revamp of my old creeper design from like... 10... years ago... minecraft old (notes under the cut)

design notes!

i've always personally much preferred fluffy creepers over the more popular "irradiated flesh-melting humanoid mutant" interpretation. i know that a tweet doesn't exactly make something "canon" to the game, but i do like to think this fits with the "leaf-like texture" they were described as having. i do enjoy the "plant creature that explodes to spread pollen" theory, but even if you want to just interpret them as furry not actually leafy it makes sense from a camouflage standpoint. i used to give them pointier more upright ears (actually i usually made them back-pointing ears), but given that their model doesn't prominently display ears (like say, the wolf model does) i decided to allude to their "pig mistake" origins and give them triangular floppy ears like some pigs have. also, everyone always staunchly refused to give them ears despite only ONE mob at the time actually having modeled ears (that being wolves), so the idea of a creature having ears but not having them be individually modeled in the game was 100% plausible. nose and mouth! i am SO PROUD of this interpretation. i always found giving them a huge frown always looked a little goofy, so i tried to think of other ways to get that iconic shape, and i think joining the skin of a nose and a defined lip together really accomplishes this well. not to mention, it's actually closer to the pixelated shape, due to the nose sticking up higher than the lip. (that's just me being self-aggrandizing at this point tho. i don't think i've actually got the "better more correct" interpretation here or anything.) long neck / body plan - i NEVER understood why everyone always INSISTED on giving them humanoid torsos with no arms and four mutant legs when the option of having a LONG NECK was right there???? i mean if you're leaning into the rotated pig body thing it makes sense, but istg it was every. single. one. no matter how un-pig-like they were in every other respect. and besides it was usually a humanoid torso not a pig torso anyway. giving them slightly bent digitigrade legs i think also captures the "sticking out" look of their legs. again, i always preferred a more vertebrate look for creepers rather than the "alien walking around on spindles" look, but this was 100% done back in the day so i'm not as mad about it. also i'm proud of myself for the higher shoulders resulting in an angled body, because that lets me have the body a little longer without having to make something that would have absolutely 100% been modeled with another block for the body. tail is the same deal as ears - the only mob with a modeled tail (wolf) had an extremely prominent tail on its real counterpart, so the idea of the creature having a tail but not having it be modeled is 100% possible. actually snout too - i still don't give my creepers a very prominent snout/muzzle just to keep them recognizable, but long-faced/snouted animals like cows and (at the time) pigs were modeled with square heads, so a real creeper could 100% have a big ol' muzzle. i actually thought creepers had hooves for a long time before i realized the dark texture was only on the front of their legs, not all the way around. i could interpret this as them having longer fur that partially covers their hooves, but i like them with claws as well. they seem like they'd want grip. i did still give them partially joined claws to allude back to the hoof thing tho. but who knows? maybe i'll give them cloven pig-hooves in the future. nothing to say about coloration except that i obviously did a more simplified pattern to match my cartoony style rather than giving this drawing realistic mottling and brindling.

overall i guess my main deal with creepers is that i always wanted creepers to be animals (and specifically fairly large, terrestrial animals, that existed commonly within the world), rather than either insectoid cyborg aliens or cubes of melting flesh (that's one i didn't really touch on - many people were so unwilling to stray from making them cubic in their non-minecraft interpretations of creepers. i understand why for recognizability, but from a "actual creature vs minecraft model" standpoint, mobs just. aren't as square as they are in the game).

also disclaimer - i talk a lot about things that "everyone always did," and the keyword here is "did"- interpretations of creepers are more varied nowadays. it's been like 15 years! design tropes that were widespread through inescapable back in the day are no longer so.

Hello, Whovians — we’re excited to announce the #BringBackTentoo movement!

In July 2008, millions of viewers tuned in to watch ‘Journey’s End’; where the Doctor and Rose were left hand-in-hand on Bad Wolf Bay.

While fandom has remained active, continuing to generate endless works inspired by this iconic pairing, there's sadly been little official content from the people who launched the ship!

Nonetheless, our devotion remains unwavering. We persist, loving the OTP; ceaselessly spreading love and fan-made content worldwide!

The purpose of this movement is to show there is still an audience that is very interested in revisiting these two. One that would love to see the Doctor and Rose together again, on-screen or off, living their best lives in Pete’s World.

Regardless of whether it’s a spin-off, comics, audio adventures, or — and this, we believe, is crucial — anything at all, we would just love to have them back in some way. We’ve realized that perhaps there hasn’t been enough collective buzz to bring this into reality, which is why we’re looking to rally up as much support as we can.

Why now?

Because there’s never been a more perfect time for it.

Already, Russell’s return has been bringing former fans back in droves. Everyone’s waiting with bated breath for RTD2 and the sixtieth anniversary; plus Ncuti, David, and Catherine. With so many fans dipping back into the Doctor Who world, why not strike while the iron’s hot?

At the fifteen-year mark, it might never be this “hot” again!

Plus… nostalgia is a massive market.

A return of Tentoo and Rose after all of these years would be the perfect cherry on top of all of it: closure for so many fans, as well as validation for the only happy ending a Doctor-and-companion pairing ever got in Doctor Who.

And don’t forget — fan campaigns work, especially in the social media age!

A spin-off — too much?

As much as we’d love to see David and Billie back on-screen together as the proper Meta-Crisis Doctor and Rose, we understand that we already have David coming back in a big way, as well as Ncuti Gatwa — our brand new Doctor. It’s a big, BIG ask, trying to get a spin-off out of this. We recognize that.

However, as famished fans who are living off of little more than canonical crumbs and dreams, we will greedily devour anything we can get.

More Big Finish audio adventures

Big Finish has done incredible work for Doctor Who, including one of the only official ‘glimpses’ we’ve gotten into Pete’s World: A couple of short audios featuring Tentoo and Jackie.

Big Finish understands and respects these characters, their relationships, and the overall source material. They’ve shown time and time again that they’re more than capable of doing justice to Doctor Who!

Audio adventures with a focus on the Meta-Crisis Doctor and Rose Tyler would be fantastic. Anything from their adventures with Torchwood and/or UNIT, imaginings of their life with a TARDIS, etc — there are endless possibilities!

Comic book adventures

In 2021, Titan Comics published ‘Empire of the Wolf’, a lovely comic book that gifted us with the best glimpse we’ve ever had into the lives of the Doctor and Rose in Pete’s World:

It was a beautiful, if brief imagining of these two (and includes their daughter), but even so, the vast majority of the story involves Rose being trapped with the Eighth and Eleventh Doctors. We only get a few pages of Tentoo.

Comics would be an excellent way to dive into the parallel world again!

Novels

There are loads of Doctor Who novels with amazing stories about Rose and the Tenth Doctor (like 'The Stone Rose' by Jacqueline Rayner). But, here's the thing: there's just one official novel that dives into the whole Metacrisis and Rose relationship... And guess what? Fans are really craving content that stays true to RTD and Julie Gardner's original vision for this couple.

The good news is, there are tons of talented writers out there who would jump at the chance to create legit Meta-Crisis stories, and some would even do it for free!

An animated series

We recognize that this would be a tremendous undertaking, but imagine: You can do incredible things with animation that aren’t possible with film. It would appeal to fans of all ages, and Billie and David have more than proven themselves to be excellent voice actors. There are all sorts of stories that could be created in this medium.

