Lmaooooo jvp got caught for fraud
Tumblr media
Essentially there was a covid relief fund which non profits engaged in political activies could get money from once, but not a second time like other people and non political non profits could. But jvp applied a second time and actively lied about what they do so they could get it a second time.
"At the time it applied for the second draw PPP loan, A Jewish Voice for Peace certified to its lender and the SBA in the loan application that it was “not a business concern or entity primarily engaged in political or lobbying activities, including any entity that is organized for research or for engaging in advocacy in areas such as public policy or political strategy or otherwise describes itself as a think tank in any public documents.” It further certified in the loan forgiveness application that it met the conditions for receiving the second draw PPP loan. The investigation revealed that A Jewish Voice for Peace was primarily engaged in political activities."

Thank you for applying for a library card!
We are a large metropolitan library with twelve branches here in the city and a consortial agreement with ninety-seven different timelines (and counting). Your card is your ticket to our physical and digital collections, where we have something for everyone.
You’ve indicated that you are licensed for time travel and regularly travel in time or between timelines for work purposes, so you are eligible for our trans-timeline borrower’s card. Please read this document carefully to ensure you’re using your new card to its fullest potential and in compliance with library policy.
Our services:
The library has a floating collection, meaning items remain at the branch where they were returned rather than being sent back to the lending branch. However, we do return inter-timeline loans to their home universe to minimize temporal strain. If you’re browsing the shelves and see a book phasing in and out of existence, alert an employee. It’s probably misshelved.
Our new online system allows you to keep the same login information in all timelines. No more keeping track of dozens of passwords! If you previously created multiple logins tied to one card, visit the circulation desk, and we’ll merge your accounts for you. No, this will not make you responsible for alternate selves’ outstanding fines, and any version of yourself telling you that is lying to you.
You asked, and we listened. Our new online catalog displays reviews from patrons from all relevant timelines on items exceeding a 90% similarity score. We request that patrons keep debates over the superiority of their timeline’s version to venues other than our catalog.
Although our staff members are not medical professionals, they have been trained to recognize signs of temporal instability. If you are experiencing characteristic symptoms (faintness, disorientation, physical and/or mental age changes, etc.), a staff member can administer grounding agents until emergency services arrive.
The library has a robust inter-timeline loan system. If you’re looking for a book or article not published in this timeline, fill out our online form or ask at the circulation desk. The average wait time for an ITL request is five business days. That’s shortened to three if you’re requesting an item stored at the James Patterson Interdimensional Warehouse. (Note: This estimate may change as the warehouse continues to expand under its own power, or if our courier gets lost there.)
Our policies:
We do not accept returns before the publication date (month and year). Cataloging books paradoxically created through stable time loops gets too complicated. You can check a book’s month of publication in a review journal like Booklist, which we make available online and in our non-circulating magazine collection.
We’ve recently gone fine-free in this timeline, meaning we no longer charge fees for overdue books. This policy varies between consortium timelines depending on whether certain people on the board of directors have retired yet.
If a book is damaged beyond repair, lost in a Time Hole, or overwritten out of existence by timeline changes, you will be responsible for the replacement cost or a flat fee of $30, whichever is lower. We do not recommend attempting to rewrite time to avoid losing or damaging the book, as we would prefer to purchase a new copy rather than tear a hole in the fabric of reality.
Patrons may use our computers for two hours. You can extend this time if there are no other patrons waiting. Show respect to other library users and do not abuse time travel to circumvent the policy when there is high demand. We will notice if there are two of you at our computing stations. Yes, even if one of you is wearing a funny hat.
The library values your privacy. We will not disclose account information or the content of reference transactions to anyone, including alternate versions of the account holder. The library also does not keep a record of the materials you check out. However, some of our databases do track user data. If you need to conceal your presence in this timeline to avoid paradoxes, the Time Cops, or your ex, we keep a collection of electronic resource licenses at the reference desk so you can judge which products to avoid.
Holder vs. Holder found that copyright protections extend across timelines and prior to publication, and copyright is exclusive to the iteration who created the work. Patrons attempting to copy library materials and publish them under their own name will have their cards revoked, even if they created the material in another timeline. This policy was adopted after consultation with our legal team. Trans-timeline copyright enforcement is very aggressive.
The library respects the personhood and autonomy of patrons no matter their timeline of origin. However, this respect is not always universal. If you need to know what the laws are for time travelers/alternate selves/dimension-hoppers/“timeclones”/etc. in this dimension (or the terminology used to refer to them), stop by the reference desk.
Violence is against library policy. If you are about to battle your alternate self from another timeline because you ran into each other in the cookbook section, take it to the parking lot.
In conclusion:
Libraries are committed to free access to information, and with the resources of dozens of timelines available to us, our mission has only gotten bigger. In fact, we’re hiring! If you’re looking for somewhere new to apply your time travel certification, we’re looking for team members in our inter-timeline loan department. Entry-level courier positions do not require an MLIS. Familiarity with James Patterson is a plus.
We can’t wait to see you in our library. (Maybe we already have.)

