Hey, Sex Witch! This one's uhhh probably different than your usual fare BUT here goes. I'm pretty close to middle-aged, monogamous (m/f), and having some trouble with like. positions. Because we're both like ow my knees and ow my hips and yes this is the one position that seems to work but now we're BORED. Which has led to all sorts of anxiety issues around initiating and having sex at all. Do you know of any resources to help a couple of old farts out?
hi anon,
this is actually soooo normal for what I do here! a lot of Sex Witch Advice(TM) boils down to "okay, so try something different then," and that's exactly what we're going to do today!
right off the bat if knees are an issue: hey. have we tried some padding. you could buy, like, this 95 dollar sex pillow from goop if you really wanted to
but you could also just, like, fold up your own blanket or strategically place your own pillows to do exactly the same thing! padding in general can be a huge help; just prop em up wherever you need them to support the parts of your body that need support and go to town.
or, hey, just buy some knee pads and/or knee braces. this may just be the roller skater in me talking, but knee pads are so sexy. having sex that requires its own gear is soooo sexy, and knee pads are no exception!
this is lingerie. to me.
also, pro tip for you and anyone reading this: this also 100% applies to things like wrist or elbow braces! any supportive devices! whatever you need to support your body and keep it comfy during sex, just do that!
aside from just padding things out, let's talk about sex that requires less hip movement. y'all have, presumably, fingers and mouths and a variety of exciting erogenous zones, all of which can be combined in fun and exciting ways.
there is also a wide, WIDE world of sex toys out there to explore together. hips too achey to thrust much anymore? that's fine; just buy a thrusting vibrator and get each other off that way, babe. I've heard particularly great things about Hot Octopuss, a company that found unexpected popularity with elderly customers who enjoyed how accessible many of their toys were for bodies that aren't quite as flexible as they used to be, but obviously anything that tickles your fancy is fair game.
(just, you know. check the packaging to make sure it's body-safe. no jelly dildos, so help me god.)
it sounds like the problem absolutely isn't you and your partner not wanting to bone. in a strange way I consider it a great sign that you've gotten bored, because it tells me that you and your partner like variety and expect to have fun when you have sex together!
to me, that means you're in a fine position to get back in the swing of things by doing a little experimenting together. approach sex like a game, playing together find out what works. try things like the list of positions offered in this article, seeing what works for you, what doesn't, and what just feels silly. when something doesn't work for you, that isn't a failure - just a learning experience, and a great opportunity to laugh together.
listen, you guys are in a super cool part of life where the gift of your lived experience is starting to make itself known and require different accommodations. learning how to do that now is GREAT, because (if everything goes right) you're just going to keep getting older, and your body will continue to change! how great to get to learn what intimacy will look like as you spend more of your lives together!

[ID: A digital illustration that looks like it was made of construction paper. A grid of eight Garfield head shapes on a background of blue, five of them look like orange paper stuck to the background, the other three are cutouts revealing glimpses of a photograph of leaves and palm trees. "July 2024" is scrawled at the top of the image. End ID.]
I have decided not to feel bad that this year is for about-two-hour playlists. Cassette tapes never went over 120, why should I. And my summer mixes are always heavily influenced by the rattling contents of auntie and uncle's tape collections. I decided to indulge myself this month which is why my favourite Harry Nilsson and Donovan songs are on here, sorry, I love them, they follow me around like puppies.
Related media to some of the songs:
Player's 'Baby Come Back' was a key song in the movie Riddle of Fire which is great, big recommend if you like movies about troublemaking kids with the aesthetics of Return to Witch Mountain. Here's a trailer.
'Shoes Untied' is the first song from Pony Talk, which grew out of members of The Downhill Jam, which is a Tony Hawk Pro Skater cover band and a good bunch of folks.
'You've Got That Edge" is the single from Urban Heat's upcoming album, which you can preorder now, they're maybe my favourite new-to-me band I've stumbled across this year.
Anyway here's a link to July's playlist on Spotify, with the track list below the cut.
Embedded, if you like that sort of thing:
'Lazy River' - The Mills Brothers
'It's a good day (to fight the system)' - Shungudzo
'Baby Come Back' - Player
'Butterfly' - Crazy Town
'Shapes & Colors' - Boy Jr.
'CAUTION!!!' - CerVon Campbell
'Everybody Wants To Rule The World' - Boy Jr.
'Axel F' - Thomas Foster
'Neverender' - Justice
'Take A Slice' - Glass Animals
'Gives You Hell' - The All-American Rejects
'Little Chaos' - Orla Gartland
'All That' - Sparks
'Vacation' - The Go-Go's
'We Invented Love' - Dorian Electra
'Roundabout - 2008 Remaster' - Yes
'Shoes Untied' - Pony Talk
'Marigold' - Begonia
'Stuck In The Middle With You' - Stealers Wheel
'Escape (The Pina Colada Song)' - Rupert Holmes
'Coconut' - Harry Nilsson
'Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)' - Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings
'Blister In The Sun' - Violent Femmes
'Gotta Get Up' - Harry Nilsson
'Dream A Little Dream Of Me' - The Mamas & The Papas
'Riki Tiki Tavi' - Donovan
'Summertime' - The Zombies
'Soft Spot' - Claud
'You've Got That Edge' - Urban Heat
'Crazy' - Seal
'What a Fool Believes - 2009 Remaster' - The Doobie Brothers

Christmas Tag Game
It's Festivus for the rest of us so grab your Chanukah bush, your mistletoe, your pagan ritual or whatever brings you joy and come gather round the fire and celebrate your pocket friends.
Tagged by: @svetlanayevgenivna
Favorite nickname you’ve ever been given? I haven't really been given many because my name is short anyway. But I get called Lani by very close family. And it's what I call myself to my cats like 'come to your Lani'.
Where are you located? Manchester. The UK one not the US one.
What season is it where you are now? It shall be winter on the 22nd so we're in the last dregs of Autumn.
Favourite tradition this time of year? Watching Tailor of Gloucester at night on the 24th, followed by The Snowman.
Favourite holiday food? The gingerbread stuffing I make.
Mulled wine, eggnog or hot apple cider? I don't drink anymore since an illness made me severely allergic to a few preservatives in alcohol. I don't want to risk the roulette of which ones (it's terrifying when it happens) so I just avoid all of it now and drink non-alcoholic alternatives. But even if I did drink, it would still be 'none of the above'. I used to love a glass of sherry at yuletide, because my mum always gave me a small glass on when I was little, and it just tastes of the season. But they don't even make that particular sherry anymore!
Turkey, Ham or Nut Roast (Or Tofurkey?)? Quorn roast. Cooked with a really freaking fragrant and delicious all-spice gravy (it has a huge list of flavours in it but they just all hum together).
Would you rather spend the December holidays in: A cabin in the woods surrounded by snow, or a house on the beach with sun and sand? Cabin in the woods. It's December and I demand snow! Even though I prefer hot weather in general, there are just certain times when only the cold will do.
Are you pro-snow or anti-snow? Pro. I find it very magical and it always makes everywhere white and glistening. Plus there was that one year where everyone got a whole extra week off because it snowed so heavily that the whole country had to sort of temporarily pause.
Have you ever built a snowman? I built a snow witch with my mum when I was 11 (she had a little witch hat on, a broom, and was surrounded by these little garden ornaments shaped like hares) and then made a giant one with a friend when I was 22 in the middle this huge place called Heaton Park.
