TMNT 2012: Actor AU

An AU where TMNT 2012 is a literal TV show and everyone are just actors on a set.

Here’s what goes on behind the scenes:

Raph and Mona Lisa fell in love on set filming the show and became a couple during filming. When filming season 4, Raph developed an actual crush on his costar, so after filming season 4, he asked her out and she accepted, admitting that she fell for him too while filming their scenes together. They are dating in both the show and real life, and even after the show ended they're still going strong.

Karai is a famous child actor. She's been acting since she was a little girl.

Splinter and Shredder are long time friends and always have fun on set together, they’ve been doing movies/shows together since they were young men so they consider each other brothers 

This is April’s first big role in a show, she was always a background character in her other jobs before she got her big break

Mikey likes pranking people on set, this infuriates the crew

Raph likes to tease people when they screw up their lines or takes, but god forbid you laugh at Raph if he messes up his lines 

April and Donnie are besties on set, not romantic, but they enjoy pretending to be a couple in the show: “he/she’s the best fake boyfriend/girlfriend I’ve ever had!”

Leo and Karai are uncomfortable with the relationship their characters have and constantly argue with the writers to fix it or change it 

Slash originally audition for Raphael’s role, he didn’t get the part, but the director liked him so much that he created a character just for him so he could be on the show

Karai knew Shinigami outside of the show (they worked on another show together years prior). When the director wanted to add a new character in season 4, Karai recommended her friend for the part, so Shini got the roll and was casted as Karai’s second in command

Leatherhead started by doing community theater, so being on a tv set was a big change for him

Casey keeps hitting on his female co stars 

Karai and Mona Lisa do not get along on set

Leo's voice change was written into the show because of an actual injury that happened to him before they began filming season 3

The plot twist of Irma being a robot really pissed off Irma (she and the director don’t get along and he did that twist out of spite), eventually she was able to find a loophole and return to the show to play Rook.

Leo has a long term girlfriend outside of the show, it’s Lotus Blossom ;)

Casey always shows up late and keeps on being threatened by the director that he’ll get fired (he knows he won’t be fired) 

Mikey and Renet are long time co stars, starring together in other shows from the past (reference to their VAs Greg Cipes and Ashley Johnson) 

Tang Shen is a tv star legend and her appearance on the show was as a guest star

Tiger Claw is a new popular action movie star. Splinter and Shredder are his idols that he grew up watching. 

Timothy got fired from the set for accidentally destroying filming equipment. That’s why he never came back

Anya - Janine Ditullo. She doesn't really have any big roles but she's Brendan's mom from the show Home Movies. She's snarky in a way I think Anya would be before anything went down.

Curly - Craig T Nelson. Specifically as his role Coach. Think he also has a sort of middle age voice

Daisuke - Greg Cipes but specifically when he's voicing Kevin Eleven as a teen and his voice has that deeper register. I think he just sounds a little punkish.

Jimmy - Steve Buscemi specifically in Parting Glances. I don't think his voice is loud but more shrill? He's a nasally fellow to me whose voice is intimidating because it shouldn't be so when he says stuff it just sound wrong. Like Randall Boggs. He'd be on his kin list. He's scarier when he's quiet.

Swansea - Ed O'Neill just because I think Jay (Modern Family) fits his general demeanor but also Al (Married with Children). Sort of rough, dry and tired but with that sort of comfort only a dad could have.

Now for other general stuff:

Anya knows how to finger quilt, tried to show Daisuke but he just can't get it, secretly smug about it.

Curly is like a gym bro sim. A good distressor for him is either jogging around the Tulpar or like working out like a freak in his room.

Daisuke has a shitty moped he bought himself after a summer of mowing lawns. It was his first purchase with his own real money and he got attached cause his parents were super proud!

He also thinks it makes him look badass even though it sputters every time he starts it.

Swansea likes taking pictures with his family and wife and even the crew but treats it like a whole ordeal. Fusses about people fixing their faces but is always happy with the results no matter how goofy

Jimmy refused to let Anya sleep in medical after crash. He explained it as not wanting to "disturb" Curly...

Swansea once accidently called Daisuke one of his kids names when he got irritated with him. Made the kids day in a way

Curly does not react to any level of sour, likes citrus and calls it sweet and refreshing, war heads are like jolly ranchers to him.

Anya has a very nice singing voice and Daisuke happily jokes and encourages her to get into the indie scene. Did choir as a kid

Jimmy knows a bit of Spanish through osmosis from jobs he's worked. Mostly knows how to talk shit and directions

Tells Curly he's mostly just saying basic stuff but its real vitriolic towards him that he just translates to like general compliments/jokes. He is still just a WHITE man

Anya reads who done it mystery murder books and makes fun of all the obvious twists and how they glaze the detective MC.

