I have come across some posts/comments saying that Jon Snow will stay as Jon Snow and will never become Jon Stark. Here's the thing though - Jon Snow IS already Jon Stark! He just doesn't know it yet.
As GRRM states:
Q: I have a question, since Robb actually  legitimized Jon and named him his heir for Winterfell and the North  before the Red Wedding (granted no one knows about this and is still  alive or free, the Greatjon knows as does Edmure, but I dont see them  getting out of the Twins any time soon and Catelyn would probably die  before telling anyone) does this make Jon’s rejection of Stannis’ offer  moot? A: Edmure and the Greatjon are prisoners, true… but you are forgetting  the envoys that Robb sent to Howland Reed… Galbart Glover, Maege  Mormont, Jason Mallister… they are all alive and free. As to what is and is not moot… the key point is, only a king can legitimize a bastard……
"Precedent," she said bitterly. "Yes, Aegon the Fourth legitimized all his bastards on his deathbed. And how much pain, grief, war, and murder grew from that? I know you trust Jon. But can you trust his sons? Or their sons? The Blackfyre pretenders troubled the Targaryens for five generations, until Barristan the Bold slew the last of them on the Stepstones. If you make Jon legitimate, there is no way to turn him bastard again. Should he wed and breed, any sons you may have by Jeyne will never be safe." - Catelyn, ASoS
Robb stood, and as quick as that, her fate was settled. He picked up a sheet of parchment. "One more matter. Lord Balon has left chaos in his wake, we hope. I would not do the same. Yet I have no son as yet, my brothers Bran and Rickon are dead, and my sister is wed to a Lannister. I've thought long and hard about who might follow me. I command you now as my true and loyal lords to fix your seals to this document as witnesses to my decision." A king indeed, Catelyn thought, defeated. She could only hope that the trap he'd planned for Moat Cailin worked as well as the one in which he'd just caught her. - Catelyn, ASoS
So it is done. King in the North Robb Stark has already legitimized Jon Snow as Jon Stark. Edmure Tully, GreatJon Umber, Maege Mormont, Galbart Glover and Jason Mallister all now know that Jon Snow is Jon Stark.
They just have not managed to either get word to him (Edmure and the GreatJon being prisoners) or for reasons unknown - most probably because of the Boltons squatting in Winterfell with Northmen as Lannister hostages and Stannis engaged in a campaign in the North - have just not informed Jon about this.
This right here is strong foreshadowing for Jon Stark as King in the North through Robb's Will:
Stannis read from the letter. "Bear Island knows no king but the King in the North, whose name is STARK. A girl of ten, you say, and she presumes to scold her lawful king." - Jon I, ADwD
At this point it's clearly implied that Lyanna Mormont has heard from her mother. Maege Mormont - who is witness to Robb's last will and decree which names Jon Stark as KITN - is last seen heading to the Neck with her daughters.
Catelyn wondered if Lady Maege had reached the Neck as yet. She had taken her other daughters with her, but as one of Robb’s battle companions Dacey had chosen to remain by his side. - Catelyn, ACoK
In ADwD, Alysane mentions that two of her sisters are with their mother. Which makes it clear that she has heard from Maege.
"Sisters," Alysane Mormont replied, gruff as ever. "Five, we were. All girls. Lyanna is back on Bear Island. Lyra and Jory are with our mother. Dacey was murdered." "The Red Wedding." - The King's Prize, ADwD
Which then implies that Lyanna Mormont has heard from her mother and her declaration is for Jon Stark.
Now of course they could be talking about Rickon Stark, if Maege and Galbart Glover managed to communicate with Robett Glover and Manderly has let them know that Rickon is still alive. However, keeping in mind that Galbart Glover was also witness to King Robb's last decree which legitimizes Jon Snow as Jon Stark, it's very possible this is about Jon Stark as well.
The next paragraph just hits us over the head with foreshadowing that more or less confirms that this is about Jon Stark.
Maege Mormont had ridden south with Robb, Jon knew. Her eldest daughter had joined the Young Wolf's host as well. Even if both of them had died, however, Lady Maege had other daughters, some with children of their own. Had they gone with Robb as well? Surely Lady Maege would have left at least one of the older girls behind as castellan. He did not understand why Lyanna should be writing Stannis, and could not help but wonder if the girl's answer might have been different if the letter had been sealed with a direwolf instead of a crowned stag, and signed by Jon Stark, Lord of Winterfell. It is too late for such misgivings. You made your choice. - Jon I, ADwD
Yes Jon, the answer would have been different because Lyanna straight out just declared for YOU! He just doesn't know it yet.
Jon took a knee. The king frowned at him, and rattled the parchment angrily. Rise. Tell me, who is Lyanna Mormont? One of Lady Maeges daughters, Sire. The youngest. She was named for my lord fathers sister.
The fact that it's LYANNA Mormont making this declaration - which GRRM reminds us of in the same discussion when Jon tells Stannis that she is named after his father's sister - just sweetens the whole deal!