Skiing or Snowboarding? I'm a former figure skater, so i have to say ice skating despite the fact it's not an option.
Do you decorate for the holidays? Yes. It's all very yule based though, as we celebrate Solstice, not Christmas.
Favourite holiday movie? Hogfather and Arthur Christmas. I also cannot have the season without watching the midwinter special from CAOS.
Favourite holiday fanfic? I don’t have one.
If you were to star in a Hallmark movie, who would be your love interest? No doubt it would be someone wearing plaid. Who owns some kind of dying business...
Tagging: @indigoraysoflight @outragedmermaid @ness029 and anyone else who wants to!

toh fanfics to keep you busy during hiatus, a thread.
A/N: If an author has a (*) by their name, PLEASE check out their other works!!! After combing through the toh archive, I now follow the skilled writers I've found rather than checking ao3 tags. This list could be longer but I really wanted to highlight these writers.
Finding Home Amongst the Infinite by DontDoHeroinKids * Multichapter, ongoing. Adventure/Action, Canon Divergence, Found Family, Friendship.
Mini Summary: Luz is a planes walker, and has spent years stumbling across the multitudes of realities, desperately searching for a way to return to her abandoned home with little success. She winds up in the Isles where she'll find answers and allies to help her on her journey.
One of the best multi chapter fics I've had the pleasure of reading. Luz's dynamic with all the characters is handled extremely well. Unlike other multi chap fics I've read, this is almost entirely done from Luz's POV.
Holding You Back by @FoolsSee *
Canon-Compliant Character Study, completed.
Recommendation in honor of Yesterday's Lie. Pre-season 1 one shot that captures Camila and Luz's relationship really well + strong characterization. Fools has written 27 other toh fics- PLEASE check out the authors other works!!!
Breaking Point by SquirrelWriter *
Canon-Divergence, Hurt/Comfort, Friendship, completed.
My favorite Luz and Amity oneshot. Not a lot of writers can effectively capture what makes their friendship work and this one knocks it out of the park.
Your Name by SunshineChildx
Multichapter, Slow burn, Friends to lovers, ongoing.
lumity fic based on the move of the same name. Not yet completed, but this is one of the most well written fics I've ever read. The prose and narration are beautiful and I've cried reading it.
Eda Clawthorne's Pro Skater by A_Big_Old_Skeleton
Series, Skateshop AU, Fluff, Angst, Humor, ongoing.
This is the only beta fic I support tbh. The characterization is off the charts and I adore how the author handles everyone's relationships. The comedy and storytelling are superb.
Postcards from a Place Named Threshold by incoherent_icarus_works *
Series, Character Study, ongoing.
A collection of standalone character study oneshots each centered around a different character from The Owl House (atm Luz, Willow, Boscha) . Luz one shot was inspired by @woozywonder art!
Curse Me Goodbye by Lumitations *
Canon Divergence, Comedy, Urban Fantasy, Action/Adventure, Romance. Multichapter, completed.
One of the most fun fics I've ever read. The mystery/intrigue is INCREDIBLE as are the kick-ass action scenes. Lumity centric.
Heir of the Jedi by @whatisurowlpolicy *
Multichapter. Ongoing. Action/Adventure, Star Wars AU, Angst, Fluff, Humor, Enemies to Lovers
I don't know shit about Star Wars and I am begging anyone who is dissuaded by the AU tag to READ THIS FIC! Green is extremely good at handling the ensemble cast of toh along with writing top tier development for every character. It's also lumity centric, and I think y'all will enjoy their take on them.
Our Stories Burn Bright, Hung Like Stars in the Sky by AtticusKaine*
Series, ongoing. Action/Adventure, Romance, Found Family, Humor.
What the hell are you doing with your life if you haven't read this series? Hands down my favorite toh canon divergence, it fleshes out every single character in ways you wouldn't believe.
make my heart your home by @tiredandjaded*
Ongoing series, found family, hurt/comfort.
Takes place in between s1/s2, I take it as canon. The relationships between Luz, Eda and Lilith post YBOS are handled beautifully-- the character dynamics and found family vibes are off the charts.
Hold Me Close by @the-lone-witch-and-secret-room
Oneshot. Completed. Jerbric Hurt/Comfort.
She writes the well-known Locked Out ALONG WITH several god-tier one shots y'all HAVE to read oh my god. This is one of my favorites. The characterization of Jerbo and Edric's relationship is super sweet.
learning how to be (with you by my side) by uniqeusernamegenerator*
Multichapter. Completed. College AU, Romance, Comedy
Atm you can only view it if you have an AO3 account and if you haven't read this masterpiece already YOU MUST! It's easy and free.
This is one of the best lumity fics of all time. The slice of life feel is otherworldly, as is the author's INCREDIBLE prose. Hits you right in the feels along with their skarscha fic windows up, walls down.
Transcendence by rhysanity
Oneshot. Soulmates AU. Completed.
This is what I like to call a ship conversion fic. If you've never considered skarscha before, read this fic. It will hit you in the feels and have you rereading over and over again for eternity.
Golden written by @whatisurowlpolicy / story by both of us *
Multichapter, ongoing. Golden Guard Amity AU. Action/Adventure, Found Family, Drama, Comedy, Hurt/Comfort
Shamless plug, this is one of my favorite ideas I've ever thought of and I am beyond hyped to be co-creating it with Green. We're doing a role reversal following a lot of the same beats of season 1 but putting our own spin on it. You'll see a lot more of the dynamics we haven't seen a lot in season 2 like Amity and Lilith along with Willow and Gus. Gonna go ahead and @anguigenus because Gus and Amity's relationship is one of the major focuses of the fic.

Can you do the brothers reaction (and if it's ok the dateables + Luke as well) to MC being a pro at skateboarding?Just curious that's all >v<
My knowledge of skateboarding extends to the Tony Hawks Pro Skater games and Sk∞ so this will be interesting. Will be breaking this up into two parts and get to the dateables at a later time.
Brothers react to Skateboarding Pro! Mc
Lucifer
When Lucifer looks through the window of the student council office at RAD and sees MC on their skateboard going at a breakneck pace to make it to classes on time, his isn't all that pleased
This demon is the slightest bit old school and may not see the sport as being the most refined
Lucifer isn't going to say anything about it though and is just glad that they can make it to RAD in a more timely manner when the MC inevitably sleeps in
After a bit of time and repeated exposure to MC skating, Lucifer will start to develop a bit of a begrudge respect for it and the MC's skills
Not only was MC able to showcase expert balance to be able to flip the board midair and land solidly, they made it all look so effortlessly
Soon enough, Lucifer will understand that this is something the MC takes pride in and who was he to deny them of his favorite sin
Just don't ride it in the Demon Lord's Castle...
