NAME DROP NINTH (yeah, its a thing) We all have those moments when someone we highly respect interacts with us in some small way and gives us that lit feeling of motivation like nothing else can. We want to run tell everyone about it but, at least here in the midwest, naw, you don’t brag on yourself & drop names so we tend to lessen it in our minds to keep our egos in check. Well F that lessening. I’ve given myself and ANYONE ELSE permission to name drop on the ninth and nineteenth of the month! Just cause, dammit! hahaha #NDN!!! So yeah…I was told that Chad Hugo (Pharrell’s other half in The Neptunes / N.E.R.D.) said I was good producer who really knew what he was doing. hahaha. Yup, its the little things. The info was relayed to me by Tulsa’s genius emcee Johnny Polygon. He was signed to DJ Green Lantern and was working with Chad and Pharrell on several projects. I produced a track for JP and Amanda Diva (of Floetry) called “Blvd Broad” for his “Rebel Without Applause” album. a track which brought together Sergei Rachmaninoff, Miles Davis against a 90’s Neo Soul beat. The result was a wavvy kind of narrative joint that had a touch of moody theatricality to it. (Thats how we do round here, ya know.) NAME DROP NINTH (Yeah, it’s a thing.) So THIS is one for the books! Last week I was in the middle of creating a dope new character and storyline for a hush-hush musical theatre project we’re developing. I usually write with a “star” in mind so the level of my writing is the best it can be, fully realizing the chances of getting that star to play the role isn’t a realistic possibility. As I was writing it became clear that there aren’t a lot of performers with the skill set to pull off the wide range of acting and dancing required to make this role crackle. By writing so specifically for this performer I may be writing myself into a major casting problem. I was LITERALLY in the middle of writing this role when a message came from THAT performer asking if I’d be interested in helping him out with some graphics on his very dope personal project. Note, I’ve never met or even had a conversation with this guy. He had no clue I was developing a project…let alone a project tailored specifically to him… he wasn’t even aware that I’m a musical playwright. He only knew me through my artwork and that I’d been following and supporting his career for many years. So I’m in the middle of developing the artwork on his project (he’s a great person out of the spotlight and the collabo process is smooth and easy.) and i’ll be pitching the project to him in the coming weeks. Not sure if the planets will continue to align for us and if he’ll be the one to originate this role or not, but this is the first time this kind of divine-intervention-esque coincidence has happened to me on this level. So I’ll continue to let my magical thinking run wild on this one. hahaha. NAME DROP NINTH - SZA & KENDRICK LAMAR (#NDN, Yeah, it’s a thing.) So a couple weeks ago I knocked out a quick job for SZA & KENDRICK LAMAR's label TOP DAWG ENTERTAINMENT. (hahaha All caps since I don't know if I'll ever type this sentence again. ) Yup. The truth is more mundane tho...lol... I've been up to my frontal fontanelle in LoJoWerk, with wildly shifting “HotFoot” deadlines and new opportunities for "Roofless" and our new works-in-progress. I had an unexpected 10-day break after a shoot date got delayed so I decided to catch up on freelance jobs & try to get some posts prepared for our sorely-update-deficient social media sites. Then an original LA Roofhead hit me up for some graphic design help on a video treatment he needed to submit ASAP. I've had an on-going barter relationship with this brother since 2004 so I did a little bit of quick clean up and visual redesign on the treatment in exchange for some shooting space access in LA. And that's that. SZA. KENDRICK LAMAR. NIKE. AIR JORDON. My year of "clients" lol ...all for barter and without leaving Oklahoma. Multi-Award-Winning writer/director Paul Haggis, the only screenwriter to ever win “Best Screenplay” Oscars back to back, (Clint Eastwood helmed “Million Dollar Baby” and “Crash” which Mr. Haggis also directed,) has written some of my favorite films and lives a life of philanthropic service that even deepens my respect. And you’re probably aware of my equal admiration for Malachi Kirby. My posts are rarely seen by more than 100 people, and i wasn’t even following Mr. Haggis at the time, so this was really out of the blue; I’m still not even sure how he came across the post. I am thrilled that these two great men, masters of their respective crafts, intersected in our tiny little cyber backyard! The Reality TV storyweavers of VH1's "Signed" have been playing LoJoFav Devon suspiciously close to the vest in the first 2 episodes, barely letting his shine creep through the cracks in the contentious-heavy plot points. But if you recognize his one-in-a-million level of talent you probably realize they're holding him like an Ace in their hand as the 8 episodes continue to play out. By the way...
