really love dynamics that are like 'it honestly doesn't matter if you view them as romantic or platonic, the point is that they love each other. the type of love is inconsequential, all that matters is that it's there'. gotta be one of my favorite genders.

I’m finally back on Tumblr! I’m so far behind with posts on here, so I figured it to start posting again with my Black Sails art nouveau pieces about Anne Bonny and Jack Rackham, inspired by Alphonse Mucha’s Medea and Lorenzaccio. I wish to make more art nouveau pieces about this series in future! Drawn and colored in Procreate and Photoshop. Both available as prints and various merchandise on my RedBubble shop: [Anne][Jack] Instagram: [A][J] | Twitter: [A][J]

jack/anne. 500ish words. apollo and artemis with dirt in their hair
after battle they used to fuck.
this was back in the times before their world tilted slightly to the left to fit them more comfortably, when they were still fresh-faced and green with the last traces of childhood, unsure of their shapes but hungry and growing in the fertile soil of each other's negative spaces.
she wore his clothes. he'd grown his hair. they'd said they were brothers to get on the boat.
neither of them had lived this long having never seen blood, but after their first real prize they had been soaked in it, choked on it. they had seen that it could flow from ocean to ocean across the riverbed of the deck. they had learned just how much of it there could be.
who knows who reached out first. anne remembers only flashes of touch and breath and desperation; holding jack against the floorboards behind a stack of barrels in a rocking room now half-empty with with half-sober sailors, fumbling with shaking hands to slip inside each other’s clothes to check for signs of breath and heat and beating hearts.
here, jack’s soft hands digging into the flesh of her waist where a mountainous man had clutched and tossed her against the taffrail. there, anne's open mouth blessing the place where he had almost been pierced through the heart.
the room smelled of rum and rust. outside it was raining.
she remembers only that jack was grimy and sticky and bleeding from his arm and so, so warm with a lust for life that anne had wanted, since the moment she first saw him with the knife in his hand and her husband's hair in his fist, to steal from him and swallow whole. that the first time she ever killed she had killed six men. that in the middle of battle she had looked across the deck and seen him witness the moment she acquired a taste for slaughter, mouth open and eyes shining, and she had known, then, that she was going to fuck him.
she could tell that he had never fucked before. she decided that neither had she. jack had cried.
she remembers that it had been clumsy and humid and natural, like how blind newborn things know to seek survival in each other's warmth. that it had been painless and good. like warm bread when hungry. like soft beds when tired. like her own hands in total privacy.
no one yet knew anne wasn't a boy. they had had to be as quiet as the dead bodies above. and he'd licked the palm of her hand and she had bitten his.
when she came she pressed her bloody fingers into his mouth like james bonny used to do, until he gagged and she was done, and instead of biting down jack had sucked them clean and moved onto the next pair.
and his eyes were huge and dark with fear and something bigger than fear, something anne couldn't put her finger on, between terror and thrill.

No but listen LISTEN….. I can’t stop thinking about how they could—and SHOULD—do a one-off spinoff series just of these two, their exploits with Mark/Mary, how Anne uses her experiences with Max to navigate a new kind of intimacy with Jack, how she reacts to being pregnant (it’s canon!!), how the three of them get captured, the tragedy of Jack’s execution, Anne’s extended imprisonment, the birth of her….. son?? It’s not known to history what actually became of Anne but WHAT IF she escapes the prison with her baby, makes her way back to Philly, and solicits help from Granny Guthrie to help her start a new life in the Colonies with her son (whom she names Jack, of course)? The series could also be interspersed with flashbacks of Anne’s early life and how she first came to meet Jack when she was 13. Ahhhhhhhhhhh

I just binged all of “Black Sails” and as far as I’m concerned the show was about THEM…..

man saves girl from something awful, takes her under his wing while simultaneously leading them both down a dark and dangerous road until she’s turned into the perfect cold blooded murderer, eventually realizing that she’s stuck in a life she didn’t choose for herself but can’t bring herself to fully abandon because she does actually love the man and they have a complicated platonic soulmate/eternal sibling bond going on where they would do anything to protect the other.

Head: The first time he shows his affection by gently placing a kiss to the top of her head, he half expects Anne to bite off his; so Jack can’t be blamed when he huffs in surprise as she leans into it, closing the space between them.

50 random snippets that peer into Jack and Anne's fascinating relationship in the link above. That's it.