Curly lets Jimmy sit in the Captain's seat because when he doesn't Jimmy is noticeably meaner and more scathing to him.

Anya was planning to get a cat after a conversation with Curly about feeling lonely living in her apartment. Was gonna name it Polle as an in joke before everything happened....

Sexuality speed round: Anya is bi no real preference, very open about it. Curly doesn't label himself and kinda just goes with the moment. Daisuke is bi but a larger preference for girls, has a friend that everyone thinks he dating tho. Swansea had experiences in his youth and that's all he'll say on it other than a few comments here or there. Jimmy is straight but in a way where you here him talk about gay people and know he's current experiences... like the other day.

Yeah heres some more I always hold back cause like what if y'all don't want all of them at once? I think they all had family dinner as a crew but it always felt like an awkward thanksgiving with your family from a wide political spectrum... ergo Jimmy always said some shit and make someone storm off from the table.

My unpopular Beast Boy opinions:

I understand that I am cringe but I know that I am free.

1. Don't love BBrae. I feel like it too often condenses two complex characters into annoying stereotypes.

2. Don't like Greg Cipes voice for BB. I'm ready for him to pass the torch on for the next iteration instead of just constantly jumping from reboot to reboot.

3. In professional products, Garfield works best as a supporting character.

4. I prefer it when Garfield is a little younger than the rest of the cast. He's a lot more charming and a lot more forgivable that way.

5. Leading from the last point, I don't care if he gets frozen in time or stuck at a certain age. His stories work best in the 13-17 age range. I don't care at all if comic characters get age-frozen in general so, that's just a byproduct of a seperate post.

7. His Young Justice iteration is ass. I got up to the Teen Titans Go crossover ep and completely gave up on the show.

8. DC animated cinematic universe Beast Boy is S-tier.

I went to Missouri Anime Fest! I had fun for as long as I got to stay there (the guys who came with me wanted to leave early because they’re party poopers 💀). I didn’t get to get as many pictures as I’d have liked because of this. I saw so many awesome cosplayers! Luckily, there was at least another Teen Titan I could get a picture with (I was Terra) lol. 

Greg Cipes wasn’t there, which was a bummer. Apparently he cancelled and they just… never put it on the website. I literally lapped the place like three times and couldn’t find his table, so I asked a staff member and they were basically like, "oh yeah, he cancelled lol." At least I got to see Greg Baldwin and Dante Basco though!

It was so cute, Greg Baldwin was showing everyone his tattoos, one representing Iroh and the other was Aku (Samurai Jack). There was actually tea cups on the table you could buy for him to sign and I considered getting one tbh. He asked all of us in line if we wanted to sing Secret Tunnel with him. So we sang Secret Tunnel with Uncle Iroh! And you could probably hear us across the hall. And since Dante and his tables were a little apart (the guests’ tables weren’t right next to each other), when they split off, Dante told him "see you later, Uncle." 🥺💖 When I saw Dante, he asked me what Zuko quote I wanted and my brain short circuited, so he put a classic on there, but after I left I realized what I should’ve had him put. "That’s rough, buddy." I say it all the time. I can’t believe I forgot 😭 I didn’t talk to him as long as I did Greg because that was around the time whine babies wanted to leave 😒 and also I was nervous and didn’t know what all to say. He liked my cosplay though!

There was one stand I really loved and kept coming back to. Twst is currently my fav game and I hardly see stuff for it anywhere, so I was really excited to see this booth had some stuff for it! And I bought every single one of the acrylic stands. I love them 🩵 Because it was such a big purchase, they gave me a discount ^^ If they see this somehow, thank you! I also came back later and bought a Grim pin because he’s a precious baby boy and I love him. I’ll post the acrylic close ups in a different post!

The Winx poster is from the artist I bought the Grim pin and Twst acrylics from. I was gonna buy some pillows, stickers, and keychains from them, too, but I wanted to make sure I still had money left to take home lmao. Maybe one day if I see them at a con or online again I’ll get the pillows and keychains. 

I love silly earrings, so I bought some and some more pins at another booth.

Okay, so... I've been holding onto this for a long time, & I really want to get it off my chest.

So I attended a con years ago with my SO. I was feeling particularly anxious & unwell, so I basically stayed mute the entire day. When I found out Greg Cipes would be there, I got super excited because I love Beast Boy from the Teen Titans cartoon of the 00s, Mikey is my fave ninja turtle, & he's done a couple other roles I enjoyed.