In the gift shop of the modern art museum, Stacey thought it would be a funny joke to buy one of the artsy jock straps for her boyfriend Jake from the exhibit "Jock Up!" The photographer and sculptor had a large collection of muscular men all wearing custom jock straps that he had designed. Jake was unamused, "I'm not wearing that thing, sorry..."
A week later, while her boyfriend was on a hunting trip with his friends, Stacey received a letter in the mail with a photograph.
"Thank you for contributing to the traveling exhibition "Jock Up!" Your boyfriend Jake will be included in our upcoming exhibit next month. Please enjoy these complimentary prints documenting your contribution."
There in the photos was Jake, stripped nude except for the jock strap and one of his camo hunting caps. His once average body was beefed up, waxed, and manicured into perfect masculine form.
Stacey called Jake's friends, who said that he never showed up and never replied to texts or phone calls. She called the gallery and they said that Jake was on loan for up to three years. After that point, he would be returned or placed in the permanent collection if she chose to accept the large cash payment. Stacey visited the exhibit again later and saw Jake's impressive body in photos and a life size mannequin-like sculpture. When she saw the price tag that she'd receive if she donated him permanently, she ultimately decided to take the money.

Taken from u/Visual_Industry_ on Reddit
First, know that *they* are silencing news about protests. We are not laying down. You can find community, resources, and protest events against Donald J Trump, Elon Musk, and their administration on the 50501 subreddit.
Next, if you are, for any reason, unable to make a demonstration, please call your representatives. Call your senators, congresspeople, and anyone in the White House. Contact your governor's office as well. Use this resource sheet for more information.
Finally, send the following letter template aand share the above links around at the very least. I copied and edited this one from u/Die_of_beaties. Hell, you can copy/paste this entire blog onto yours. Get word out. Do demonstration, call, and even email if you can.
But share links and send emails at the very least. Here is the template. Change and edit information as needed.
Congressman/Congresswoman/Senator/Governor _______,
I write to you as a citizen of your district/state/precinct.
I and my community have grave concerns that President Donald J. Trump's excessive abuse of power within only two weeks holding this prestigious office demonstrates nothing less than an overwhelming and blatant disregard for our Government, our Democracy, and the democratic process. It is a budding display of despotism with a tyrant's actions and words, not an American president's. He and his administration, including 'special government employee' Elon Musk, show zero honor for the Constitution upon which this great country was built.
Yet, we are to trust that he and his administration will faithfully uphold the Constitution? I'd like to outline a few specific instances of particular concern:
1. The memo freezing federal grants and loans:
He overreached and abused his power via this unconstitutional act. Federal spending power belongs to Congress, not the president.
2. Birthright citizenship removal:
This attempt violates both The Bill of Rights and The Constitution, two documents upon which this nation was founded, built, and grown. This attempt shows that he disrespcts each and that he cares nothing about his presidential duty to uphold and defend these documents, what they stand for, and who they protect. He, therefore, shows no regard for the United States of America. And I fear this disrespect and disregard can and will go further.
3. Emoluments Clause violations:
He launched a crypto currency which directly violates the Emoluments Clause. This president Donald J. Trump (and potentially his family or beneficiaries) profit directly from his position and crypto currency to the tune of a few billion (at least). I, personally, have no issues with crypto in itself. I do take issue with an already proven shady public figure profiting via difficult-to-track means by which he could easily send and receive funds or bribes from potentially dangerous foreign entities. He also stated he would do so to varying degrees during his campaign. These actions require a thorough and unbiased investigation from those who are not tied to or purchased by him.
4. Public comments about "rigging" or "stealing the election":
He and his associate Elon Musk publicly made comments suggesting that they may rig the election against the voters leading up to Election Tuesday on November 5th 2024. This point should have already been acted upon via a federal investigation of all parties involved, Elon Musk in particular. The time-sensitive data of voting records demanded and continues demanding such urgent attention.
5. Repeated discussion surrounding the use of political violence:
Donald J. Trump and some of his associates repeatedly spoke of using political violence and/or blood shed so that he may forgo American political procedures and have his way once he got in office for this particular term. He used such verbiage against former NIAID director Anthony Fauci, former national security adviser John Bolton, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and Pompeo's top aide Brian Hook. These individuals received death threats against their persons and families once President Donald J Trump stripped them of their security and protections. Donald J Trump also threatened them about social media posts (specifically in the same manner and to the same audience as the January 6th insurrection, including the violent criminals he personally pardoned in said insurection). If another president or government official made similar statements, let alone carried them out, they would certainly face almost immediate criminal charges reaching levels akin or equal to domestic terrorism. President Donald J Trump should not be exempt from such swift action either.
6. Threats against long-standing American allies:
Donald J Trump also threatened long-standing allies, like Mexico, Canada, and Denmark, with either conquest or seizure of land via military action. Our allies did not provoke these statements. He is currently transforming our peaceful borders into hostile territory and beloved allies into potential enemies. I can only think that he does this purely for bombast and ego. No logical human being of sound mind who cares about other citizens would act in such a way.
7. Undermining the First Amendment on The Bill of Rights:
Donald J Trump took bribes from, sued, and threatened with violence opposing journalists, news organizations, social media platforms, and average individuals for speaking up about or reporting on things that don't shine him in a flattering light, including all of the above. He proves time and time he doesn't care to uphold nor honor the Bill of Rights.
Not one of the listed actions come from a true American president but a rising Dictator and Tyrant. Congress has explicitly defined three forms of misconduct as grounds for impeachment;
• “Improperly exceeding or abusing the powers of the office” (First, Second, and Seventh instance above)
• “Behavior incompatible with the function and purpose of the office” (Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth instance above)
• “Misusing the office for an improper purpose or for personal gain.” (Third instance above)
In the instances listed, Donald J Trump explicitly violated each and every one of these definitions.
We hold you and your cohorts as our elected representatives to stand in defense of our democracy, our government, and the United States of America. Push for the proper investigations, trials, and impeachment of Donald J Trump and his party. The inaction we have seen over the last 4 years regarding this man has been unacceptable. Unprecedented happenings require unprecedented and urgent actions before it is too late.
Respectfully,
_______

