“Lower Decks was made by people who hate Star Trek”

No, lower decks was made by people who love Star Trek enough to make an entire show about everything Star Trek is, to put in references to episodes that barely anyone knows about, to watch all of Star Trek enough to know every stereotype and running gag in the fandom, and to still make the show able to stand on its own 2 feet.

They put in a reference to the animated series episode “the infinite Vulcan” where Spock is cloned to be a massive Vulcan, they put in a reference in the comics about “The way to Eden” in their first edition, these are people who care about Star Trek enough to find every nook and cranny of it, and create a likeable show about it.

I am also a firm believer that if you truly like a show, you are able to point out that it does have flaws, and to accept that, and I feel that lower decks does that perfectly. It shows that your little perfect Star Trek show has flaws and inconsistencies, but shows that you can still enjoy watching the show, as well as you can fix those mistakes or just have it be funny.

I really like lower decks. 🫠

I know classic Star Trek always had a mix of serious business and wacky shenanigans, but I don't know if anything will ever beat the seesaw of earnestness and ridiculousness that was Deep Space Nine season six?

ep 8: Kira must confront her dead boyfriend's doppelganger from another universe

ep 9: the neurodivergent breakfast club, starring Bashir

ep 10: the Ferengi Comic Relief Brigade have to do a Weekend at Bernie's with a POW they killed by accident

ep 11: Ben Sisko is injured and trapped in a cave with his self-declared archnemesis who goes violently insane while hallucinating and ranting about his intention to commit genocide

ep 12: Quark goes on a treasure hunt but the real treasure was here inside Morn's colon all along

ep 13: a Black science fiction writer struggles with systemic racism and police brutality in 1950s America and the entire show might be a dream he's having

The show actually did a really good job of setting up the possibility of Annabeth as the traitor, especially for a kids' show. Like, while we book readers were having meltdowns over the first "Seaweed Brain" show-watchers only were probably prepping for Annabeth to betray Percy.

The rivalry between Poseidon and Athena, discussed during the encounter with Medusa? The whole "Be careful, I think you almost called me a friend," under the arch? The way Annabeth shut off the Iris message with Luke abruptly while they were discussing the traitor? Annabeth's great regret holding her back in the underworld?????

Like, I bet a lot of show watchers were genuinely shocked when Annabeth wasn't the traitor, and even more shocked when they found out it was Luke.