Maege Mormont, Lady of Bear Island, The She-Bear
"The King in Winter!"
A revisit to a mini I originally painted back in the Hand of the King set. I like the more aggressive, standoffish pose here, befits her reputation as a stubborn ol' snark. Doing wrinkles on old faces is good practice.

Ye Olde Magick AU Part II: More Houses
As always: thank @books-n-guns for the existence of this AU :D Basic lore (and the first bunch of houses): X Without further ado, have some more houses~!
The Arryns: Wings, wings, wings. They have the most beautiful feathered wings you'll ever lay eyes on and back muscles because damn their wings are heavy. They need special oils and soaps, and are almost constantly grooming. And they have echo voices (X). If the song Hallelujah existed in ASOIAF they would own it. The skies of the Vale always has at least one Arryn or one of it's cadet houses The Boltons: Like books-n-guns says, they're vampires with an interest in blood magic. Legend says the Boltons actually used to be able to shed their whole skin—and I mean their whole skin—until one Bolton got into blood magic and suddenly vampires. The northern weather is perfect for them. The Mormonts: Werebears! Werebears! Werebears! You think Bear Island was named after the bears that inhabit it? No. It's the werebears of House Mormont. Were as wild looking as the Starks of old just bear themed; claws and teeth and fangs and thicker hair, and were generally bigger and stronger. Now they're just strong. Lady Maege Mormont can still crush a man's head between her hands.
The Tarths: Giants. For some reason the magic has been absent from their bloodline for a few years until Brienne was born. While not as big as her ancestors, Brienne is still big and has great strength. She didn't defeat those who had a bet on her maidenhead so much as she sent them flying. People held score cards. Loras was sweating in his armour and allowed Brienne to grapple him instead shut up you drunken archer of my family I allowed it because I didn't want to fucking die. The Hightowers: Flame hair. Think Hades from Hercules. It's safe to the touch and doesn't set anything on fire...unless the Hightower it's attached to wants it. Just like when they turn the beacon's fire green to call their bannerman, a Hightower's hair can turn green at will. Please imagine Alicent entering the room not only in her green dress, but with flickering green flame hair. The Baelishs: Fiery eyes. Look up Lucifer Morningstar red eyes and you get what I'm imagining, though the pupils are a glowing flame coloured. It's hard to look like a friendly and powerless man to be underestimated by all the high lords with these eyes, but Littlefinger manages it. The Greyjoys: Krackens. Honestly I'm just imagining a kracken version of Davey Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean. But they can only get that form when wet with seawater. Can remain in that form so long as a part of their body is still in seawater. Rare times does it skip a member of the family, so sorry Aeron. The Karstarks: Since they are a cadet branch of the Starks they also benefitted from the same wolf magic—however instead of fangs they've got the claws. Sharp and deadly, the Karstarks are best at being frontline fighters where even if they lose their swords they can still maul a bitch. No, seriously, they will maul someone with their claws. They have mauled people with their claws. Rumors say they use grindstones to keep their claws nice and sharp. The Freys: Trolls, specifically bridge trolls. And not the dependable kind that they used to be back in the day. Still having that weasel look to them, they have granite skin that makes normal swords break against them and above-human strength, thus still making them the most powerful bannermen of House Tully. The Reeds: Lizard-lions or frogs. Actually, nobody really knows what the Reeds are—not now or back in the past. Not even Ned knows what Howland Reed looked like because he kept his entire person covered from the top of his head to his hands to his feet. The only thing he saw was a super long tongue jab hard at Arthur's neck that killed the knight and save him. And that's what I've got for now. Again ideas of other houses are welcome!