But let’s say we went with the first choice…

A spin-off/miniseries

RTD has been very vocal about his plans for spin-offs. Billie and David are willing, and it hasn’t been so long that the pairing has lost relevance… Although, in Doctor Who, does anything ever really lose relevance? The show is known for bringing back old characters. Enemies, companions… Doctors:

It’s obvious that David seems to have no issue with playing the Doctor. Furthermore, even Billie Piper has recently expressed interest in a spin-off!

In 2019, she told Doctor Who magazine:

“I would like to see a one-off dark comedy about Rose and the Doctor in the parallel universe”.

Then, even more recently in December 2022, she told Buzzfeed [on returning to Doctor Who]:

“If it was like four episodes all shot in London, then yeah, I’d be like a rat-up-a-drainpipe for that.”

Four episodes of Tentoo and Rose in London? What could be more perfect than that?

Wouldn’t a spin-off overshadow Ncuti Gatwa?

It doesn’t have to! If a spin-off were to happen, it wouldn’t necessarily have to happen immediately — it can happen after Ncuti has been established as the Doctor, and after RTD has re-established himself as showrunner. We’d just like for it to be part of the conversation, and let those in charge know that people are interested.

So… What about the people who didn’t like the ending?

Yes, there are some naysayers out there. People who refuse to acknowledge Tentoo’s legitimacy as the Doctor; others who refuse to believe that Rose could ever be truly happy with him, and vice versa.

This, sadly, is willful ignorance. Not only has Russell T. Davies, the man who wrote Journey’s End — who created Tentoo and Rose — confirmed that they're happy; the Doctor himself, David Tennant, will be the first person to tell you that those two are blissfully shagging their lives away at all times. And god bless him for it.

We’ve come to find that a lot of people who aren’t on board with the ending just didn’t understand it, which is fine — what better way to understand this pairing than by seeing more of them?

Festivals in your hometown were always funny and entertaining, and you absolutely loved them. You spent the night among the villagers, chatting and sometimes joining the dances illuminated by the candlelights, and in a warm mid-summer night, that’s how you met him. Your bodies ungraciously crashed together during one of the dances, since both of you were distracted laughing with the momentary partner you both had assigned until you were supposed to spin around and change position.

«Who are you?» you timidly asked the tall, handsome boy who was securely holding your waist with his right hand, while his left one was gracefully placed on your elbow, his hold being the only thing preventing you from falling on the floor.

«Whoever you want me to be.» he answered, his eyes wide in stupor and a wide smile on his lips. If anybody else ever tried to use this kind of cheesy pick up line with you, you would have immediately rolled your eyes in annoyance, apologizing for crashing into him and then going back on your way, but there was something mesmerizing about the boy, his gentle smile and his soft eyes that made you giggle, a faint blush on your cheeks.

As if you were in a fairy-tale, the world around you shortly disappeared, before the boy asked you to dance with him. Needless to say, the answer was yes. You spent the whole night with the charming and mysterious boy, which introduced himself as Seungmin, and the more time passed, the more you did not want him to leave.

Both of you were seated on a small bench, far away from the crowded square and the main streets, enjoying each other’s company while sharing some sweets that Seungmin offered to buy. There was something hypnotic about him, and you could not understand what exactly it was. You were sure you were not under the effect of a love spell and it was not the first time you were alone with a boy, either, so, why did you felt like a young girl dealing with this first crush?

The timid and dim lights of dawn surprised both of you, which with a mutual blush realized that you sat there talking all night. Being the gentleman he is, Seungmin escorted you back home.

«I hope to see you again.» Seungmin said, and you nodded, heart hammering in your chest. Seungmin smiled, inching closer to place a short but sweet kiss on your cheek, before walking away.

One month later, you and Seungmin were officially a couple. Summer eventually started to give way to autumn, and you gave yourself to your boyfriend on a rainy, autumn evening.

That night, Seungmin made love to you until your legs kept shaking, his touch melting your skin and his kisses being the only grip on reality.

«Come on, be a good girl,» Seungmin mouthed against your throat, holding back a strained moan, his deep and hard thrusts overstimulating you once again, «I know you can come again.» his left hand reached out to lift your trembling thighs around his waist.

«Seungmin, I-» Closing your eyes as his name left your lips in a whimper, you clenched your jaw as your right hand buried itself in his soft brown hair, roughly pulling on it. «I can’t.»

«But you were the one who told me to ruin you,» Seungmin cooed, biting dark marks on your throat and your collarbones. «I want to make you cum until you can barely form any words, » in the brief moment your eyes met, you swore you saw his eyes flashing blue. «Until you can barely beg for me to let you come.» you threw your head back, the discomfort you had previously felt totally subdued to pleasure, the sinful movements of his hips along his voice giving you trouble to keep your breath steady. You came again not too far later, stuttering on your words as you begged for him to let you come, and as soon as you heard Seungmin’s affirmative response, you let go once again, the familiar sensation of your orgasm bringing you once again on cloud nine. Seungmin came few thrusts later, the bed harshly slamming against the wall as he buried himself inside you with a choked moan and his cheeks flushed pink.

«You did great,» Seungmin said, peppering your face with kisses, the dominant behaviour he showed until few moments earlier, now completely disappeared. You giggled, sneaking your arms around his neck using all the strength you had, and pulled him against your body. «Such a good girl for me.» he added, carefully rolling you around – his length still buried inside you, but now you were laying on top of him.

«Seungmin.» you groaned, on the verge of falling asleep. «Why, and I mean this whole heartedly, are you still hard?» Seungmin’s laughter caused you to move by inertia, and as sleep was about to take over you, you thought you heard Seungmin’s voice answering a soft «Must be the moon’s fault.»

Three months passed since the first night you and Seungmin met, and sometimes, you had the feeling the boy was hiding something from you. You never questioned him about it, you figured he would eventually come around; after all, he just discovered about you being a witch, so it was fair to give him his space and his time, you just needed to trust him. You had your fair shares of suspicions when his eyes would flash blue while he was being possessive and dominant while you were having sex, but you never voiced your thoughts.

“For all I know, he could be an incubus or a werewolf”, you thought. You learned to know Seungmin, despite his rough behaviour during sex, he was the sweetest boy you have ever met, and you knew that asking the right question at the wrong time could end up in him trying to go a little easier on you. Thing, which you absolutely did not want to happen.

During sex, Seungmin brought you to the verge of tears more than once, your lips were bruised due to the rough kissing and biting, and your legs were sore; despite this, you knew that the pleasure, the aftercare and the cuddles were absolutely worth any kind of pain.

«What are you thinking about? You’re blushing.» Seungmin said, brushing a strand of hair behind your ear using his pinky finger. You both stopped in the crowded streets of the village, your date coming to an end since your boyfriend accepted to walk you around to buy herbs you needed.

«Nothing,» you sighed, noticing how Seungmin seemed to tense up all of a sudden. «I spaced out. Is everything okay?» you asked, noticing how he nervously looked at the crowd, as if looking for someone.

Seungmin nodded, «I forgot I promised to meet Chris,» he said, before sweetly pecking your lips. «You think you can get home by yourself?» You nodded at him, and he kissed you once again, the feeling of his lips lingering on yours even if you parted ways. You walked home with a happy heart and a smile on your lips, but sadly, your happiness turned out to be a fleeting feeling.

«Well, look who decided to come back home.» an unfamiliar voice said, and you immediately tensed up. Two boys around your age were waiting for your return in front of your front door: one was leaning against the brick wall next to the door, and the other was sitting on the small step in front of it, his chin casually placed on his palm. «I hope you had a wonderful day, sweetheart.�� the seated boy stood up, and took a step towards you.

«Don’t move.» your eyes flashed golden in a silent spell to block his movement, and his jaw tensed immediately.

