I've been doing a bit of research, and it turns out in New York City you are required to have at least seven years of experience to become certified as a "master plumber." A minimum of two of these years need to be spent as a "journeyman plumber," where you're licensed to repair pipes so long as you're working under the supervision of a master plumber.
Mario and Luigi can't legally run their business if they're both journeyman plumbers, but that would mean (if they are really both 24-25 like Shigeru Miyamoto says) at least one of them began training to be a plumber the instant he got out of high school. But if that's the case, how did they end up working in demolition?
Tumblr media
My theory is that, since demolition companies sometimes locate and strip fixtures in commercial and residential properties for reuse or resale, plumbing fittings included, The Wrecking Crew hired the two plumbers-in-training to spot salvageable materials and take them apart. But if Foreman Spike happens to have a bone to pick and/or is on a power trip, I can easily imagine him adding hard labor on top of whatever plumbing-related jobs they were assigned until their schedule was filled with far more wrecking than plumbing.
Tumblr media
But eventually, Mario got all his hours logged, passed his master plumber exam, got his commercial activity license, and got him and his brother the heck out of there. Which brings me to an additional theory that Luigi is still a journeyman plumber and not yet a master plumber.
There's a few bits of Nintendo lore that describe Luigi as something of an "understudy," or otherwise not quite as experienced as his brother in the realm of plumbing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which makes sense given the way Luigi seems to take on the apprentice role, closely watching the way Mario works and carrying around all the tools.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think Luigi didn't immediately know what he wanted to do the moment he graduated high school the way Mario did. Maybe he dabbled in mechanics for a little bit before he ultimately decided to join his bro in his plumbing venture, but as a result he's a few years behind.

Ok but hot take but Bowser dosen't work as a serious villian.
In almost all media he's depicted as a sweet goofy dork who genuine cares for princess peach and would never hurt her. Hell he deeply cares for Mario and Luigi even if he is annoyed with them y'know? Like I thoroughly enjoyed the Mario movie, it's not amazing but a fun romp. But man I really hope that the second movie has him join the main cast against a new villian and tbh it's probably going to be Wario.
The only media where he does work as a really good villian is in early western media like the club Nintendo comics, the dic cartoons and the 1993 Mario movie bc they make him a cruel heartless monster. And honestly that dosent really feel like Bowser.
Bowser is an anti hero who's just a big ole simp for peach. Honestly I hope that future Mario games have Bowser as the 4th main playeble charecter alongside Mario, Luigi and Peach, and just do what Kirby does and introduce a threatening new villian every new game.

got an idea i can’t get out of my head.
there’s a dangerous enemy looking to destroy the entire universe, slowly taking out the surrounding kingdoms one at a time (like the void in spm). for specific reasons, mario and peach are sent out to go look look for a way to stop the threat, leaving luigi in charge of the mk.
mário and peach go mia and are presumed dead. this leaves the mk without an official leader. in my head mario and peach are married, making mario and luigi royalty through that association (it could work differently without needing the marriage idk, but it’s a magical universe só accuracy isn’t a big priority). the toads hastily crown luigi as their ruler as a way to keep some form of control during dire times.
as for the other kingdoms: their lands were destroyed and the monarchs and survivors have been seeking refuge in neighboring lands. the mk is the sole kingdom still standing, so they all go there. none of them had heard of mario and peach’s disappearance, and are very shocked to see luigi on that throne.
cue luigi proving to everyone that he can be an intelligent and competent leader (i believe this man is a damn good strategist) and gaining lots of respect. there could be a few battles, and while many of the other rules have seen him fight, he absolutely demolishes the enemies—he’s still very raw from losing two of the most important people in his life and he’s taking it out here.
there could also be a b-plot of a handful of rulers (bowser, daisy, peasley, king boo) lowkey vying for his hand. lots of shenanigans there.
then during the final battle mario and peach do return, emotional reunion, they save the world, everyone recovers. and ending on luigi throwing the crown back to peach because he simply was not made for ruling—though everyone would say otherwise.
This is a really good idea! And there's so much stuff to sink your teeth into.
If you want to write or draw this anon, I say go for it! This idea really feels like it has a lot of potential in my opinion 👍
And yes you are right: Luigi is the more rational minded of the Bros, so no doubt he can be a good strategist! My headcanon (mostly from watching the movie version) is that he's normally too shy and quiet to voice any leadership skills - but when times are desperate he pushes that to the side and is able to speak up.

