madeline thought her heart might beat out of her chest as she pulled into their driveway, parking her car behind ezra's. tonight was the night. she'd had her gynecologist appointment at the start of the week, and, after a few sore days, she was back to normal following the removal of her iud. she'd been planning to surprise ezra with the news after a nice evening in. she'd picked up his favorite dinner and asked him if he could close the shop a bit early so they could have a date night. his car was confirmation that he made that work for her and this was happening. she couldn't wait to tell him.
she walked into the house with the full bag of dinner and a bouquet she'd made at work in the other. "i'm home," she said warmly, seeing the top of ezra's head in an armchair in the living room. she dropped her things on the dining room table, taking off her jean jacket and kicking off her chucks before padding across the wooden floors back to him.
"hi baby," she sat across his lap and pressed her lips to his neck in a soft kiss. "how was your day?"

madeline stirred from her sleep, leaning away from the comfort of her boyfriend's shoulder as she began to wake up. one of her hands had been laced with his, the other resting comfortably on the small bump of her stomach. as she came to, she saw the sun was getting low in the sky, and she had been asleep most of their drive for their weekend getaway. she'd insisted she wanted to drive the second half of the leg (it was about four hours in total), but seeing the signage for where they were, they were probably about 45 minutes away from their final destination.
"aw man," she whispered under her breath, sitting up fully to rub her eyes with her knuckles. "i'm sorry i passed out like that, baby." she looked over and smiled at the features of her favorite person: his dark hair with salt and pepper strands, the scruff on his jaw, his perfect pink lips she loved so much. "give me a second to wake up and i can take over."

Redrew some old Ocs!
They're from a story that I started to write when I was 14. :)
(Which is actually 2 stories that I made into only one, the first being "Edgar Mouret (2014-15)" the life of a 27 year old schizophrenic gravedigger and "Flowers of a Blood Garden (2016-17)", a story told by a serial killer who thinks that he should kill everyone he loves).
It got a lot of changes as the years passed, creating "The Gentleman of the East End", which kept the whole serial killer thing, but instead of his loved ones now he kills prostitutes to write their stories as crime novels + Edgar's story that would show the sadness of living with a mental illness so painful as schizophrenia in a time that didn't have all the advancements needed to fully treat it.
And as I never really did a lot with it I was thinking about changing the plot again.
Now it's technically a Victorian Era sitcom (and I won't actually make it accurate, me and my sister were joking about Violetta liking Britney Spears skjadh)
Here's a brief summary of the "start" of the story:
"Vinicio and Violetta are twins and they're from a wealthy family, the Bianchi, their father has a textile factory and wants Vinicio to be the heir to it, but wanting to become a writer he decides to run away and start living in a very poor part of London, where no one would find him.
One day he meets Emily and Oliver, who are orphans, the two found his house when running through the alleys near the docks, and after thinking it was abandoned, they decided to try and make that their new home. Vinicio finds them in the piano room, the children were already terrified by the thought of him kicking them out, but to their surprise, he just stares and declares that there's nothing there for them to steal, Oliver not wanting to be associated to a burglar is infuriated, but Emily, noticing that Vinicio means no harm, tries to explain why they entered his house uninvited.
After hearing their story and noticing how fragile they seemed, he leads the children to the kitchen, where he prepares a simple soup for them. Emily and Oliver do notice that his plates and silverware are really pretty and expensive looking, and both of them start speculating that he's a rich man in disguise, keeping this thought to themselves they just ask for his name.
"Leonard", he says, and nothing more. The girl could tell he was a very cold man, but more than anything, a little shy.
After finishing their lunch, they're ready to leave the house, Emily's last wish, however, is to hear the man playing the piano, Vinicio asks her what song she wanted to hear, she is reminded of when her mother used to sing for them to sleep, not knowing the name of the song, she decides to sing for the man.
As she sings the first notes, his eyes close, and sooner than expected he calls the children to the room they once were. Vinicio sits on the stool and prepares himself, playing Chopin's Nocturne opus 9, number 2. He plays with emotion, which makes the children wonder what was in his mind, this is intensified by his silence when finishing the song.
Emily thanks him, saying that if their mother was there she would have loved listening to it, and then the children decide to leave. Vinicio stops them, telling the name of the song, so that they can ask for it when they return. Both of them are surprised by what they hear, asking happily "We can return"?!, to which Vinicio confirms that yes, they can return to his house, but they need to knock before entering and don't abuse of his hospitality, he would feed them and let them sleep there, but mostly important, he would try to find a family for them, as children should not live by themselves in the streets like stray dogs. He also gives them some money, so they can go out and buy some fruits and maybe candy. They give him a big hug for his generosity, Vinicio doesn't really know how to react to this, receiving their affection with a somewhat tense body, but gives them a pat to the head, after that Emily and Oliver leave his house.
Now alone with his thoughts, the man sits in an armchair and a tad nervous, thinks about his decision, now he had some serious responsibilities, despite that, it was the right thing to do, after all, that's what Violetta would do if she was in his place".

madeline could hear the laughter and happy voices through the closed door of levi's office as they celebrated the closing of their latest deal. while she had only seen the last few weeks of their attempts to negotiate, she could tell it had stressed everyone out, especially her interim boss. while he hadn't mean or unkind, their interactions were minimal, and he was always a bit... well, curt. she was relieved at the thought that having this off his plate would make her remaining time working for him a bit more relaxed.
she offered gentle goodbyes to the other executives all as they left his office, watching as they dismissed their assistants and headed towards the parking garage. she could hear levi puttering around and she walked in quietly as she heard voices fade away down the hall behind her.
"congratulations again, levi," she smiled warmly at him. "i think i'll head home now, if that's okay?"