PEOPLE
remember when Charles Vane said, “you either gonna be the death of each other or we’ll all end up working for you one day” about Anne Bonny and Jack Rackham?
he was right.
they all ended up working for them one day.

I’m rewatching Black Sails (FINALLY, it’s been years since I saw a whole episode from beginning to end) and I don’t know how far I’ll get or if I’ll post every time, but these are things that popped into my mind today. You’re welcome to comment, etc!
Black Sails, episode I
- Why DID the cook on Parrish’s ship take that page? How did he know to take it? What was he to Parrish, that he knew what was on that page? He definitely did Parrish dirty, I think Flint may have tried to get him spared if the page had been there.
- I’d completely forgotten that the pirates used psychological warfare in the form of howls and chanting when boarding a ship. Very cool, and now I wanna hear Flint do it.
- I still think it’s funny people (me included) thought Silver stabbed that cook in the back (it’s what we expect of him), but a closer look at the scene reveals that the blade went through his chest and is poking out of his back.
- Flint’s authority, or lack thereof. It just boggles my mind that this clever, clever and really charismatic man is also COMPLETELY STUPID when it comes to knowing what a crew (and people in general) needs and how quickly they will turn on someone. He’s chasing this Urca dream and letting it consume him entirely, which is why Singleton of all people gets to do the recruiting. Flint can’t manage people. He’s great at the big monologues but he’s so awful at the day-to-day relationship stuff that you wonder how he survived so far (Gates. the answer is Gates).
- Gates only lets Singleton recruit one person, and that person’s Silver. Silver, who GATES found and whom Gates obviously suspects of having murdered the cook. Did they really need a cook more than the carpenters etc Singleton had convinced? Doubtful. Gates wanted to recruit the one guy he might hold some power over. (btw have I mentioned that I love Gates? ngl he was my main reason for persevering in my first watch of the show; he’s just a joy to watch)
- Silver seems so happy and relieved when he finds out that Nassau isn’t, in fact, English soil. This could very well be a clue about his past and what he thinks of the English government (and/or all “civilised” countries perhaps).
- Billy. Look I really like Billy and there’s so many important things about this character already put in place in this ep. He’s a foil to Flint, incredibly loyal and honest where Flint is shown to be an liar and to not care at all about the crew. This episode starts the process of “Breaking Billy”, where he’s forced to go against his principles and lie for Flint - and it’s unclear if he does it because he thinks this is the best for the crew, or because Flint scares him shitless, or even out of loyalty to Gates.
- Flint’s speech when he accuses Singleton of lying is like a scene out of a play, and I think this is 100% on purpose. After having been completely at wit’s end, Flint finally gets an idea and steps onto a stage where he’s suddenly very persuasive. This says a lot about who he really is: he generally fails to capture the crew’s loyalty, to persuade Richard Guthrie to help him or to convince Billy that he’s not actually completely nuts. However, he’s incredibly good at scripting a scenario and putting on a big show, playing its main character. I’m fairly sure (though again, I need to rewatch) that all of Flint’s most persuasive moments are staged and scripted - he’s not just playing a role, he needs to take time/thought to write himself that role.
- Speaking of roles, this convo between Rackham and Anne, after they kill part of Flint’s crew: R: "we all have our roles to play" A, seizing him by the groin: "I wanna fuck" R: "what, because of what I just said?" A: "fuck's it matter to you". Wow okay I had completely blanked out on this, but it’s so obvious now.
- The Vasquez story. A dying Spaniard, stabbed by his own government because he tried to warn them off a project, seeks revenge by giving an English captain the coordinates to an immeasurable treasure. Is it me, or is there a Treasure Island reference here? An old dying Flint gave Billy Bones the map to Skeleton Island in TI. What was his motivation? Also some kind of revenge? Hmm.

I still find myself thinking about Anne Bonny’s sexuality in Black Sails. And I still see people claiming it’s biphobic to call her a lesbian and homophobic/lesbophobic for calling her bi.
...But isn’t her sexuality just an example of something that is simultaneously both and neither? Like it’s so fluid and there are so many exceptions that it’s pointless to add labels. Her platonic, sexual, and romantic relationships with Jack and Max is what completes her.
(It also parallels Flint’s relationships in a way. I don’t feel we talk about how this show is so amazing for poly rep and people get hung up on labels.)