«Now, sweetheart, it would be nice if you didn’t get on my nerves.» the stranger said with a smile, which gave you an incredibly uneasy feeling. Despite him being handsome, there was something in his behaviour, which was definitely unsettling. You were too focused on him that you didn’t notice the smirk plastered on the other boy’s lips, which simply nodded his head with a scoff. While your spell was still active, you glanced at him, before the feeling of a short blade pressed against your jaw made you freeze. Stupidly, you didn’t consider them having any kind of back up. You deduced the boy must have pressed the blade a bit too harshly, since you felt the warm sensation of blood trailing down your throat.

«Oh, you hurt Seungmin’s pretty mate.» the boy you blocked spat, and your spell dissipate due to your sudden confusion at your boyfriend’s name being mentioned. He scoffed, pleased at how you were easily triggered, and nodded at the boy standing behind you.

Don’t hurt her any further,» he instructed, a smirk plastered on his face. «We can’t blackmail then with a dead mate.» a sharp pain in your neck made you stumble forward, and your senses were surrounded in darkness, falling in the stranger’s arms.

As soon as he parted from you, Seungmin quickly met Chris and the rest of the pack. «They’re here again,» Chris simply said, and Seungmin understood that he was referring to the nomad’s pack which occasionally intruded their territory. «Apparently, they want to settle down.» he scoffed, holding out a letter for everyone to see.

«What are we going to do?» Hyunjin questioned the alpha, and he shook his head in response.

«They’ll understand we’re not leaving this place, by hook or by crook.» Chris said, and the other nodded at him. They all grew fond of their territory – the woods, the village next to it, and no one wanted to leave.

Seungmin paled all of a sudden, and Changbin rushed at his side. Explaining his worry for you, they followed him back into the village, all the way to your house. Seungmin’s uneasiness grew each step he took, the possibility of something happening to you making his heart sink in his chest. He and the others stopped in their tracks in front of your house; the basket, which contained the herbs you and Seungmin bought, was on the floor, the herbs scattered on the driveway and blatantly trampled. What confirmed the fear squeezing his heart was your necklace, laying on the floor. Seungmin hesitantly kneeled to take it in his hands, the broken chain indicated that it had been torn and deliberately left as a warning.

«They took her.» Seungmin said, eyes flashing blue, about to let his wolf take control. Chris’ strong hold on his shoulder was what made him restrain from giving up to his instinct.

«We’ll get her back.» the alpha said, and Seungmin nodded, rage and regret filling up his heart.

“It’s my fault,” he thought, “I shouldn’t have left her alone.”

You woke up feeling cold; you hesitantly opened your eyes, a dark and minimal environment meeting your eyes.

“Am I in a dungeon?!” you thought, the previous events coming back to your mind; you jolted forward, immediately checking your clothes for any sign of things out of the ordinary. The loud shackling noise of the metal chains attached to your handcuffs did not go unnoticed, and you tried to free yourself with the help of your magic.

«Try as much as you want,» your head snapped up as you recognized the voice owner’s, which was looking at you with an amused smile on his face, sitting on a wooden chair turned backwards. «the handcuffs are enchanted, so your magic is pretty much useless.» he said, running a finger through his soft, brown hair. «Also, no one didn’t try anything, Seungmin’s scent lingering on you is disgusting.» You furrowed your brows, confusion evident on your face. The boy let out a surprised laugh. «He didn’t tell you?! You’re in for a big surprise then, sweetheart.» without adding anything else, he got up and left, whistling to a song you didn’t know, and immediately decided you didn’t like.

«Chris,» Seungmin said, rushing into the other’s cottage. «It’s been three days.» Chris sighed, acknowledging the other’s state: Seungmin looked like he hadn’t sleep since he found out you had been kidnapped, and knowing him, he probably did. «If you’re not coming up with a plan, I’m gonna go alone.» Seungmin spat, his kind and gentle gaze completely gone, subdued to angry and bright blue eyes.

Chris got up from his desk chair, and slowly made his way in front of his friend. «Seungmin,» his authoritative voice said, «I understand your concern, and I plan to do everything to save her,» Chris’ eyes flashed a bright red «but don’t challenge my authority.» Chris’ firm voice caused Seungmin immediately adverted his gaze, looking at the floor while harshly clenching his jaw, he sighed, and nodded; Chris hated using his status to make the pack follow his order, and he shortly felt bad for it, but he couldn’t let one of his bestfriend act when his actions would be clouded by his anger and furtherly put him in danger.

«Sweetheart, it’s already been so long,» the boy said, playing with your conception of time while harshly grabbing your chin with his right hand. «Will your mate ever come to get you?» he tilted your head, and dangerously inched closer to your lips. «Or shall I mark you as mine instead? He didn’t even mark you, what a coward.» he scoffed, his eyes glancing at your lips; despite your weak state, you managed to kick him in the stomach, using all your strength. He smirked to himself, before standing up and brushing the dust off his clothes. «If by the full moon they haven’t given up, your pretty mate will definitely have an unpleasant surprise.» he said, before walking away while whistling that obnoxious song.

If you had to be honest, you completely lost perception of time: they kept you in a mostly dark room, so you couldn’t tell when the day took the place of the night and vice versa. Despite their harsh and obnoxious attitude, they still gave you the essential amount of food and water a human being could need, you simply decided not to eat and kick the tray away occasionally, out of spite.

Deep in your heart, you knew that Seungmin would have come for you, but sometimes, the boy that kidnapped you managed to get under your skin until the point where you started to doubt it. You didn’t even know how many of there were beside him, since the only boys you saw in the face were him and the other one who was lying against the wall back then, so you didn’t do anything; you were left there, alone with your thoughts.

You felt guilty for having doubted about Seungmin – probably, few days later. With your eyes lost somewhere in the ceiling, your head was resting against the wall, as the boy was still trying to convince you that your “pretty mate” would have never come to get you, almost getting under your skin once again, when the wooden door of the chamber slammed open, and seven unfamiliar faces barged in, followed by Seungmin. You immediately lifted your head from the wall in surprise, your heart immediately feeling lighter as your eyes briefly met.

Seungmin’s eyes were still a bright blue, and he roughly yanked the boy up to the chair and slammed him against the wall; Seungmin was holding him by the throat, and you could see claws on his hands; you thought you must having hallucinations due to your lack of food. You didn’t have time to investigate any further, or try to recognize his friend’s faces, as one of them immediately kneeled in front of you, occupying part of your sight.

«Hi! I’m Jisung,» he said, a friendly smile on his face. «I’m Hyunjin!» another one said, intentionally kneeling behind Jisung and hugging his shoulders, so that now they both completely prevented you from seeing Seungmin. «And he’s Jeongin,» he pointed to a boy which kneeled next to you as well, offering you a gentle smile. «We’re Seungmin’s family, so you’re safe now.» Hyunjin said, a smile on his pretty lips, and you tried with all your might to ignore the traces of blood the three of them had on his clothes, or on their faces.

«I’m really sorry,» Jeongin’s sweet voice said, and you looked at him, confused. «But it’s better if you don’t hear, either.» you furrowed your brows as his gentle hands covered your ears, shielding them from any noise. Your eyes flew towards Seungmin’s direction, and you distinctly saw him turning into a wolf. Hyunjin reached out to cover your eyes, but your mind must have decided that during these days, you endured too much.

Feeling safe, you let darkness surround your senses.

