Marry My Dead Body
Tumblr media
Movies watched in 2023
Marry My Dead Body (2023, Taiwan)
Director: Cheng Wei Hao
Writer: Cheng Wei Hao & Sharon Wu (based on a story by Lai Chih Liang
Mini-review:
I had so much fun watching this! I feel like the movie's tonal shifts and mixtures might be a bit too jarring for some people, but they worked perfectly for me. Most of the comedy lands pretty well, and the dramatic moments strike a nerve. There are even some effective jump-scares here and there! But the thing that takes the film to the next level is the acting. Greg Hsu and Austin Lin deliver flawless performances that really draw you in. People expecting a full-on gay romance will be disappointed, cause that's not what the story is about at all, but the chemistry between these two actors is fantastic and energetic. The directing is also dynamic and keeps you on the edge of your seat. That being said, the movie is not perfect. It tends to represent gay people in a way that feels somewhat stereotypical, and I think it could have delved much more into the social issues it addresses. I know the film has the best of intentions, but yeah, it could still be better in that regard. Anyway, Marry My Dead Body is a very fun experience, filled with humor, drama, action and great performances.

Boys Planet Episode 8 Recap and Guide, Part 2
Tumblr media
Ok, welcome back to Boys Planet Recaps! In the previous post, I covered the reveals of trainees ranked 27 through 12. This post will cover 1-11, as well as chair 28. Let’s go!
So, let’s look over the full list of trainees whose names have not yet been called.
Trainee Recap
For each trainee, I’ll list their rank at the first elimination in episode 5, as well as their rank mentioned at the end of ep 6, and the songs they did for the two previous missions.
Name                      rank-5/ rank-6             Previous Songs
Sung Hanbin               1/1                        Love Me Right / Tomboy Han Yu Jin                   4 /2                            Back Door / Law Seok Matthew            2 / 3                           Kill This Love /Love Killa Zhang Hao                   5 /4                           Kill This Love / Tomboy Kim Ji Woong              3 / 5                          Backdoor /Love Killa Kim Gyu Vin               6 / 6                           Love Me Right /Love Killa Kim Tae Rae                 11 /7                           Backdoor   / Man in Love Keita                              8 / 8                           Kill This Love /Zoom Hui                                 7 /10                           Love Me Right / Tomboy Park Gunwook            10/11                           Kill This Love / Tomboy Kum Jun Hyeon     14/12                           Back Door / Ggang Cai Jin Xin                   50 /25                        Hot Sauce /Feel Special  Hiroto                           21 /27                          Very Nice / Rush Hour  Ma Jing Xiang            32/28                          Very Nice / Rush Hour Mun Jung Hyun         23 /30                         Very Nice / Ggang Anthonny                     19/31                           Love Me Right / Limousine Jung Min Gyu             27/32                          Very Nice / Man in Love Brian                            41/ 33                           Back Door / Butterfly Chen Jian Yu              45 / 35                         Back Door / Ggang Lim Jun Seo               30 / 36                         Danger / Butterfly Dang Hong Hai          33 / 37                          Love Me Right / Home Lee Ye Dam                 42 / 38                          Love Me Right / Law  Park Ji Hoo                  44/39                           Hot Sauce / Limousine Cong                             35 / 40                          Very Nice / Butterfly Ji Yun Seo                    47 / 41                           Back Door /Home  Wumuti                         43/42                           Love Me Right / Zoom  Bak Do Ha                    24/43                           Hot Sauce / Not Spring…  Oh Sung Min               34/44                           Love Me Right/ Rush Hour Krystian                        37/45                            Back Door  / Limousine Lee Da Eul                   13/46                             Danger  / Not Spring… Lee Dong Yeol             40/47                           Very Nice / Man in Love Park Hyunbeen           49/48                            Hot Sauce / Zoom Jung I Chan                 52/49                            Danger  / Not Spring Choi Woo Jin               51/50                             Hot Sauce / Man in Love Lee Dong Gun             48 / 51                           Hot Sauce /Feel Special
So, I’ll give you a moment to decide for yourself who you think the top 11 most reasonably are.
Yeah, that’s what I think, too.
It’s pretty obvious that the top 11 are, in some order: Han Yu Jin, Hui, Keita, Kim Gyu Vin, Kim Ji Woong, Kim Tae Rae, Kum Jun Hyeon, Park Gunwook, Seok Matthew, Sung Hanbin, and Zhang Hao.
And I’d say any of the following are conceivable for chair 28: Anthonny, Brian, Cai Jin Xin, Hiroto, Jung Min Gyu, Ma Jing Xiang, or Mun Jung Hyun.
So the only real suspense here is which person will survive in 28th position, because we already know that the top 11 all survive. MNET VASTLY overestimates how fascinating I will find the ranking within the top 11, and tends to drag it out. Am I alone on this? Does anyone else feel like, well, they survived, and the ranking can and will change, so who gives a rat's butt as to who came in first versus second or third?
Anyway, let's get to the ranking!
At 2:14:10 the trainees are settling in to this phase of the eliminations. My little cousin Kum Jun Hyeon tells little muffin Mun that he’s nervous, and Mun tells Kum that he [Kum] is a candidate for top 9.
Just then, we’re told that the candidates for 9th place -- in other words, those in spots 9, 10, and 11 -- are General Gunwook, Hui, and yes, my little cousin Kum Jun Hyeon.
Tumblr media
Gunwook was expecting this in a good way; Hui was expecting this in a bad way; and Kum Jun Hyeon didn’t even know he could hope for this.
Everyone is shocked that Hui could have dropped so far, but he just nods kind of resignedly. As he said earlier in this episode, even he wouldn’t vote for an idol in his 30s, after all.
So who is 11th place?
At 2:16:15, Huta announces that it’s Hui.
Tumblr media
For a moment, there’s just silence.
Low key saw this coming from the start. For one thing, because Hui is great at everything he does, there’s very little vulnerability there, so it’s hard to feel that affection for him that I feel for some of the other trainees, even the ones I wouldn’t vote for, like Takuto or Bak Doha. For another thing, Hui is already a debuted idol. A lot of people would say that he had his shot.
There is also the Pentagon Paradox.
Consider: Everyone in the world is either a Pentagon fan, or not a Pentagon fan. I'm not talking about antis, I'm just talking about people who aren't specifically big fans of Pentagon. If you are a fan, like I am, then of course you’d want to support Hui in general in his endeavors. I wanted Hui to survive and do well on the show because I didn't want him humiliated or made miserable. But now that we're coming to the home stretch, my feelings are changing. As a Pentagon fan, I want Pentagon to be out there doing stuff -- as I imagine a lot of other Universe do. So I -- and I think other Universe -- actively want Hui to NOT be in Bepler. Meanwhile, think about those who are not Pentagon fans. They probably wouldn’t support Hui in the first place, unless they just happen to really like him on the show. So, neither Pentagon fans/Universe nor Pentagon non-fans are likely to want Hui in the top 9, so... who will be voting for him, exactly?
And that is the Pentagon Paradox.
Huta asks Hui to say a few words, and he says: “As I joined Boys Planet, I could feel what it means to enjoy the stage after a long time. Since I was able to perform with very talented chingoos, I was so honored. It’ll be a performance that I’ll remember forever.” Then he makes a big heart with his arms, as his lips smile but the rest of his face doesn’t.