Mammon
When MC first came to the Devildom for the exchange program, they had a strange carrier case strapped to their back and Mammon was instantly interested in seeing if what was inside had any potential value
When he does manage to steal the MC's board, he is a bit disappointed to see that it was just some beat-up piece of wood with wheels
He knows a bit more about human culture than some of his brothers just through his exposure when going to the human world to make deals with witches, but didn't really get exposed to skateboarding
When Mammon is caught by the MC and questioned about why they have their board, he is kind of quick to go on the defense claiming he doesn't know why they are lugging around something so useless anyway
Mammon is then dragged to the HoL's courtyard and shown exactly what the board is for. The jumps were so cool! The rail riding was something else and don't get him started on how fast they were able to go
Being a bit of an opportunist, Mammon will be quick to try to get MC to agree to do some live demos and performances for small fees. And may try it out for himself
Satan
Satan is very interested in all the healed scars that liters MC's forearms and knees and lightly inquiries about them one day while they are walking into town
When MC says they are from skateboarding, Satan will nod his head with his hand on his chin in thought
Soon enough, he will start approaching MC with diagrams of skating moves and physics theories to see if they are able to pull off more and more advanced moves
His interest is almost flattering but also super intimidating because he watched the MC with unwavering focus and a serious look on his face while he tries to mentally catalog the MC's scope of talent like a cat what refuses to blink when staring at you
He is trying to show his support of the MC by research ways that they can possibly improve upon tricks they already know or showing them more obscure moves he found in weirdly niche books at the library
It comes off a bit strong
In a weird, roundabout way, he becomes more knowledgeable about skateboarding than the MC and he hasn't even stepped onto the board before
Asmodeus
Asmo was waiting to meet MC outside of this cute little cafe so that they can take Devilgram pictures of this new limited addition seasonal drink when he sees MC speeding down the street on a skateboard
He was slightly taken aback just because he wasn't expecting it but is entertained by watching them weave their way through all the demons milling about with such ease and grace
Skateboarding wouldn't be Asmo's sport of choice, if there is one to begin with, but he can see beauty in just about anything and MC kind of made his heart skip a beat there when they did a quick stop right in front of him and gave him a lazy smirk
Asmo probably wouldn't ask to see the MC do many tricks just because he feels like he can't take good pictures without being in the pathway and getting ran over BUT he is totally into the skater fashion
It isn't to his usually taste but Asmo would make sure that MC looked absolutely stunning in whatever he picks out for them to skate in
Breathable, lightweight, and 1000 times better than early 2000s fashion. You're welcome, MC
Beelzebub
Beel was just walking back to HoL after going to the local market to pick up some snack for the movie night everybody was having and sampling everything when he sees MC practicing some kick flips in the courtyard
He stands to the side for a bit, not wanting to get in the way, but immediately drops all of the food when he sees MC take a bit of a nasty tumble and has them in his arms and fretting in a heartbeat
After being assured that they are indeed okay, Beel will relax a bit and ask what they were doing
Beel loves sports and can understand the appeal. He can't really tell how talented MC is, just because he doesn't have a frame of reference, but they seem to be having fun and don't fall all that often
He is more than happy to be MC's personal cheerleader and watches them pull of more and more complicated tricks
He doesn't really get used to the MC's occasional blunders and will always seem to materialize at their side ready with some bandages and lollipops he keeps in his pocket, just in case
The lollipops have totally already been opened and licked on
Belphegor
Belphie was laying in the grass of the courtyard of RAD, waiting for MC to show up for their regularly scheduled school nap during lunch, when he hears the sound of wheels on the pavement approaching
He slowly rolls himself over enough to see what is going on, when he catches sight of MC dismounting the board and walking over to him
Belphie used to be obsessed with human culture but was understandablely behind with his knowledge on more recent trends so his curiosity is slightly peaked
He doesn't bother asking about it in the moment though because he has more important things to do, such as using his favorite pillow
It is only after MC keeps showing up to the meeting spot that Belphie finally caves and asks about it
He appears to be interested, if his eyes not looking as droopy was anything to go by, so MC will have to take the incentive and just show him a few tricks and flips
Belphie isn't much for physical activities so he isn't the most invested in understanding the sport, but he does try to show his support by asking you to show him a few of your favorite moves
He even gets onto the board for a few seconds to try to see what the appeal was, but isn't that thrilled when he almost immediately falls off of it and decides it isn't worth the effort
------

For I Have Sinned [3] →
pairing: fratboy!peter x reader
warnings: there’s no smut (yet) but the fic is 18+. innocence kink.
prompt: peter came home for the holidays and much to his dismay, you were the new girl next door.
<<two
Winter break went by too quickly for Peter’s liking. He spent most days with you, if not every single day. Maybe that’s why he dreaded for it to be over, he didn’t want to miss you. Half of the days were spent doing casual activities, taking you ice skating, to the arcade, subway trips downtown, more ice skating. You were a pro ice skater by the end of the week. And when it was too late to do anything, you spent every night on your balcony, Peter on his as you guys talked until either one of you got tired. Aunt May wondered why you guys didn’t just have sleepovers at this point; Peter was quick to remind May that you guys weren’t eight and would your mom allow it? Probably not.
He got you a christmas gift, and you got him one too. He got you a pair of ice skates, so you could go regularly while he was back at school. You almost fainted; how did he know this would be the perfect gift for you?
You actually made him a winter care package. You packed a sweater with a matching hat and gloves, along with your favorite tea and candle. You even packed tissues, the ones with Vicks in them, so he wouldn’t get rashes along the underside of his nose.
Peter perched against his desk, his chin being held by his palm. He missed you, that was a no brainer, but why was he not able to get you out of his mind? Before he knew it, his teacher had finished the lecture and everyone was packing their things for the next class. Luckily for Peter, he didn’t have any. He had his mind set on going to see the girl who’d been wandering his mind all week. Until he saw a familiar face waiting at the door for him.
“Mr. Stark?” Peter squinted. This was a surprise.
“Hey kid,” the retired man had greeted. He still got it though, the flare and cleaned up man he was. He rocked the dad-bod pretty well too. Peter could make out more of the grey flakes that became more evident in his appearance.
“Hey? What are you doing out here?” while they walked side-by-side to the parking lot, they chatted a little bit, made small talk. Morgan was just starting school and Tony let Peter know that he was more than welcome to come over for dinner in between all these exams and finals.
Once they got seated in Tony’s car, Tony took Peter for a cruise.
“I know we left the suits in the past,” Tony jumped straight into it, not hesitating to get to the point. “But there’s a matter at hand. It’s a situation that cannot go unnoticed.”
“Mr. Stark?” Peter questioned with furrowed eyebrows. After all, it was Tony who initiated everyone to lay low. Sure, Tony had many near-death experiences, but he had a family. He couldn’t fit the superhero life anymore without jeopardizing them. And Peter? He was still a teenager. Steve was gone. Settling down was probably the best option for the Avengers. But here Tony was years later, asking to save the day again.
“There is someone,” Tony took only a moment to shut his eyes and sigh deeply. “Someone from my past. Someone I couldn’t takedown. And I thought they were gone for good. But they just popped up on my radar and I think they can potentially be dangerous for our city.” Tony explained.
“Okay... Okay? But- Mr. Stark, why me?”
“I don’t have anyone else to call. Natasha went to finish unsettled business elsewhere, Birdman went west with the Winter Soldier. Plus, you’re a native of New York and that’s what I need right now.”
Peter thought about it. It overwhelmed him to be in his suit again. It’d been so long since he went by the name Spiderman. He knew Tony wouldn’t ask if it wasn’t important, hell, he’d probably face it himself if it wasn’t that big of a deal.
“Okay, Mr. Stark. I’ll do it.” Peter reluctantly agreed.
“Alright.” Tony began tapping buttons on his car and holographic reports appeared in front of Peter. His stomach turned. “So, we’re looking for Leslie Cain.” he knew. Of course he knew. He hadn’t even realized he had tuned Tony out. How could he have not known? This was the woman who lived next door to his aunt, his only family.