You woke up with the feeling of a hand gently running through your hair; your eyes snapped open, and fear shortly paralyzed your body. Seungmin’s startled gaze met yours, and you gradually relaxed, looking around to take in your surroundings, pleased with the fact that you were finally home. You closed your eyes once again, and Seungmin kept caressing your hair, your cheeks, and your nose. Tentatively, you reached out to hold Seungmin’s other hand, which was pressed flat on the mattress.

«I can’t believe you didn’t tell me you were a werewolf,» you whispered, your throat burning due to the lack of talking in the past days.

«To be fair, when we first met, I said I was a dog person.» Seungmin innocently smiled at you, shrugging.

«Oh my God» you groaned, hiding a smile behind your hands which now both covered your face.

«How angry are you on a scale from one to ten?» Seungmin mumbled, and the guilt that transpared from his tone made your heart clench.

«A solid one and a half.» you answered with a sigh, asking him to help you move so that he could lay down next to you. You thanked Seungmin for having bathed you and cleaned you up, and you weakly cuddled up to him.

«I’m so sorry,» he mumbled in your hair, and with a strained whine you turned on your side, so that you could hug me closer.

«It’s not your fault, Seungmin.» you said, and the sudden, loud rumbling of your stomach interrupted anything Seungmin was about to say.

«Let’s go,» Seungmin kissed the top of your head before escaping your grip around his waist, helping you to get up from the bed. «I’ll make you something to eat.»

«Then I take that back, I’m not angry anymore.» you joked, silently thanking Seungmin for having picked you up instead of making you walk all the way to the kitchen.

With a full stomach, you definitely felt better; you stretched your limbs, still feeling a bit sore, but you felt better than you thought.

«He said that you didn’t mark me, what does it mean?» you saw Seungmin eyes flash blue with irritation at the mention of the boy, before his gentle smile returned; he quietly explained everything to you, the special meaning that marking his mate holds for a wolf, and the inevitable stronger bond that grows between the wolf and his mate.

«Generally, we mate during the full moon,» he explained.

«So cliché,» you answered with a smile, getting up from your chair, pleased with the fact that you weren’t dizzy anymore. «When is going to be the next full moon? I lost track of days back there.»

«Tonight.» Seungmin answered, furrowing his brows in confusion at your question. You nodded, clapping your hands twice and urging him to get up.

«Come on, pretty boy, we have a mating ritual to complete.» you said, holding Seungmin’s hand and leading him to your room.

«You’ve just been kidnapped, and you’re still weak!» Seungmin said, as you lightly pushed his chest, so that he was sitting on the edge of your bed. «You know I tend to be rough-» with a finger on his lips, you silenced your boyfriend and sat on his lap, Seungmin’s arms loosely wrap themselves around your waist.

«I want to be your mate,» you said, pressing your forehead against his, Seungmin’s eyes appearing even bigger from that angulation.

«And I love you.»

«Are you sure?» Seungmin asked once again, and as you nodded, he leaned up to briefly kiss your lips. «I love you, too.» he said, re-adjusting your positions on the bed so that you laid under him, the dim light of the full moon illuminating your bedroom through your window.

i kept forgetting to do this, but i finally remembered we got permission to upload the full pieces done for the SEASONS ZINE! they're not quite as good without @deathchic's gorgeous prose accompanying them, but they were really exciting to put together.

full breakdowns of the symbolism and unobstructed views of each card can be found beneath the cut, fully transcribed. as a warning, they are LONG.

my category was "fall," which encompassed the folie and save rock and roll eras, including the welcome to the new administration mixtape and pax am days ep. seeing as i've a great deal of love for all four of those works and fall out boy has four members, i decided to highlight each work by creating a tarot-inspired card, each featuring a member of the band.

Welcome to the New Administration: Pete Wentz

Pete was the primary organizer behind the viral campaign for CitizensFOB, making him the ideal pick for this card. His card prominently features his bass guitar with the iconic Clandestine logo.

Repeating Number 4: 4 stars above the eagle's head, 4 markings across the cube at the center, 4 members of the band

The tri-colored drapes behind Pete were suspended behind the band on the mixtape cover. The curtains parting over a black background signifies the oncoming hiatus.

The cube-like geometric shape in front of the eagle represents the single promotional art done for "America's Suitehearts," which was one of the tracks demoed in the mixtape and one of the singles that connected most prominently with the themes of the mixtape.

The shield Pete carries and the eagle mounted behind him are both symbols that were used to promote the CitizensFOB viral campaign, featuring the catchphrase: "For Our Betterment, There Is More Mayhem."

Pete's apparel is what he was wearing for the Believers Never Die Part Deux tour, in which there was a lot of direct satirization of Wall Street and American politics. All the band members were wearing suits and looking visibly battered, and Pete had a nosebleed. Patrick also has a nosebleed on his own card; both Pete and Patrick's cards are pre-hiatus projects.

The symbols at the four corners of the card are indicative of the imagery surrounding the campaign. The pointing hand comes from the cover for the mixtape; the airplane is a reference to the "Mailbaick Vaintey and Pidetaerson Firm" videos and accounts that were used in the viral campaign; the wolf head is for the "Alpha Dog" demo, which made its debut on the CitizensFOB mixtape and namedropped "Welcome to the New Administration" title in its demo form; the boomerang is for the "Lake Effect Kid" demo, which also made its debut on the CitizensFOB mixtape.

"The Citizen" is an obvious reference to the "Citizens For Our Betterment" campaign name.

The card features 12 colors, all colorpicked from the Welcome to the New Administration mixtape cover. This represents the 12 artists who contributed the mixtape musically (not merely speaking roles): The Academy Is..., Butch Watcher, The Cab, Cobra Starship, Fall Out Boy, Four Year Strong, Gym Class Heroes, Hey Monday, The Hush Sound, Panic! At The Disco, A Rocket to the Moon, and Tyga.

The background elements are indicative of the state of the band prior to the hiatus: the leaves are in tatters and shreds. The sunflower is a native Chicago variant, Helianthus occidentalis, late-blooming sunflower that lasts well into early fall. Sunflowers obviously have a strong association with the sun, but they also stand for adoration, loyalty, good fortune, vitality, longevity, and prosperity. The bright yellow color also associates them with intelligence, happiness, and friendship. Van Gogh had a famous Sunflower series, leading to the obvious connection to Infinity on High, the album preceding the Folie era. This made it a good pick for the pre-hiatus cards, since it was loyalty and friendship that led to the hiatus and ultimately to the band's longevity and vitality. Both Folie à Deux and the Welcome to the New Administration mixtape had more yellow tones than their post-hiatus counterparts as well, thus the pick of a yellow flower.

Folie à Deux: Patrick Stump

Patrick has stated that Folie à Deux is the most "him" out of Fall Out Boy's discography, making him ideal for this card.

Repeating Number 4: 4 electric bursts from the microphone, 4-sided symbol mounted on the microphone, 4 ruffles on Dr. Benzedrine's front

The card features 13 colors to represent the 13 tracks on the album itself (excluding bonus tracks). All colors were colorpicked directly from the album cover.

The anchor is a reference to the lyrics of "27," with a crown symbol on it in reference to "Headfirst Slide into Cooperstown on a Bad Bet."

There are 9 stripes on the upper side of the background, as a reference to "West Coast Smoker" - the suicidal cats have 9 lives.

The microphone represents Patrick's role as vocalist. It is also a reference to "(Coffee's for Closers)," as the microphone stand is electrified.

Patrick's right half is modeled after his costume in the "America's Suitehearts" video, "Dr. Benzedrine." He has a nosebleed in reference to the lyrics of the song that is his namesake, "20 Dollar Nose Bleed." Both he and Pete represent pre-hiatus projects, and both have bleeding noses.

