*Seen playing on a television screen in this episode is the BBC's production of A Christmas Carol (1977), featuring Sir Michael Hordern as Scrooge and John Le Mesurier as Marley's Ghost. Shot in color, on videotape, the footage appears to be 'broadcast' in black and white. Even more bizarrely, the voices of Hordern and le Mesurier (both English actors, speaking English) have been overdubbed in English by other actors.

[1/2] History anon here. Following a skirmish with the Nunkasa au, Mai asked if I had an input and here it is. I kept thinking with myself “what could possibly make Eren be considered KIA, but he was actually alive and came back?”. The only thing I could think of was something akin to the Fall of Singapore in 1942, during the Second World War. To begin this, I’ll say I took a lot of inspiration from this ask, and Mai’s answer that she preferred the version where Eren’s unit lost contact of with the rest of the army.

I know everything relating to WWII brings in a lot of emotion but bear with me here. Let’s concentrate on the geographical-military aspects of the battles. Otherwise we’d get lost in many variables that aren’t useful to the au. Again, I’ll use real place names so that you can locate yourself, and I’ll not take the liberty of naming places in someone else’s au.

Seven years is a lot. It was very difficult to think of a narrative in which Eren could be missing for so long. If this au happened earlier in History, until mid-Eighteenth Century, for example, it would be a lot easier. With the development of communications, the best alternative for such a long period is to have a mix-up along with a colossal military disaster that justified it.

So let’s go. Since the Sixteenth Century it became pretty common for colonial empires to fight entire wars very far away from homeland, and this became more and more commonplace as this empires grew bigger and started to control places further away. Eldia, much like the British Empire, was depicted as a brutal expansionist nation that stretched far and wide. And had as its persistent enemy the nation of Marley.

During WWII, as you might know, the British fought to maintain control of their colonies in Southeast Asia against the advances of Japan, who inflicted severe losses upon the British. Singapore had been, for a century and a half at that point, the largest British stronghold in the region, their largest commercial port. I cannot stress enough how shocking their defeat and withdrawal in Singapore was a shock and huge military setback. They had a hundred thousand man and fought a much smaller Japanese force. More than 80 thousand ended up captured, and British control in the region was shattered forever after. This was the largest surrender in British history.

It was preceded, however, from a larger war context in Southeast Asia. In 1941, the Japanese invaded and took over Hong Kong. Since 1940, they had been conducting a series of invasions on Burma (present day Myanmar) and threatened India. There was war everywhere and the British were losing. So let’s make an effort of historical fiction. Eren, a solider in the Eldian army, was stationed at Hong Kong, which everyone back home knew. The Marleyans/Japanese invaded, and took over the island in a surprise defeat. The army retreated and amassed its forces in its largest stronghold in the region, the fortress of Singapore, where they had amassed a force of 100 thousand men, and was taken as impenetrable.

Another enemy attack followed, much stronger than expected. In a matter of days their most important city fell in brutal fashion. Almost everyone was captured, and who wasn’t was taken for dead. The army entered in collapse, the chain of command was broken, the Eldians lost their position. Whatever was left needed to regroup at the nearest Eldian/British controlled area: Burma, which was also under attack. And going from Singapore to Burma was a long, perilous, almost impossible journey. Eren and his unit, or a group of soldiers, managed to escape the chaos.