“Mr. Stark? I think I’m gonna be sick.” the feeling was overwhelming. The superhero duties coming back all at once; he wasn’t focused on fighting crime anymore, that wasn’t his thing anymore. He was only worried about the essay he had procrastinated on and the carton of eggs he left in his mini fridge before the holiday break. Maybe that’s why his spidey senses weren’t working.
He was spending time around that lady too! Of course, it wasn’t as much as he was spending with you but- holy shit, what was he going to do about you? Did you know about your mother’s tendencies? Did Mr. Stark know Leslie had a child?
“Mr. Stark?” Peter’s voice wavered. “How do you know Leslie?” he wanted to know. Their past couldn’t have been too deep, right?
“She...” Tony sighed, rubbing his temples. “I had a one-night stand with her a long ago, before I even met Pepper. We eventually started seeing each other and then I found out she was crazy, saying the gods would be upset if she had settled for a mortal like me or whatever. She was a devil worshiper or whatever, so I ran for the hills.”
Holy shit, holy shit. What the fuck? So, she was a witch of some sort? Is that was Mr. Stark was trying to imply? What the fuck are the odds that an old flame of Tony’s moved in next door to his prodigy? New York was huge, so why settle for Midtown? Did Leslie know that Peter was Spiderman? Was May in danger?
“Leslie’s my aunt’s neighbor.” Peter’s face paled as Tony stopped the car with an abrupt halt. “She knows, right? Leslie has got to know I used to work with you, otherwise, why else would she and her daughter be living next door to Aunt May, right?” Peter panicked and thought out loud, running his fingers through his hair.
“Wait a second, what?” Tony did a double-take at Peter. “She’s got a daughter?”
“Yeah.”
“That’s impossible.” it wasn’t normal to see Tony like this. Normally, he was a few steps ahead, knew all the facts. But he was rusty.
“No, it’s not. I’m her friend, she’s like, my age.” Peter managed to get out, tugging at the sides of his hair.
Tony cursed under his breath.
“What Mr. Stark?” Peter grew more and more concerned. He should have waited for the terms and conditions before agreeing.
“Nothing. I need to do more research. I’ll reach out to you when I know more. In the mean time, stay away from Leslie. Even if that means inviting your aunt out here.” Tony instructed sternly.
“Are you kidding me? I’m not going to invite my aunt to my frat house where I live with my frat brothers.”
“Okay, then get coffee or something. Just stay away from Leslie. She’s bad news.”
“But Mr. Stark-“ the door was opened and Peter was shoved out of the car.
“Remember what I said!” and he drove off.

WORKSHOP SHOUT OUT | SKATEISM | VANS US OPEN
It’s the last weekend of the Vans US Open of Surfing, but we’re not ready to go just yet!
We’ve still got some of our favorite workshops over the week to share –like the fun folks over at SKATEISM who hosted a zine making workshop at Van Doren Village. We caught up with Tobias from SKATEISM to find out what folks created, more about the zine making process, and what special gift they're giving out on this final weekend.
Introduce yourselves and tell us a little bit about Skateism. My name is Tobias Coughlin-Bogue, and I’m the online editor for SKATEISM. The magazine was founded by Christos “Moch” Simos and Oisin “Osh” Tammas in Athens. It began as just a little local Athens skate blog in 2012, but when Osh signed on they started doing more English-language posts and international coverage. Moch is one of the only out skaters in Greece, and at some point he and Osh realized that the stories they were most interested in telling centered around that… as well as some other areas of skateboarding they felt had been neglected like skate charity, global scenes, and women’s skateboarding. They also realized they wanted to make a magazine, as a place for underrepresented populations in skateboarding to see themselves in a proper print publication. Two years and four issues later, that’s exactly what they’ve done and we’re very proud to present Issue #4 as the Pride issue, focusing on the experiences of LGBTQ+ skaters.
Take us through your workshop and what were you doing with attendees at the Vans US Open? Essentially we facilitated everything to make a zine except shooting photos or binding the final copies. We had prints of images on hand for people to cut and glue onto cardstock, creating what’s called a “master” page. Masters are what zinemakers make photocopies of that they then bind together into their final zine. We started the workshop by talking a little bit about what zines are and why we think they’re so cool. We covered the zinemaking process, and then dived right into it.
What about zinemaking do you think is super fun and accessible? Zinemaking was a fundamental part of the pre-internet skate culture. While it isn’t exactly a necessity anymore, when it comes to communicating our own unique visions of skateboarding it’s still super fun to do. It forces you to take all the things that catch your eye at an event like the US Open, that might be a quick Insta story or something, and put them all down on a page together in a thoughtful way. Plus we like writing about skating, and zines incorporate a lot more text than some of the forms of storytelling we do on social media these days.
As far as being accessible, well zines were kind of the social media in skateboarding (and punk and queer scenes too) before social media existed. They were cheap to make and there was a broad network of people sharing and exchanging them around the country, all interested in the same kind of subcultural topics. If you had an idea you wanted to share, you could just paste the images and words that capture it best to some backing paper and get to photocopying. Then mail it out to a distro or drop it off at the skate shop and — boom — you’re a publisher.
Obviously a lot more work goes into what we do with something like SKATEISM, which takes hours and hours of reporting and editing and designing to make, but I at least got into the world of skate media via zines, and I have a huge soft spot for them. For what I do, and what a lot of people getting into media these days do, learning to publish fast and loose is actually really helpful, because that’s the pace digital media operates at.
What type of materials did you have on-hand for folks to work with? We shot a few photos of the first weekend of the event on Kodak Fun Savers (a very accessible and enjoyable way to source art for your zine!), and made photocopies of the best exposures. Plus, we had copies of some pages from past issues of SKATEISM… And of course all the scissors, glue, card stock, staplers, and other stuff folks needed to put together their own master pages. We encouraged attendees to supplement the images we’ve provided with writing and drawing that documents their own experience at the event!
Are there any rules to zinemaking? Have a good time doing it and don’t be hateful. That’s about it.
Any tips you’ve learned over the years for readers who may want to try creating a zine on their own? Just start doing it. To borrow a concept from Ira Glass, you know what you like to see on the page, so keep trying until the stuff you make starts to look like that. Don’t stress out too much if it doesn’t work out at first. Technically speaking, it’s really important to think in terms of spreads (two individual pages facing each other is one spread), and understand that a magazine is essentially a bunch of sheets of paper stacked up, stapled, and folded in half. Making sure that the individual pages in the spreads line up correctly can be tricky, so it might help to take a bunch of blank sheets of paper, bind them, write page numbers on them, then remove the staples and use them as a template for what to paste on each master page as you’re working.
What other zine techniques can people incorporate besides cutting and pasting? Doing it by hand is obviously the classic method, and will get you the most zine scene cred. But I am not ashamed to admit that, after two issues of cutting and pasting my first zine, I started scanning my photos and putting it all in InDesign. There is no shame in using layout software, and it will give you a whole new appreciation for how much thought and effort goes into every single print publication you ever read. It’s not just what they’re writing and which photos they’re publishing, but where on the page that stuff is, where it is in relation to the other stuff, what color and font things are, what angles they’re tilted at, what the background is, and so on... It’s definitely a different look and feel than handmade, but now that design software is so accessible, we think it’s every bit as DIY.
What did participants create and walk away with after the workshop? Well, besides hands on experience making zine master pages, we’re going to take our favorite masters and make a limited run of a compilation zine to give out on the final weekend of the event.
