The crows love Wylan's mother.

She's smart and kind, just like her son, or it's more like he takes after her.

She knows everyone's respective favourite sweets and kinds of tea. She loves to listen Jesper read for Wylan out loud in the evening. Kaz regularly brings new paintings for her collection, sometimes really fancy ones (he never tells where he took them from, claiming that "a good magician wouldn't give away his secrets"). There are lines adressed specifically to mrs. Marya in the letters Inej sends to the Van Eck estate. She always asks the servants to get Nina's favourite food cooked whenever the latter visits Ketterdam. And she didn't have a chance to see Matthias in person, but she uses every chance to know something about him, and they all feel how sorry she is for everything that happened.

But the main thing is - Marya Van Eck never judges people for the way they manage to live.

She actually knows that every friend Wylan has made for the last five months has probably killed more than one person. But she sees them for who they are - teenagers who have been through too much. And the people who helped her son. Who gave him a chance to survive. Who taught him to appreciate his talents. Who showed him love, after all. Unfamiliarly fair and strong love, not chained by conveniance or reputation. And if people of the Barrel are capable of it more than any merch is, their lawlessness doesn't mean that much.

Finally what was written on the page made sense and he could read it! See hes not ‘defective’ or ‘stupid’ after all! The music teacher said he got every single note right and his mother was smiling ear to ear when he played twinkle twinkle little star perfectly

After the lesson he ran straight to his fathers office beyond excited to tell him and Jan not only doesn’t give a shit he actually seems angry at the news ‘if only you put as much effort into reading something useful’. His father only berates him for interrupting his work with ‘nonsense’. Sternly reminding Wylan not to bother him unless he can actually read something

I mentioned this vaguely a bit ago but I think each of Inej's six knives can be argued to all match up to one of the crows. You can probably swap a few of them and some are stronger than others, but:

Petyr: archers, reknowned for his bravery = Inej; 'the heart is an arrow', 'lovely and brave and better...', and it was her first knife, a gift from Kaz

Lizabeta: flowers and gardens = Matthias; the yellow tulips, laid out in the Van Eck garden

Alina: orphans and undiscovered gifts = Nina, who was raised in an orphanage and fought in the Second Army like Alina, and has a very new and undiscovered gift after parem alters her power

Marya: those far from home = Wylan, the runaway; plus his mother's name is Marya!

Anastasia: the sick = Jesper; there are many kinds of sickness, and both were grisha in hiding with their father after their mother's death

Vladimir: the drowned, unlikely achievement = Kaz, birthed (...) in the harbour, emerged to repeatedly achieve the impossible

Wylan's best revenge in CK is the fact that the gene for balding in men comes from the MOTHER'S side, so if it doesn't run in Marya's family then WYLAN CAN LAUGH AWAY WITH A HEAD FULL OF HAIR WHILE JAN VAN ECK GOES BALD IN PRISON

i love that one of the main messages in six of crows is just that some people don’t deserve forgiveness. kaz dedicates his whole life to destroying pekka rollins, and people may not understand it, but no one tries to change his mind. when he finally tells inej that pekka killed his brother, she responds by telling him that they’ll destroy him for it. inej, the kindest and most mature character, doesn’t believe that powerful men who prey on children deserve mercy. and she has her own demons, too. she handles them a bit better than kaz, but at the end of the day, she dedicates her life to hunting down people like the ones who hurt her. nina and matthias never stop haunting jarl brum. matthias is a country traitor dating the most “unnatural” grisha the world has ever seen. and nina… of course it’s nina who destroys him in the end, tearing him down and then dating his child. because that’s the story that jarl laid out for her. one of his soldiers killed matthias so she uses her second chance at love as her vengeance. even wylan, who believed that he deserved what happened to him, learns to hate his father. if not for himself, than for his mother. “i’m here for her” repeats in his head like a battle cry. he was content on disappearing until he finds marya and decides, “no, jan van eck isn’t going to get his wish. i’m not going anywhere.” and he tears down his father’s reputation and takes his place in the merchant counsel and becomes his father’s greatest nightmare. all this, i guess, to say that there is no perfect victim. and if the only reason you’re still living is out of spite, it’s okay. because at least you’re living

I think this is a pretty popular one but that Baghra survived the Grisha trilogy and was the blind Grisha amplifier being held captive at the Ice Court

Kaz is everything that Van Eck wanted in his child and that’s why he and Wylan bother him so much more than the other Crows (I have a whole essay on Kaz & Wylan parallels if anyone wants to read it)

Matthias’ mother and/or baby sister were Grisha and he didn’t know, and that they were actually killed by Drüskelle during the skirmish and Brum told him it was Infernis as part of his manipulation (this is not mine originally but I’ve seen it a lot so I don’t know who first said it, sorry)

Cornellus Smeet’s wife is brunette

I don’t necessarily think that Alys’ child is Bajan’s, though I have wondered this in the past and wondered what Wylan’s reaction might be if the kid weren’t actually his sibling, but I do think they were in or prepared for a secret relationship and that he would happily help her raise the baby as though it were his own

Mentioned this is a post recently but I think it’s possible that the reason Wylan has so few memories of his mother but such clear memories of being 8, and even younger, and going on all of the trips abroad with his father (Ice Court, Elling, Novyi Zem, Shu oil fields, etc) is because whenever Marya stood up to Van Eck, either in defense of her herself or Wylan, Van Eck would punish her by separating her from Wylan and Wylan was too young to know that was happening

I think that if Van Eck won and Kuwei went back to the Ice Court after Crooked Kingdom that the Kerch would have formed an alliance with the Fjerdans. I think they would have been able to successfully move through Ravka and I think that the Shu Han would have then declared war against them both. I also think that it’s possible Novyi Zem would ally themselves with the Shu and it would lead to a WW1 scale event. I have my reasons for this and I have a fic on ao3 exploring the idea and following the Crows in the potential aftermath (Our Gods Have Abandoned Us), but I also think it would be a really interesting discussion to get going I would love to hear other thoughts on it as well