When we got in line, I wrote a message to my SO saying how I was so nervous that I don't think I would be able to speak to Cipes. He sympathized & said he'd try to explain in a roundabout way why I wasn't talking. I sincerely appreciated his effort & agreed to the plan.

I finally got up to meet Cipes, & my SO goes onto say on my behalf, "Hey, this is Lucia, & she's a big fan of your work as BB & Mikey!" I smiled at Cipes, who gave me a confused look and a forced half smile as he said, "Does Lucia...talk?"

I felt my face grow hot, & any word I tried to say to explain myself got caught in my throat. I started to panic, but my SO luckily swooped in to say, "Uh, she does, it's just a little hard for her today! Can we take a photo with you?" Cipes awkwardly got close to me for a photo, scribbled hurriedly in the notebook I brought for him to sign, then nodded a goodbye.

After that, I couldn't handle the rest of the con and asked my SO if we could leave early, so we did.

I look back on that moment years later and I feel so many different emotions: embarrassed, confusion, and...a bit betrayed. Those words really cut me deep. "Does Lucia talk?" It made me feel like a freak, like he was already judging me.

He didn't have to say anything. My SO already introduced me. He could have just said, "Hey, Tina, thanks for being a fan! Want a photo?" But he looked me right in the face & asked as if I wasn't there about my ability to talk. He made no effort to hide his appalment, which made the blow hit twice as hard.

As someone that can go mute depending on how stressed/anxious I am, that really hurt me. If I could control my speech during times of stress, I would in a heartbeat. But it doesn't work like that for me. The fact that Cipes was visibly put off by a fan being unable to communicate in the "typical way" made me feel so...small, alone. Like I lost an ally - someone that I thought would understand.

To this day, I can't watch 00s Teen Titans, or TMNT 2012, or hear his voice in any capacity without cringing. My heart sinks even when I see the character Beast Boy because I'm instantly reminded of how alienated I felt when I met a voice actor that I thought was cool, funny, and understanding.

Growing up with 00s Teen Titans, Beast Boy was my favorite character, & I always got so excited when I saw him on screen. That excitement carried over when I heard Cipes' voice in other TV shows that I loved. It felt like I knew him, & I always imagined how cool it would be to meet him in real life. Well, look how that turned out.

I don't want to outright call Cipes an ableist...but his actions toward me felt ableist. It felt like the same stern judgment and disgust that I felt when teachers would chastise me for not sitting still, or forgetting to do my homework for the hundredth time (ADHD). Or when my boss would begrudgingly wish me well after yet another episode caused me to be too weak/physically incapable of coming into work (absent seizures & dysautonomia). It felt like the same apathetic, annoyed, "why are you like this" judgment that I would receive whenever a disability of mine rendered me less than perfect. And the last person I expected to feel that from was Greg Cipes.

I guess this is why they say you should never meet your heroes.

I love his freckles and how round his face is - that's a peak Mikey character design right there! I also think Greg Cipes does an incredible job voicing him! He's a silly little guy and he can be really sweet too - I love how much he wants to be friends with everyone, like how he's the one who tries so hard to make friends with Leatherhead, and how excited he was when he thought Bradford wanted to hang out with him 🥺

The thing I like least about him is just that he's definitely the character who's supposed to be the one that the kids find funny. Which is probably great if you're an 8 year old, but can occasionally be slightly grating as an adult!

About

Kasai was from the Dinak Assembly and was the child of Katekankemara, a Jijima (sacred temple prostitute of the Umanah Worship Religion) who came from a long line of Jijima who served their temple in Uroku for centuries. They were expected to follow this line, until one day Uroku was attacked by the state of Echozi, Kasai’s family and community had been decimated and they had been taken as a slave. They were paired with another Dinak slave, Marashinak, and was forced to breed with Marashinak like a dog. Kasai gave birth to three kids, but they were taken away from them. After changing hands with different slave masters, they were sold to Madame Morga who promptly killed Marashinak and made Kasai her personal bedchamber slave. After years of being with Morga, they found themselves on The Falaina, when Morga’s ship started experiencing trouble. Seeing the abuse Kasai was suffering at the hands of Morga, Russell and Chaat freed them and stranded Morga and her slaves in a deserted island. Morga became The Jade Owls’ most hated enemy that day, but it didn’t matter, Kasai was now a member of The Jade Owls, and they are currently trying to get used to their newfound freedom. Kasai is currently in a relationship with Chaat.