John Knefel at MMFA:
A new memo issued by the Trump administration directing the federal government to temporarily cease disbursing billions of dollars in funds appears to draw on arguments made by Russ Vought, the president’s selectee to run the Office of Management and Budget. Vought was a primary architect of Project 2025, a sprawling effort organized by The Heritage Foundation to provide policy and staffing recommendations for President Donald Trump’s second term. In addition to that role, Vought is also the founder of the Center for Renewing America, a MAGA-aligned think tank that has spent over a year arguing that the president can unilaterally refuse to spend funds allocated by Congress, an authority known as the impoundment power that was severely curtailed by Congress in 1974.
The new Trump administration memo was issued by Matthew Vaeth, acting director of OMB pending Vought’s confirmation vote. The document calls for federal agencies to “temporarily pause all activities related to obligation or disbursement of all Federal financial assistance.”  “The use of Federal resources to advance Marxist equity, transgenderism, and green new deal social engineering policies is a waste of taxpayer dollars that does not improve the day-to-day lives of those we serve,” the memo states. Although the two-page memo doesn’t use the term impoundment, law professor Steve Vladeck argued that the Trump administration is claiming “the unilateral power to at least temporarily ‘impound’ tens of billions of dollars of appropriated funds—in direct conflict with Congress’s constitutional power of the purse, and in even more flagrant violation of the Impoundment Control Act of 1974.” The existence of the document was first reported by journalist Marisa Kabas and later confirmed by The Washington Post and The New York Times. (OMB issued a follow-up memo claiming the freeze does “not apply across-the-board” and withheld funds are “not an impoundment under the Impoundment Control Act.”)
The direct effects of the memo are unknown given its scope and vagueness, but they could be detrimental even if the pause is short-lived.
“Experts said the memo as written was poised to bring a rapid halt to scores of federal functions, from assistance to homeless shelters to financial aid for college students,” the Post reported. “Health grants distributed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and state aid for disaster reconstruction, might face delays.” The memo appears to exempt Social Security and Medicare recipients, and it says the halt “does not include assistance provided directly to individuals.” It isn’t clear whether Medicaid recipients will be affected, although some early reports indicated that payments had been disrupted.
Project 2025 architect Russ Vought had his handprints all over the federal funding freeze.

October 11th 1297 was the date of the letter from William Wallace to the mayor of Lübeck.
Today in 1297 a letter from Sir William Wallace and Sir Andrew Moray to the mayors of Lübeck and Hamburg was drawn up, saying that "The Kingdom of Scotland has, by God's Grace, recovered by battle from the power of the English".
This is a remarkable piece of history, and I am honoured to have seen it in person when it was on loan to Scotland a few years ago.
The Lübeck letter was first discovered preserved in the Lübeck archives in the 1820s. It was often mentioned in books thereafter. In 1942, Lübeck, on the Baltic coast of Germany, was attacked by Allied aircraft. As a result, the town's archives, including the letter, were moved to a saltmine for safety. At the end of the war, the Soviet army took the papers east. The archives were later handed over to the archive administration of East Germany, but the medieval documents were not among the records. It was assumed that they had been lost.
In the 1970s Lübeck documents were found in the archives of the USSR. In 1990, after some negotiation, the town's medieval records, including Wallace and Murray's letter, were returned to Lübeck.
There have been calls for the letter to be returned to Scotland, whereas it would be nice to have it to display in one of our museums I think it is as much a piece of Lübeck's history as ours, and also as recipients of the letter it is rightfully there property.
Originally, there were two letters; one to Lübeck and one to Hamburg. The contents were identical and the letters were scribed within a month of the Scots’ success at Stirling Bridge.
The translated letter reads......
"Andrew de Murray and William Wallace, leaders of the army of the kingdom of Scotland, and the community of the same kingdom, to their worthy, discreet and beloved friends the mayors and communes of Lübeck and Hamburg, greeting, and increase always of sincere friendship.
It has been intimated to us by trustworthy merchants of the said kingdom of Scotland that you by your own goodwill are giving counsel, help and favour in all causes and business concerning us and our merchants, although our merits had not deserved this, and therefore all the more are we bound to you to give you thanks and a worthy recompense, to do which we are willing to be obliged to you; and we ask you that you will make it be proclaimed amongst your merchants that they can have secure access to all ports of the kingdom of Scotland with their merchandise since the kingdom of Scotland, thanks be to God, has by arms been recovered from the power of the English. Farewell.
Given at Haddington in Scotland on the 11th day of October in the year of grace one thousand two hundred and ninety seven.
We request moreover that you will see fit to forward the business of John Burnet and John Frere, our merchants, just as you wish us to forward the business of your merchants. Farewell. Given as before."
Significantly, the letter carries the only known impression of William Wallace's personal seal, which shows the Scottish Lion Rampant on the front and on the reverse, a strung bow with a protruding arrow. The inscription appears to read ‘William, son of Alan Wallace’, which is interesting in relation to determining just who Wallace was exactly. An Aleyn Waleys – described as ‘tenant le Roi du counte de Are’ – signed the 1296 ‘Ragman Roll’ and he is quite possibly William Wallace’s father.
Another thing about the letter is the fact that Moray is involved with it, Andrew de Moray was, in the North of Scotland every bit as important as Wallace, history tells us that he was wounded at Stirling Bridge and died of his wounds in November so how involved in this was he?, if I had a time machine I would use it to learn more about Wallace and Moray.
This is a great piece of history and as I said earlier, I would love it to be part of our archives and on display in a museum, but it is the property of the people of Lübeck and we as a nation are grateful that they lend it to us on occasion.