(Chingoo means “someone the same age as you”/”friend” but can also be roughly translated to “guys” -- you’ll often hear the judges call the trainees “chingoo”.)
Tumblr media
I mean, it was pretty classy of him to focus on how much he enjoyed performing with the guys, but why not thank the Star Creators who voted for him as well? That seems mandatory, to me anyway.
Now it’s time to find out who came in 9th and who came in 10th between Jun Hyeon and Gunwook. We find out that apparently the two of them have been friends since the start -- I wonder how many other friendships we have no clue about? They’re both in the same Artist Battle song -- En Garde -- and are apparently currently roommates.
Tumblr media
They’re also sort of friendly rivals.
We see that they’re both trying to cast a spell to be chosen ninth -- well, you gotta do something with your brain while you stand there endlessly waiting for the producers to let Huta announce 9th place. After like full on 5 minutes of dicking around, at 2:19:27 we find out that Gunwook is in 9th place. Kum jokes that he’s not going to say congratulations, but you can tell he doesn’t mean that too seriously.
Gunwook says: “I couldn’t get rid of the 10th place tag. I felt the wall of Top 9 was too high for me. I was able to grow after meeting Team Tomboy. Thank you.” Also no thanks to the Star Creators? I don’t know, feels wrong to me.
Then my little cousin says: “I thought that I should not regret whatever rank I got. I don’t have any regrets because my ranking has risen much more than I thought. I was able to improve from my Ggang performance, so I’m thankful to my team members.” Then he pauses, and says with a slightly thicker throat, “The last chingoo from my agency, Woo Jin, is here” -- and he gestures to Woojin, who was ranked 50th in the 6th episode and who was in Man in Love. We can see that, for one of the first times in Jun Hyeon’s whole life, his eyes have tears in them.
Tumblr media
Somehow, that gets to me more than it does to see someone who is always openly emotional.  “I… I hope I get good results and I can be a hyung who Woo Jin can be proud of,” he says. Then, gathering himself together, he shouts, “Woojin, I love you!”
Tumblr media
Honestly, that’s why I watch this show. FRIENDSHIP! Fuck yeah!
I just noticed that we didn’t see Park Gunwook say anything to Park Hyunbeen, the last survivor from his Jellyfish team. Well, maybe it was edited out.
The trainees take their spots, and the rest of team Tomboy is happy to see Gunwook take a seat on one of the comfy chairs. But Gunwook doesn’t look super happy.
Tumblr media
Next is 8th place, and Wumuti says to Keita, “I hope you don’t get called.” It’s so weird how for the first two hours, the trainees were both hoping to be called, and now they’re all hoping not to be called.
Our clue is that whoever it is, he placed first in his team. Well, that means it’s Zhang Hao, Kim Gyuvin, Kim TaeRae, or Keita. It’s also someone who has had a killing part, which means it’s either Keita or TaeRae.
At 2:23:12, we find out it’s Keita. TaeRae’s teammates from Man in Love are like, “wow, how far are you going to go?”
Huta says, as Keita takes the stage, “Trainee Keita, the master of the stage, showed perfect rap that’s close to a perfect god through Zoom performance and secured his top 9 place.”
Tumblr media
Keita says, “Thank you so much to Star Creators for letting me sit in the Rank 8 seat again. I’ll prove why I have to stay in the Top 9.” His former teammates are happy for him, as is Park Gunwook, who leans over to shake his hand with a look of real happiness on his face. (I couldn’t find a still of when they were both in focus, so enjoy my delightful non-photoshop job here.) Aww, Gunwook has the cutest puppy face smile sometimes, I swear. I think he could pull of cute concepts really well.
Tumblr media
Next, is the trainee in 7th place. It’s someone in the K-group, so it’s not Hao or Matthew. We don’t wait too long to find out, at 2:24:40, that it’s Kim TaeRae 💖.  Naturally, he would have wanted to go even higher, but 7th place is already plenty good enough.
Kim TaeRae appreciation photoset:
Tumblr media
Then we get to listen to his nice speaking voice as he says, “I’m truly thankful to Star Creators for giving me a great ranking of 7th place. I’ll return the favor with better songs and more confident performances. Thank you.” But as he settles down in the squishy 7th place chair, it’s clear that he’s a bit anxious and uncomfortable.
Just for fun, I’m going to measure the time between when they show the rank number on the jumbo tron and when they finally reveal who has that position.
Now it’s time for 6th place. Will it be Han Yu Jin, Kim Gyu Vin, Kim Ji Woong, Seok Matthew, Sung Hanbin, or Zhang Hao? The stakes have never been lower!
We get the clue that the person in 6th got the benefit from the Dual Position Battle, which means it’s literally any of them, because they were all on either Law, Love Killa, or Tomboy.
Then Huta says something that Viki translates as, “He has a unique face and is praised for his good looking.” So again, it’s all of them!
At 2:26:47, after 80 seconds, we find out it’s Kim Gyuvin. He’s a little sad, because he wanted to go even higher, but he did get more than 5 million points.
Huta, reading directly from a cue card, asks him if he only did Love Killa for several years. Sigh, ok, fine, I guess this is a runner. Then Huta says something that Viki translates as, “Please tell us any memorable remarks on survival,” which I think is hilarious.
Gyuvin says, “Thank you for making me win first place in Love Killa. Seo Won, Matthew, and Ji Woong, thank you.” Then he adds in slow, but well-pronounced English, “And thank you for all the support and love. Whatever happens to me, I’m always able to stand strong because of you. Thank you, and I love you.”
When Gyuvin switches to English, Kim JiWoong asks Matthew if Gyubin is doing a good job, and Matthew confirms that he is. “Why didn’t you smile when I speak English?” JiWoong asks, and Matthew says, “Gyuvin is speaking well.” They seem to have a cute report.
Side note: I watched some dumb Youtube video in which someone ranted about their Boys Planet opinions. I say it was dumb because while I don't mind someone disagreeing with me on who they like or dislike, I do mind someone saying something like “Gyuvin needs to get out of Top9 right now,” while refusing to even explain why. And a bunch of people in the comments agreed, but no one had any substantive reason why. What on earth did Gyuvin do to you, people? He’s been a great performer since the Star Level Test. He’s the only one on Love Killa who managed to fucking SMILE the entire performance. He seems like a sweet kid with a nice face and great performance skills whose confidence has really been shaken by these psychopath judges. You can like other trainees better, but it’s weird to just hate Gyuvin. It’s like, these people just hate him because he gets in the way of their ships, or something. Ick.
Next will be the fifth place trainee. Will it be Han Yu Jin, Kim Ji Woong, Seok Matthew, Sung Hanbin, or Zhang Hao? And why does MNET think I care all that much of the specific order amongst these five? If I weren’t recapping this, I’d just skip ahead.
Zhang Hao is getting nervous, so Hanbin takes his hand. That faint noise you just heard in the distance is a shipper squealing. Maybe it was a noise that you made. I don’t know your life.
Huta says that the trainee in 5th place is unexpected. Hey, Huta, you said that about 20th place, and the person turned out the be the person who was in 21st place previously, so I don't trust that comment at all. Then we learn that it’s someone whose ranking has fallen since the first ranking announcement, so it’s it’s not Zhang Hao, who was 5th place before already. It’s also someone who didn’t do the Vocal and Rap position in the Dual Position Battle, so it’s not Hanbin.
