Big Ups to the bro AUSTIN CRUTE, currently crackin the planet tfu in the most critically-acclaimed film currently in theaters, “Booksmart.” We’ve been on the Crute fan-wagon for a lot of years now, dating back to his early years as a high school Musical Theatre standout. His mind-blowing range as an artist and performer is slowly being revealed to the public… and the revelation is taking place in some of the most lauded work of our generation. His credits are only beginning to fill his resume, but they already include multi-award-winners @Atlantafx (as Black Bieber) Orange is the New Black, and now his big screen debut in Booksmart. The upward trajectory is still mad strong as he is currently wrapping production on his starring role in the highly anticipated @Netflix series “Daybreak” - showing even more range as he stretches from Booksmart’s drama queen to Daybreak’s Bullying Football Jock. - But his range isn’t limited to screen appearances. His skills as a producer/songwriter are some of the best (& most slept on) in the industry. As a recent graduate of the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at NYU’s Tisch School of Music his already mind-blowing production skills are now locked and loaded. I’ve long been a fan of his unique work, which I’ve dubbed “Intellitrap” for its of-the-moment litness blended with highly skilled musicality and innovative composing choices. THE AFTERGLOW - random little gifts that were dropped on us during the holiday rush which deserve a second look. Like this candid performance by LoJoFav JAI’LEN JOSEY! We’ve been shouting about the amazing skills of Jai’len Josey since she first lit up our radar screen as a 15-year-old powerhouse from Atlanta. Her natural blend of musical theatre storytelling skills, supernatural vocal range, and vast storehouse of pop culture vocal stylings made it clear to us we were witnessing the beginnings of a true Broadway star. We were thrilled, but not surprised, when she ended up on the Broadway stage this past year at age 18, originating the role of “Pearl Krabs” in the Tony nominated “Best Musical,” “SpongeBob SquarePants” delivering a show-stopper. (literally… the flow of the show was paused each night for wild applause after her performance o, “Daddy Knows Best.”) Her down-to-earth, relaxed vibe almost seems at odds with her hurricane-force vocal abilities. On the surface, this lil vid she dropped in the days before Christmas seems like one of a thousand other “lemme sing a quick Christmas jam for the gram” joints that flooded my timeline. But I KNEW from experience that she would nail the emotional high point (& high note) of ‘O Holy Night” even in this candid, casual setting. But the unexpected riff that follows hints that slaying the “highest possible note” isn’t as high as Jai’len can go. Definitely a metaphor for her career. Breakout Broadway premiere in a multi Tony-nominated musical at age 18? We’ll call that her FIRST step. NEWS FROM VAIL … The Vail International Dance Festival is always giving us unexpected surprises, especially from our Memphis Jookin fam - but leave it to Phyouture to blow up the whole “unexpected” game… with an emergency appendectomy! We got word that the surgery went as smoothly as P’s glides and he’s on his way to a quick recovery.