Patrick's left half is modeled after his costume in the "What A Catch, Donnie" video. He has 20 stripes on his shirt - half black and half white, keeping with themes of duality. The 20 total stripes also references "20 Dollar Nose Bleed."

The background on the bottom half is shattered into 15 visible fragments, indicating the 15 tracks of the full album (when including bonus tracks such as "Pavlove" and "Lullabye"). There are also 27 fragments scattered between the two halves of Patrick, representing "27" and the 27 club.

The symbols at the four corners have dual meanings, in keeping with the theme of duality. The bee is both a lyrical reference to "Lullabye" and a nod to the intro of "Disloyal Order of Water Buffaloes"; the storm cloud is both a nod to the lyrics of "She's My Winona" and a reference to the "Mr. Sandman" character in the "America's Suitehearts" video; the horseshoe crab is both a reference to the lyrics on "The (Shipped) Gold Standard" and to the character of "H. Shoe Crab" in the "America's Suitehearts" video; the sunflower acknowledges the lyrics in "27" about shooting the sunshine into one's veins and nods to the flower on the hat of the "Donnie the Catcher" character in the "America's Suitehearts" video.

"The Mirror" references the theming of duality on the album, as well as the fact that the vinyl required a mirror for one to read the tracklisting since the text was printed backwards.

The card features heavy themes of duality to suit the theme of a "madness shared by two." The image is bisected in several respects: Patrick is fractured in two, both halves wearing different costumes and expressions; the shadow in the center is split down the middle; the broken heart in the upper half is also two faces; the image is divided both horizontally and vertically; and a dichotomy of fire (the electrified microphone stand) and water (the anchor).

Save Rock and Roll: Joe Trohman

Joe took a much more active writing role post-hiatus and on this album in particular, making him a good pick to represent Save Rock and Roll.

Repeating Number 4: 4 symbols, 4-pointed symbol holding up the others

The card features 11 colors, representing 11 tracks on the album. All colors were color-picked directly from the album cover, with an emphasis on reds, to suit the "red palette" imagery surrounding the album.

This card is saturated with imagery from the 11-part video series the band released in conjunction with the album, "The Youngblood Chronicles." Joe is wearing the costume he had for the majority of the video series prior to his death.

The card features heavy fire imagery due to this being a motif on the album and on the associated video series, with smoke rising up in the background. This is indicative of the band "rising from the ashes" post-hiatus, and also symbolizes the resurrection of Joe's character at the end of "The Youngblood Chronicles."

The guitar-axe weapon is from the "Death Valley" video and would have been his weapon if he weren't dead at this point in time. The card prominently features Joe's guitar, albeit turned into a weapon, as befitting the theming.

The four symbols mounted behind Joe are also from "The Youngblood Chronicles" - the symbol representing the "Silence the Noise" group; the symbol associated with the gang of child bikers; the symbol the Prince of Darkness tattoos on Joe's hand; and the crown-and-volcano symbol associated with the band post-hiatus. The symbol upon which these four icons are mounted is found on the floor in Heaven in the "Save Rock and Roll" video.

Joe is the only one who does not face the audience directly, and is turned in profile. Given the fictional nature of the narrative of "The Youngblood Chronicles," he has the most distance from the fourth wall.

The symbols at the four corners of the card also draw from imagery from "The Youngblood Chronicles." The disco ball is from the "Where Did the Party Go" video, in which Joe's character dies. The briefcase is a consistent object throughout the entire series, and serves to incite the entire narrative. Patrick's hook hand, also seen throughout, is significant due to Patrick's unwitting role as Joe's murderer. The snake, seen in "Young Volcanoes" and "Just One Yesterday," is representative of the group's collective trauma.

"The Defender" is a reference to the names of the characters of Fall Out Boy in "The Youngblood Chronicles," as they are referred to as "The Defenders of the Faith" in the longform video's opening credits. This title is in and of itself a reference to the title track on Save Rock and Roll.

Pax Am Days: Andy Hurley

The Pax Am Days EP is closest to the band's hardcore roots in terms of sonics and composition, and Andy is the most active in hardcore circles today, which makes him an ideal pick for this card.

Repeating 4: 4 holes in the American flag, 4 supports visible on the toms and bass drum, 4 tears on the left side of the wall

The card features 9 colors, all color-picked from the EP cover, per the 9 tracks on the EP (counting the bonus "New Dreams" Naked Rayguns cover).

There are also 9 tears on the right side of the wall, also befitting the 9 tracks on the EP.

The black-and-white checkered background represents the Pax Am studio where the EP was recorded and after which it was named.

Andy is the only one whose card features him looking directly at the audience, to signify the more intimate recording sessions behind the EP, in which studio chatter and laughter can be heard between every track. Being the drummer of the band, Andy's drumkit is naturally featured very prominently.

The crown-volcano symbol that's become synonymous with the band post-hiatus is (barely) visible mounted on Andy's bass drum. This is a similarity Andy's card shares with Joe's, as they both represent post-hiatus projects.

The American flag was also present in the studio for recording. The flag being torn and shredded on the card relates to tracks on the EP that discuss disillusionment with the American dream ("American Made"). It is also indicative of the eras preceding and following the Pax Am EP (Folie à Deux and the Welcome to the New Administration mixtape, and then American Beauty / American Psycho).

The four symbols at the corners of the card all represent lyrics present on the EP: the crown comes from "We Were Doomed from the Start (The King is Dead)"; the lion comes from "Demigods"; the black widow comes from "Hot to the Touch, Cold on the Inside"; the skull comes from "Love, Sex, Death."

"The Believer" is a reference to the final compilation prior to the band's four-year hiatus, "Believers Never Die." With the band returning seemingly from the dead, it seems that believers truly never die. This is paired with Andy reportedly being the only member of the band who always believed they would get back together, even if none of the others did.

The background elements for the post-hiatus cards feature leaves with much more reddish tones. The color red has a great deal of symbolic meanings, including high energy, vitality, strength, and prosperity. Additionally, the fallen leaves are rich and whole, to contrast the shredded-looking leaves in the background for the pre-hiatus cards. After the hiatus, the band's overall health and mentality was much healthier.

The flower in the background is a Madame Julia Correvon clematis, a wine-red Chicago variant of clematis that blooms in the summer and fall. Clematis flowers are associated with mental acuity, wisdom, travel, aspiration, and mischief. Red clematis in particular is associated with passion, energy, good luck, prosperity, security, physical vitality, and courage. This, along with the red color scheme, made it a good flower to represent the cards for the post-hiatus projects.

the post i intended to write:

what i intended to write in the tags but is long enough to become its own essay:

howls moving castle is a transgender comfort movie for sure and spirited away is absolutely a classic but princess mononoke is My ghibli movie. i saw it for the first time as a single digit age child when the czech dub played on TV and i was probably too young for it, but because Animated Movie = Kid's Movie i ended up absorbing the most violent animated movie i had ever seen and i think it permanently changed my brain chemistry and i regret nothing, i was so deeply enamored with the large forest and its godly beasts, i was entrenched in the narrative of the curse that slowly swallows you up, and of course san was the coolest character i had ever seen in my entire short life and i had several OCs inspired by her vibe and design and several others ended up with similar face markings, like who out there is immune to feral wolfgirl with Knives? not me that's for certain. none of my friends had seen this movie and over the years i was starting to feel like maybe it didn't exist? how could something that left such a huge impact on me not make a dent in the world around me? does nobody remember the giant wolves and the moss covered forest and all the wriggly curse worms?? BUT THEN i found the dvd in a norwegian cd shop and the norwegian dub was out of sync and it didn't have a norwegian subtitle track so i'd have to watch it with swedish subtitles, which i did many many times, and one time some czech guys were visiting while i was watching and went heeeey it's princess mononoke! good movie!! and i felt tethered to reality again. i keep coming back to this movie and every time i understand it a little more, because of course a small child such as myself wouldn't understand much of the plot beyond Angy Wolf Girl Go Grrrrrr, and the more i watch it the more i find myself relating to ashitaka even though he didn't make as much of an impression on me as Cool Wolf Princess did the first time, and the world is cursed but we find reasons to keep living, and i know the "i'll slit your throat" "you're beautiful" scene is Iconic but almost every screenshot or redraw or gifset leaves out how san drops the knife and recoils as if the vulnerability of the confession will burn her, and maybe it's just very easy to Get me with two outcasts who can't fit in fully anywhere anymore find eachother storyline but yeah anyway i rewatched this movie the other day and it's still really good