So we’d like anyone who enjoyed the workshop to come back and grab a copy of that! And failing that, just a better understand of the zinemaking, DIY ethos that skateboarding was built on. Skateboarders have always made their own spots, their own rules, and their own fun. That definitely applies to their media too.
Who are some of your favorite zine makers? In the areas we’re focused on, you can’t not mention Xem Skaters by the Swedish nonbinary skater Marie Dabbadie. They’ve been making a rad, unapologetically genderqueer zine for years, and have done loads to change the conversation around gender in skateboarding. Of course, The Skate Witches are killing it too. In terms of general zines that I like, I grew up volunteering at the Zine Archive and Publishing Project in Seattle, which had copies of really rare ‘90s skate zines like Pool Dust, so I tripped out on those a lot growing up. Not ‘cause I’ve ever actually skated a real pool, just because they had this really scrappy, no bullshit aesthetic and made skateboarding look so cool.
Recently, I was on a team for Thrasher’s “Zine Thing” Challenge in Seattle, which gave people two weeks to shoot a zine with Fun Savers; two weeks to do writing, editing, and layout; and then gave awards in different categories. Looking through the compilation book of all the entries still blows my mind. It’s a great reminder that skateboarding is full of cool, creative people, and everyone has a wildly different experience of it. I still can’t pick a favorite, although Leo Bañuelos' ’Skaters in Drag’ article is pretty legendary.
Three words that describe what Skateism is all about? The underground and overlooked. Sorry that's four!
Who or what were you most excited to check out at the Vans US Open? Personally, I’m excited to finally skate Cherry Park (nearby). But that’s just because my joints are falling apart and I can only skate low ledges. At the Open, I was excited to see all the pros skate the course, especially the women. Women’s skateboarding has been growing at an insane pace in the last few years, and the level of talent is out of control. When I started skating, I never thought I would see little girls back-smithing huge hubbas and female pros filming back-tail-kickflip-outs for their video parts, but here we are. The rate of progression is so exciting to me, and I feel like people will definitely be throwing down for the event.

AHHHH OK AWESOME
Welcome to the madness that is my EAH ocs I'll start with them 😭😭 specifically Augustine!!
Augustine Ella is the eldest daughter of Cinder Ella and Kit Ella (and basically my self insert)! She's the older sister of Ashlyn Ella, and set to inherite their mothers destiny. Augustine is a year and a half older than Ashlyn, and is a grade ahead of her in school. Her classmates consist of some canon characters including but not limited to - Ramona Badwolf, Jillian Beanstalk, Jocelyn 'JJ' Hooke (she's a background character, I just gave her a name), and Daring Charming, along with some of my ocs, including Sylvester Bishop, Dorian Dormouse, Nacrine Neptune, Katherine Boots, Oleander Beauty, Juliette Pendragon and Courageux Lâche to name a few! She's commonly referred to as Auggie or Augs by close friends and family.
Unlike her sister, Augustine is fair skinned and covered in freckles. She has long, wavy, auburn hair that's either tied in a ponytail or loose. She's on the shorter side, around 5'3 or so, and is lithe in her build. Her normal every day attire looks something similar to thile cottagecore aesthetic, but it also consists of sweaters, leggings, skinny jeans, etc. (I'll post a moodboard of her outfit inspo at some point)
Auggie and Ashlyn both run the Glass Slipper together, so it's not uncommon to find her there when she isn't at school or with her friends. Speaking of friends, her closest friend is Oleander Beauty (Briar Beauty's older brother) and they can be seen usually glued to each other at the hip. They were betrothed at one point, but they both have come to an agreement that they feel more like brother and sister than anything romantic. Their parents are aware of this developmemt and have agreed to respect their children's wishes (Mostly just because Augustine is with Dexter, another prince from a noble family who might be her prince charming, and Oleander still has his choice of princesses to get his pricne charming destiny secured). Auggie is currently happily dating Dexter Charming and Oleander is pining over C.A Cupid. Augustine endlessly teases Oleander about his crush on Cupid, and he in return teases her about her mushy, sweet relationship with Dexter.
Augustine is a pro ice-skater and sword fighter. Shes currently trying to teach Dexter more about ice-skating. She and Oleander have competed together in ice-skating competitions together, and so have she and Ashlyn! She's also an avid writer, and in her down time she's drafting novels that likely won't see the light of day. Auggie currently owns a lion she named Theodore, and he's been her loyal companion for about 4 years at this point. Little does she know he's actually Courageux who was put under a curse by the son of the wicked witch of the west four years ago and whisked to Ever After from Oz and landed in the courtyard of Cinder Ella's palace.
As far as the destiny conflict goes, Augustine wants her destiny and is excited for it, especially since she is sure Dexter is her prince charming. While she understands why Raven (and others like Briar) wouldn't want their destinies, she has no qualms with her own so she doesn't really actively participate in the destiny conflict.
If you wanna pick another oc to hear about just lmk I loved rambling about Auggie 😭😭
I need someone to let me yell to them about my mh and eah ocs

STEREK BINGO 2017 THEMES!
Here they are! Sterek Bingo 2017 themes! You can also see the list of themes here. ENJOY CREATING!!!!!!
Harry Potter: No matter Slytherin or Hufflepuff, Gryffindor or Ravenclaw, all houses are welcome in a Harry Potter AU! You don't even have to use houses, or Hogwarts at all! Perhaps branch out and use Beauxbatons or Ilvermorny, or maybe not even a school. Pro Quidditch player x Magical Creature instructor anyone?
Friends To Lovers: There's nothing more amazing in a relationship than being able to be best friends with your lover...except for when your best friend BECOMES your lover. From Monica and Chandler, to Scully and Mulder, the friends to lovers trope has been around for ages. And now it's time to give Sterek that treatment, no matter if it's canon or AU. Time to turn platonic snuggles into romantic snuggles!
Magic/Were!Stiles: Let's be honest here, this boy is something! Now it's time for you to decide what! Witch, werewolf, druid, werefox, raven, White Stag...the possibilities are so endless, and here's your outlet for choosing any one you want! The only thing Stiles can't be for this theme is human.
Top/Bottom: Top!Stiles/bottom!Derek, top!Derek/bottom!Stiles, or my personal favorite: Switches! No matter what you like, I think it's safe to say that the theme is pretty self-explanatory. Of course this theme doesn't have to relate to sex if you don't want it to- it could just as easily relate to bunk beds!
Kids: What's better than kids? From babies to teenagers, kids are what makes the world go round, and there's nothing cuter than Stiles and Derek with them. (Except maybe Stiles and Derek as kids themselves, but that's your choice to make!) No matter if it's baby!Sterek or Sterek with babies, if it includes kids, it's welcome for this theme!
Coffee Shop: Somehow, someway, Coffee Shop AUs are the single staple of the AU world. A fandom's not a fandom without a coffee shop AU! But there are always ways to make them unique...a coffee shop for the supernatural perhaps? Maybe Derek is allergic to coffee? A coffee shop that ran out of coffee? Put your creativity to the test by making a Coffee Shop AU as unique- or cliche'!- as you want!
Horror: From things that go bump in the night, to the morbid and macabre, horror is one of the great staple genres of media, and now it's time to add a dash of spooky to Sterek! It could be anything from a light Goosebumps-esque idea, or you could try to out horror American Horror Story. Bring your scares and something to cover your eyes, it's about to be Halloween in May!