Personality

In his poems, Russell describes Kasai as a “Lonely Flower”. And true to that comparison, Kasai has a tendency of being quiet, shy, and a little bit standoffish, gloomy, and cynical. Due to their isolated life as a slave for many years, they do not know how to interact with people properly, they have deep-seated trust issues, and they are not self-confident. Being a free person is something still new to them and they have a difficult time coming to terms with and expressing this fact. But despite everything, they are pretty kind and gentle, especially towards Chaat and Russell, as they freed them from their enslaver.

Miscellaneous

Kasai speaks with an accent which, to Human ears, sounds like combination of Philippine English and Indonesian (almost like the former Disney Channel Actress, Tania Gunadi).

Kasai had three kids as a teenager and all of them were separated from them and sold as slaves, they don’t even know if they are even alive.

They are a devoted follower of the Umanah Worship Religion. They pray to Umanah every day and every night like clockwork.

Before pursuing a relationship with Chaat, they did have a small crush on Russell, mainly for his androgynous body type and his freckles. For Dinaks, the more spots you have, the more desirable you are.

Like all Dinaks, Kasai can hold their breath underwater for 20 minutes that is because Dinaks have enlarged spleens which act as oxygen stores.

Kasai, since becoming a Jade Owl has become proficient in the use of a naginata thanks to Haerile's training. They chose the naginata because it is a Dinak weapon.

They were initially reluctant to form a relationship with Chaat, due to being a Nargo (a non-Dinak) but eventually came around.

Like Zia, Kasai changes their hairstyle frequently but would never cut their hair as it is a symbol of beauty. Like Opar-Han, Dinaks do not generally cut off their hair.

TMNT TO ME: TMNT 2012 Raw Thrills Arcade Game

This TMNT TO ME is brought to you by @purplekoop, who inspired and encouraged me to make this by asking about what it is, and why I care about it.

The plot is fairly simple. April has been kidnapped by the Foot Clan. (Important note for later: April fights back from being kidnapped, she takes out a few foot soldiers). It's up to the turtles to save her.

We'll go over the rest of the voice cast later, but just know that Seth Green, Sean Astin, Rob Paulsen, and Greg Cipes all reprise their roles. Also, Mikey serves as the announcer. He basically does all the "next level" and "high score" voicelines one expects in an arcade game.

There are three levels to play through: The Sewers, NYC Streets, TCRI. Each level works the same: fight bad guys until a big turtle hand tells you to keep going forward. At the end and halfway point of each level is a boss.

Now let's get onto the gameplay.

Combat

Combat is rather simple. You have an attack button, a jump button, and a joystick for movement.

The big green button is for Turtle Power. It's a super move that clears out all enemies on screen and deals massive damage to bosses. It has to be charged through either beating up enemies or collecting little turtle power power-ups.

There are other items at play too. There's a smoke bomb that stuns every enemy on screen. A cooler that contains Ice Cream Kitty, who bounces from enemy to enemy defeating each one. There's summons. Grabbing this power-up causes either Leatherhead or Metalhead to show up and destroy all enemies on screen. A staple for TMNT games is Pizza serving as health, it's no different here. Finally, there's the shell spin power-up. This basically serves as Superstar from Mario. Your turtle flips on their back and starts spinning, becoming invincible and able to destroy any enemy they come in contact with.

Now, there is one more power-up in the game. But it deserves it's own little section. The last power up is shurikens. They kinda suck. It replaces your regular attack with a ranged attack. This sounds nice. But the reality is that most of your regular attacks cover a wide area around you, which is good because you're often swarmed by enemies. However, the shurikens limit your attack radius to directly in front of you, which often leads you to getting ganged up on. The shurikens are also super difficult to aim with, it's hard to be directly facing an enemy from so far away. The worse part is that once you pick up the shurikens you're stuck with them until you exhaust all ten. You have to use all your shurikens before you can attack normally, there's no dropping or unequipping, you have to hurry and use them all. They're only really good during boss fights as bosses are easier to hit, which is why you usually get some during bossfights. Still, they do appear in regular parts of the level.

There's also plenty of environmental hazards to use against your enemies. Pipes and fire hydrants can be attacked to have their valves fly off and smack enemies. Explosive barrels can be set off around enemies. Trash cans, canisters, and explosive boxes can be thrown at enemies. Enemies can be hit by subway cars and cars. Speaking of enemies.

Enemies

What's a beat-em-up without enemies? We've got MOUSERS (I love MOUSERS). Both a normal grey/white/silver version and a blue version. Both MOUSERS will latch onto the turtles and force you to shake the joystick to shake them off. The blue MOUSERS have a sonar attack of some sort.

There's tons of Foot soldiers. The purple ones can only melee. I don't know what makes the black ones unique as they also only melee. The yellow ones throw shurikens. The red ones throw explosives. The orange ones rush from off screen to stab you. I'll talk about the blue Foot soldiers later.