#and of course it made a dent in the world around me i just wasn't able to see it

anybody else up completely redesigning the cast of one of their stories to make it original and not a pokemon universe based one

no? just me? shame

thoughts and philosphys behind their design changes and such below the cut!

tawny: borderline unchanged! besides a little bit of change to his ear markings and removal of all plusle association. and thank god because fuck those plus tails man. but his design is so strong i couldnt really change a whole lot - thank you 2020 wheat for making such a good design!

tawnys scars however got a HEAVY redesign them make them look more intense. those lame scratches from before did not come from a dragon. added a bit more spread out to his neck too for a big bite mark across the back of his neck. i kept his usual trouble with opening that eye over because i think its iconic and much more interesting than just keeping it closed or removing it

also he limps now. he broke his leg in the attack too and didnt rest it properly so it didnt heal properly. i decided against giving that a visual indicator because i dont think it would really have one logically - this isnt a cinderpelt situation, he broke it by landing at a poor angle and then didnt let it heal properly, so it wouldnt really be scratched up or be twisted in any way.

nutmeg/lewis: a name change to match some new lore about rabbits (naming them after stuff they'd know about instead of human names) and also because as much as i liked the name lewis, it felt very strange having it stand out as the super different name in the family

otherwise? also borderline unchanged besides a few new and recoloured markings to make them a little more unique from his brother. they arent twins or anything man. nothing else to say about it really, hes literally the same guy as before basically.

hibiscus: a complete design overhaul, although using the philosphy of her old design; she still looks like shes related to her kids without looking like a carbon copy like the old design. i wanted her to appear as Parent with only a few shared traits with her kids instead of all of them. you can see what they inherited from her and what they didnt instead of them being borderline clones of hibiscus

i leaned heavier into the pinks and making her lighter than her children (sunnyside warren is mostly dark coated rabbits, so shes on the lighter side for them) and i tried to inspire a bit of a flower motif with her face marking, relating back to her name. i wanted to actually make her look a bit like the flower in general

continues to be the only character in shattered glass with an accessory! i couldnt remove it. its iconic. and i made her future scars a little more obvious on her, although the design pictured is where she is early-story

sarsaparilla/elsa: a name change again for the reasons spoken of in nutmegs section, and also because of the unfortunate frozen association. i did not name them (they are from a very old rp and was the child of a character who was not mine)

a COMPLETE overhaul pretty much, going from poochyena to a jackalope of all things, making them the only fantasy animal in the story, although jackalopes are not regarded as such in universe (instead being considered a rare mutation of normal rabbits and are treated like and called rabbits). i thought it was fun as it makes their role as the soothsayer of the warren more standout in their design by giving them a very unique trait. im sure this special treatment given to them because of it implies nothing.

this was because becoming a xenofiction story, the implication of going 1-1 with their pokemon species and making them a wolf of some sort felt... contridictary with their role, so i completely overhauled them from a young-ish wolf to a elderly jackalope, old and wise and full of wisdom and future visions, for sure. i managed to keep a little bit of that old design intact with their markings and colours though, as a little nod to poochyena my friend poochyena

firecracker/jenga: so the backstory around sunnyside warren, the home of all of the rabbits we've seen so far, is that they struck a deal with stoats that moved into the area to stop them from hunting them. these stoats are firecrackers parents.

previously a mightyena/braxian hybrid, i wanted to go a completely different route for jenga. i dont know why i gravitated to the stoat family, it just slotted in... perfectly. they had been slated to have been a childhood friend of tawny and nutmeg before drawing away after nutmegs death and ultimately going missing entirely, i felt like slotting them into the role of the future guardian of the warren kept the reason for them to interact with the siblings since theyre of similar age while providing inheritant conflict that would keep them further apart when they get a bit older despite their shared experiences.

so! a changed name for a new stoat name custom (named after more human concepts) and basically the exact same colours with a different set of markings to give that firecracker name good reason. i think they came out SUPER solid and cute i love it sooo much

fun fact: i initially planned for it to have the black as a base with white and orange markings, but after colouring the rabbits first i realized that white would look nice as a contrast against the darker coats of the warren, and i think that was a good call.

stripes: OH BOY. the hardest of all the designs in here to figure out. ve was the only one i hadnt settled on a species on when i started sketching these about a month ago and i still didnt until about a week ago - i initially planned on vem being a pegasus, and playing around with the exact design of pegasi in the universe (they were going to be quite bulky and designed for mountain environments, and their wings were going to be more for gliding than flying), but in the end i felt this didnt suit xem, even if this meant ditching the wings from their design for reasons ill get into in arkeas section

i knew i wanted her to be big, and i didnt want to make xem a predator of some sort, so i was kind of stuck with either monkey, marsupial or large herbivore. i am NOT drawing a monkey and i couldnt think of a marsupial that really fit vem, so after much messing around i settled on mountain goat.

xer colours stayed effectly the same, but i converted their "stripes" into sort of a patched classic tabby cat appearance. im not really sure why i did that, honestly i just thought of it randomly and thought it looked good. ve didnt have many markings before so i just started throwing stuff around until something stuck. some early concepts leaned more pink and orange calico markings or doing a cloud theme.

also, a missing leg, because i realized lately that i have a habit of making all my disabled characters anthro animals that fly who have a flight-related disability. while a fun idea to play with (coming up with the way flight aids would work, the ways a flight disability would effect someone in a flight-based society, etc), pegasus!stripes had this instead of the leg at the time, and then i realized my trend and wanted to make it something that was more grounded in real disabilities instead of making them all based in traits we, as humans, dont have.

CLAWIN: ohh. clawin clawin clawin. im so glad i went for a redesign angle on this story purely for him - i love minun, its one of my favourite pokemon, but that yellow looked so FUCK UGLY on him man. this design i did in one take, and i nailed it i think. its such a huge glow up im so proud of how it came out

first, his eyes, which i consider one of his most important traits - i kept over his weird heterochromia, although instead of giving him an unexplained blank red eye (leftover from when clawin was evil and the reincarnation of a dead character), i gave him a broken iris. coming from a concussion he had earlier in life, his vision is blurry in that eye as a result. its a fun way to keep his "strange looking" red eye while it having a reason to exist. not that i minded him having a random evil looking red eye, but i think its more fun to base it in realism.

i especially am fond of making him a hare instead of a rabbit, making him tower above most of the rest of the cast and giving me the option of making the guy ive always written as being very limited in his expressions (its probably autism now instead of being emotionally repressed) a little more creepy factor by leaning into hares really freaky eyes. not seriously or wahtever, but i think it gets weird when he stares at you for too long.

in general tawny and clawin are meant to contrast eachother as characters, and i wanted to match that design-wise too, which i think i finally succeeded with here. tawny being soft, round and sweet looking and clawin being long, lanky and a little scary looking, despite tawny being full of hate and clawin being nice to a fault.

