Missing heroines: more lost superheroine tv and movies
Note: the first missing heroines post can be found here.
We assume that old television and movies never die, they just gather dust on an archive shelf somewhere. But that is far from the truth. Although some territories, such as the US, have a pretty good track record at preserving their history, other markets have a more spotty reputation. In some countries, once a local movie or tv show has had its initial run, its value is greatly decreased. Without a US-style syndication market that guarantees dozens of local tv channels eager for cheap filler for their daytime schedules, the temptation is not to incur the expense of storing and maintaining old content. As such it can simply vanish thanks to neglect... or even deliberate junking (yes, we’re looking at you BBC!)
Much historically important superhero content has been lost this way. Below are listed a few examples of movies and tv shows focusing on superheroines that are either thought to be lost entirely, or who’s existence is uncertain. Because of the large quantity of superhero content in the Philippines stretching as far back as the 1950s, the list is heavily biased towards that part of the world.
Sri Asih (Indonesia, 1954)
Tumblr media
Of all the media on this list, Sri Asih is perhaps historically the most interesting. The 1954 movie was based on the comic character created in 1953 by R. A. (Raden Ahmad) Kosasih. It starred Mimi Mariani as Nani, a young girl who stumbles onto a criminal plot while on a long train journey to visit her sick father. Unluckily for the desperadoes, Nani can transform herself into the magical goddess superheroine Sri Asih, allowing her to defeat the gang and save her fellow passengers from the grisly fate the gang has planned for them. After 1951′s Darna, the Sri Asih movie may be only the second superhero movie to centre on a female character (or third if you include 1929′s Red Heroine. )There appears to be no surviving footage, but a tiny number of grainy publicity photos exist thanks to an article in the magazine, Film Varia Vol. 1. Issue 6 (May 1954.)
Status: missing, presumed lost forever.
Wander Woman Si Ako (Philippines, 1980)
Tumblr media
Wander Woman Si Ako was a spoof movie, almost certainly inspired by the Lynda Carter Wonder Woman television show of that era, that starred beauty pageant queen and comedy actress Maria Teresa Carlson in the lead role. The title apparently roughly translates as “Wander Woman I Am”, based perhaps on Carlson’s catchphrase, “Si Ako, Si Ikaw” (I am you), in a popular sitcom she was starring in around that time. In the same year Carlson also starred in the Six Million Centavo Man, another spoof of an American tv show. The only material currently circulating about this movie is the poster / advert used to promote it.
Status: missing, but copies probably still in existence.
Zarda Super Filipina (Philippines, 1986)
Tumblr media
Zarda Super Filipina was a 1986 superheroine tv show that was paired in the schedules with another series that adapted a male ‘komiks’ hero called Kidlat. Isabel Rivas portrayed a young woman who is lame (much like Darna’s alter ego, Narda), but when trouble rears its ugly head stigmata appear on her hands and she is transformed into the superheroine, Zarda. Her adversaries were horror inspired or supernatural in nature, such as zombies. It isn’t known quite how many episodes there were, but it is thought to have had a decent run. There’s a single publicity photo available, based on a magazine advert for both the Kidlat and Zarda shows. Aside from this there’s little information online, and no footage or episodes or screen captures.
Status: missing, presumed wiped or junked.
Darna (Philippines, 1977)
Tumblr media
Fourteen year old Lorna Tolentino played both Darna and her alter ego Narda in this 1977 television adaptation of the highly popular ‘komik’ character, produced by Kitchie Benedicto-Paulino. The show is notable for being the first Darna produced for tv, and for featuring a one-piece costume rather than Darna’s usual bikini. Perhaps commissioned in response to the popularity of American imports like the Bionic Woman, stories included Darna defending a scientist when his own super-tough robot creation turns into a homicidal threat.
Reports of the show’s broadcast history are somewhat confusing. There appears to have been only two episodes, the first perhaps screened sometime in February 1977 on KBS 9, with Narda becoming Darna only briefly towards the end of the episode. Despite this opening episode ending with a preview of the next story, allegedly the first episode was repeated a week later. A second episode, guest starring Tina Artillaga, was then apparently (according to promo material) broadcast towards the end of August.
In terms of surviving materials, a handful of publicity photos are still available, but there appears to be no footage or surviving episodes to view anywhere. Some fans have therefore assumed that the show is lost to the mists of time, like so much other old television.
Status: missing, presumed wiped or junked.

Latinx singers of classical music: a list so incomplete as to be positively embarrassing
What I wrote in the previous post in this series applies here as well:
Some of these artists are up-and-comers; some of their careers were at their height in the 1970s, when I first began paying attention; a few go back further than that.
Although in this case it’s more than a few — which, along with the fact I kept finding more and more younger artists, is why I decided to end my research and post this now.
I’ve included many of the younger ones solely on the basis of reputation, without having heard them. Not all are or were A-listers, but they are all people who sing or sang Western classical music for a living, or taught others to do so, or a combination of the two.
Assembling this list has required me to consider some questions of inclusion. Do the children of European immigrants who, in some cases, didn’t even bother to give their children Latinate names belong here? Undoubtedly many people will say no; I disagree. (I have drawn the line, however, at Spanish or Portuguese artists who decamped to their countries’ former colonies.)