Characters who deserved better than what game of thrones gave them:
The Jeynes, Arianne and Alys Karstark: Jeyne Poole, Arianne and Alys are just non-existent (which might be a blessing in disguise actually considering what they did to the girls who were actually in the show) and Jeyne Westerling is replaced by a character who makes no sense whatsoever and doesn't work with Robb's actual character arc.
The Mormont women (not sure if I should include Lyanna in this because we don't know her in the books so far): they were just so cool. They deserve better than a cameo in season 1. Where is that moment when they tell Cat she would have done the same thing when she freed Jaime ?
Doreah and SmallJon Umber. Fuck D&D for what they did to them, They are dead in the books and they died at the Red Wedding for Robb and with Dany. They were extremely loyal to their respective leader, they didn't deserve to be made traitors for some reason and to die at the hand of said leaders (or their family). I will forever be furious about it.

Howland Reed, standing on a lily pad: i agree

Howland: long enough to be awkward

Howland: last time i left my castle i killed the greatest warrior of my generation
Howland: i don't go out anymore
Howland: how's Ned? And Robert? And Jon Arryn?
Maege: uhh sit down buddy

House Mormont's political allegiances in ADWD
Question that came up in earlier blogposts and comments of mine: Where does House Mormont's political allegiances lie? We have a few bits of evidence:
The first on-page appearance of the House politicians (rather than its exiles and Night's Watch members) is in Bran VI AGOT, where Maege Mormont challenges Robb's authority. After that moment though, the Mormonts are on Robb's side and I don't recall any dissension.
Lyanna's reply to Stannis Baratheon : "Bear Island knows no king but the King in the North, whose name isSTARK." Jon Snow wonders why a 10-year old girl who is not the heir to Bear Island is writing back.
The current boss of House Mormont is still Maege Mormont as of ADWD. Her oldest child Dacey was murdered at the Red Wedding, but she has other daughters and grandchildren. As of ADWD Alysane is the heir, while Lyanna is last in the succession.
In (I think) Catelyn V ASOS Robb made Maege one of the witnesses of his will (but without giving her a physical copy, most likely) and dispatched her to Greywater Watch with Galbart Glover to Howland Reed. The will almost certainly legitimizes Jon Snow, thus making him his heir, but Howland Reed knows that Jon isn't Ned's son.
We don't see Maege Mormont in action in ADWD, but from Alysane's words about her family to Asha ("The King's Prize") it seems like Alysane and Maege are in correspondence.
Alysane Mormont joins in as Stannis liberates Deepwood Motte, a perfectly timed synchronized attack that is probably not a happy coincidence.
There, Alysane joins Stannis' army with an unknown amount of troops. She is one of the "wolves" who strong-arm Stannis into marching on Winterfell. We don't know on which terms Stannis agreed to this operation.
In Theon's TWOW chapter, Stannis intends to send "Arya Stark" (actually, Jeyne Poole) to Jon Snow and Alysane is supposed to accompany her.
It is not entirely clear from this all what House Mormont's political allegiances are, other than being anti-Ironborn.
My minimal theory is that they are definitively going to support a Stark restoration, but are keeping their options open regarding Stannis because they don't know whether Jon Snow will actually agree to fulfill Robb's will. They don't let anyone, not even a Stark, and certainly not some Southron king sending letters, boss them around. Their support must be earned - by Robb during that conference, by Stannis by liberating Deepwood Motte or Winterfell.
Or not in Stannis' case, since the house has only committed Alysane from what we can see and hasn't bent the knee. I am not sure whether Alysane brought a lot of troops when she joined Stannis' army.
One thing that is certain is that Maege Mormont knows about Robb's will, but has taken no concrete steps to inform or persuade Jon Snow to implement it so far. I think it's because she doesn't think he'll play ball - if she only had her and Galbart Glover's word, Jon might very well refuse. And he's become LC of the Watch in the meantime. We don't know if the Mormonts know of Jon's participation in Stannis' war council in Jon IV ADWD, but it also speaks of Jon staying with the Watch. And that leaves Stannis Baratheon the only game in town if you don't like the Ironborn or Freys/Boltons...
...but there is room for the Mormonts to back a KitN if other witnesses to Robb's will return or Jon Snow becomes more amenable after resurrection.