Which of these three is it?
Tumblr media
I am on the edge of my seat!
Wait, hang on, let me sit back -- I have plenty of room. That’s better.*
At 2:29:35, after 80 seconds of waiting, we find out it’s Kim Ji Woong, who has dropped a bit in the ranking.
People are surprised that his ranking fell, but I’m not really that surprised. Kim JiWoong was sort of subdued and depressed seeming through most of episodes 6-7. There seemed to be some sort of heavy dark cloud hanging over his whole team, and while I think that this cloud may have condensed from evaporating drops of Matthew's flop sweat, the net outcome was a sad sad sad JiWoong. It wasn't a cute look -- people like smiling idols. Also, it seems increasingly clear that JiWoong is sort of a weirdo. He makes weird jokes, he has weird takes on things, he is comfortable with things that make other people uncomfortable, he's just an oddball. Personally, that makes me like him a lot more, but I don't know if most people are like me on that.
*That was an old MST3K joke, but it really fit here.
See, to my point about him being kind of a weirdo, when asked to say a few words, Kim Ji Woong says: “Besides rankings, I think the most important thing is an unbreakable heart. If Star Creators keep watering, I will bloom a huge flower. Thank you.”
Tumblr media
You guys, JiWoong is a riddle wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a fitted suit wrapped in other people’s sweat. Does he know how sexual this sounds? Is this all an accident? There's no way to know, but I love it.
Then Huta says that he’ll announce that the top four, and even though it couldn’t possibly be more obvious that it’s Matthew, Hanbin, Hao, and Yujin, we still have to wait fully 45 seconds for them to actually tell us.
The fourth place trainee actually came in first place in 70 countries, including the US, France, Italy, and Switzerland. At 2:32:47 we find out it’s Matthew, who has fallen two spots. And for the record, he still would have been in 4th place without all the benefits.
In fact, the only differences in ranking caused by the benefit at all is that (a) the formerly blue haired Park Hanbin, currently 13th, and Ricky, currently 14th, would be in the opposite order without the benefit and (b) Na Kamden, currently 20th, and that peach Lee Seunghwan, currently 21st, would be in the opposite order without the benefit. So… not that important, really.
Back to Matthew. Again, I’m really not surprised that his rank has fallen. As I hinted at earlier, his leadership of the Love Killa team was low key a disaster. He came across as officious and anxious, like a yippy chihauhua. I'm not trying to be mean, because I empathize. I'm a teacher -- as I've said before, I don't teach at a school and I work with all age groups, from little kids to adults who are my parents' age -- and I know how it feels to try to lead people from a place of anxiety. People smell it on you and don't like it. It makes them feel anxious, too. They push back more. And then it makes the leader even more anxious, which creates a feedback loop. The only way to get out of it is to take deep breaths and try to relax control a little. Give the conversational ball back to the students. Ask more questions, and accept more answers. But I'm not sure that Matthew ever figured out what had actually gone wrong with his leadership, and we get a sense in the beginning of this episode that he still has a lot to figure out about how teams and leadership work.
I guess I've digressed a bit, but the point I want to make is that Matthew showed a somewhat unlikable side to himself in episodes 6-7. And then his performance in Love Killa was nothing to write home about, since he was not a good fit for the song concept (as he himself seemed to realize later). I think it's not too late for him to right the ship, but I also think that the show's editors may have turned against him, and I'm not totally sure that he's a lock for Top9 anymore.
Anyway, for his speech, Matthew says, “I’m so thankful that I’m still in Top9. Star Creators, since you send me support and love, I’m becoming a stronger and happier Matthew.” Then he does that dumb little motto thing again and in the future, when he does that, these recaps will not mention it.
Tumblr media
Now it’s time for third place. The trainee was number one in China, which makes everyone think it’s probably Hao, but apparently Yujin is also really popular in China, and without much ado, we find out that it is in fact Han Yujin.
I love Park JiHoo in the peanut gallery saying, “So Hao-hyung will be 2nd place?” because it’s so obvious who first place will be.
Han Yujin’s voice is surprisingly deep, considering his young age. He says, “While watching survival programs since I was young” -- you are currently young, my friend -- I thought about how I’d feel if I sat in such a high place. I can’t believe this, and I’m so, so happy now. I’ll work harder to be a person who deserves this high place.”
Tumblr media
Then Huta teases him into doing his "thigh grab" move from Law again and we see several instant replays.
Tumblr media
Han Yujin is 15 ½ in international age. He’s only a few months older than Takuto. Ewwww.
Hey, psychopath child who told me to k!ll myse!f for “sexualizing” legal adult Park Gunwook, are you writing letters to MNET about this shit? Maybe you should be. Get your misdirected rage out that way, maybe.
So, Yujin takes his seat, and now we’ll spend almost seven minutes wasting time before we find out who came in first and who came in second, as if we don’t already know. But there was NO TIME to hear what Ricky, Chen Kuan Jui, or Zhang Shuai Bo had to say when they got their ranking, right?
Huta begins by commenting on Hanbin and Hao’s chemistry, and then we’re reminded that they were the two centers for Na Bina.  We see Matthew with a slightly weird expression.
Tumblr media
He almost looks angry. But who knows, maybe he's just trying not to sneeze.
Then Huta asks them things like “How do you feel about being a candidate for number one?” and “Do you think you can be number one?” They say the exact same stuff you’d expect them to say. Seriously, take a moment, imagine what you'd think they'd say. You got it right. That's what they said.
Tumblr media
The only thing that’s at least slightly interesting is when Huta asks Hao if he has anything to say to Hanbin, and Hao says, "Let's debut and drink zero cola every day." Also, we find out that Number 1 has 914,268 more points than number 2, which makes it even less likely that it’s not Hanbin.
So after all that, we find out the first place is, of course, Hanbin again.
Tumblr media
Hanbin pouts, which is a choice. I guess he feels a little uncomfortable with it--?  Hao doesn't even react because he already knew.
The trainees all say “as expected” and that Hanbin is really named “Han Bina” (like Na Bina, I’m Shining). Hanbin and Hao embrace as the void itself closes in on them.
Tumblr media
Somehow they escape the void, and then we get to hear from each of them.
Hanbin says: “I gained strength from many people who supported me. Thanks to them, I'm spending a meaningful and memorable day every day. Team Love Me Right, including [Han] Seo Bin who I really miss, and team Tomboy that brought me luck. And not everyone is here but while watching the passion of 98 trainees in Boys Planet, I think I've grown up more. I'll continue to try hard, rather than just stay in the same place. I'll keep the number one place to the end." Then, he switches to Chinese, and while Hao rubs his back and various Chinese trainees smile, he says, " I think I'm getting better because of you. Thank you, Star Creators."
(In case you forgot who Han Seo Bin is, he's Park JiHoo's friend, the rapper kid who Hui chose to be on Love Me Right. )
Zhang Hao says, “Hello, I'm trainee Zhang Hao. Today's Zhang Hao isn't perfect yet. But I will try my best and make a performance that exceeds your expectations. I'll prove that you are right to like Trainee Zhang Hao." Then Zhang Hao switches to Japanese and Zhang Hao says, “Thank you for supporting me. You're my strong supporter. I will do my best to be your pride." Thank you, Zhang Hao for giving that speech about Zhang Hao!
