The way ppl online play up the mythos abt appalachia annoys the hell out of me. It's to the point where I've seen ppl extend it not only to the cultural + economic area we usually talk abt when we discuss "appalachia", but literally the entire mountain range as far north as Atlantic Canada. It's ridiculous.
#idk one time i saw a woman from ontario (bc of course she was) talk abt moving to the maritimes and how we had a bunch of ~creepy folklore~#especially abt not going into the woods at night#which we literally fucking dont btw#like she was just straight up lying pretending like shes personally experienced the way ppl mythologize abt appalachia#and this isnt to say that appalachia proper doesnt have folk traditions or superstitions. that would be stupid.#its people who are NOT FROM THERE taking it too literally and making up an image in their head abt how creepy appalachia is#which is like. first of all its just the woods. second of all people live there.#txt

Of all the very hard worldbuilding posts I foresee myself writing, the one labelled 'Influence Of Warp Travel On Maritime Shipping And Chokepoints' has got to be in the top 10%.
#Lotta articles tbh#In this cas what I mean is that although maritime chokepoints#Think the Straits of Malacca#Gibraltar Hormuz the Suez and Panama Canals etc#Have historically been *really important* parts of world geopolitical history#And so I'd like to at least allude to them in the 12 Worlds#But of course the presence of the Warp allows *all* of these to be bypassed#Now I'm mostly comfortable with how this applies to naval fleets and their movements#But giving some economical significance to them for merchants and the like#feels desirable#I have some plans to achieve that at least#Which mostly involve jacking up the price of Warp travel#Both to avoid the 'bypass' issue and the 'Warp Travel is so fast no one uses the actual ocean' issue

Actually before I go like. I’d seen the video of IVs scream in Rain and I just previously thought “oh how nice that adds a lot” but today in the car I thought. Wait? Is there? So I turned the volume up to 40 (I usually have it between 23-29 on the highway) and uh. 😳 That was the very first time I noticed Vessel’s scream in Rain.
I should perhaps listen more closely if headphones???
#I am Not entertaining thoughts of losing my hearing rn#bc I would be SALTY AF as I wear earplugs to all concerts#and work is the loudest bc oven and proofer and microwave beeps all the time#and the oven fans#and the Music and the customers and the coolers have fans and the freezer too and just. it’s so LOUD 😭#and they say ‘no hearing protection needed’#AND THE FUCKING BREAD SLICER TOO#rattle rattle motherFUCKER#though. I have been VERY scared of it (I did also work in fast food which is also LOUD) when I couldn’t hear an instructor hardly at all#from the middle of the room#I spent the two courses I took with him (he’s lovely) sitting right in front of him so I could hear I was. extremely distraught.#but anyway. since then I’m more likely to sit near the front of a classroom#Rain (sleep token)#shatters’ fragments#and also bc I’m super sensitive to sound#(that I hear)#I can’t discern very well on radio like at all like actual ass maritime radios#but like. when I listen in earbuds or headphones I’m almost always on the lowest volume#and sometimes it seems too loud 😔

tbf while the overuse of english phrases can be annoying in croatian this isn't necessarily something new - one only need look into the medieval and new age plays to see lingua franca (italian, latin, german, turkish ) seeping into the commoner language is just a thing that happens when you have a foreign language that's as widely used as the native one. we can be morose abt it but ultimately it's a natural aspect of language evolution. we wouldn't have a lot of dialectal vocabulary if it weren't for this kind of mixing.
That is fair, but i feel like there's a difference in not having a choice but to adopt and adapt, and very much having a choice and just kinda rolling over (hence the cuck comparison).
Like, we didn't have a word for a džezva so we borrowed it from Turkish - we don't have a word for "cringe" so go ahead and say "krindž".
I feel the problem comes when you speak Croatian, but 75% of your production is just fully English sentences, which happens. I've unfortunately been subjected to it way too much by now. It's not a case of "A postaj to na story, a ja ću screenshottat i forwardat Marti" <- you can say post, story, screenshot, forward in Croatian, but it's not the end of the world if you say them in English. The problem is when you say, "Super ti je ispala fotka, you should post it" <- conversations where entire clauses are spoken in English between two people whose first language is shared, and not English.
#not a historian so i can only say as much as i learn in linguistic courses#you use italian in maritime business because italian countries were the maritime baddies#so if you were in the business - you spoke italian#a lot of garments' names are borrowed from languages that they originated in#a lot of things that were brought by conquest were given names by the imperialists and taken by the conquered#a lot of the times people mixed and lived in the same areas and languages mixed#(like how it's just that Dalmatians use Venetian - Venetians also use some Croatian whether they know it or not)#no language is clean - God forbid you attempt to say ''pure'' for the ick you'll give me#but the problem is you're not saying memorija for phone storage you're saying memorija for your memories because you forget false friends#with how anglicised your very thought process has become. publika and public patetično and pathetic#and then we open the entire sentences in english#holds your shoulders. never speak to english majors. 80% of them are like that#but yknow. despite history croatian as a language lived on with borrowed words and with loanwords and with adopted wordd#but the youth. is not attempting to borrow cringe or adopt second-hand embarrassment because we don't have it#they are fully speaking in english#like us two rn - with the caveat that english is here used because we're essentially having an open discussion in an english-speaking space#asks

ive never understood the obsession with the titanic. how many disasters with more deaths than that have happened in the world and how little interest there is for them. is it even really worthy of all the media and curiosity that its had around it?
#he says as he just finished reading the 'sinking of the titanic' wikipedia page. i was just trying to understand the fascination ppl have#for it honestly. i still dont get it.#i even learned about it in school (in the US of course). it just doesnt make any fucking sense to me?#like MAYBE if they had mentioned that the sinking of the titanic caused maritime laws to change etc i would understand#but we didnt get taught abt the effects of it just the even in itself. which makes no sense to me#i keep thinking about the fascination that those rich fucks had w it and abt how much manpower is being deployed to try to save/locate them#meanwhile the mediterranean is a mass grave of subsaharan africans and nobody bats an eye#OF COURSE i know it all about racism and anglocentrism#but it seems ppl dont have a single shred of humanity common sense or compassion left in their bodies#maybe they never had it to begin with either#xarraire

So I figured that since Crash Course US History basically ends on a cliffhanger, I thought I'd start my own YouTube channel that's basically dedicated to history. It would be something of a continuation of the story, but also sheds new light on some details that might not have been gone over in Crash Course. I might also make some videos about maritime history and military history.
