Black Sails really tapped into a very specific kind of ghost story where your ghost is not actually you but someone else's perception of you - the person they thought you were and should be. Imagine hating knitting and embrodiery, and you're no good at it, but you do it because you're a governor's wife and people expect you to be at his side, quiet with your head bowed over your needles. You buy a new wardrobe of dresses because your role necessitates it, but you keep your old clothes hidden in your rooms because you can't bear to let go of that part of you yet. And then you die and you come back as a haunting and you're faceless and voiceless, and you're wearing a dress that means nothing to you, and the only sound you can make is that of your knitting needles hitting each other again and again. And this is how the person you love brings you back: a voiceless, faceless thing in the corner.

I could write an essay about how it doesn’t make sense to assume flinthamilton would be ideologically misaligned in 1716 but instead I’ll just say this. 1705 Thomas was already a political radical, right. And got so overwhelmed at the romantic gesture of flint kicking his dad out of the house and saying his ideas were good and worth defending. that he got up and kissed him at the dinner table. Ok so after 10 years of being england’s political prisoner and medically tortured/enslaved on a penal colony bc of it. When he learns his lost love has spent the last decade waging one man war on the entire british empire in defense of his ideas and dreams and enacting diabolical grief driven revenge plots over his presumed corpse like some greek mythological romance achilles/patroclus type shit. I’m pretty sure he’d get so horny he’d pass out on the spot and give flint an aneurysm thinking he’s fr dead this time. I’ll just say that

Another thing I appreciate about Black Sails is that. They didn't randomly "make" Flint gay, or in love with another man for diversity points or whatever — which would also be fine I mean I'll take any representation, but which has a tendency feel artificial and manufactured.

Toby Stephens (James Flint) said in an interview that they told him from the beginning where they were going with James Flint's character, namely that he was in love with Thomas Hamilton. It's an integral part of the storyline and of who Flint is. So when we are shown their love for the first time in season 2 episode 5 it isn't like. A ha-ha gotcha reveal – except if you're a basic dudebro —but rather it makes all the pieces of Flint's character and of his relationship with Miranda pieces slide into place and you go "Oh. Oh. That's what it was."

AND REAL QUICK the fact that the governor (rodgers??) seeing eleanor after she dies is classic 'my dead wife haunting me' shit and it IS filmed in a REALLY cool way but hes seeing her KNITTING????? something that she has never once done in the whole show we have no reason to believe she enjoys knitting or even CAN knit and in fact probably the opposite seeing as how she didnt enjoy embroidery the one time we see her try it. hes really mourning a woman that never existed

Flint’s whole “maybe you should have been a better father to him” thing is CRAZY, but it’s worse when you realize that putting your surrogate son in a dangerous situation and letting him fall is, in fact, how fatherhood was modeled for Flint by Admiral Hennessy.
