Interested to hear your interpretation on Suburban Legends

first off the song and beat sounds so similar to mastermind and gold rush. particularly mastermind. listen to the opening seconds back to back! she sings through a lot of it similarly in my opinion

and it has some of the similar mechanics of mastermind in that it leads you to believe the song is going one way but then pulls a switcheroo on you at the end and the swell in the music aids that at the end which makes it a really sweet and emotional listening experience. i’ll get to that in a second.

i think at the beginning of taylor knowing or being aware of karlie (so like, your kitchen or mine times), this was very much the situation. karlie is in her peripheral vision (on her radar) but just as taylor described in gold rush, karlie seemed like something utterly unattainable. in lover as well we get the line “i’m highly suspicious that everyone who sees you wants you” and i think this fits with this description of karlie.

i didn’t come here to make friends echoes their entire conceit of mastermind, and a lot of the kaylor discography that uses the word ‘friend’ — another way to say “i don’t want you like a best friend” etc

also this is a sort of throwaway point but “i didn’t come here to make friends” was a 2000’s reality tv phrase that came into popularity via the show America’s Next Top Model. it was iconic and soon every competitive reality tv show under the sun had contestants saying it.. but it’s origins are from a show about models! of which karlie is one.

more importantly, the “you kiss me in a way that’s gonna screw me up forever” is like the follow up to the gold rush “eyes like sinking ships on waters so inviting i almost jump in” language. it’s cruel summer’s “snuck in through the garden gate every night that summer just to seal my fate” because falling in love with karlie lead to taylor wanting her complications too

mismatched star signs works because fire signs traditionally match best with air signs. also visually, stars mismatched fits in with mastermind’s “the planets and the fates and all the stars aligned” — things that weren’t in alignment coming into alignment.

there’s a bunch of story page chapter stuff throughout taylor’s discography, some of which makes its way into kaylor but i’d probably write for way too long so i’m just gonna skip over that for now

this part might be a bit tricky but i sort of blame it on many kaylors not talking that much about really early kaylor possibilities out of (a sort of unearned) respect and the one way street principle of staying in our lane but the idea of taylor saying “i know that when you told me we’d get back together and kissed me that you remember[ed] we were born to be national treasures” isn’t that too wild of a statement if you imagine them as maybe briefly connecting or talking at some point before taylor made her plans to make karlie hers. indeed, we know their paths crossed several times before they were first connected at the 2013 vs fashion show.

*for posterity, i included the apple music lyrics as the genius lyrics appear to be worded partially incorrectly

this is the part of the song which i just think is so beautifully done. in particular i love the “you don’t knock anymore” of it all

at first it sounds like she’s saying karlie doesn’t knock anymore because she come around anymore, or this idea of there having been a breakup or a period of not being together or something sad, which is matched by the tone of how she sings it for the first time. the waves crashing to the shore feels like a storm.

but at the end of the repetition her voice becomes more upbeat and it dawns on you, you’re like, oh wait karlie doesn’t knock anymore because she doesn’t need to knock anymore, she has a key! (“is that your key in the door?” anyone?)

and suddenly the waves meeting the shore is a pleasant image of unification and happiness. she closes with the thought “you don’t knock anymore and i always knew it” which makes it feel a bit more like mastermind’s “you knew the entire time, and now you’re mine” — always knowing they would get together, taylor always knowing karlie was the one. “and my life had been ruined” is sung in a sort of sweet resignation, one that i find throughout a lot of kaylor music, the idea that she knows its complicated but that its what she chose.

so yeah! that’s why suburban legends is a kaylor song to me 😌

Now that I'm 50 and there's no point to pretending I'm still a young person, I feel like I can admit what a lot of Gen Xrs feverishly pretend otherwise about:

We are not Early Adopter Millennials.

We are actually 20th century people. Our identity is as much a part of the late midcentury as it is the Millennium, but most importantly, upper half Gen Xrs (lower half to a much lesser extent, but still FAR more than Millennials) largely lived in a social world that had more in common with that of Jones, Boomers, even some Silents than it ever has with younger people.