Royalty: Kings and princes and knights, oh my! This is the thing that royalty AUs are made of! It could be set in the distant past, or you can modernize it. King!Stiles, prince!Derek, forbidden love or arranged marriages - there are a variety of different ways to do a royalty AU, all it has to include is, well, royalty!
Dark!Stiles: We all have a little darkness within us. And even before season 3B, so much of the fandom adored dark!Stiles. Now we're bringing him back from...the grave? Well now that depends on you, any reason for his darkness and in any way that he is, we want to see it! Villainous, evil, possessed, or morally gray, it doesn't matter. Bring ALL of the darkness to our cutest psychopath!
Derek Returns: What Sterek fan- hell, what DEREK fan- DIDN'T wish Derek had come back for season five? Or season six? Well there are probably some, but we aren't some of them! Derek coming back to Beacon Hills is the theme here, and it can be in season five, season six, or even post-canon. We just want to get him back by any means necessary, and you get to decide what those means are!
Comfort: I think it's safe to say that Derek and Stiles have both had rough lives, surrounded with death and misery and pain...now it's time for you to make that right! No matter if it's hurt/comfort or all comfort, if it's a heavy, emotional piece, or if it's just Derek wrapped in a blanket and making a blanket fort for Stiles, the idea is to be warm, happy, and most of all- comfortable!
Soulmates: Ahh, soulmate Aus...one of the best things that fandom has to offer that you don't really see in mass media. Worlds where you're born with a soul mark on your skin, or a clock counting down to the moment you'll meet your soulmate, or see only black and white until you meet them...soulmate AUs have the potential to be incredibly fluffy, comical, angsty, or tragic as you'd like. There are essentially no rules here! We always knew these two were destined for each other...
Alive Hales: There's so much to mourn with the Hale family. Laura, Talia, and all of the Hales we didn't know...so it's time to bring them back to life! Be it canon-divergent or AU, entire family or just Laura, it doesn't matter. It's time to put your spin on Derek's family! Let us meet your version of the Hales- after they meet Stiles, of course!
Meet-Cute: "Meet-cute" is, of course, a relative term. From the cliche rom-com meetings, to the sort of Munster-esque anarchy that only Stiles could consider cute, the goal is to create a meeting for these two lovable losers that's- well, CUTE! AU? Probably, but boy would it be interesting to see how you could interpret it for canon! Let us see your ideal cuteness level, sprinkled, of course, over Sterek!
Enemies To Lovers: Like friends to lovers, enemies to lovers is one of the staples of fandom. There's just something so incredible about watching two people who want to kill each other transform into two people who love each other unconditionally, and that's exactly what this theme is about! They can be merely at odds, or full out on opposite sides of a war, all that matters is that getting along comes later on for these two frenemies (loverenemies?)
BAMF!Stiles: Stiles Stilinski is a badass. We all know that. Now it's time to highlight it! BAMF!Stiles can be any shade of morality and have any kind of power (or even lack there of) that you want, The only guideline is that he does something that makes everyone else stand back, wide-eyed and open-mouthed, wondering how they got lucky enough to witness such a display of BAMF!
Werewolf Culture: Courting rituals and Alpha symposiums abound, it's time for a lesson in Werewolf Culture! It could be werewolves are known, A/B/O, Teen Wolf canon, or really any universe wherein werewolves exist and have their own communities and social constructs. What matters is that there's something about werewolves that's very different from humans- and it doesn't all come down to the full moon and turning into a wolf.
Little Red Riding Hood: Ahh, the fandom wide favorite fairytale, telling of a red-hood and a wolf... and those are the only requirements! Little Red could be innocent or evil, the wolf could be bad or good, and you don't even have to stick to canon! Little Red Riding Hood Derek x Wolf Stiles? Yes please! As long as those elements are included, it can be as close to or as far from the fairytale as you desire.
Switched Roles: Werewolf!Stiles/human!Derek? Age differences? Alpha!Stiles? Possessed!Derek? Why... this must be a role reversal!! No matter if it's a full on canon rewrite, a reversal of one season, or even just one specific trait (Alpha!Stiles/human!Derek for example) it doesn't matter. As long as something noticeably Derek is now Stiles, and something noticeably Stiles is now Derek. (It might have just been easier for them to switch clothes...)
Mythology: Ahh, mythology. One of the world's greatest- and most diverse- treasures. Every culture has such a vast and rich mythology that it's impossible not to find any to your liking, as it doesn't have to just stick to the average Greek and Roman mythos. Mythology has some of the greatest tales and some of the easiest to adapt. Old world or modern, closely following the story or deeply diverting from it, as long as it has a root in mythology or somewhere, it's welcome here!
Shifted Derek: Who doesn't LOVE a full-shifted wolf!Derek? We certainly love it here! Both in canon and AU, werewolf!Derek just seems to work, and what works possibly best is when he shifts into a real wolf! No matter if it's the freedom he gets from running through the woods, or just the peace of sleeping in the middle of a sunbeam, let Derek's spirit be in it's truest form by letting him be a wolf!
Crossover: There's nothing like a good old fashioned crossover. Be it another TV show, a movie, an anime, a book, or even a musical, all that matters is that it's another source of media that bleeds together with Teen Wolf! Maybe Derek and Stiles meet Dean and Cas, maybe there's an AU where anxious figure-skater!Stiles drunkenly asks superstar figure-skater!Derek to coach him. It doesn't matter as long as there's a second source material involved in your work!
Everybody Lives-Nobody Dies: I bet everyone has at least one person they wish HADN'T died in Teen Wolf. Even if it's pre-canon, now is your chance to bring them back from the grave! Anyone you want, as many people as you want. Let the events of canon slide right off and have an AU or canon-divergence where everyone is alive and happy!
A/B/O: Knotting, heats, scenting, bonding - all of the most well known cliche's of A/B/O (AKA: Omegaverse), One of the most unique concepts fanfiction has ever offered, almost certainly AU (almost), A/B/O is that great theme where you can really build a universe. Create an entirely new world with different laws and social structures and biology. Or you could just have the incredibly fun Alpha/Omega dynamics and call it a day - it's totally up to you! And what's even better, you can take the terms as loosely or as fittingly as you want! Keep them to a very general sense of pack structure, or create an entirely new world order with vastly different biologies and social requirements- it's all up to you!
Superhero: Ever since Tyler Hoechlin literally became Superman, superhero AUs have exploded in the Sterek community! From canon superheros like Superman and Batman, to totally new OC superheros like Black Wolf and Red Bat (or, you know, names that make sense), the superhero genre is one that can be easily explored and is certainly one of the most fun to do. It can be as lighthearted as Supergirl, as dark as Gotham, or something pleasantly in between- it's all up to you to decide!
Pack Mom Stiles: Pack Mom Stiles is one of the earliest staples of the Teen Wolf fandom, and one of my personal favorites. Because you know Stiles is "the mom friend". He doesn't bake cookies and help the kids with his homework, but he does defend his pack at all costs and is liable to take a bat to the head of anyone who breaks one of his friend's hearts! No matter if it's domestic or at war, Pack Mom Stiles is one of the cutest tropes around, and this is the time and place to dedicate a little time to the glue keeping the pack together!
Feral: Ah, feral AUs...no matter if it's Derek or Stiles, one of them is bound to spend just a little bit too much time in the wild, until the wild won't leave them. Perhaps the scariest thing about feral AUs is that they don't actually have to be AU at all. In fact, they can fit in very easily with canon. Maybe Derek comes back from his trip with Braeden, unable to shift out of his wolf form. Maybe Stiles, in trying to escape from the hunt, ended up getting stuck in the woods for a few years. Not to mention the full bounty of possibilities if you make it AU! Bring on the heartache! This is bound to hurt.