Oversight, Judiciary, and Ways and Means Committees Release Report on Impeachment Inquiry Finding Joe Biden Has Committed Impeachable Conduct
Below are key findings from the impeachment inquiry report. The 291 page report can be found below.
From 2014 to the present, as part of a conspiracy to monetize Joe Biden’s office of public trust to enrich the Biden family, Biden family members and their associates received over $27 million from foreign individuals or entities. In order to obscure the source of these funds, the Biden family and their associates set up shell companies to conceal these payments from scrutiny. The Biden family used proceeds from these business activities to provide hundreds of thousands of dollars to Joe Biden—including thousands of dollars that are directly traceable to China. While Jim Biden claimed he gave this money to Joe Biden to repay personal loans, Jim Biden did not provide any evidence to support this claim. The Biden family’s receipt of millions of dollars required Joe Biden’s knowing participation in this conspiracy, including while he served as Vice President.
Joe Biden used his status as Vice President to garner favorable outcomes for his son’s and his business partners’ foreign business dealings. Witnesses acknowledged that Hunter Biden involved Vice President Biden in many of his business dealings with Russian, Romanian, Chinese, Kazakhstani, and Ukrainian individuals and companies. Then-Vice President Biden met or spoke with nearly every one of the Biden family’s foreign business associates, including those from Ukraine, China, Russia, and Kazakhstan. As a result, the Biden family has received millions of dollars from these foreign entities.
The Biden family leveraged Joe Biden’s positions of public trust to obtain over $8 million in loans from Democratic benefactors. Millions of dollars in loans have not been repaid and the paperwork supporting many of the loans does not exist and has not been produced to the Committees. This raises serious questions about whether these funds were provided as gifts disguised as loans.
Under the Biden Administration, the Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) afforded special treatment to President Biden’s son, Hunter Biden.Several witnesses acknowledged the delicate approach used during the Hunter Biden case, describing the investigation as “sensitive” or “significant.” Evidence shows that Department officials slow-walked the investigation, informed defense counsel of future investigative actions, prevented line investigators from taking otherwise ordinary investigative steps, and allowed the statute of limitations to expire on the most serious felony charges. These unusual—and oftentimes in the view of witnesses, unprecedented—tactics conflicted with standard operating procedures and ultimately had the effect of benefiting Hunter Biden.
The Biden Justice Department misled Congress about the independence of law enforcement entities in the criminal investigation of Hunter Biden. Biden Administration political appointees exercised significant oversight and control over the investigation of the President’s son. Witnesses described how U.S. Attorney for the District of Delaware and now-Special Counsel David Weiss, who oversaw the investigation and prosecution of Hunter Biden, had to seek (1) agreement from other U.S. Attorneys to bring cases in a district geographically distinct from his own and (2) approval from the Biden Justice Department’s Tax Division to bring specific charges or take investigative actions against Hunter Biden. Despite the clear conflict of interest, Weiss was only afforded special counsel status after the investigation came under congressional scrutiny.
The White House has obstructed the Committees’ impeachment inquiry by withholding key documents and witnesses. The White House has impeded the Committees’ investigation of President Biden’s unlawful retention of classified documents, by refusing to make relevant witnesses available for interviews and by erroneously asserting executive privilege over audio recordings from Special Counsel Hur’s interviews with President Biden. In addition, the White House is preventing the National Archives from turning over documents that are material to the Committees’ inquiry.