It's an uncomfortable truth and there it is. I still went skating, made out on lover's lane, and hung out at the mall as a teenager. I hung out in a largely coed social group that was mixed guys and girls. I dated guys 3 years older, who had cars. And even though I came out queer later, most queer girls had my experience unless they had relatively sequestered lives.

Younger people did not do this. Also I think that older LGBT culture was far more downstream of hetero culture than modern LGBT culture is. Something about heterosexuality prior to the 2000s is that yes it was a very broad social institution and the world was largely conspiring to put people together up to a certain point. Before it stopped.

Combing my two biggest interests - The Libertines and perfume, recalling the scents which defined that era for me.

Libertine by Vivienne Westwood - Notes of Pineapple, Lily-of-the-Valley, Oakmoss, Labdanum and Musk. Released in 2000 and sadly discontinued. (A tester strip from this perfume was pasted into one of Peter’s early journals.) There are many perfumes that have had this same name since, but only one that smelled exactly like the year 2000 - mossy, earthy but soapy and clean, playful and lively, wiping off the grass stains of grunge and soaring into a new millennium, determined to cause trouble before it had consequences.

Stella by Stella McCartney - Notes of Rose Oil, Peony, Tangerine and Amber. Released in 2003. The syrupy rose jam scent of nights spent losing your mind - sleepless weekends, the eye of the storm of a cultural shift. Everything is alive, everything is exciting, everything is happening, and you can’t stop pressing your nose to your wrist, or a lover’s neck, to breathe it in, the hint of sour among all the flowers.

Prada Amber by Prada - Notes of Bitter Orange, Patchouli, Benzoin, Sandalwood, Labdanum and Tonka Bean. Released in 2004. A little sexy, a little dirty, things were getting messy. Sold via the cleanest of clean girl advertisements that were a total lie. This is the scent of a skanky cult - filthy and addictive, sweetness left on skin days after a kiss. An almost incoherent blend of vanilla and knees caked in mud - an ad for clean sheets when the bottle contains what went on between them.

Anglomania by Vivienne Westwood - Notes of Cardamom, Rose, Violet and Leather. Released in 2005 and also sadly discontinued. Where Libertine smelled of 2000 this smelled of 2005, the height of indie sleaze - leather jacket rock ‘n’ roll, hats and suits and ties and ironic nationalism, the celebration of all things British, driven at least in part by the explosion (and implosion) of The Libertines in English music and fashion culture. Weaved in with the spice of Brick Lane, the bootleg band shirts of Camden, the incense burning in the corner of your ashtray-scented flat.

Youth Dew Amber Nude by Estée Lauder - Notes of Cinnamon, Ginger, Carnation, Amber and Sandalwood. Released in 2005 and discontinued. The amber era for perfume, and the start of Tom Ford’s reign with ingenious collaborations that took dusty heritage brands into the modern age with their glamour intact in a time where we looked back to look forward. All the trash gathered up and made beautiful, injected with new life and resold at a premium. But didn’t it smell delicious, just like history, just like old money.

Belle d'Opium by Yves Saint Laurent - Notes of Jasmine, Incense, Tobacco, Peach, Rose and Patchouli. Released in 2010 (and yes, also discontinued). Rich and bold and witchy, the end of an era creeping in, all things indie drifting away, diluting but leaving their indelible mark - one last gasp of the rock star girlfriend, clad in her vintage faux furs and laddered tights, the messy glamour, the scent trail of a fearless era falling away, all those heightened, drunken memories of dollar store incense and roll-on oil remade into its final form.

I am writing an Formula 1 Bagginshield AU. It's Rivals to Lovers and FWB dynamics for a little bit. So. I have about 2000 words down, but this number is rapidly increasing. I named it "Racing Back To You", but honestly? It's a little bit cringey in my eyes.

So I will give 4 options of titles (Because I can't possibly choose). Please help!