Canon Divergent: With only one half season left of Teen Wolf and Derek having been gone for a season and a half already, the chances of Sterek becoming canon- although still possible- are pretty slim. If canon is the one universe where they don't end up together, then it's our job as fans to create millions of universes where they DO! Find the perfect place in canon where you can save the relationship and ensure that whenever this mystical time in the universe is that these two don't end up together, it's NOT today! Not today Satan, not today.
Alpha!Derek/Stiles: There once was a time when Alpha!Derek was canon...and you could re-establish that time now! Miss the Hale pack? Want to create a new one? Just want those pretty red eyes back? Here's your chance to give Derek his power back! Oooor...your chance to allow Derek a time to rest and give that power to Stiles! Because who doesn't love Alpha!Stiles with beta!Derek? Of course, since this is Alpha Derek/Stiles, it could just as easily be both of them. Would they join their packs together? Be at odds with each other? It's your time to decide! Take those red eyes and stick them in whoever you want! As long as it's Derek or Stiles, that is
Wild Card: This is the obligatory bingo square in the very middle where you can do absolutely anything you want! That's right. There's no restriction, no guideline, no THEME! It's your freebie to do anything you may have been wanting to do, but haven't really had the time or inspiration to do until now- here's your chance. Now go forth and create Sterek!

Let It Shine: The Best of The Week
Vince Staples. Photo: Melt Booking
Now that we’re back in the swing of things around town, the shows keep stacking up as summer draws closer. You’ll have plenty of choices this week as the likes of Vince Staples, Thursday, and The Sonics will all be here with local acts filling in the gaps. Houston, here’s how to map out the next seven days.
Wednesday you can start off at Walter’s when the electronic jams of Hawaii’s Mr. Carmack swings by to drop a set. Known for lit live sets and music you can’t help but get down to, the producer-DJ will be here in support of his latest full length Rekindling and new single “Tuesday Wednesday Thursday.” An artist or multiple artists from the Soulection crew will be on as direct support while the get down tunes of Houston’s Hiram goes on prior. Biggs of Mad Decent Records will also be on the bill and Houston’s Eroda One will open things up on the all ages show with doors at 7 pm and tickets between $15 and $20.
On Thursday the Art Car Sneak Peak will be happening over at Discovery Green. See the cars that will be at the parade while enjoying the music of Kermit Ruffins. The all ages and family friendly event gets going around 6 pm and it’s 100% FREE.
The Secret Group will host what sounds like a funny show when TJ Dawe and Kerry Ipema present One Woman Sex & The City: A Parody. The one woman show will recreate all six seasons of the beloved HBO show in what will undoubtedly be something to see for yourself, full of laughs and interesting acting. The all ages show has doors at 7 pm and tickets between $25 and $30.
Nate Bargatze. Photo: Funny Business
Improv will begin their weekend of shows from the always funny antics of Tennessee’s Nate Bargatze. After his 2015 Comedy Central special and album Full Time Magic, this guy has become a household name and seems to get funnier each time I see him. As per all of these shows, two of Houston’s better up and coming comics will serve as feature act and host. The 18 & up shows run through Sunday. The Thursday night show has doors at 7:15 pm with tickets between $17 and $30.
In the ballroom at Warehouse Live, the always popular hip hop of California’s Vince Staples will fill the room when he performs. Staples, here in support of his latest single “BagBak” and last year’s Prima Donna, never disappoints when he performs. The alternative R&B of Orlando’s Kilo Kish will be on as direct support and opener for the all ages show with doors at 8 pm and tickets between $20 and $25.
The Sonics. Photo: Atomic Music Group
Over at Continental Club, Tacoma, Washington garage rock legends The Sonics will be in town to electrify all who attend. These guys dropped a live album last year called Live at Easy Street that proves they can still bring it when they perform. Around since the sixties, with tracks like “Have Love Will Travel,” “Shot Down,” and “The Witch,” this five-piece is an act everyone needs to see in person. Georgia’s The Woggles will bring their brand of maximum R&B to life as direct support and openers for the 21 & up show with doors at 8 pm and tickets for $28.
Stone’s Throw will add a little spice to your week when Dem Damn Dames’ Tifa Tittlywinks hosts her Thursday Tease show. The burlesque affair will feature Iris Le’mour as well as drink specials and music from DJ Browncoat. Add to that burlesque from the upper catwalk and you have an intriguing evening that gets going at 8 pm and is 100% FREE.
At Walter’s you can see the indie pop of NOLA duo Generationals. Closer to new wave than most acts going today, this two piece makes hook heavy tunes that are found all over their latest singles “Avery” and “Turning The Screw.” The synth pop of Baltimore three piece Raindeer will be on as direct support and openers for the all ages show with doors at 8 pm and tickets between $12 and $14.
Ruiners. Photo: Marshall Forse Walker
Notsuoh will have the sludge heavy metal of Oakland’s Dealer by to perform. This three piece makes speedy and murky metal that’s as catchy as it is dark, and their latest release Billionaire Boys Club from this year is pretty damn epic. The never disappointing grind metal of Houston’s Omotai will loudly be on as direct support while the energetic post punk of Houston’s Ruiners will go on prior. The electronic noise of Houston’s Electric Sleep will open the show with doors at 9 pm and a TBA cover.
Mucky Duck will have the entertaining sounds of Houston born and Austin transplant Buenos Diaz. This guy makes the kind of blues influenced guitar rock that’s full of pop influence, catchy hooks, and new wave elements that are kind of like if Elvis Costello was a Texan. His new self titled Buenos Diaz album just dropped, and with tracks like “San Fransymphony,” you should want to catch his set. The 21 & up show has doors at 9:30 pm and tickets between $20 and $22.
Friday you could head to Cactus for an in-store of sorts when pro skater Mike Vallely drops by. Vallely was the last pro street skater at Powell Peralta who embodied the pride that skateboarding was in the eighties. He ushered in a new world of skating at World Industries, and he’s one of the coolest guys you could meet. The all ages event gets going at 3 pm and it’s 100% FREE.
Touche Amore. Photo: Epitaph Records
Later on at House of Blues you should swing by to catch the post hardcore of Thursday. The New Jersey natives have returned to touring, most recently in the 15th anniversary of their album Waiting. If you missed them last year, then this is your chance to catch them in person. The melodic hardcore of England’s Basement will be on hand as direct support while the jangly hardcore of LA’s Touche Amore will open the all ages show with doors at 6:30 pm with tickets between $25 and $39.50.
The always fun and entertaining Art Car Ball will take place at Hermann Square at City Hall. Food and drinks, performances from Kiki Maroon and Ms Yet, as well as music from Calliope Musicals and Souldig are just some of what will be on hand. There’s more information available here for the event hosted by The Suffers’ Kam Franklin. The doors are at 8 pm and tickets run between $30 and $35.
Out at Smart Financial Centre, you can get your laughs in when Steve Martin and Martin Short will entertain you with their “An Evening You Will Forget for The Rest of Your Life.” The show that promises onstage banter, banjo playing, and comedy is something that fans of Martin especially have been clamoring after for years since the iconic comedian walked away from doing stand-up. The all ages event has doors at 8 pm and tickets from $89.50.