what do you do as an art historian? (sorry if its a dumb question but it sounds very interesting) and was it difficult to finish that major?
hiya!! not a dumb question at all!!
there is the standard what do *i* do specifically and also what can you do *generally* so i'll give an overview of both !!
art historians often find jobs as curators for galleries or museums, work in museum education, collections management, preservation, art therapy assistance, studio art assistants, they can work at auction houses as researchers, writers, or auctioneers. depending on how far you take your studies you can also teach art history in various institutions.
i, personally, work in both collections management and also museum display (mainly bc we're underfunded and cannot pay someone to do one of those jobs so i do both.... yeah...) which means the majority of my day is spent handling all the incoming loans and donations of artworks and artifacts people want to donate to our museum. i also work a ton in our archives cataloging and documenting every item in our collection (and also organizing the archive room which is my nightmare!) but i also work on museum exhibits as well! so i'm designing shows and exhibits to put on. (this includes going to artist studios and hand picking which artworks/photographs we want to include in our show, handling the shipping and packaging of temporary shows, and i hang all my own shit !!!!!!!!!!! i have the help of an intern or two but my very first photography exhibit i curated... i was on the ladder i was dealing with the wires i was hanging it alllll) a lot of my day also consists of running around town to different stained glass places or framers or woodworkers to help me with upcoming exhibits.
and i don't think it was that difficult for me to finish my degree. comparatively art history isn't like...notorious for being a difficult major hahaha but i mean if you hate reading a ton and you hate writing then i'd recommend something else !! there's a lot of reading. but i enjoyed every moment i was in school learning art history !! so i wouldn't say difficult no!!

The Role of the Rothschild Family in Supporting the Zionist Project and Palestine
The Rothschild family was one of the main players in achieving the goals of the Zionist movement, which sought to establish a national homeland for Jews in Palestine since the late 19th century. In collaboration with the leadership of the Zionist movement, led by Theodor Herzl, the family attempted to influence Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II. Their efforts included offering generous proposals, such as repaying the massive Ottoman state debts or granting favorable loans in exchange for allowing Jewish immigration and ownership of land in Palestine. Despite these attempts, Sultan Abdul Hamid refused to sell any part of Palestine, emphasizing that it was not his property but the inheritance of the Islamic nation.
After negotiations with the Ottoman state failed, the Rothschild family shifted its strategy and focused on financing illegal Jewish immigration to Palestine. Through intermediaries and Zionist institutions, the family supported the purchase and development of Palestinian lands to establish agricultural settlements. The Rothschilds also heavily funded educational and agricultural projects to settle Jewish immigrants and build infrastructure that supported the establishment of an independent community, making them among the most prominent supporters of the Zionist project.
Following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire after World War I, achieving Zionist goals became easier under the British Mandate. Zionists took advantage of strong relationships with major colonial powers, especially Britain, which issued the 1917 Balfour Declaration supporting the establishment of a national home for Jews in Palestine. The Rothschild family had significant influence on Britain, with the declaration officially addressed to Lord Walter Rothschild.
Over time, the Rothschild family's support was pivotal in strengthening Jewish settlement and the establishment of the State of Israel. Despite rumors that the family financially contributed to the construction of the United Nations headquarters, historical documents confirm that the land for the headquarters in New York was donated by businessman John D. Rockefeller Jr. Nevertheless, the Zionist movement benefited from the United Nations' role, especially the 1947 Partition Plan for Palestine, which paved the way for the creation of Israel.
In conclusion, the Rothschild family played a crucial role in realizing the Zionist dream, whether through substantial financial support or diplomatic influence. Their efforts paved the way for the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 and significantly reshaped the history of the region.

Resistance Banker: Walraven van Hall
$250 Million Heist
Walraven van Hall was a Dutch banker whose brains, bravery, and unwavering moral compass saved thousands of Jews and anti-Nazi resistance fighters during the German occupation of the Netherlands.
Walraven was born to a prominent Dutch family in Haarlem, the Netherlands, in 1906. The dream of his youth was to join the merchant marine and see the world, but because of poor eyesight his application was rejected. Instead Walraven moved to New York City, and with the help of his brother Gijs, a banker (and future mayor of Amsterdam), Walraven got a job on Wall Street. After learning the ropes of the banking industry, Walraven returned to the Netherlands and worked as a banker and stockbroker.
In 1940, Germany invaded the Netherlands. Among those affected by this calamitous event were families of merchant sailors who were unable to return home. Walraven and his brother Gijs created a fund to help these families pay their bills. The fund was guaranteed by the Dutch government-in-exile in London.
It didn’t take long after occupying Holland for the Nazis to start enacting anti-Jewish regulations, taking away Dutch Jews’ most basic liberties and conscripting them into forced labor camps and later, death camps. (Ultimately, 75% of Dutch Jews were murdered by the Nazis.) As the persecution intensified, so did the anti-Nazi resistance movement. Walraven expanded his fund to support a wide range of resistance activities, with a particular emphasis on helping Dutch Jews. He tapped into his network of wealthy Dutch citizens to fundraise and quickly became known as the “banker to the resistance.”
For three years, Walraven funded the Dutch resistance, providing about $500 million (!) to save Jews and other victims of the Nazis. How did Walraven, with his brother’s help, raise such a massive amount of money? Incredibly, they obtained $250 million by robbing De Nederlandsche Bank (Dutch National Bank), the biggest bank heist in European history. The details of how they achieved this are complicated, involving multiple shell companies, fake documents, bureaucrats who were friendly to the cause, and cooperation between a wide network of resistance organizations. Walraven was known as the Olieman (Oilman) because his warmth and charisma lubricated the friction between various resistance groups and fighters. The rest of the money was supplied by donations and loans from generous Dutch people who were outraged by the Nazi atrocities taking place in their country.
The complete story of how Walraven raised so much money may never be known, but one of his tricks was falsifying bank bonds and exchanging them for real bonds, and then paper money. He did this right under the nose of bank president Rost van Tonningen, a prominent Nazi who collaborated with the German occupiers. The money Walraven collected was used to secretly house and support over 8000 Jews in hiding, conduct acts of sabotage against Nazi targets in Holland, and rescue captured Allied pilots.
In January 1945, Walraven was arrested by the Germans, along with seven other resistance fighters, in revenge for the death of a police commander. All eight were quickly executed without trial. Ironically, the Germans had no idea who Walraven was; they assumed he was just another resistance fighter rather than the banker and leader who made so much resistance activity possible.
Posthumously, Walraven received several honors including the Dutch Cross of Resistance and the U.S. Medal of Freedom. He was honored as Righteous Among the Nations by Israeli Holocaust Memorial Yad Vashem in 1978. However, Walraven’s brave deeds were not widely known until recently, possibly because powerful banks didn’t want people to know the secrets of how they were robbed.
In 2018, Dutch director Joram Lursen released “The Resistance Banker,” a feature film about Walraven van Hall that became one of the highest-grossing Dutch films of all time. Joram said in an interview with the Jewish Telegraph Agency (JTA), “When people think of the resistance.. they rarely think of the enormous amounts of money that it cost to keep this organization – the resistance – running.” He likened his film to a Hollywood action film, characterizing it as “easy to follow and full of suspense as a casino heist.” The film is available on Netflix.
For saving thousands of lives by funding the Dutch resistance to Nazi occupation, we honor Walraven van Hall as this week’s Thursday Hero.