I know some people were mildly disappointed that agatha all along wasn't more romance-centric, so if you're looking for something that is primarily a lesbian romance and secondarily an adventure, at least one example of that is the 2005 movie D.E.B.S. It's about a secret spy university taking on a master thief, but that's really a setup for the enemies to lovers storyline. Don't let the tomato meter fool you, it's a camp classic the world wasn't ready for. i'm sure the piracy savy among you can find it easily but if not it's also free on roku.

if you'd rather something darker i'd say jennifer's body is in that lane too but you probably knew about that one already. sidenote that one also has an unreasonably low tomato score because it's also a 2000s movie and the sapphic audience both of these movies were really meant for hadn't been built up yet as a demographic to market to. sad.

I think that Tim knows the entity of buddie fandom, he knows that if we go in bt as a permanent direction or if Eddie isn’t going to get out of the closet people will stop watching the show or they will watch it but illegally and they will stop talking about it on social media and stay in the buddie lane. It’s 2024, every shows and movies has queer representation. It isn’t 2000 anymore when people needed to settle for crumbs and baiting because networks were cowards. if Tim and ABC aren’t going to get us buddie, people will leave and take with them their “noise” to anothet fandom because the others are capitalizing their ship.

So Tim knows and if he decides to drop buddie then it’s because he thinks that the shows will survive without the buddie fandom. Maybe, maybe not, but the numbers will drop. People don’t like racist characters.

This reminds me of Teen Wolf. I will never forget how Jeff Davies used Derek, Styles and the Sterek fandom to gain audience then dropped them when the show was super famous to make canon is fave ship and getting sterek fandom to stop watching and in the end he had to us the sterek queerbaiting to make the people watch the last season.

It’s up to him.

I mean, I was getting teen wolf cons war flashbacks, ngl, and I did ship stydia, so I never felt the full effect of the sterek baiting, but I do remember the point of keeping Dylan and Tyler answering shit ambiguously, using both of them for promotion all around, just to get Stiles with Lydia. Then they failed to deliver stydia as canon as well and made people watch 6b by promising Tyler was gonna be in the end, that was a DIASTER, I know A LOT of people dropped the show after Tyler left because season 4 was ridiculous. The actual queerbaiting aspect of buddie can't really be called anymore, because Buck is queer, shit not going the way we want doesn't really count. BUT, to use Ryan and Oliver the way they were just to go just kidding, have this very bland queer relationship and we will make Eddie die alone, would have a lot of pushback. And again, a show is a business, and ABC clearly isn't opposed to queer relationships, and they like they glaad nominations, you should see the amount of queer people they are throwing at the wall in grey's anatomy. And Buck and Eddie could be a relationship that does not exist in media. A queer slowburn where neither of them was introduced as queer in a major network show doesn't exist. They can change the game when it comes to representation, and they have to know what will do to their numbers to be the ONE thing that had that one duo that everyone was insane about and get them together for real. Suck it up to the mcu, supernatural, teen wolf, and every other media that had that one ship that was heavily talked about but nothing came of it. I'm not kidding when I say they would be studied in media classes, because Buck and Eddie have the classic will they/won't they slowburn format, if they actually deliver, and make them The queer slowburn, that are going down in television history. Because they would be the first to pull it off. With major support. It would be so beyond stupid not to go there now. Especially since Buck is bi. They are one good push from leaving a mark on how television is made. And abc in particular because we have Oliver on record saying that Fox was blocking that, so they can just go "oh no we made sure they knew they have our full support from the start" and milk the shit out of it. Why wouldn't they go there? It would be dumb.

✎ - taste in music/literature

andies biggest taste in music is heart attack, who her best friend romeo (over at @entriprises) is the drummer for. they're mostly rock leaning and you can listen to their first album lover's lane on spotify. andie is quite the die hard fan and has been for nearly their whole existence, seeing as they started as a high school band at her school. both her and lovebug are occasionally caught by the press in the middle of their exploits and im getting a little off topic now! she's also a big fan of pop music (unsurprisingly considering everything about her). carly rae jepson, beyonce, mid 2000s / 2010s pop especially she's also a big fan of like dominic fike, post malone, bbno$. she'll go to basically anything if it's a live concert and will enjoy basically anything that she goes to see lol

for literature she doesn't read as much, partly because she doesn't have that much time for it. but she does enjoy to read anything recommended to her. it tends to be romance or ya fantasy fiction because that's what people tend to expect she'll like. but she's also read through a small collection of harry osborn's (over at @inhcritance) favorite sci fi books and i hope im remembering correctly that that is his taste in fiction