My theory is that Gyuvin, Hanbin, and Hao were talking in their Love Killa group about how to get more support from areas where they're less popular. Gyuvin targeted the international market in general, Hanbin targeted China, and Hao targeted Japan.
So, now that we've found out who is ranked 1-27, only one chair remains...
The final spot: 28th place
At 2:42:50 it's time to find out the last trainee who survived elimination in rank 28. Who are the candidates?
Sung Hanbin, Kim Gyuvin, Keita, and Tumblr user Boys Planet Recaps are all hoping it's Lee Yedam. Thanks, MNET, for first screwing him over by not showing his audition in episode 2, and then turning the screws now, just letting us all know that the highest ranked trainees all respect the shit out of him but that we’re going to lose him from the show.
Tumblr media
Anyway, we find out our three “candidates”, ie those ranked 28, 29 and 30 in some order, are..
Tumblr media
Mun Jung Hyeon, Hiroto, and Ma Jing Xiang.
And then we find out that 30th place is…
Tumblr media
Ma Jing Xiang. Oh Sungmin is shocked.
He bows politely, and trainees call out encouragement. Huta says that MJX has “shown passionate drive all this time”, and that is a nice way to put it.
MJX seems to be ok -- he’s got to be at least slightly relieved to be able to get away from this stressful environment. He says, “Actually, I don’t have any regrets, because many Star Creators have voted for me and cheered me on. So it’s so heartwarming for me. I love you all.” Aww, that’s nice! I wish more trainees would focus on that -- yeah, you may have lost, but look at the hundreds of thousands of votes you got!
Now it’s down to Mun Jung Hyeon, who I’ve liked ever since his performance in The Real for the Star Level Test, and Hiroto, who I don’t feel like I know very well, and who has never like, blown me away with his performance. So, obviously I’m hoping for Mun. But at the same time, we only have three Japanese trainees in the top 27 -- Keita, Haruto, and Takuto. (What is with all the Japanese trainees going just be their personal name? Did MNET make them do that?) So it would be good to have another Japanese trainee around, just to make this not so much of a K-fest. And I know a lot of people really like Hiroto, so it’d be nice to get to know him better.
We scan the audience, and oh, Mun’s label mate and hyung, TaeRae, is crying a little, while his other hyung, Park Hanbin, has his hands lifted in prayer. We know that Takuto is hoping desperately for Hiroto-kun. And Huta tells us that the difference between the two is only 60,510 points -- oh, ouch!!
Tumblr media
And at 2:47:35, we find out that….
Haruto has survived, and Mun is out.
The two of them hug. Kim Tae Rae covers his eyes with his hands.
Haruto says, in Korean, “I am so fascinated by everything that’s happening. I can’t tell whether this is a dream or reality. But I’ll do my best going forward to return the favor. Thank you.” Aww, he probably prepared that speech. Then pretty much all the trainees come running over to hug him, including a sobbing Takuto.
Then Huta says, “Trainee Mun Jung Hyun has to leave Boys Planet at Number 29 for the difference in one ranking.” Nice! What a great comment to make! So helpful.
TaeRae is really crying now, so Mun calls out “Uljima!!!” (Don’t cry!) But he’s low key saying it to himself. He goes on, “Up until Hiroto’s name was announced, I wished that I could leave after performing in the last stage.” (He means the Artist Mission.) “I’m very disappointed, but I’m sure Hiroto will perform very well in my place. … I didn’t want to make you cry!” he adds, as many trainees do, in fact, cry. “Thank you for everything, and especially, to the Star Creators who enabled me to perform twice already, I want to sincerely thank you. Thank you!”
And that’s the end of the second elimination. We pan slowly over the remaining trainees…
Tumblr media
…and Brian is just a study in misery. Ji Yun Seo, who is actually two years younger than Brian, looks at his fellow Yuehua trainee with concern. YunSeo is such a papa bear type for someone so young, isn’t he?
Huta says some stuff about how they did a good job and will be remembered forever, but a tear is rolling down Cai Jin Xin’s face. Awww, he’s not really that good at anything but I’m fond of him. He seems like a real nice guy. Not a Nice Guy, but a guy who is nice. You know what I mean.
Then Huta congratulates the trainees who have made the cut, but warns them that they’re still not safe. To the Star Creators, he says, “For the boys who are desperately awaiting your love and cheer, we would be grateful if you would give them your precious one vote.” Park JiHoo looks dead to the camera and mimicks tapping on a phone. I love that kid.
Tumblr media
And Dang Hong Hai says that’ll be voting. Yeah, DHH! He’s staying classy. I love it.
The voting opens! From now on, we can pick three boys only. Oh no, my heart is already broken.
But that’s about it for this episode, and this post!
In my next post, I’ll list the order I found online for the rankings 29 to 51, and give you my thoughts/ideas on what might happen next for the trainees who were eliminated. Then in another post I’ll address the five Artist Mission songs/groups, and what happened for that first hour of Ep 8, along with some thoughts on those videos they released.
Thanks as always for reading! If you're enjoying the recaps, please consider sharing them in non-Tumblr spaces because it'd be cool to get the word out and help people who like this kind of recap find me!
See you next time. <3

Summary:
American Born Chinese tells the story of teenager Jin Wang (played by Ben Wang), a son of Chinese immigrants, who for the most part is a typical high school kid. He collects manga, tries to join the soccer team, and is on a journey dealing with his own identity as he tries to figure out who he is. One day, Wei-Chen (Jimmy Liu), an exchange student, arrives at Jin's school. Unlike Jin, Wei-Chen didn't grow up in America, is loud and open by nature, and doesn't exhibit Jin's self-doubt and insecurities. At times, this causes Jin to feel embarrassed being associated with Wei-Chen.
Wei-Chen is revealed to be the son of Sun Wukong (portrayed by Daniel Wu), commonly known as the Monkey King, a legendary figure in Chinese literature. Wei-Chen had a dream that the mythical Fourth Scroll can stop an uprising against Heaven. The dream also told him that an ordinary teenager is destined to aid him in his search. So Wei-Chen stole his father's magical staff and is now, disguised as a high schooler, searching for the scroll in earthly California, convinced that Jin is the ordinary teenager from his prophetic dream.

Zhuge Liang checks off pretty much everything I love in a character:
美 beautiful: the historical record describes him as tall and good looking
强 powerful: In his youth he led his lord on a path to victory against all odds with his unparalleled brilliance. After his lord’s death he became the absolute ruler of the Shu Kingdom, the hand behind the throne, the menace to a neighboring kingdom five times his size
惨 tragic: He died at the age of fifty-seven on his final military campaign, dragging his sick and broken body to campaign after campaign all to fulfill a promise to his long dead king. 出师未捷身先死,长使英雄泪满襟
Charismatic: His colleagues loved him, his enemies admired him, and his people worshiped him (literally, in some places). For example, Sun Quan, King of Wu, said he was“extraordinarily graceful” after his diplomatic mission to the Wu.