Ultimately, this story about Pakistan is more properly understood as one about the contest between China and the U.S. that pits the rest of the world in the middle. Chinese officials, we learned, regularly told their Pakistani counterparts that Beijing doesn’t see the contest as zero sum, that it’s okay to be friendly with both major powers. The U.S. does not quite see it that way, and Pakistan knows it. The result is the story below. If you’re at all interested in foreign affairs, we think you’ll find this one enlightening.
[...]
In October of 2022, a pivotal year for Pakistan, military chief Qamar Javed Bajwa finally won what he had long been striving for: an official state trip to the United States. His mission was explicit; a document prepared for Bajwa ahead of the visit is titled, “U.S. Re-Engagement with Pakistan: Ideas for Reviving an Important Relationship.”
[...]
From New York, Munir Akram, Pakistan’s representative to the United Nations, began reporting back cables highlighting “sarcastic” comments from his Chinese counterpart, who openly tweaked Akram about Pakistan’s sudden swing toward Washington. In private conversations with their Pakistani counterparts over the past year, as reported by Pakistani diplomats, Chinese officials have expressed displeasure with Islamabad for “switching camps”—rather than merely seeking open relations with both countries.
Now, with their U.S. gamble failing to pay off, Pakistani officials have become increasingly frantic in their efforts to repair relations with China, including, asthe documents reveal, by granting China approval for a military base at the port of Gwadar—a major and longstanding strategic demand of Beijing—and authorizing joint military operations inside Pakistan.
[...]
Internal reports emphasize Pakistan’s wish that its relations with the U.S. and China not be “zero-sum.” “What the Pakistani military prefers is to be able to maintain a balance between their Chinese and U.S. military relationships,” said Adam Weinstein, deputy director of the Middle East program at the Quincy Institute and an analyst on Pakistan. “They believe that if things are balanced, both sides will have an incentive to keep relations strong.”
Despite this preference, a classified internal Pakistani intelligence assessment judges China to be a more “natural strategic ally” than the U.S., with whom Pakistan is deemed to share “limited” strategic interests.
Facing such loss of trust from a key ally, the documents also show that Pakistan’s military-backed government privately promised Beijing a long-coveted concession: a Chinese military base in the key port city of Gwadar. Gwadar is a key node in China’s Belt-and-Road Initiative—the last stop in a land corridor through Pakistan that would connect China’s economy westward, and make it less reliant on shipping transit in the South China Sea.
In return, Pakistan asked for a major upgrade in economic and military assistance from Beijing in order to insulate Islamabad from the fierce reaction from the U.S. such a deal is expected to provoke.
[...]
This August, Pakistani government sources vented frustration to the media over their failed reconciliation with the U.S., lamenting the meager benefits that mending ties had brought. Government sources told the Express Tribune that “Pakistan’s reliance on the United States to secure the IMF package was not yielding the results.” This week, the IMF announced a decision to consider Pakistan’s loan request at an upcoming meeting slated for September 25, raising hopes that a deal may still be secured.
Pakistan’s private concessions to China come as the U.S. State Department has continued to publicly defend the military regime from criticism over its role in rigging elections this February, gross human rights abuses inside the country targeting the press and civil society, and an ongoing crackdown on supporters of now-imprisoned former Prime Minister Khan. That crackdown now includes credible threats to Khan’s life, as he continues to be held in government custody despite repeated rejection by the courts of the charges against him.
“We believe good governance, long-term capacity building, and sustainable market-based approaches that let the private sector flourish are the best paths to sustained growth and development,” the State Department told Drop Site News in its post-publication statement. “Our partnership with Pakistan spans the full range of regional and bilateral issues, including increasing trade and investment, strengthening security cooperation, promoting regional security and stability, building climate resilience, supporting democracy and human rights, and expanding people-to-people ties.”
The rigging of elections this February was met with general indifference in Washington, as has the ongoing suppression of press and political activism in the country.  On the economic front, Pakistan’s imploding economy has consumed Western aid with nothing to show for it but soaring inflation, blackouts, an internet slowed to a crawl, and joblessness.