The Orwells. Photo: Kelly Puleo/Pitch Perfect PR
The rock of Chicago’s The Orwells will be on full display over at The Secret Group. These guys were pretty much right outta’ high school when they formed, and their latest record Terrible Human Beings is pretty damn catchy. They’re also known to throw an energetic live show, and while direct support and openers haven’t been listed yet, that could change by showtime. The all ages show has doors at 8 pm and tickets between $19 and $23.
Satellite Bar will host the indie folk rock of Houston’s Alex Riddle. You might not know Riddle, but his infectious tunes are all over his debut from last year, Happy Daggers, and he’s pretty impressive to see in person. The folk rock of Grisbee will go on beforehand while the folk pop of Sam Turner and the Cactus Cats will open things up for the show filled with bands that can write some catchy tunes. The 18 & up show has doors at 8 pm and a TBA cover.
Ape Machine. Photo: Ripple Music
Rudyard’s will handle all the heavy rock you want when the throwback rock of Portland’s Ape Machine returns to town. These guys sound like it’s 1978 and you’re just a step away from getting hauled into jail for having too much fun. Their latest release was a single, but their 2011 album War To Head still sounds timeless. Fittingly, the murky and heavy handed stoner rock of Houston’s The Dirty Seeds will be on as direct support while the fuzzy and thick guitar of Mr Plow will go on beforehand. Houston’s Pyreship will open the 21 & up show with doors at 9 pm and a $10 cover.
Continental Club will host the swamp boogie of Austin’s Honky. Featuring Jeff Pinkus of Butthole Surfers, this band is like ZZ Top on speed and while their live shows are always impressive, their latest release Corduroy is their strongest to date. The one man band insanity of Houston’s D. Kosmo will be on as direct support and opener for the 21 & up show with doors at 10 pm and a TBA cover.
Saturday you can soak up all of the fun at the 30th annual Art Car Parade. The Houston tradition, starting at Smith & Pease, there promises to be over 250 bikes, cars, skaters and more decorated to delight all especially with Cheech Marin as grand marshall. The all ages and family friendly parade itself begins at 2 pm, while the pre-party also known as The Starting Line Party begins at 11 am. The price range runs between FREE and $150, depending on when you want to get the party started. There’s more information available here.
Mike Vallely. Photo: Rob Wallace/Street Plant
Over at 4202 Screen Printing you can catch pro skater and musician Mike Vallely perform tracks from his upcoming new EP The New Arms. Vallely is a one of a kind guy, he rarely rolls through here, and just the fact that he’s coming is enough reason to check out what he’ll do. There’s also music from Khobretti, Baron Von Bomblast, and many more as well as art food, drinks and fun. The all ages event has more information here, it’s FREE, and it gets going around 2 pm.
Walter’s will host day one of the Take This Fest And Shove It two day festival. Headlined by Austin punk legends The Next, the fest should be worth showing up for. With sets from NOLA’s Buck Biloxi and His Fucks, Austin’s Cheap Fur, NOLA’s Die Rotzz, and California’s Off Center & the Holes alongside locals like The Mahas, The Cops, and Killer Hearts to name a few. Things get going with doors at 4 pm and tickets between $15 and $20 for one day, or $25 for a weekend pass on the all ages event. There’s a full rundown of the lineup here.
You can get all of your pop feels when pop diva Ariana Grande drops by Toyota Center to perform. While mainstream pop isn’t usually my thing, Grande’s latest release Dangerous Woman from last year is definitely full of pop jams that are super catchy. Little Mix and Victoria Monet will be on hand to help open the all ages show with doors at 6:30 pm and tickets between $29.95 and $199.95.
Miears. Photo: Arturo Olmos
Over at Nightingale Room you can get down with Houston’s Kay Weathers. Now living in Louisiana, Weathers isn’t here as much as she used to be though her debut release Songs For Lucy is pretty amazeballs and her live sets are a trip. Houston’s Miears will bring her dark synth sounds on as opener for the 21 & up show with doors at 7 pm and it’s 100% FREE.
Rockefeller’s will host the ska of LA’s The Aggrolites. Normally when you hear modern ska it’s just a pop punk band with horns, but these guys take their sound back to the roots and have a more reggae core. The result is a killer live show and while they just dropped three new songs due for a proper release, their 2011 album Rugged Road still holds up. Houston’s longtime purveyors of ska and killer live shows, Los Skarnales will be on as direct support and openers for the 18 & up show with doors at 8 pm and tickets between $15 and $20.
At Anderson Fair you can catch an intimate set and the album release for John Egan. Egan is a tough cookie to describe, as each release he drops has more and more depth. His latest, Magnolia City is his most diverse to date, offering up hints of blues and Americana without being a direct result of either. The show is all ages with doors at 8 pm and a TBA cover.
Kingdom. Photo: Primary Talent
Over at 2005 Commerce Street, you can get your groove on for Trust Me Daddy: Vol 3, this edition featuring KINGDOM. The LA producer is playing a few dates around the country, Houston being his only Texas date and his latest drop Tears In the Club is definitely on point. The Latin club duo of Santa Muerte will be on as direct support while San Antonio’s House of Kenzo will do their thing beforehand. Miguel Flaco & Noey Lopez will open things up with a back to back set as well as visual arts and performance art as well. The BYOB and open bar show is all inclusive with more information here and a $15 cover.
Sunday you could head back to Walter’s for day two of the Take This Fest and Shove It festival. Opened up by Saint Krusher and closed by Cop Warmth, the second day has sets from Houston punk legends MyDolls, The Gilligans, and many more. There’s more information here with doors at 2 pm and tickets between $15 and $25.
Continental Club will get loud when surf rock guitarist and all around guitar slinging legend Dick Dale makes his return to town. Dale, best known for his hit song “Miserlou,” also has a slew of hits ranging from “Nitrus” to “Hava Nagila.” His sets are always loud and amazing, and now that he’s up in age this could be one of your last chances to see him do his thing. The 21 & up show has doors at 7:30, he’s sold out multiple times in that past, so if you wanna’ go grab your $40 ticket here.
Over at Rudyard’s the rock n’ roll of Denver’s Colfax Speed Queen will be on hand for all to witness. Literally like an old school rock band, these guys have made quite the name for themselves and their new 7” Paper Cuts is pretty great. Houston’s Cornish Game Hen will bring their intriguing sound on as direct support while Nite Shift will open things up on the 21 & up show with doors at 8 pm and an $8 cover.
Acid Mothers Temple. Photo: Paradigm Agency
Tuesday at White Oak Music Hall upstairs, the never disappointing insanity of Acid Mothers Temple will swing by to play. This Japanese psych rock band is part epiphany and part acid trip, as their live shows are pretty mind blowing. They’ve dropped all sorts of releases under different offshoots and names, but their last under AMT was 2009’s bizarre sounding Are We Experimental?. The psych noise rock of LA’s Babylon will be on as direct support and opener for the all ages show with doors at 7 pm and tickets between $10 and $13.
At Walter’s you can catch the youth punk of Austin’s The Real Cost. Here on the last day of their tour in support of their release III, these guys sound pretty heavy. Of course, Houston’s Dress Code will bring their hardcore punk on as direct support while the heavy handed punk of Houston’s The Pose will go on prior. No Come will also be on the bill while the punk of Houston’s Erupt will open the all ages show with doors at 8 pm and an $8 cover.
That’s about all that’s happening around town this week. No matter what you decide to do, remember that drinking like an adult and getting home safe are in everyone’s best interest.