GLARE: just like stripes, just a complete overhaul for them. again, 1-1-ing an umbreon, especially for the character who is romantically involved with clawin, felt strange for their dynamic. i ended up landing on a flying fox for him instead, since it still kept the 1-1 in concept (being a flying fox instead of just a fox) and its a lot more fun to get a little more out there with the species, especially in a story of mostly rabbits. i can see them being awkward going forward in terms of anatomy and interacting with other characters as a result, but i think it was a good choice and made glare, one of the less inspired designs in the cast before, far more visually interesting

i ended up keeping the umbreon yellow around though, although with a leaning into a heavier purple for the base and some new markings. i think it came out really nice in the end, although i did basically make up the markings on the fly instead of keeping any of their old ones (but they were just a normal umbreon, so...)

i did, for some reason, go the lineless fur effect, especially around the mane, something that i spring for occassionally to give "puffball fuzzy" as the texture im going for. i basically did this on vibes too. this whole design was just kind of winging it to completely remake glare from the ground up with little to no reference to their old design really.

ARKEA: ohhh boy. arkeas previous design was as equally as uninspired as glares and i think got thrown out EVEN MORE than glares too. at least glare shares yellow in common in umbreon. you wouldnt guess what pokemon arkea was before if you didnt know already (its an eevee)

i threw everything out but the kitchen sink and decided to add the only BIG carnivore of the series - a komodo dragon! a total overhaul from the previous design, which is what i wanted, with colours and markings inspired by chinese water dragons to finally give them the unique look theyve deserved for YEARS. being the """villain""" figure (not really but thats spoilers), i wanted to make them all big and imposing to contrast on them kind of being a bit pathetic, as the guy whos going around kidnapping and abusing people because they want the rabbit to kill a guy for them and/or teach them how to kill that guy.

being rebuilt from the ground up meant that theres no major philosphy behind their redesign to the new one though - i literally just made a whole new character with 0 relation outside of name really. i picked green because they were the last one i coloured and green was the colour i didnt use at all for the rest of the cast, so i just rolled with it, and thats pretty much it.

Inside The Day of the Jackal, Eddie Redmayne and Lashana Lynch’s ambitious new hitman series

GQ speaks to the cast and crew behind Sky’s reimagination of the classic Frederick Forsyth assassin novel

1973’s The Day of the Jackal is one of those classic thrillers that dads pass down as a rite of passage. Failing that, you might’ve caught it on ITV 2 on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Edward Fox plays the titular Jackal, a killer for hire who is commissioned by the French militant far-right to assassinate president Charles de Gaulle in 1963. The film’s first act savours his scrupulous attention to detail: buying a bespoke rifle that can be broken down into innocent parts, and fake documents from a forger, for example, who he murders with his bare hands after an ill-judged extortion attempt. He’s a shapeshifting lone wolf — well, jackal — we learn little about, aside from how good he is at killing people.

Such a rich character whose mark is felt on no end of hitman movies (see David Fincher’s 2023 genre homage The Killer) is ripe for reinterpretation. Not that it went especially well last time: the last, loose attempt to contemporise The Day of the Jackal came in 1997, starring Bruce Willis and Richard Gere, and the critics called it a dud. But 27 years later, Sky & Peacock have armed up for their own present-day reimagination of the source material, thrusting the Jackal into our fraught world of political division and ever-present global danger. The script was written by Top Boy writer Ronan Bennett, and the series executive produced by Downton Abbey's Gareth Neame and Nigel Marchant, alongside its stars Eddie Redmayne and Lashana Lynch.

“We both loved the book, and we saw the film when we were kids — I’ve seen the film many times through my life, and always really respected it,” Neame, alongside Marchant, tells GQ. While they were at first cautious to tackle source material that carries with it such esteem, to expand the story across episodic TV seemed too good an opportunity to turn down. “It’s such an iconic, gripping story, that to revisit that in a contemporary context, with all the benefits of a multi-episodic show … we thought that would be really interesting to take this much-respected IP and develop it this way.”

Marchant concurs. “I think that [this] kind of title is in so many peoples’ consciousness … And then yeah, what’s the benefit of telling this with a bigger canvas?”

The most obvious difference about this version is that it takes place in the modern world. “If we’d stayed in the past, why do it? You can’t better the film,” Neame says. But in classic The Day of the Jackal style, Redmayne’s hitman still rocks up to more European cities than a gap year interrailer.

And so we begin the series with the Jackal in Munich. Not that we immediately recognise him: he is decked out in wrinkly prosthetics, fake hair, and wears contacts and fake teeth, disguised as an elderly German janitor. This is his way past security and into the campaign headquarters of a divisive far-right demagogue, for the purposes of a mission that we daren’t spoil further. Once he has done what he needed to do — ruthlessly dispatching half the staff with a silenced pistol en route — he makes a daring escape by absailing from the roof, just as the police arrive. So, to illustrate the vibe: think Mission Impossible meets Daniel Craig’s Bond, if he went really rogue.

It’s not a one-to-one adaptation, but fans of the original text and film needn’t worry — there’s a distinct air of reverence for them both throughout, and this version broadly covers the same plot beats, though the story is expanded for TV. As for the Jackal himself, Redmayne’s performance both evokes Fox’s classic turn and feels of his own making. “[Fox’s] performance will always be in my mind, because I loved it so much as a kid,” Redmayne tells GQ. “But at the same time, I wanted the audience to be able to oscillate between this sociopathic coldness, and a human being who wants a life, and happiness.” He points to Natalie Humphries’ costume design as an explicit example of homage. “She spoke specifically about the kind of dandy, slight peacock-y quality of the [original] movie, and how we wanted to keep those elements,” Redmayne says.

“If you know the original [film], you get these Easter eggs through the show — even some of the lines are exact matches, and scenes were shot literally shot-for-shot from the original,” Marchant says. “So there are treats along the way if you know it, which felt important to us [with] our love of the original as well.”

Some time after that first job, the familiar story begins, after a mysterious would-be client on the dark web offers the Jackal retirement-grade money for the biggest hit of his career. (Given the contemporary setting, the target obviously isn’t Charles de Gaulle, but that’s as much as we’re allowed to reveal.) And throughout the series, in another noticable departure from the source material, we delve into the Jackal’s backstory and the whys and wherefores of his chosen career path. (Again, I’d love to say more, but there’s a red laser dot hovering over my chest and I value my life.) Redmayne was initially cautious about digging too far into the Jackal’s background — traditionally, the whole point is that you know nothing about him — but was won over by the script.

“Edward Fox’s performance is so brilliant because it’s two and a half hours of [an] extraordinarily charismatic enigma,” Redmayne says. “So my challenge, as a fan of that, was to go, Wait, I only want to take this on if I feel like there is a way that unpacking [the backstory] doesn’t feel glib.”

The chance to explore the Jackal’s past, Neame says, was always the point. “We knew right from the beginning that we wouldn’t make a 10 part television series where the main character is only ever a ghost,” he says. “So that’s where the whole idea of the private life, the personal life — the fact that he’s trying to juggle this extraordinary professional world with a normal lifestyle [came from].” Later on in the series, Neame notes, another character tells him what should’ve probably been blindingly obvious: in this line of work, a healthy worThe Day of the Jackal isn’t just about the titular contract killer, of course. Much of the story unfolds as a thrilling cat and mouse, as hot on the Jackal’s heels is the Sherlock to his murderous Moriarty, French detective Claude Lebel, played in 1973 by Michel Lonsdale. In this new adaptation, the character is reimagined as a wily MI6 agent, Lashana Lynch’s Bianca, whose counter-terrorism training and firearms expertise make her the Jackal’s ideal foil. (Despite the connection you might make to one of Lynch’s more recent roles, this grounded, bureaucratic vision of His Majesty’s secret service bears little resemblance to Bond.)k/life balance just isn’t sustainable.