Roma
9 marzo 2019, centro Boncompagni 22, via Boncompagni 22, ore 20.30
10 marzo 2019, cinema Caravaggio, via Paisiello 24, ore 10
Siamo Capi scout,
Siamo antifascisti.

Italians Pay Last Respects to TV Diva Who Was ‘One of Us’
ROME — Some people stood quietly, some bowed, some made the sign of the cross. Others stretched their arms over a fragrant jungle of bouquets — mostly in yellow, her favorite color — so that they could caress the coffin. The floral tribute grew bigger by the hour as hundreds of fans endured Thursday’s blistering heat to pay their respects to Raffaella Carrà, the beloved television star who died on Monday.
“Everyone loved Raffaella,” said Leonora Mingaio, an educator, her voice breaking, shortly after visiting the vast ceremonial room in Rome’s City Hall where Ms. Carrà, 78, was lying in state, a ceremonial guard in attendance. “She deserves to be honored,” she said.
The outpouring of affection for Ms. Carrà after her death from what her family said was a long illness has few precedents in Italy.
“Italians spent so many years in her company, she was like a relative, someone you’re always pleased to see,” said Mirella Cappa, a civil servant who had come with a couple of friends to City Hall. She was a simple woman, added a colleague, Renata Calenda, “never a diva.”
Over a six-decade career, Ms. Carrà glued generations of Italians to their television screens, and her songs — she sold more than 60 million records — provided a soundtrack for their lives. She broke boundaries that commentators this week said had redefined Italian notions of public morality and challenged chauvinistic beliefs about the role of women in society.
In the early 1970s, while women were taking to the streets to protest their subordinate role in society and seeking the right of self-determination over their bodies and lives, Ms. Carrà was doing her bit for the revolution from a television studio that beamed onto the national broadcaster RAI.
She showed her bellybutton in 1970, a scandal at the time, opening a public debate about propriety on television. In 1971, she performed the song “Tuca Tuca,” teasingly singing “I like you,” as she touched her dance partner’s body, a bit quickly censored from TV. She never married but openly lived with her companions at a time when the Roman Catholic Church condemned such behavior.
She later revolutionized daytime television with a lunchtime program that broke records, and her variety shows included interviews with an assortment of celebrities and newsmakers like Mother Teresa and Henry Kissinger.
By Thursday, many hundreds of fans had come to pay their respect. Others had applauded along the streets on Wednesday, when a hearse with her coffin made its way from the singer’s home in an elegant apartment complex in Rome to City Hall, making stops in front of several RAI studios where Ms. Carrà had worked. The procession was broadcast live on RAI’s flagship station.
Her funeral, which is scheduled for Friday at one of Rome’s most storied churches, Santa Maria in Aracoeli, will also be broadcast live.
“When she died, it really touched me. She had been very close to the L.G.B.T. community,” said Christian Principessa, a hairdresser, explaining why he’d felt compelled to pay his respects. Ms. Carrà’s songs often referred to being free to love whomever one wanted (and the freedom to leave men who cheated). “She was close to us,” he said.
Ms. Carrà had also worked for many years on Spanish television and was beloved in the country as well as among Latin American audiences. Her death made front page headlines in many Spanish papers.
On Thursday, Ion de la Riva, cultural councilor of the Spanish Embassy in Italy, was among those who paid homage. Ms. Carrà and her boundless energy had been a splash of color during the gray days of the Franco regime, which she opposed, he said.
“It made a hell of a lot of difference to us, dancing to her songs,” Mr. de la Riva added. And she spurred other artists to follow suit “and be bolder and more forthcoming,” he said. “She showed people a way to be free of oppression.”
American audiences might best know her for her role in the 1965 World War II adventure film, Von Ryan’s Express, alongside Frank Sinatra.
In 1986, David Letterman introduced her on his show as the host of Italy’s “most popular show” someone who was “often called the Johnny Carson and Ed Sullivan of Italy.” She told Mr. Letterman that as a woman she preferred to be compared to Ann-Margret and Barbara Walters. “But I am only Raffaella Carrà,” she told him.
Her own shows drew big-name entertainers and over the years she sang duets with stars like Ginger Rogers, Sammy Davis Jr., Tom Jones, Joe Cocker and Donna Summer to name a few.
More recently, a 2011 remix of her 1976 song “A far l’amore comincia tu” by the French DJ Bob Sinclar put Ms. Carrà back on the charts. The song provided the soundtrack to a boisterous party scene in Paolo Sorrentino’s “The Great Beauty,” which won the Oscar for best foreign film in 2014.
“The music guided that scene, had she not given us the rights, the scene would have been something else,” said Mr. Sorrentino, who described the song as “fun-loving” and “able to transport people into a vortex of joy,” which was a characteristic of Ms. Carra’s music, he said. “It’s about being carefree — there’s a joyous and familiar sensuality,” he added.
Younger generations came to know and appreciate Ms. Carrà, who was a coach on the Italian version of the talent show “The Voice.” “We knew her through our parents, but then came to know her positivity, her laugh,” said Riccardo Cicciotti, a 20-year-old university student.
Ms. Carrà’s death surprised the nation. Visitors filled three memorial books outside the viewing room with heartfelt, heart-wrenching messages, mostly expressing gratitude for having been such a part of some many lives.
“I spent my entire life alongside you,” wrote one of them, Alex, “you’ll be forever in my heart.”