Confidence: This man had absolute confidence in his own brilliance and he wasn’t wrong
Ambitious: His life goal was to conquer all of China (“restoring the Han dynasty”) and ruling over it as prime minister
Strong sense of responsibility: After the death of his king, the entire weight of the Shu Kingdom fell on Kongming’s shoulders and slowly crushed him to death.
Ruthless: He (unsuccessfully) advised Liu Bei to just take the lands of his relatives instead of trying to uphold loyalty towards them. He successfully convinced Liu Bei to kill his adopted son Liu Feng for failing to aid Guan Yu (which led to Guan Yu’s death) using the argument that Liu Feng would challenge his power after Liu Bei’s death. He ordered the death of his last remaining childhood friend who he had loved like a little brother because the childhood friend screwed up his military campaign and Zhuge Liang needed to make an example of him.
Repressed: For the sake of his kingdom, he consistently set aside his love for his family (the brother who served the Wu Kingdom, the sister in the Wei Kingdom who was murdered by Liu Bei’s attacking army) and close friends (Ma Shu, the childhood friend who loyally followed him all the way from Jing Zhou to the Shu Kingdom to the northern campaign, only to be beheaded on his orders). But we know from his remaining personal letters that he cared deeply about them and mourned their losses.
A Tortured Soul: He really beat himself up over the fact that he failed to conquer a land five times the size of his country and thus failed to fulfill his and Liu Bei’s shared dream of restoring the Han Empire

DRDT Père Noël AU
idk how to describe this, evillious is my special interest and drdt is a hyperfixation, let's just go
i've also tried making this intelligible for people who aren't familiar with evillious as well... at least i hope so
Apocalypse - The Predecessors
In resistance to the highly oppressive government of Hope's Peak Kingdom, Mai Akasaki founds the organisation Apocalypse. She intends for them to take radical action against the government, with minimal harm to civilians. An early recruit is one David Chiem. He is a Ghoul Child, created by a certain scientist from another world, Charles Cuevas. David is less concerned with the safety of civilians, and gradually starts gaining more control within the organisation. Eventually, he's able to expel Mai from it entirely, becoming its new leader. He's known by the public as "the Master of Malice". Mai begins trying to prevent Apocalypse's harm, with little success.
Other members of Apocalypse include fellow Ghoul Child Veronika Grebenshchikova. She is highly skillful with magic and is known as "the Witch of Merrigod". She also serves as David's right hand man. Ace Markey is a Ghoul Child too, but is only in Apocalypse briefly. Xander "Red Fiend" Matthews and former priest Nico "Black Baron" Hakobyan are the leaders of Apocalypse's two armies. Hu Jing is not a formal Apocalypse member, but occasionally assists them as she is a friend of David.
Hope's Peak Catastrophe and End of Apocalypse
cw: brief mention of pregnancy and miscarriage
Hope's Peak is aware of their imminent doom and so they set in motion "Project MA", to reincarnate The God of Luck in a human form. In its first iteration, Mai Akasaki is selected as Divine Mother, as her magic is powerful and her past with Apocalypse is not publicly known. She miscarriages. The next attempt is of Veronika Grebenshchikova, who Charles Cuevas helps hide the identity of. She successfully births a child, but not a divine one.
In a final attempt, four candidates are left: Hu Jing, noblewoman J Rosales (her magic isn't all that powerful but is considered thanks to her family's bribery), Ace's sister Eden Markey, and Eden's fiancée Teruko Tawaki. In order to guarantee the spot, Eden kills Hu and J. Teruko, knowing Eden will soon turn on her as well, holds a ritual so that the God of Luck reincarnates directly to her rather than needing to birth it. This fails, so much so that the entirety of Hope's Peak Kingdom is burnt to a crisp. Only two survive.
Teruko is pitied by the God of Luck, whose soul fuses with hers, granting her immortality. Charles finds Eden dying and gives her a dog/cat-like body so that at least this one Ghoul Child will live on. He himself dies shortly afterwards. In this new form, Eden can temporarily possess people and use them as vessels.
Teruko is directionless, but when she realises Eden's fury at her and vow to enact revenge, she decides to dedicate her now infinite time to preventing Eden's evils.
Père Noël
(yes, finally, what this was supposed to be about in the first place but i got sidetracked in backstory-)
Decades pass. Inspired by the Apocalypse of old, Eden, now going by the surname Tobisa, founds the organisation Père Noël along with her newly appointed apprentice Arei Nageishi. Its members are as follows:
1st, Santa Claus - Eden Tobisa
The founder and leader. She utilises a vessel similar in appearance to her original form. In her day life she is a well-respected businesswoman in Avenir city.
2nd, Dealer - Arturo Giles
Handles smuggling of goods. Comes from a family which used to be of lower nobility. Joined Père Noël for the money. In his day life, he is his wife Rose's manager.
3rd, Sleep Princess - Rose Giles (maiden name Lacroix)
Handles poisons. Was aware of Père Noël for some time before joining due to her husband, but only joined when Shadow offered her a position. In her day life, she is a somewhat successful painter. A common motif in her art are dolls.
4th, Shadow - Arei Nageishi
Handles espionage. Miss Santa's apprentice and co-founder of Père Noël. Her origins and background are unknown. She's only informed of the basics of Miss Santa's motives and enemy.
5th, Pierrot - Whit Young
Handles assassinations. Miss Santa deeply trusts him and treats him as if he were her son. Publicly he is stated to be her nephew whom she adopted after him being orphaned. In his day life he is a student.
6th, Venom - Levi Fontana
The "cleanup guy". In his day life he is the assistant to Miss Santa. Joined Père Noël out of admiration for her.
7th, Magician - "Nikki Udacha" (Teruko Tawaki)
Handles magic. Took on this disguise to infiltrate the organisation, however she is not very cooperative. She's body-swapped with a descendent of Veronika Grebenshchikova and so Miss Santa does not recognise her.
8th, Sniper - Min Jeung
Handles guns and occasionally assassinations. She is Magician's apprentice, studying magic. She's aware of Magician's past with Miss Santa, but does not have much personal investment in it, only focusing on learning magic.
...............................................................................
So that's it, this took way longer to write than it should've... Even then it's only focused on Sloth arc and some of Original Sin Story but I will NOT make the fucking entirety of Evillious fit with this (maybe).
Please let me know anything you think about this or any questions you have (especially if you're not Evillious brainrotted, I am very willing to infodump /lh)
Bye-bye!!!

In service to Wang Mang 2 (HHS)
(Including the early travails of Ma Yuan)
[HHS022]
Jing Dan, courtesy name Sunqing, was a native of Liyang in Pingyi. As young he studied in Chang'an. At the time of Wang Mang he studied the Four Categories.
The Eastern Watchtower Records says: In the time of Wang Mang they lifted up scholars of the schools of Virtuous Acts, Able Speech,Thoroughness in Government Affairs, and Clarity in Writing.
Dan for his ability in speech became Chancellor to the Marquis of Gude, and was praised for having the capacity to manage affairs. He moved to Deputy to the Joint Leader of Shuodiao.
Shuodiao is Shanggu. Deputy is Dependant Prefect.
[HHS023]
Dou Rong, courtesy name Zhougong, was a native of Pingling in Fufeng. His seventh generation ancestor Guangguo was August Empress Xiaowen's younger brother, and was ennobled Marquis of Zhangwu. Rong's great-great-grandfather in the time of Emperor Xuan as a Two Thousand Shi official moved from Changshan to there.