I really think this mario movie thing raises an interesting point about celebrity voice actors because I’ll bet you crispy rat here doesn’t want to put on a voice because he’s afraid of being unrecognizable.
If he puts too much Brooklyn in his voice he’s not Chris Pratt anymore, he’s just some plumber from Brooklyn.

Gameverse Yoshi Vs. SuperShow Yoshi
So the canon of the games and the canon of The Super Mario Bros. SuperShow are obviously 2 separate canons. However, some people do think they fit into the same canon. So I wanted to point out all the ways the 2 differ, also cause it's fun talking about Mario lore.
This will begin various posts I will make about the differences between the SuperShow and the Games. So to start off I'll be addressing the main Yoshi.
The Main Yoshi's origin and behavior differs drastically in the SuperShowverse from the Gameverse. So in the Super Mario World cartoon Luigi finds a Yoshi egg and out of it hatches a Baby Yoshi which is the main Yoshi. While in the game Mario is the one who finds Yoshi not Luigi, and Yoshi is already full grown and was trapped in an egg cause of Bowser's curse. In addition the Main Yoshi hatched at the end of Yoshi's Island DS and the beginning of the Yoshi Story.
In the SuperShowVerse Baby Yoshi uses his tongue to eat "man-eating catepillars." In the Gameverse Baby Yoshis don't start off using their tongues.
SuperShowverse Yoshi when older talks and acts more childish, with Peach even calling him "just a baby." As stated before GameVerse Yoshi is fully grown.
The SuperShowverse also lacks the other Yoshis from Super Mario World aka Yoshi's other friends who Bowser also cursed. The main ones being Red, Yellow, and Light Blue.
Yoshi is also established to be afraid of water in the SuperShowverse while his Gameverse counterpart has no fear of water.

Fic notes for myself cause im gonna forget otherwise:
The movie showed that Mario and Luigi DID share a room (Luigi's bed is just in the corner against the wall whereas Mario's is in the center along the wall). I am ignoring that and making it one shared bed they take turns with
Mario is a big nicknamer especially for Luigi, (Supershow does it a lot but Spaghetti Head and Big Little Brother come to mind, the games have Weegie/Weege from the voice blips, and the movie adds Lu (my heart adds Louie as well))
Aside from the shared plumbing expertise, Mario has a hand in carpentry while Luigi has mechanics (I also think it'd be funny if Luigi had electrician certification cause you really shouldnt have a plumber without an electrician also like. Electricity powers)
Luigi will often make the dumbest excuses to get out of shit he doesnt wanna do (once again. Super show. Allergic to mountains? Gonna have a baby? He's very an "I need to iron my dog" kinda guy) Everybody is very Done With It but understand its easier to just let him get it out of his system first

is there a headcanon you think the most about?
I HAD THE FAINTEST IDEA I HAD FORGOTTEN ABOUT AN ASK AND IT WAS THIS ONE I AM SO SO SORRY DSGIHFKDH QAQ
Yes yes I have. a LOT of headcanons and ideas that I think about a *lot* (whether those be ha ha funnies or full on AUs the world will never know! dsgjknfdh) Read More again cause it got a little lengthy
A specific headcanon that influences a LOT of my choices for character interactions is the idea that the bros actually grew up in the castle with Peach qwq. Idk where I got the idea that their parents weren't in the picture as a kid but I am sticking to it I am so stubborn about this headcanon lmfao. I always liked the idea that Yoshi's Island happened, they were on Yoshi's Island for a bit, ended up being brought back to the Mushroom Kingdom, moved to New Donk, then came back to save Peach when Bowser attacked in Super Mario Bros. and decided maybe it'd be best to just. Live close to Toad Town so they're there if something happens again (which. it does.)
This was definitely my attempt to take the Mario Origin stories we have and tiddy them up into something that made sense? I know at some point I was even trying to incorporate the King of the Mushroom Kingdom from the old Supershow (I think???) comics???? I think he had heard about Kamek's vision of the Bros. defeating Bowser and set out to find them??? All that matters is the bros grow up with Peach and they are really close because of it dshgjknfdh.