A Game of Thrones, Tyrion III
“You might send young Snow. He would be glad for a chance to see his brothers.”
Mormont frowned through his thick grey beard. “Snow? Oh, the Stark bastard.
“I think not. The young ones need to forget the lives they left behind them, the brothers and mothers and all that. A visit home would only stir up feelings best left alone.
“I know these things. My own blood kin…my sister Maege rules Bear Island now, since my son’s dishonor. I have nieces I have never seen.” He took a swallow.
“Besides, Jon Snow is only a boy.”

A Stark She Remains [17/?]
Fandom: ASoIaF Characters: Robb, Catelyn Stark, Brynden Tully, Lady Maege Mormont, Lord Grover and Lord Cerwyn. Warnings: None Note: Consider a reblog
On AO3
Robb glares at the messenger.
He shouldn't, but he cannot help it. He is angry, his people are complaining and his mother is anxious with worry. "What do you mean Cersei Lannister is dead?"
The man squirms, whether it is because of the glare or by the very large Direwolf who is also doing the best approximation of a glare. "A message arrived to Riverrun, your Grace. Lord Tyrion is regent for King Tommen."
It would not be Kingly to scowl at the poor sod who his uncle decided to send with the message, nor glare him anymore, he is sure the man will cry if he continues.
"I see," he says. He does not, in fact, see. "Lord Tyrion will receive my men and my Lady mother, good to know. Dismissed."
The man flees.
He turns towards his grand-uncle, his mother, Lady Mormont, Lord Glover and Cerwyn. "What do we make of this news?"
"That either the Gods are angry and on your side," Bryden Tully is the first to speak. "Or that someone is doing us all a favor and getting rid of Lannisters without bloodshed."
"I am concerned for your sisters," his mother says. "But you know that. However, I will not deny that I feel more at ease knowing Cersei Lannister is dead."
Everyone turns to look at his mother. Instead of apologizing, she lifts her chin and there is a glint of something in her eyes. "Can you tell me that my daughter would have been safe if Cersei Lannister had not died? No, you cannot. For Cersei Lannister would have done anything in her power to deny us your sister. Girls may not be as important as sons to some of you," she glares. "But they are to me. I want my daughters back."
Lady Maege nods at her words, he is not surprised. If anything, Lady Mormont would understand his mother. The men, save his grand uncle squirm and look away.
His mother sighs. "I will not take part in the negotiations, I am aware. But I just want my daughter back. I want to see her, see if she hale and whole. Surely, that is and should be, a mother's prerogative. Only Sansa can tell us anything about Arya, with the truth, anyway."
"My niece speaks truly, the girls should come home. They need to heal." Bryden capitulates.
He nods slowly. "And what about Stannis's message?"
"If he is right, he is the King." Lord Cerwyn speaks. "But, how to prove it?"
"Aye, those accusations can be done by a jealous and graspin man." Lord Grover adds. "Unless Cersei Lannister and Jaime Lannister left something in writing, Stannis's words are wind."
"While Stannis does not strike me as one who would speak thusly without base," Brynden's words come slowly. "We cannot dismiss the fact that now even Renly has declared himself a King, house Lannister is in shambles, why shouldn't the Baratheons attempt to sit on that ugly chair?"
Silence.
He can feel his shoulders tense at the thought of having to fight both Stannis and Renly. He shakes his head, his mother is right, his sisters first.