There's also The Kraang to deal with. Kraangdroids with purple suits can only melee. Kraangdroids with black suits are able to melee or shoot. Naked Kraangdroids and jelly Kraangdroids (Kraangdroids with that blue covering) are able to shoot at you. We will talk about Kraangdroids with blue suits later. There's also Kraang flying around in their little pods. (Note: Nolan North voices all the Kraangdroids of course.)

Lastly, there are Squirrelanoids. Yes, Squirrelanoids. They try to hit you and throw up on you. Pretty nasty stuff.

Now, let's talk about the blue. I hate the blue Foot soldiers and blue suit Kraangdroids. Both of these enemies wield a large laser gun. It's fucking undodgeable. No matter what you do, you will be hit by the beam and take a ton of damage. It's such bullshit.

Now, that we're done with the low lives, let's tackle the big bads.

Bosses

A little forewarning. I'm pretty sure the intended way to fight the bosses is by beating up the constantly summoned enemies in order to generate turtle power, then unleashing that turtle power on the boss. Directly attacking the boss is discouraged as they often quickly swat you away. However, I usually just ignored the smaller enemies and attacked the bosses head on, which is probably why I died so much. Still, I did find out that you can bait out the swat by hitting the boss twice and running away.

The first boss of "The Sewers" is Chrome Dome. He just has the stereotypical evil robot voice with stereotypical evil robot voicelines. Also he uses the Elite Foot-Bot model instead of the actual Chrome Dome model from the show. But in all fairness, the models are pretty similar. His attacks include: A laser eye beam that functions identically to the bullshit large laser guns, a plasma whip attack that you can’t dodge, a jump slam that you can easily jump over, flying into you, and hitting you with a plasma sword.

The final boss of “The Sewers” is Baxter Stockman. You fight him in Splinter’s dojo of all places. Phil LaMarr reprises his role. Baxter Stockman has what appears to be a modified Kraang blaster. His attacks include: a little flying spin, throwing up right in front of him, throwing up in a long straight line, and shooting at you.

The first boss of "NYC Streets" is Bebop. J.B. Smoove didn't come back to reprise his role. Bebop is instead voiced by Arif Kitchen. The replacement isn't bad, but it is noticeable. Bebop's attacks include: hip blasts, a hip blast cluster where five blasts come out at the same time, and his iconic mohawk attack. Bebop can still turn invisible, and in fact even uses this to become temporarily unattackable.

The final boss of "NYC Streets" is Rocksteady. Fred Tatasciore reprises his role. Rocksteady's attacks include: rhino charge that you can't dodge, flamethrower attack that is completely random to dodge, and a jump slam.

The first boss of "TCRI" is Krang (1987). Pat Fraley reprises his role. Krang's attacks include: a jump slam, missiles that rain down, and a bullshit eye laser attack.

The final boss of "TCRI" is Kraang Subprime. Gilbert Gottfried reprises his role. Kraang Subprime attacks include: a spin attack, firing a missile, a jump slam, and a bullshit eye laser attack.

Ending

The final level "Shredder's Lair" is unlocked after beating the three previous levels. It's a gauntlet contained to one room. You have to fight off waves of Foot-Bots and MOUSERS. You also have rematches against Bebop, Rocksteady, Chrome Dome, and Baxter Stockman.

Once you re-defeat the previous bosses, Shredder steps down from his throne (which he was previously insulting and taunting you from). Kevin Michael Richardson reprises his role. Shredder attacks include: a kick that summons a blast of white energy that flies at you, a smokebomb teleport, a jump slam, and a charge that launches you across the room, along with a few slashes of course.

Once you beat Shredder, you get the absolute prize that is the ending cutscene. The turtles free April from Shredder's dungeon. (Note: April does not have any lines, so Mae Whitman did not reprise her role.) April then proceeds to... I think the pictures speak for themselves.

The gang celebrates with pizza. All is well.

And now I have a confession to make about a previous statement in my post about my journey to play the game.

I didn't actually beat Shredder.

My playthrough was a solo run as Donatello at first. However, since this is a public arcade, eventually other people joined me. I spent the first three levels playing by myself. However, soon after I started "Shredder's Lair", a little boy joined as Leonardo. Shortly after the little boy joined, a little girl joined as Raphael. Their help was greatly appreciated, for they helped me deal with the swarms of enemies faster and deal more damage to the bosses. However, the little boy got the last hit on Shredder. Meaning that I technically only helped beat Shredder. I guess the canon ending of Leo defeating Shredder always triumphs. Although, technically the cutscenes imply that April defeated Shredder, so who's to say what really happened.