Rong was orphaned young. In the middle of Wang Mang's administration, he became Marshal to the General of Strong Crossbows, went east to strike Zhai Yi, and turned back to attack Huaili. For his merit with the army he was ennobled Baron of Jianwu.
The General of Strong Crossbows was Mang's Marquis of Mingyi, Wang Jun. Zhao Ming, Huo Hong, and other of Huaili rose up with troops in response to Zhai Yi. Wang Yi and others routed Zhai Yi and turned back. The combined army struck Ming, Hong, and others, and wiped them out. Rong at the time was accompanying that army, see the Book of Han. The Eastern Watchtower Records and the Continued Book of Han both state he became Baron of Ningwu.
His younger sister became the junior wife of the Great Minister of Works, Wang Yi. He had his family within Chang'an, and set out to enter among the nobles and their kin. He formed connections with prominent and outstanding of his hamlet, and became famous due to his reliance on chivalry. However, he served his mother and older brother and raised his younger brother, and within cultivated acting with right-mindedness.
[HHS024]
Ma Yuan, courtesy name Wenyuan, was a native of Maoling in Fufeng. His ancestor Zhao She was a Zhao general and was titled Lord of Mafu. His sons and grandsons following that used it as their clan. In the time of Emperor Wu, [the family] as Two Thousand Shi officials, moved from Handan to there.
The Eastern Watchtower Records says: They moved to Chenghuan Village in Maoling.
His great-grandfather Tong for his merit was ennobled Marquis of Zhonghe. He was implicated in his older brother Heluo's rebellion and was executed. For that reason Yuan's two generations were not distinguished.
Ma Heluo was good friends with Jiang Yun. When Yun was executed, he consequently feared the crime would reach himself, planned rebellion, and submitted to execution. For the affair, see the Book of Han.
Yuan's grandfather and father did not manage to do distinguished service. In the Eastern Watchtower Han Records, Tong begot Bin, who in the time of Emperor Xuan as Gentleman Holding the Tally was titled Envoy Lord. The Envoy Lord begot Zhong, Zhong's official position reached Marshal of Dark Martiality. Zhong begot Yuan.
Yuan had three older brothers, Kuang, Yu, and Yuan#. All had talent and ability, and in the time of Wang Mang all became Two Thousand Shi officials.
The Eastern Watchtower Records says: Kuang, courtesy name Changping [or Zhangping?]. Yu, courtesy name Shengqing. Yuan, courtesy name Jizhu.
Kuang became Grand Warden of Henan, Yu Colonel of the Central Ramparts. Yuan# Joint Leader of Zengshan.
Yuan was orphaned at the age of twelve. As young he had great aspirations, his older brothers were amazed by him. He once received the Qi Poetry, but his thoughts were unable to hold on to its chapters and sentences.
The Eastern Watchtower Records says: He received the Qi poetry, his teacher was Man Chang of Yingchuan.
He therefore explained to Kuang, and wished to go to a border commandery and engage in farming and herding.
The Eastern Watchtower Records says: Yuan, since Kuang had set out to become Grand Warden of Henan, and his next two older brothers were officials in the Capital City, saw that the family's means were not sufficient. Therefore he explained to Kuang his wish to go to a border commandery and engage in livestock herding.
Kuang said:
You have great talent and will successful later on. A good craftsman does not show people the raw materials, follow what you are fond of.
It happened that Kuang passed. Yuan wore mourning clothes for the full year and did not leave the place where the tomb was. He respectfully served his widowed sister-in-law, and he did not put on his cap or enter the house.
Later he became the commandery's Courier Supervisor, and sent off prisoners the Minister of Instructions' Office. There was a prisoner who had committed a serious crime. Yuan had sympathy for him, and released him, and thereupon became a fugitive in the northern lands. There was an amnesty, following that he stayed behind to herd livestock. There were many retainers who returned to adhere to him, and consequently his servants and dependants numbered several hundred families.
The Continued Book of Han: Yuan went beyond the northern lands, and relied on herding the clan's livestock. Since Yuan's grandfather Bin originally had stayed in Tianshui, and his father also once had been Prefect of the Herdsmen Teachers. At that time Yuan# had become Envoy for Protecting Pastures, and for that reason the retainers all relied on Yuan.
He shifted and drifted between Long and Han, and often spoke to his retainers, saying:
When a grown man has aspirations, destitution will increase his firmness, age will increase his sturdiness
Following that, he settled to engage in farming and herding, and reached to have several thousand heads of cattle, horses and sheep, and several ten thousand hu of grain. Then he sighed and said:
In general, the growth of goods, wealth and property, is prized for its ability to distribute relief. If not, then [you] are a prisoner to defending money, and that is all.
He therefore fully distributed it to his brothers and old friends, and personally wore sheep fur clothes and hide trousers.
At the end of Wang Mang, when troops rose in the four regions, Mang's junior cousin, the General of Guards, broadly summoned the valiant and outstanding, and then nominated Yuan and Yuan She of the same county to be staff members, and recommended them to Mang. Mang used She as Great Governor of Zhenrong and Yuan as Great Governor of Xincheng.
Wang Mang changed Tianshui to be Zhenrong and Grand Warden to be Great Governor. He changed Hanzhong to be Xincheng.

Clear and Muddy Loss of Love/泾渭情殇 by 请君莫笑
Tumblr media
(Art from the audiodrama on Mao'er, with the named changed to 泾渭无间)
Synopsis
Qiyan Agula is the orphaned survivor of the Jing royal family, an ethnic nomadic tribe wiped out a decade ago in a war with the Wei kingdom. Vowing revenge, she takes the identity of a man named Qi Yan, and tries to enter the Wei government through its Imperial Exams and destroy it from the inside. However, her plans go awry when the Emperor asks Qi Yan to marry his favorite daughter Nangong Jingnu.
Qi Yan's powerful teacher and benefactor, a princess of the previous dynasty, is also determined to destroy the Nangong court. She has a network of spies helping Qi Yan maintain her secret identity to continue with the revenge plan. After earning the trust of the young and naive princess, Qi Yan begins to work with the princes, using their political influence to her advantage while prodding on them to turn on each other in the competition to become Crown Prince.
The Wei Kingdom is plagued by poor policy, a corrupt and entrenched gentry, and ambitious neighbors at its borders. In the maelstrom of politicking and backstabbing, Nangong Jingnu is the only person in the world who really cares for her "husband" Qi Yan like family, and Qi Yan is tortured by the reminder that the person she has grown to care for is the daughter of her arch nemesis. As Emperor Nangong Rang's health deteriorates, Jingnu is forced to grow up and learn about the history and politics behind her life of privilege, and choose her path in this world ...
Thoughts that live rent-free in my head [unmarked spoiler ahead]
Political Intrigue
Political Intrigue is what initially hooked me on this novel. It's not super intricate or rigorous, but it's definitely above-average for a historical web novel. The scope of the political intrigue covers palace intrigue and imperial succession, politicking among the elite classes, the impact of policy and inequality on grass root citizens, local/regional governance, and of course, the opportunities and complications brought by neighboring nations with a different culture and ethnicity.