I'm sick again, decided to relax with a rewatch of the Super Mario Bros movie. And it's a bit of a ride ecause the first half is like.
"Yeah... retro Nintendo fan service, Supershow references, ahh the Luigi's Mansion vibes, hey it's Yoshi, ah all those musical easter eggs, I fucking love being a fan of this franchise and I'm so happy we're eating so good, fuck yeah"
And then they get to the Jungle Kingdom and i'm like... ouch, my little Donkey Kong fanboy heart is so starved for content that the sight of Swanky Kong dying and Chunky Kong appearing without any dialogue sends me through the roof.
Whatever Nintendo is planning for DK besides the theme parks and the MVDK remake needs to fucking happen or i'm going to go feral.

I know we've all been talking about revisiting the Super Mario Brothers Supershow since the release of the movie, but as a Super Mario Brothers 3 cartoon enthusiast, I would like to give you all a compelling list of insane reasons you should go watch this on YouTube right this instant:
The opening theme kind of slaps.
A lot of people get turned into dogs for some reason???
Tumblr media
George Bush (Sr) ends up kidnapped by the Koopas and sent to the bottom of the ocean? Which, honestly, may have been the best outcome for 90s American politics.
Peach is into surfing and has an implied fling with some California stereotype surfer dude on Hawaii. Get it, Peach.
You want de-aging tropes? Baby Mario and Luigi? Get 'em here.
Tumblr media
Luigi is sent to seduce Wendy Koopa and succeeds. (This is Mario's plan, meaning Mario has utter faith in his brother's natural rizz). You have to watch this for Luigi's voice change, it's incredible.
Tumblr media
Speaking of seduction, Luigi is mistaken for a 1,000 year-old mummy's husband. Mario is mistaken for...their son.
Yes, the brothers get into a BLOWOUT fight and it's amazing. Mario ends up brainwashed by Ludwig's mind-control device and the brothers have a very brief altercation.
I don't what the deal is with the Mario franchise and brainwashing/possession/mind control, but in a separate episode, Luigi and Bowser fight over a mind-controlling music box.
Peach is apparently a big Milli Vanili fan (you have to love the 90s) and rope Mario and Luigi into going to a concert in the Real World. Look at these two DORKS compared to Peach, who is effortlessly fashionable. (Granted, Toad gave them bad intel, but I don't think either brother has been "cool" in his entire life).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
NERDS.
Mario ends up with a case of PTSD after almost drowning. I wish I was kidding, but this episode goes kind of hard if you think about it. (Not to mention the fish lady who is relentlessly pursuing him for marriage).
The Boys Do Venice.
Bowser takes a "Nice Guy Potion" in order to try to sabotage an election.
Three words: Zombie Trash Koopas
A family from Wichita end up in the the Darklands in their very typical station wagon. Hijinks ensue.
Some of the later episodes kind of turn into awkward Saturday afternoon specials with messages about gossip, racism, recycling, and worker's rights, which isn't exactly what one would expect from a Mario Brothers cartoon, but if you remember the 90s at all, this kind of tracks.
This being said, the episode where the Koopa kids go and try to take over the 7 continents relies on some unbelievably (awful) hilarious stereotypes (again, it was the 90s). But we do get to see Luigi on ice skates, which is a win.
Bowser kidnaps Luigi as bait. It works.
Tumblr media
I'm just going to leave you all with this final screenshot.

Young Mario, Young Luigi, and Inspector Palm redraw (across the years)
- - -
Context for those who don’t know: So I long time ago (when I was much younger and less experienced) I envisioned a scenario where Mario and Luigi grew up in the Mushroom Kingdom instead of Brooklyn, and the many adventures they would get into before their adult years. I created an OC they would interact off of; Chief Inspector Palm. “Inspector Palm is head of the Mushroom Kingdom Police Force, but ultimately acts a bit of a high boots. He's not a bad guy per say, he just doesn't trust that two children who are destined to become the famous heroes of the Mushroom World, can help him with his job. Thus he spends countless hours chasing them away; or ironically trying to catch them if they somehow (more than often) go against his wishes and try to "meddle in his affairs" anyway! Spoilers: he warms up to them eventually.”
(from my previous redraw in 2016)
As you can see, I had redrawn this before, but recently got nostalgic for this old idea from my past, so I decided to redraw it once again to see how far I’ve come!
I really do think that I’ve improved a lot 🙂 Although, looking back at the 2013 version, it doesn’t look as bad as how I thought it was back then 🤣😅
