It would be so much easier if I had a shop that takes different kind of currencies, but these cost like a leg and a rib 🤣 Also I am so happy to hear about an interest in that store! 😭💖
Got you a slav Keith
#As a side note#I usually send things through Paczka Polska for 14 pln#only smaller things fit into letters that cost less and when they do#they can't be mixed up (like only charms with charms or prints with prints)#or else they won't fit the size (2cm flat)#but on all other shops it is also flat-rate 3-5usd/eur#my prices are as low as pp allows xdddd#the logistics of having these shops i swear#dont get me started on inventory and product limits#but im extremely happy to hear polish names and see pl addresses#i will try to add some things to the pln shop for december 👀👀#side note 2 - this keith was drawn because someone on instagram said slav cosplay#and i asked if they mean this kind of slav#true story

This is an agreement and some explanation of the shape of the exploitation, in case anyone was curious.
VFX studios, even the best of the best, work on razor-thin margins. The studio can't fuck up, the client can't change their mind midway, and the project can't go over bid (or heaven forfend push, which is so much worse) or that margin is under threat. If the margin poofs and the house can't eat the loss, they die. The good projects are the ones where the clients know what they're doing upfront enough to be decisive (hah) and ones where the clients will simply drop more money for every requested change (magical). Everything else is a crapshoot whether or not the studio is makin' money this time.
VFX artists burn out fast because this leads to production conditions not being at all healthy industry-wide. Some studios are more exploitative than others, but even the ones who start determined to do right by their employees (or are so small that they ARE their employees) are hamstrung by the industry's overall willingness to bid straight through the floor if it means Something rather than Nothing. Artists then end up either doing a lot with very little or not doing it at all and there is no in-between. There's an interplay between artist, studio, and client that contains a lot of exploitative leeway that ends up with long hours and tight deadlines and exhausted artists.
So with that in mind, add in that unions have historically been positive for the film industry's artists because of one very simple reason: there is always some bright-eyed and bushy-tailed kid who will work for chewing gum and a screen credit. Always. Exploitation is beyond easy. However, artists doing a job of work should be able to expect to be compensated fairly for the value they're providing, period and end-of. If there's no way to force the issue, to demand fair treatment and proper compensation, then anyone who does will just...be replaced. And in this instance, who is being replaced could be talking about the individual artist, absolutely, but I've seen this sentiment just as often talking about the studio itself, especially if it's small. (i.e. Small collectives of artists without bargaining power or leverage. You see their studio name in a handful of movies' credits before they dissolve.)
Honestly, though? The film industry has adapted to various bits of itself unionizing before and it will adapt again. It might just kick and scream a bit before everything settles down again.
Honestly, if CG artists unionising kills the use of CG in films, I don't see a downside.
#vfx#unions#vfx industry#unionization#I went off onto like five tangents that I then deleted#trying to talk about the history of Hollywood unionization#and the bankruptcy of Rhythm & Hues#And about Weta's VFX house's old reputation#(ie: you get to be in New Zealand! But you never get to see New Zealand.)#And how you had to be careful about the Vancouver studios#Because some of their hourly wages could be insultingly low#As in less-than-the-cost-of-living-in-Vancouver low#And how crunch time on big projects at one (now vanished) house was 100 hour weeks for MONTHS working 12s and 14s.#And how it's sometimes hard for VFX artists to have families and settle down#Because when a VFX house goes out of business they have to go where the next one sets up shop#And how the older established houses have whole different cultures because they can support longevity#The thing is that unionization needs to be the ENTIRE industry because that's really the only way