Ancient Warship’s Bronze Battering Ram Sunk During a Battle Between Rome and Carthage Found
Found near the Aegadian Islands, just west of Sicily, the bronze rostrum played a role in the last battle of the First Punic War, which ended in 241 B.C.E.
In 241 B.C.E., two empires faced off in a naval clash off the coast of Sicily. By then, Rome and Carthage had been fighting for more than two decades. Rome’s victory in the skirmish, officially called the Battle of the Aegates, brought an end to the First Punic War, the initial conflict in a series of wars between the two ancient powers.
Now, explorers have recovered a piece of that final battle: the bronze battering ram of an ancient warship. According to a statement from Sicily’s Superintendence of the Sea, the ram was found on the seafloor off the western coast of the Mediterranean island, at a depth of around 260 feet. To retrieve the artifact, the team used deep-water submarines from the Society for Documentation of Submerged Sites (SDSS) and the oceanographic research vessel Hercules.
The seabed off the Aegadian Islands “is always a valuable source of information to add further knowledge about the naval battle between the Roman and Carthaginian fleets,” Regional Councilor for Cultural Heritage Francesco Paolo Scarpinato tells Finestre sull’Arte. He adds that the find is yet another confirmation of the work of the late archaeologist Sebastiano Tusa, who spearheaded exploration of the seabed as the site of the 241 battle after a separate ram, also known as a rostrum, was first found there in the early 2000s. In the two decades since, researchers have recovered at least 25 rams from the seabed.
At the time of the Battle of the Aegates, Rome and Carthage had been at war for 23 years, fighting for dominance in the Mediterranean. As the Greek historian Polybius later wrote, the Romans sank 50 Carthaginian ships and captured another 70 along with their crews, taking nearly 10,000 sailors prisoner during the naval battle. Rome forced Carthage to surrender. But the fragile peace was short-lived: Over the next century, Rome would go on to fight a second and third war against the Punic people, winning each time.
“It was very costly, both in terms of human life and economically,” Francesca Oliveri, an archaeologist at the superintendence, told BBC News’ Alessia Franco and David Robson in 2022. “In the last phase, Rome even had to ask for a loan from the most well-to-do families to arm the fleet and build new boats.”

The recently discovered ram has been brought to Favignana, one of the Aegadian Islands, for further study. Though its features are difficult to make out because the object is covered in marine life, researchers have been able to discern a decoration on its front: a relief depicting a Montefortino-style Roman helmet decorated with three feathers.
The battering ram adds to the wealth of war relics found on the seabed, which also include 30 Roman soldiers’ Montefortino helmets, two swords, coins and many clay amphorae (large storage jars).
According to the SDSS, rams were the most important naval weapons of their time. They were placed on the bows of warships at water level so that sailors could crash their boats into enemy vessels, damaging and sinking them. The plethora of rams scattered on the seabed are testaments to the weapons’ effectiveness in ancient battle.
“We are finding so many things that help to illustrate a little better the world of the third century [B.C.E.],” Oliveri told BBC News in 2022. “It’s the first site of a naval battle, in the world, that has been scientifically documented like this, and it will continue to be documented—because the area of interest is very large. … It will take at least another 20 years to explore it fully.”