I'm kind of picky with political intrigue stories. It's hard to write "the protagonist is smart and strategic" while also avoiding "everyone else is stupid and incapable of independent thought." Qi Yan has the physical constitution of a dry leaf that will disintegrate with one wrong move, but she is given an over-powered political brain to make up for it. She is knowledgeable about everything that is relevant, her complex plans usually pan out perfectly, and she is rarely outclassed or cornered in these power games. But the plot and action are tightly-paced, which keeps me engaged instead of dwelling on potential plot holes.
Unlike most c-novels I have read, this story highlights the perspective of the nomadic tribes, and (at least in the main story line) does not end with the Han-coded emperor "unifying" the land. The tribes still do not have the most flattering portrayal, as we see with the Nagus Clan's numerous deceptions and scandalous affairs, and Bayin's obstination and simpleness. However, Qi Yan has memories and ideals for a freer and kinder tribal life, and we empathize her grief for the loss of that way of life.
Qi Yan
Qi Yan is a very interesting character. She is smart, ruthless, drowning in rage and grief, but only rarely loses herself in it. While her mentor has trained her to lean into hatred and resentment, Qi Yan is not ignorant to the kindness, sincerity, and innocence of the most Wei citizens who had nothing to do with her family's death. She eventually narrows the scope of her revenge to the core of the Nangong court, and is earnestly helping the Wei citizens when working as an official.
I love the portrayal and transformation of the rage and resentment Qi Yan feels over the loss of her family and tribe. We see her grow from being consumed by vengeance, to sympathizing with innocent people, to trying to make the best out of the good things she has, and finally, to realizing there are things she just cannot forgive.
A lot of stories get very preachy about things like vengeance and forgiveness, and c-novels especially tend to have marginalized people absolve the Han-coded emperors or officials to "prioritize the big picture" But this story really leans into the humanity of the love and grief that drives Qi Yan's rage. The decision she makes about it in the end is so wonderfully flawed and completely in character -- because there is just no way for all this to end perfectly after all that's happened.
Jingnu
As for Nangong Jingnu, I really do think she is a poor precious sweet angel who did not deserve *gestures vaguely at the whole plot* this but this is such a classical case of sins of the father. And her father really is a terrible person to everyone, including his other eleven children, except for her.
She has an amazing character arc, starting as an naive princess and eventually ending up as a competent and wise Empress Regent. I think her growth as a politician is a bit too quick and smooth. For a long time she is consistently outclassed by other politicians like Qi Yan, but very quickly she becomes an independent ruler. Still, it's very satisfying to see her finally becoming a force for change in their broken world.
One thing I find very interesting about Jingnu is her devotion to the imperfect people that she loves. Her father and Qi Yan never show her the full extent of their darker sides, but she loves that best version of them so fiercely. As her father's favorite princess, she is respected and pampered, but no one truly dares to get too close to her because she is ranked higher than everyone. I think that loneliness really did a number on her. She finds home in Qi Yan so she is determined to keep it, and I'm just happy she can have the thing she really wants (even though I do not think this relationship has been fair to her).
Other thoughts
An interesting side effect I noticed while reading the novel, which centers on Qi Yan's POV, is I ended up internalizing some of her cynical and revenge-focused world view. I felt fairly disaffected by most of the character deaths in the story because Qi Yan did not want to care about them; even if she objectively knows they are not all terrible, she is not prone to being sympathetic to most Wei officials. When I finally sympathize with a supporting character, I keep on praying that he won't be revealed to be total trash a few story arcs down the line, because it happens a lot. It's nearly 90% into the novel when I finally come across a character death that genuinely saddened me.
There are many great female characters in this story. Jingnu's wise-and-caring oldest sister helps her out of many pinches, and the gentle-but-resilient second sister gets a fantastic story line and side CP. Tribal princess Jiya is ambitious, brave, and made my jaw drop some many times (in joy and in shock). The mysterious princess of the previous dynasty is also amazing (even as a villain) and makes you wonder how history might have changed if she became the ruler instead of her brother.
I was a bit disappointed that many side characters' story lines are are still left wide open at the end of such a long novel, but the author's note convinced me this is for the best. The author has given this universe and these characters so much life that their own stories can and should go on for millions of words more, and it's both impossible and unfair to think they will all wrap up neatly just as Qi Yan and Jingnu's story ends.
And last but not least, the theme song from the AD is just so goooooooood

Note
What was the greatest victory of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms?
If we take the history of the state from Liu Bei's independence in Jing (209), I'd say the greatest success was the conquest of Yi province. That became the core of the empire and it was a very well-conducted campaign. Nothing else really came close.
If we only say from Liu Bei's taking the throne on, probably Wang Ping's victory over Cao Shuang. It was an excellently fought campaign where a large army was driven back with minimal losses. Alternatively you might say the campaigns in Nanzhong under Zhuge Liang and (particularly) Ma Zhong. These were essential for establishing Shu's control over the region, which was vital for its survival.

Boys Planet Dual Position Battle, final bits and thoughts
Tumblr media
This recap will cover the final point reveals from the end of episode 7, as well as my final thoughts on the performances, including my own ranking and my analysis of MNET screentime allocation (I have the numbers, my loves).
Ranking announcement from the end of ep 6
Ok, here’s the ranking announcement from the end of episode 6. At this point, ep 8 is probably out, so this is out of date, but it’s still kind of interesting.
What I did is, I put the votes in my spreadsheet and found the average number of votes per trainee, which turned out to be 818,005. Then I had the spreadsheet calculate what percent of the average vote each person’s vote was. I think that helps put the number of votes in perspective. For example, international sweetheart Sung Hanbin’s 3.3 million votes represented 404% of the average (in other words, more than four times the average!). Meanwhile, poor Feel Special member Lee Donggun’s 81,739 votes represents about 10% of the average. Ouch.
What’s kind of interesting is that the top 15 were all 123% or more of the average or higher, while from 16 to 51, they were all 89% or lower of the average. It’s really a kind of haves and have-nots situation here.
People who were on a team that got the 100,000 benefit will be marked in blue. People who also got the 150,000 personal benefit will be marked in purple. Members of Zoom are marked in green (because I think they should have won.)
Sung Han Bin 3,307,923 404%
Han Yujin 2,909,883  356%
Seok Matthew 2,825,146 345%

The Performances, the votes, and the rankings
In the last ten minutes or so of episode 7, they gather the trainees together in what might be the space where the audience usually stands, and torture them for a bit before finally revealing how many votes each team got. The winner within each category gets to perform on MNET countdown, each member gets 100,000 extra points, and the number one ranked team member on that team gets an extra 150,000 extra points.
Below, I list the songs, the audience votes they received, and the total screen time (adding up the episode 6 segment and the longer segment in episode 6 or 7). I list them in order of audience vote.