Summary: Darrell wakes up from a nightmare and Bob comforts him

The dream started the same way every time. It was the middle of June in 2000, the second race at Darlington. It was sweltering 96 degrees, meaning it would be about 116 inside the car. The stands were starting to fill with thousands of fans, excited for a day full of speed, crashes and roaring engines.

The race started out how it always did. He started in 14th but as the laps went on, he passed racer after racer. About halfway through the race, he was now 6th. He could see Strip and Dale Sr at the front battling it out with Chick right behind them. His crew chief's voice rang out through his helmet, telling him their next move.

As the red and black #8 of Dale Jr moved to the inside lane, Darrell stepped on the gas, moved the #17 upward and passed relatively new racer with ease. He then passed Billy Oilchanger when he went too high. Now he was in 4th place, just behind Strip, Dale Sr, and Chick.

"Be careful with Chick Darrell, you don't know what he could do." his crew chief warned.

"Yeah, I know."

A few seconds passed, Chick moved the bright green #86 towards the outside wall in an attempt to pass a certain black Monte Carlo with the #3 in front of him. Darrell then pressed on the gas and accelerated, getting closer and closer to the Dinoco blue #43 in front of him.

"Darrell, look out!" his crew chief's voice cut through the air with alarm.

Darrell turned his head slightly to see the bright green 86 sliding towards him. Chick's car hit the passenger side of his car, sending him sliding off the track and into the grass towards the inside wall. Darrell tried to get his car under control, but to no avail. All of a sudden, the car hit a groove in the grass, sending it airborne. The car hit the inside wall and began rolling until it came to a stop a few yards away upside down.

The caution lights came on as the camera focused on the smoking remains of the #17. Track officials and paramedics quickly made their way towards the wreck to help the driver. Since Darrell hadn't let his window net down, it was a sign that he was unconscious or injured.

The last thing Darrell was aware of was the panicked voice of his crew chief calling his name before he fell into darkness...

Darrell's eyes flew open as he gasped harshly and sat up quickly. He quickly took a few deep breaths in order to calm down his rapidly beating heart. After a few minutes, he had gotten his breathing and heartbeat under control. He looked around and saw that he was in his bedroom in North Carolina and not the track at Darlington.

The ex-racer sighed as he buried his face in his hands. He had been through many crashes in his 23 years of racing, but the one at Darlington had been the worst. Not just because of the injuries but because it proved to be his final race. And he didn't even get to finish it.

"Darrell, you ok hon?"

Darrell was snapped out of his brooding by the calming voice of his boyfriend. He turned his head and saw Bob had woken up and was looking at him with concerned blue-green eyes.

"Yeah, I'm fine Bob." Darrell said quickly as he turned away from his lover/co-worker. He then felt a firm hand on his shoulder.

"Don't do that Darrell, don't push me away." Bob said, "Tell me what's wrong."

Darrell turned back towards Bob and his brown eyes met with his boyfriend's. Bob's hand cupped the left side of Darrell's face. Darrell sighed as he knew he couldn't hide anything from Bob. There was something about the racing commentator that made him want to pour his heart out.

"I...had that dream again..." Darrell finally said as his eyes looked down, "About the race...at Darlington..."

Silence blanketed the two commentators for a few minutes before Bob spoke up again.

"C'mere." Bob pulled the ex-racer into his embrace and leaned back against the pillows with Darrell's head resting on his shoulder. He ran one hand over Darrell's graying reddish-brown hair and traced one of his right fingers over a scar on Darrell's arm that ran from his shoulder to his elbow.

Darrell sighed as he melted into his lover's arms. Bob always knew how to make him feel better. It was nights like these that made him forgot about all the bad memories and wrecks.

"I love you Bob."

"I love you too Darrell..."