“When you have a character that is in either a powerful position, or works for a powerful organisation, there is this danger that happens whereby women get boxed into one of two things: either the strong one, or the damsel in some way. Both of them are actually unfair,” Lynch says. “The Bianca that I read in the first three episodes was someone who had a strength that was born from vulnerability, had confusion [around] her own identity and her meaning to her work … There was so much within her world, and within her being, that felt like a real person.”

Bianca is seen as an irritating disruptor by the people she works for; early in the first episode, her boss scribbles a mid-meeting note calling her a pain in the arse. But her unrelenting drive and commitment soon gets results. “She pushes people’s boundaries. She is annoying. She does not stop. And her boundary pushing gets very dangerous,” Lynch continues. “But [she is] also really well intentioned. She has a good heart, she just doesn’t know how to use it. Which is exciting to play, and exciting to watch.”

Ultimately, the Jackal and Bianca have more in common than they might initially realise. “The entire premise of these two protagonists that are deeply flawed human beings, and yet also compelling human beings who are kind of mirroring each other, and yet on a one way path to collision, I found that interesting,” Redmayne says.

“You’re on side with both of these people, despite the horrendous choices they’re making.”

The Day of the Jackal will premiere on Sky and streaming service NOW in the UK (and Peacock in the US) on 7 November.

The trail to the supervillain’s office is, to put it lightly, trashed.

Lampshades have been knocked off the walls. The wallpaper is torn. Scraps of the supervillain’s iconic black coat are scattered on the floor. The rug lining the corridor is mangled beyond repair.

The villain is standing outside the supervillain’s office door, staring at the claw marks as long as he is tearing through the wood. He’s been standing there several minutes, not too inclined to find whatever carnage is inevitably waiting on the other side. There’s a splatter of blood flicked on the door handle.

He pushes the door open as gently as he can muster, careful to not get any of the chaos on his hands. He can see the supervillain’s overturned chair from here.

His hand is inside his coat before he even gets the door open. The thing creaks dramatically on its hinges, making the villain cringe, and something inside knocks the desk over in alarm. Papers and the supervillain’s computer tumble to the floor. With a deep breath and the comforting shink! of his blade, he finally butts the door wide enough to get a full view inside.

What the fuck, is the first thing to come to mind.

There’s a fucking wolf in the supervillain’s office, scrambling for the open window with the elegance of a dying horse. It whines miserably as it fumbles on the windowsill. The thing has blood crusting around its lips, drawn back to unveil a row of teeth twisting into a cruel snarl.

The villain has not a clue what to do with this. The office is as much of a tip as the corridor outside; rugs and wallpapers shredded, furniture overturned, scratches decorating the rich wooden panels against the walls. He steps forward, blade brandished, and the wolf makes an expression that looks remarkably like a scowl.

The window isn’t big enough. It’s goddamn huge. It gives up with something akin to an irritated growl, hunching back down into the office with a defensive bristle. The villain inches ever closer, though he’s not sure what to do once he reaches it—would stabbing it work? It’d probably maul him before he even got a chance.

The wolf clearly thinks the same thing. It leaps at him, flaunting its giant teeth and claws, sinking its feet into the rug not even a metre away from the villain. He staggers back, unprepared. It sweeps its tail at him—the bundle of supposed fur is as solid as concrete, and it hits him with the force of such. The punch sends him tumbling, the tears of the carpet ruched into the villain’s back. His knife clatters to the floorboards loudly in surprise. The wolf is on him in a second, its paws digging into his shoulder so hard he thinks he might have a permanent paw print stamped into his skin.

Fucking hell, its teeth look even bigger from here. They’re practically as long as his arm. It snarls, oh-so-kindly spraying spittle into his face. Its breath wafts over his face, the stench of the rotting nightmares in its stomach turning his own. It doesn’t attack him, or bite his head off, or annihilate his shoulder with its claws (even though it kind of already is) like he was accepting the moment he hit the floor; it just stares, expectant, waiting, patient.

A moment of courage lets him glance up at the beast—it’s entire cruel demeanor is gone; it isn’t snarling as much as it is sticking its tongue out at him. Its whole body is shaking, and with a glance past the hunk of fluff keeping him on the floor he can see its tail wagging with enough force to make a hole in the wall.

Its paws are leaving crimson stains in his coat he knows he’ll never get out. The villain risks another look at its face—its eyes are bright, almost human, searching his eyes right back. Its gaze flits to the tatters of the supervillain’s coat before turning back to the villain, hopeful. Two and two suddenly make the grand number of four, and his eyes widen at the beast stooped over him with disbelieving horror.

“Wh– [Supervillain]?” the villain chokes out, and the beast wags his tail harder at the recognition. The villain is rewarded with a lick across the cheek that feels as repulsive as it smells. What the fuck, crosses the villain’s mind for the second time this evening. “What– how— what the fuck happened to you?”

The wolf—the supervillain, what on god’s green earth—growls indignantly at his language, as if that matters right now. “[Supervillain], my god, tell me what’s going on!”

The supervillain finally lifts the weight of the sun off the villain’s shoulder, and he gasps in relief like he couldn’t breathe. The other trots to the window overlooking the frankly absurd amount of land in his territory, huffing as he tilts his head out the window. He waits with a lot less patience than before as the villain slowly gets to his feet, more than happy to reclaim his beloved knife from the floor.

The evening is beautiful. A refreshing summer breeze ruffles the trees and sweeps the office in cool air. Stars speckle the darkened atmosphere, twinkling idly against their silken backdrop. Amongst them all, like the centrepiece to the night sky, is—

“A full moon?” the villain comments uncertainly, and the supervillain gives him a nudge of agreement. “Are you a fucking werewolf or some shit?”

Another growl of disapproval rips into the peace, but he gets another nudge all the same. He cannot believe this. Of all days to discover this—he was meant to be going home early today. “How long have you been a goddamn dog without anyone noticing?”

The villain gets a front row view of the supervillain’s bared teeth. Maybe insulting him when he’s practically made of weapons isn’t the way to go. He turns away regardless, pawing at a piece of paper on the floor—a piece of the calendar, the months torn from the binder. The one under his foot, decorated with colourful flowers that the supervillain would rather die than admit liking, reads ‘SEPTEMBER’.

“Five months?” He almost shouts in his dismay. “[Supervillain]!”

The supervillain makes a huffing noise vaguely resembling a laugh. “And… and you’ll be back to normal tomorrow?”

The supervillain nods. It looks unnatural on a wolf. “Thank god. I’m not buying you kibble.”

The supervillain snarls again, visibly disgusted at the thought, and the action pulls the villain’s gaze back to the blood sinking into the matted fur at his mouth. He grimaces blatantly.

“God, please don’t eat me over this.”

The villain comes across the supervillain in the hallway the next day. The slightly smug grin the villain wears only grows at the supervillain’s cold glare.

“If you tell anyone of last night,” the supervillain hisses, his voice threateningly low, “I will kill you in the most violent way possible. Understood?”

Can't kill him without telling everyone why. “Sure thing, paw patrol.”