Vocal and Rap
Tomboy 860 votes, 27 minutes of screentime
Man in love 752 votes, 14.5 minutes of screentime
Limousine 719 votes, 13.5 minutes of screentime
Not Spring… 617 votes, 15 minutes of screentime
Winner: Tomboy; Zhang Hao gets the extra benefit
My thoughts:
My favorite is easily Limousine. I just loved this performance. Man in Love and Not Spring were about tied for me; each had one singer I quite enjoy and a few singers I don’t enjoy as much, and neither was a song that I exactly want to listen to over and over. I guess Tomboy actually came in last for me -- I would rather listen to any of the other three again than listen to Tomboy again. If I’m watching the performances, then I’d rather watch Limousine the most -- the performance is so emotional and so good -- but after, that I’d obviously choose to watch Man in Love to see TaeRae’s weird elf face that I like so much. So, putting all that together, my rank is:
Limousine
Man in Love
Not Spring…
Tomboy
Vocal and Dance
Love Killa 840 votes, 20.5 minutes minutes of screentime
Home 716 votes, 19 minutes of screentime
Feel Special 677 votes, 19 minutes of screentime
Butterfly 664 votes, 19 minutes of screentime
Winner: Love Killa; Kim Gyuvin gets the extra votes
My thoughts:
None of these performances exactly floated my boat. Love Killa was marred by sort of blank performances, in my opinion (though it’s cool with me if you liked it, hope I’m not yucking your yum). Home was lovely at times but marred by tight, strained vocals here and there. Feel Special was a mess, brightened by Woongki's cuteness and, honestly, Z-bo's cheerful performance (I'm not his biggest fan, but it's not like the audience vote came out of completely nowhere). And Butterfly just sort of fell apart, as beautiful as Chen Kuan Jui's dancing was. I don’t really want to watch any of these performances again, or listen to them either.
I tried thinking, ok, which one would I want to watch a fancam of? For example, if it was a fancam of Gyuvin from Love Killa vs. a fancam of Woongki from Feel Special vs. a fancam of Chen Kuan Jui from Butterfly vs. a fancam of Yoon Jong Woo from Home, which would I prefer? And I found myself just ranking them based on how much I like the song itself. So my ranking is meaningless. They're all tied for 2nd place. No one is in first. First place is held in reserve for how good Love Killa would have been if Yoon Jong Woo and/or Ricky had been in the group instead of Matthew and/or Seo Won. (Sorry! I love Seo Won and want to get fro-yo with him, but the song didn't really suit him.)
Rap and Dance
Law 846 votes, 19 minutes of screentime
Zoom 813 votes, 14 minutes  of screentime
Gang 798 votes, 12 minutes of screentime
Rush Hour 742 votes, 20.5 minutes of screentime
Winner: Law; Park Hanbin gets the extra votes
My thoughts:
This one is easy. Zoom. Zoom is my winner, hands down.
I can see why Law won. It was exciting and sexy and the boys looked good. I like all five of these trainees a lot and think they're great performers. But here’s the thing about Law -- it’s so fucking good the first few times you watch it, but then it gets kind of dull. It’s just all kind of monotonous dancing, you know? Yeah, there’s the stupid flag wave, but there’s nothing else to break it up.
In contrast, I keep noticing more cool things about Zoom as I watch it over and over. Like, the detail of how, when Wumuti does that kind of lifted leg butt wiggle on the line, “Wumumutiti!,”  the other trainees do a far scaled down version of the move, so that they’re supporting him but your eye still stays on Wumuti. It’s so subtle, but it’s cool because it controls where your focus is. I like being led around visually as I watch a dance -- tell me where I should look, choreography! Also, and I’m aware that this isn’t a unique take, but I love the way that the end of each rap section connects to the beginning of the next one. It makes it all feel like this is a real team, not just trainees who got stuck with each other. And I get so excited when I hear Wumuti’s awesome screech “Lights Camera Action baby!” and I know it’s Haruto’s dance break. YES!!!! Haruto, hit that breakdance pose and hold it for the camera click sound! It’s also so fun to watch Haruto’s fan cam and see him cheerfully clowning around with the other trainees when they were on the sidelines, during the performance. Ollie's cute rap, Hyunbeen saying "braggadocious," it's all so charming. They’re just all having so much fun. They’re IN the performance.
For the record, I assume it was Keita behind most of what’s good here. From what I’ve heard, he did basically everything for this song, and did a lot in previous challenges, too. Keita’s so good that even MNET’s editing can’t hide him. The judges won’t shut up about him and every single other trainee respects him. I’m so glad that the audience sees it too.
So, Law won over Zoom in part (in my opinion) because Law was sexier -- I have a whole other post about how I think that Zoom’s styling really brought them down. But it may also have been the scheduling. I saw someone talking (in the comments section of The Bias List) about how she was in the audience for the taping of these performances! Jealous. According to her, it took ages and ages, with lots of time in between performances. She says Zoom was the last performance and by then, it was midnight and the audience was exhausted by then. But the team started performing and it was so energetic and fun that everyone in the audience jumped into life again. This is all according to a person on the internet, I can’t substantiate it, but I don’t know, it kind of rings true.
It would be like MNET to try to sabotage Keita. Production had to know how good Zoom was and that it was likely to win, which would give 100,000 points to Ollie, Wumuti, Haruto, and Park Hyunbeen, and almost certainly would mean 250,000 points for Keita. If you look at the vote list above, you can see how much 100,000 points would mean for most members on this team. Yes this is just an interim vote and the final tally would be bigger overall, but even so, 100,000 points would help lock Haruto into safe territory, it would probably ensure Ollie's survival, and it would give Wumuti and Hyunbeen a fighting chance. 250,000 more votes might also move Keita up one space in the top 9. Scheduling Zoom last meant that it was an exhausted, cranky crowd who were voting, and that probably hurt it.
Anyway, enough about Zoom and Law. What about the other two groups?
As for Ggang, I think it was never going to appeal to me much because the song itself isn’t really my style. It’s not the trainees’ fault at all -- they did a decent job. But nothing about this performance specifically grabbed my attention to where I’d want to watch it over and over, and my little cousin Kum Jun Hyeon's shirt lift joke didn’t strike my fancy.
And of course, Rush Hour just drags my spirit down when I try to watch it. I don’t know if I’d feel differently if I didn’t know the back story, but I do know the backstory, and I can’t turn that part of my brain off.
So in the end, I guess my rank is:
Zoom
Zoom
Zoom
The other teams
Oh, and here’s my pie chart of the number of minutes devoted to each team. It’s kind of wild to see how little time was devoted to Zoom compared to Tomboy, isn’t it?
Tumblr media
As for the new songs that they’re going to be performing for the “Artist Battle”...
Oriental Pop “Switch” - sounds like a lost NCT Dream song
Sentimental Hip Hop “SuperCharger” - fast paced, kind of like Law
R&B Pop “Over Me” is sexy and charismatic
New-tro synth pop “Say My Name” is cute and lighthearted
Funk Pop “En garde” is sort of weirdly forgettable.
Based on my theory on how important sexiness is, I think most of them will want #3, whether it suits them or not. Dancer types like Wang Zi Hao will probably want #2, and cutie pies like Woongki will probably want #4. It’ll be fun to see who ends up in which group, and whether it was the song they wanted or not. I’ll especially be interested in where the fans put Matthew, because he keeps trying to do sexy concepts and I think he’d be much better suited for something more like #4.
Ok! We're finally done! And episode 8 is out. In fact, it's been out for a week if you knew where to look, and I did know where to look, but I have held back and didn't spoil myself.
Hope you're having a lovely day, hope that good things happen to you, and hope that all your pants are real sparkly. See you in the next one!
