The word "lunatic" is so similar to "lunatyk" in my language, and "lunatyk" means someone who sleepwalks. And people used to think the moon and its phases have an effect on this condition, well especially the full moon.

And you know, you're not aware what you're doing or saying when you're in that asleep state but are walking around and might do some dumb or dangerous things. And it's kinda like Reader when their body is out there in the real world but they don't have any idea what's going on when Lunatic possesses them and then when they're back they don't remember what their body was doing the whole time. So it's kinda like they were sleepwalking.

Like Reader called them that for an entirely different reason but it's funny how it fits so well coz they're kinda like a demon that puts you into that state 😭

WAIT THATS LITERALLY SO COOL WHAT, i never realized calling them that could technically have another meaning 😭 it’s actually been super interesting to kinda see different aspects of symbolism that i didn’t even realize existed, like the one time you mentioned where a chapter pretty much only talked about the sun?? i didn’t even realize that 😭

pls i love this, the fact that their “name” can mean two different things is so neat 😭 homie is batshit insane (for good reason yknow) but also does force Reader to “sleepwalk” in a way, especially when they’re just “dreaming”/going through their memories

alright, so!

I love that our translator included an appendix at the end of each book explaining almost all of his choices and original meanings of words his readers might be unfamiliar with (that includes explaining why he translated the snitch as znicz but also what a prefect is and how much an inch is)

he kept most of the names as they were originally, just added additional explanations for context - like with Slughorn and the Slug Club (bc that was translated, so he explained where the ślimak (slug) comes from) and Sprout (bc she teaches herbology) and well, most of the names that have important meanings in english.

under "Black Syriusz" he noted that black means, well, the color black, but also that Sirius is another name of the Dog Star (also, in polish Sirius is Syriusz. not only in HP, that is how the name of the star is spelled in polish)

now with both Sprout and Black he made a mistake in the first edition of the first book (they were corrected in later editions). Sirius Black is translated literally (Syriusz Czarny) and profesor Sprout is male - bc in the first book she is mentioned only once and from that one sentence you cant conclude the gender, and he had to pick one for the translation bc polish is a very gendered language. When talking about those kind of mistakes in the appendix he stayed in character and mentioned a maltranslator spell and the publisher finding a proper counter-spell and i do find it very cute 🥹

Peeves was translated as Irytek, someone who, well, irritates. Moaning Myrthle became Moaning Marta (bc myrthle is mirt and thats a male noun, so he just picked the closes female name). Most pets' and creatures' names were either translated or explained in the appendix (ex. Banshee was translated as Szyszymora, which is a similar demon from slavic folklore).

There is one name he did translate and that is Cornelius Fudge that became Korneliusz Knot. I really like it bc now he has the same letter for an initial like many other HP characters. Knot literally means wick, like candlewick, but also something tacky. When used as a verb (sknocić coś) it means to botch, to muck something up (apparently there is an idiom to make a pig's ear of something), so its really close to one of the meanings of fudge.

The most interesting thing (I assume) are the marauders. Bc in polish translation, the map is indeed named "Mapa Huncwotów" (plural) not "Mapa Huncwota" (singular). Some people pointed out that we shouldn't refer to MWPP as the marauders bc it was "The Marauder's Map" not "The Marauders' Map". But at least in the polish translation its justified to refer to them as "Huncwoci" bc thats what the translator did.

Huncwot in polish is a mischievous person, and I feel like thats a much less negative meaning than the original word has. Tho the word is more like an equivalent, to some extend, more than an actual translation. His reasoning was that both words are from foreign languages (huncwot is from german, marauder is from french) and both arent that commonly used nowadays.

I already said what Prongs means (he included just the prongs/antlers part). Both Wormtail and Padfoot were translated quite literally - tho Łapa just means paw. I fairly recently learned that Padfoot was another name for Grim (form Yorkshire if I remember correctly)

Now. Moony. Im so jealous that its such a nice word in english. Bc in polish its Lunatyk and that means a sleepwalker. His reasoning was that it is connected to the moon (luna) and implies the night wandering. So I get it. But Moony is just so much nicer of a word.

I told Cat and Em that in the polish translation James's nickname is Rogacz. This is quite a literal translation of Prongs - literally this word would mean "someone who has horns/antlers". But the actual meaning of Rogacz - that im almost sure most children reading the books didnt know about -is "cuckold"

I saw that post circulating on my dash about people using "Siri" and "Remi" in fics and started thinking on that - given they have canon established nicknames (obviously, "Padfoot" and "Moony" with all the potential for making it "Pads" and "Moons" and whatnot) and it suddenly posed a question...

With exception of Remus, whose nickname is NOT AT ALL RELATED TO THE FACT HE CHANGES INTO A DANGEROUS AND WIDELY HATED TYPE OF CREATURE (wolf mc wolf son of wolf nick wolf), other guys supposedly came up with their nicknames after they discovered their animagus forms. Which didn't happen until fifth year.

So what did they call themselves earlier?

(note: I didn't read ATYD and I'm mainly considering the canon options ATM, but if anyone would like to enlighten me how does FANON handle pre-animagus nicknames, that would be very nice)

Hogwarts' students address themselves by last names when they're not familiar with each other (I guess that's the way to point to their posh, pureblood status more openly, lol) and with first names among friends. So... the idea of "Siri" is less improbable than you may think, since I don't suppose he would take kindly to his buddies calling him "Black" all the time.

..nah, I personally don't like "Siri" (not even because of the modern technology connection, it just doesn't look or feel right). Headcanon says: S, Big S, occasionally Princess.

Gemma calls him "that Gryffindor moron" at first, "menace" later and "love" eventually.

Remus calls him by full name up until they come up with "Padfoot", and then he uses the nickname (sometimes as "Pads") exclusively while they're not with anyone else.

As for Remus, he is always "Moony" for Marauders and on special soft occasions "Remy" for Gemma.

...on the side note, it always cracks me up that "Prongs" when translated to Polish is "Rogacz" (the one with horns), which is a phrase that was used in older times as noun for husband, whose wife has slept with another guy (effectively "giving him horns"). Other nicknames are not as bad (Padfoot is "Łapa" - "paw", Moony is "Lunatyk" - "sleepwalker", and Wormtail is "Glizdogon" which is as close to original as can possibly be), just... so sorry, Lily xD
