Miyazaki's Retirement Declarations (chronologically)

Translated from last week's NHK documentary on the production of The Boy and The Heron (more under cut). I saw people posting a screencap of this and I just couldn't contain myself. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON WAY LONGER THAN I IMAGINED LMFAO

This is from the NHK programme "Professional - Their Working Philosophy" (プロフェッショナル 仕事の流儀) a few days ago (16/12/2023). The episode investigates the production process of The Boy and the Huron, and how the late Takahata Isao influenced the movie.

(It was confirmed within the documentary that Mahito = Miyazaki, Great Uncle = Takahata Isao, The Heron = Suzuki Toshio, Kiriko = Yasuda Michiyo)

The documentary is currently available on the NHK Streaming Service (Location Limited). If you have your own ways of watching and you know Japanese, I would definitely recommend the episode as it gives a lot of much-needed context to The Boy and The Heron. Personally, I haven't found a way to watch it yet, so all I know about the documentary are hearsay I saw on Japanese twitter.

Also, at the very end of the episode, Miyazaki was shown working on a Naucicaa piece without any explanation, which led to many people speculating whether he could be working on a sequel for Naucicaa of the Valley of the Wind.

What do yall think? Do you think he's going to finally retire or release yet another animated film in a few years? I would love to see Naucicaa 2 but I also feel like he really needs to... yknow, chillax a bit and stuff. He deserves a long ass vacation.

Smiling Scugs

Me and my friend, Miles, played a Rainworld co-op campaign [vaguely] based off Smiling Friends. I played as Charlie, and Miles as Pim. These are a few of the doodles I drew for it just for the sake of it.

We found three pups (two represented as homonculi in the last image), which were named Jason, Smormu, and Zongo. I was the one usually carrying them because I have no lag on my own computer, but realistically, Charlie would probably want nothing to do with them, let’s be honest.

Charlie was made into Gourm purely because he strikes me as the physically stronger character. He also gets winded in a few scenes in the show, so that I thought was also fitting. I did not make him that because he was fat, I will be angry if I’m accused otherwise. Pim, however, I felt fit rivulet purely because of how hyper and fast-moving he is. The giant googly eyes probably didn’t help… Some people like to headcanon him as an amphibian, so I suppose it fits with that stuff too.

This was a dramatic recreation of something that actually happened when me and my friend played. I wanted to imagine it like the characters, they’re in this world with rules they have yet to learn, forms they’re not used to, all that jazz. This took like three hours, I have no clue how.

Ignore the black squares… I couldn’t figure out how to fill the space. The reason most of the text is digital because everyone tells me my handwriting is hard to read.

Okay so like. This isn't aimed at anyone in particular, but it is a sentiment that I see in the fandom for Kokichi and it especially annoys me.

It's the sentiment that Kokichi doesn't ever want to die.

You can argue that for chapters 1-3--I personally HC that he struggles a lot with self worth and mental health, but you can argue that even if he was maybe willing to offer himself up as sacrifice before, that he didn't necessarily want to die. Fine, I get that.

But then you get to Chapter 4.

Chapter 4, where Kokichi sees the Secret of the Outside World all on his own. He sees the world's destruction, something that makes literally everyone else in the school suicidal--and yet you're going to tell me he didn't want to die?

He didn't have anyone to comfort him. He didn't have anyone he could trust. And you're telling me he just, dealt with that devastation all on his own in the most. Frankly unrealistic way in fiction? That he didn't feel devastation upon knowing everything he loved and hated and didn't care about was gone?

You're going to tell me that this boy is the only one who didn't want to die when he saw the secret of the outside world?

Mercy Kill Theory be damned, why the fuck do people assume he isn't as deeply affected by the literal end of the world? Why do people keep thinking that Kokichi can just, walk it off--especially when it, in my opinion, perfectly and logically explains his actions in chapter 4. Why his behavioral shift is so drastic and why he's out of control. Even disregarding the Mass Mercy Kill Theory.

The problem here isn't just my own interpretation and what not--its that once again, Kokichi is being singled out as an outlier. He's being interpreted as the odd one out, the one who Doesn't Feel the Same Feelings as Everyone Else.

He's just a fucking kid. A smart, mischievous kid with issues, sure--but he's just like the rest of his classmates. He's no more special or deviant than they are.

So once again, I ask: Why the fuck is it that only Kokichi is considered in this way? Why is he the odd one out? Why is he not treated by this fandom like the other characters are?

I need people to think about this for a hot minute.