So my plan was originally to do these recaps every month, but that didn't happen. So instead, here's a reading recap for the first 6 months of 2024 in which I read 99 books, a concept that is still insane to me considering my goal for the year was 50. Pictured are my highlights, the god-tier books that left me screaming or the ones that I left feeling like a new person.
And here is the full list of everything I've read so far this year. (Bolded are the books pictured and italicised are books reread)

Here is my reading wrap-up of 2024! (A bit late, I know) I aimed for 20 books this year, but didn't quite make it and got stuck on 19, even though I spent the 31st of December trying to finish another book before giving up. Better luck next year! (well... this year)
Here's all the books I read, with some commentary, little reviews, fun facts, and some stats:
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller - My favourite book, this was the third time I read it. I'm going to read it again this year, now that I have the special edition hardcover I've wanted for ages.
The Color Purple by Alice Walker - I read this one because I wanted to see the new movie that released early 2024. I loved the book, but the movie was not as good.
Thrawn by Timothy Zahn - I'm not a Star Wars fan, but my sister is and she loves Timothy Zahn's books, so I read this to do her a favour. Suprisingly, I did like it, although I sometimes had to google Star Wars lore.
The T in LGBT+ by Jamie Raines - Great informative book about being trans, it's very helpful for both trans people and allies and fun to read too.
This Winter by Alice Oseman - I bought all of Alice Oseman's books after finishing Heartstopper (to fill the whole in my heart that Heartstopper left), and I wanted to read them in the order they took place, so this one comes first. The shortest book I read this year, at 102 pages.
Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe - Loved this book and Maia's story, it surprised me how much of eir experiences with gender and sexuality mirrored my own, so I learned a lot about myself too.
Solitaire by Alice Oseman - Again trying to fill that Heartstopper-shaped whole, but unfortunately this didn't do it for me and I liked it less than I thought I would.
Introducing the Ancient Greeks by Edith Hall - I had to read this for a course I took on Ancient Greek history in 2023, but I didn't finish it on time and read it in 2024 instead.
A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson Good Girl, Bad Blood by Holly Jackson As Good as Dead by Holly Jackson - Grouping together the entire series to say how much I love these books! I never expected to be so obsessed with them, but they're truly amazing. Great plots, great characters, great writing. I was reading them on the train (something I never do) because I couldn't wait to continue the story. I finished the third book in five days, even though it's over 500 pages long. 10/10, would recommend. I recently got the special edition hardcovers for my birthday and they're so pretty, I love them.
Muze, Vertel by Christiaan L. Caspers, Jacqueline Klooster, Inger N. I. Kuin, Bram van der Velden - Had to read this one for a course on Ancient Greek and Roman literature, nothing really special about it. All my classmates hated it for some reason, but I thought it was fine.
Hell Followed With Us by Andrew Joseph White - Again an unexpected favourite. It's the first horror book I've ever read, and I was wary that I wouldn't like it, since I can't handle visual horror at all, but reading it is a lot less scary that seeing it and I ended up liking this book a lot. I keep seeing Andrew Joseph White's books on here a lot, and I'm tempted to pick up Compound Fracture next.
Kill Joy by Holly Jackson - Wasn't that interested in it at first, but since I loved the main series I picked it up anyway. It was a fun, short novella, with lots of dramatic irony (my favourite)
Icarus by K. Ancrum - Loved, loved, loved this book. I'm tempted to read it again soon just to pick up on all the things I missed the first time. I bought this at the bookshop at the train station after being drawn in by the title (I'll always be a classicist at heart) and I definitely don't regret that.
Alkibiades by Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer - Suprisingly fun to read, the author is a bit infamous for writing annoyingly, but it wasn't that bad and the subject matter, the Athenian general Alkibiades (the guy who tried to seduces Sokrates), is such a vibe, so it was worth it. By far the longest book I've ever read at 960 pages, although 'only' 700 of those are the actual story and the rest is background, including 100 pages of sources (my favourite part).
The Sunbearer Trials by Aiden Thomas - A very expected favourite, I knew I would love this book the moment I picked it up at the bookstore and I was right. I waited 1,5 years to read it, because I found out after I had bought it in December 2022 that it had an sequel that would be released in September 2024, and I didn't want to read it first and then have to wait for the sequel, so I waited for the sequel and then read it. Worth the wait.
Plato's Symposium by Richard Hunter - I took a course on Plato's Symposium at university (which is a very fun text, btw) and we had to read this book. I didn't and then read the entire book in one day right before the exam. There weren't any questions about it and I very much wasted my time. I don't remember anything about this book.
Celestial Monsters by Aiden Thomas - The long-awaited sequel. Honestly, I liked the first one better, but still a fun book.
Now for some fun stats:
3 of these books I had to read for uni
3 books I read because they were in some way related to Classics
4 books I was interested in (partly) because they were about being trans/had a trans main character
5 books are non-fiction, 14 are fiction
3 books were in Dutch, 16 in English
I'd say my favourite of these books was As Good As Dead by Holly Jackson (together with the rest of the GGGtM series), I still think about that book (and especially the ending) a lot. Honorable mentions are Icarus and The Sunbearer Trials, both books I'd love to read again one day.
That was it for 2024, I hope I can read even more in 2025. What did you guys read last year?