"When Arley Gill, head of Grenada’s National Reparations Committee, envisioned his work seeking repair for centuries of enslavement on the Caribbean island, one thing was certain: It was going to be a long slog.
But just two years since its founding, the task force is fielding calls from individuals around the world looking to make amends for ancestors who benefited from enslavement in Grenada.
“If you had told us this would be happening, we wouldn’t have believed you,” Mr. Gill says, crediting a burgeoning movement of descendants of enslavers getting wise to their family’s history and taking action.
In Grenada’s case, the momentum began with a public apology made by former BBC journalist Laura Trevelyan and her family in February at a ceremony on the island. They apologized for their forebears’ enslavement of people in Grenada and their enrichment from it, pledging an initial contribution of £100,000 ($130,000) toward education on the island.
“She opened the doors for people to feel comfortable” coming forward, says Mr. Gill.
In April [2023], Ms. Trevelyan and journalist Alex Renton co-founded an organization called Heirs of Slavery. Its eight British members have ancestors who benefited financially from slavery in various ways...
Heirs of Slavery says wealth and privilege trickle down through generations, and that there are possibly millions of Britons whose lives were touched by money generated from enslavement.
The group aims to amplify the voices of those already calling for reparations, like Caribbean governments. And it supports organizations working to tackle the modern-day consequences of slavery, both in the United Kingdom and abroad, from racism to health care inequities. But it’s also setting an example for others, drafting a road map of reparative justice for enslavement – at the individual level...
“Shining a light is always a good idea,” says Mr. Renton, who published a book in 2021 about his family’s ties to slavery, donating the proceeds to a handful of nongovernmental organizations in the Caribbean and England. “You don’t have to feel guilt about it; you can’t change the past,” he says, paraphrasing Sir Geoff Palmer, a Scottish Jamaican scholar. “But we should feel ashamed that up to this point we’ve done nothing about the consequences” of slavery.
Start anywhere
Most Africans trafficked to the Americas and Caribbean during the trans-Atlantic slave trade ended up in the West Indies. The wealth generated there through unpaid, brutal, forced labor funded much of Europe’s Industrial Revolution and bolstered churches, banks, and educational institutions. When slavery was abolished in British territories in 1833, the government took out a loan to compensate enslavers for their lost “property.” The government only finished paying off that debt in 2015.
The family of David Lascelles, the 8th Earl of Harewood, for example, received more than £26,000 from the British government after abolition in compensation for nearly 1,300 lives, while “the enslaved people were given nothing,” Mr. Lascelles says. He joined Heirs of Slavery upon its founding, eager to collaborate with peers doing work he’s been focused on for decades.
“People like us have, historically, kept quiet about what our ancestors did. We believe the time has come to face up to what happened, to acknowledge the ongoing repercussions of this human tragedy, and support the existing movements to discuss repair and reconciliation,” reads the group’s webpage.
For Ms. Trevelyan, that meant a very public apology – and resigning from journalism to dedicate herself to activism...
For Mr. Lascelles, a second cousin of King Charles, making repairs included in 2014 handing over digitized copies of slavery-related documents discovered in the basement of the Downton Abbey-esque Harewood House to the National Archives in Barbados, where much of his family’s wealth originated during enslavement.
“What can we do that is actually useful and wanted – not to solve our own conscience?” he says he asks himself...
“Listen and learn”
...The group is planning a conference this fall that will bring together families that benefited from the trans-Atlantic slave trade along with representatives from Caribbean governments and Black Europeans advocating for reparations. In the meantime, members are meeting with local advocacy groups to better understand what they want – and how Heirs of Slavery might assist.
At a recent meeting, “there was one man who said he wanted to hear what we had to say, but said he saw us as a distraction. And I understand that,” says Mr. Renton. “Maximum humility is necessary on our part. We are here to listen and learn, not try to take the lead and be the boss.”
Mr. Renton’s family has made donations to youth development and educational organizations, but he doesn’t see it as compensation. “I see this as work of repair. If I sold everything I own, I couldn’t begin to compensate for the lives my ancestors destroyed,” he says."

Note: I know the source name probably inspires skepticism for a lot of people (fairly), but they're actually considered a very reliable and credible publication in both accuracy and lack of bias.

Mira Lazine at Erin In The Morning:
On Friday, the activist group One Iowa Action announced on Facebook that Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds (R) plans to introduce legislation that would remove gender identity as a protected category under the Iowa Civil Rights Act. If passed, the legislation would allow businesses and government institutions to discriminate against transgender individuals. The proposal appears to echo House Bill 2082, introduced last year, which sought to classify transgender people as disabled. It remains unclear if Reynolds’ pending bill will include this controversial classification. If enacted, this legislation would mark the first time a state repealed anti-discrimination protections for an entire group.
Kris Maul, a transgender resident of Urbandale, Iowa, said to the Iowa Public Radio in 2024 in response to HB 2082, “I probably would have met the criteria for gender dysphoria many years ago, but I don’t currently meet the criteria. So I am a transgender person, but I don’t have gender dysphoria diagnosis, I wouldn’t be eligible nor seek that diagnosis today, so I’m going to lose protections under that.” One Iowa Action detailed in their post further the impacts that this bill would have. “If this bill passes, landlords will legally be able to deny [transgender people] the ability to rent an apartment, banks will be able to deny them a car loan, and hotels will be able to turn them away for no other reason than because they are transgender. This bill gives those who wish to discriminate the ability to do so.”
[...]
Contrary to what the desires of politicians may suggest, anti-trans bills in Iowa are incredibly unpopular. Last year, over 20 anti-trans bills were introduced in the Iowa state government, including a bill that would have required special markers to be placed on identification documents of transgender people and a bill that would have redefined the concept of “equal” to exclude transgender people. These bills failed after the legislature adjourned sine die, without any of them being passed by the predominantly Republican legislature.
The public has pushed back against these bills as well. HB 2082 saw protests from over 300 people in the hallways of the Iowa Capitol building, many holding signs and chanting to oppose the removal of anti-discrimination protections for transgender people. During this session, state Representative Jeff Shipley, a Republican, launched a tirade against transgender women, labeling them as “creepy old men.” He claimed that this bill was retaliation for trans people protesting against anti-trans athlete and activist Chloe Cole in Iowa City in the months prior.
Gender identity was added as a protected category to the Iowa Civil Rights Act in 2007. Since then, there have been multiple attempts to take this down, spearheaded entirely by anti-trans politicians. One such bill was killed in 2020, with even some Republicans coming to the defense of trans people by opposing the repeal of gender identity from these anti-discrimination measures. However, as the Republican party has veered more towards far-right politics in the past few years, more and more politicians have been vocally opposed to allowing transgender people to have the same protections as cisgender people.
Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) seeks to remove trans people from Iowa’s Civil Rights Act protections. Trans people were added in 2007 to the people protected by the Civil Rights Act.
