lana Turner, Gene Kelly, June Allyson, Van Heflin, Frank Morgan, and Vincent Price
The Court Jester (1955) – directed by Melvin Frank and Norman Panama; also starring Danny Kaye, Glynis Johns, Basil Rathbone, and Cecil Parker
The Manchurian Candidate (1962) – directed by John Frankenheimer; also starring Frank Sinatra, Laurence Harvey, and Janet Leigh
Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971) – directed by Robert Stevenson and Ward Kimball; also starring David Tomlinson, Roddy McDowall, Sam Jaffe, John Ericson, Cindy O’Callaghan, Ian Weighill, and Roy Snart
Death on the Nile (1978) – directed by John Guillermin; also starring Peter Ustinov, Jane Birkin, Lois Chiles, Bette Davis, Mia Farrow, Jon Finch, Olivia Hussey, I.S. Johar, George Kennedy, Simon MacCorkindale, David Niven, Maggie Smith, and Jack Warden
Beauty and the Beast (1991) – directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise; also starring Paige O’Hara, Robby Benson, Richard White, Jerry Orbach, David Ogden Stiers, Rex Everhart, Jesse Corti, and Bradley Pierce
Mary Poppins Returns (2018) – directed by Rob Marshall; also starring Emily Blunt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh, Joel Dawson, Julie Walters, Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, David Warner, and Dick Van Dyke

Definitely going to be talking more about them because I've turned them into actual OCS, so lets talk about the Mayer family!
Dan Mayer: From a small town, his father was on the police force and Dan always wanted to join him one day. He grew up with strict rules and firm beliefs, but it was in no way cold. It just wasn't the normal 'loving family' dynamic people would expect. He carries that with him and he really does try to connect with his kids, but it's hard. He dated a girl on and off through high school, but they broke up for good the summer before senior year. Dan thought she was too good for him. The two met again at a school reunion sophomore year of college and they connected instantly, ended up getting married. - 6'3, dark brown hair, brown eyes, 45-y-o Dan's birthday: June 2nd, 1946
Olivia Mayer: From a small town, lived on the outskirts of town closer to the woods where the population was even thinner. Has always been sweet and got along with everybody, though her family wasn't close at all. It's easy to see that she makes up for what she lacked through her early life. Cares for everyone and will always greet you with open arms. (Insert story of dating Dan, reunion, marriage) - 5'4, light brown hair, hazel eyes, 44-y-o Olivia's birthday: April 15th, 1947
Jonathan Charles Mayer: Son of Dan and Olivia Mayer. Grew up in the same small town as his parents, they only moved to Willow Creek when he was 14. Spends nearly all his hours listening to music, playing guitar, singing, playing violin, taking pictures, or talking with his sister. Every day, after school, the two sit in Jonathan's music room and do their homework together. He enjoys taking care of plants. Despite being a bit of an obvious hopeless romantic, he's never once spoken of a crush and audibly gags whenever his mom makes a joke about him getting into a relationship. He tends to keep to himself, having Katherine as his best friend (up until recently). - 5'8, light brown hair, green eyes, 16-y-o Jonathan's birthday: August 14th, 1975
Katherine Mayer: Daughter of Dan and Olivia Mayer. Quite outgoing and funny, she enjoys making people smile. She's a natural genius, chess being her favorite game for as long as anyone cam remember. Though Katherine has many friends, no one is as close to her as Jonathan. She's never understood music the way he does, but those afternoons in the basement with him mean everything to her. - 4'4, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, 9-y-o Katherine's birthday: September 5th, 1982

the good news is seeing Taylor play Ours recently has made it okay for me to listen to that song again after my little hicup when I was told it was about Jon Mayer
My hot take is that I think sometimes people let the original songs’ intended subject eclipse the song and prevent it from becoming something personal and meaningful to them beyond that source information.

Song Review: Bettye LaVette - “Plan B”
Randall Bramblett wrote the songs. And if “Plan B” is any indication, Bettye LaVette sang the shit out of them.
The lead single from LaVette! is a sauntering blues-rocker - one that would be called self-referential and autobiographical if not for the authorship.
Might be crazy but at at least I’m free/that’s why they love me, I got no plan B/rhythm and blues in the back of my mind/champagne and a joint would do me just fine, LaVette rasps over the relentless melody.
Out June 16, LaVette! features Steve Jordan, John Mayer, Jon Batiste, Steve Winwood and others.
But LaVette, who’s sounding as good as ever on “Plan B,” does all the singing on LaVette!
Good plan.
