Smiling Scugs

Me and my friend, Miles, played a Rainworld co-op campaign [vaguely] based off Smiling Friends. I played as Charlie, and Miles as Pim. These are a few of the doodles I drew for it just for the sake of it.

We found three pups (two represented as homonculi in the last image), which were named Jason, Smormu, and Zongo. I was the one usually carrying them because I have no lag on my own computer, but realistically, Charlie would probably want nothing to do with them, let’s be honest.

Charlie was made into Gourm purely because he strikes me as the physically stronger character. He also gets winded in a few scenes in the show, so that I thought was also fitting. I did not make him that because he was fat, I will be angry if I’m accused otherwise. Pim, however, I felt fit rivulet purely because of how hyper and fast-moving he is. The giant googly eyes probably didn’t help… Some people like to headcanon him as an amphibian, so I suppose it fits with that stuff too.

This was a dramatic recreation of something that actually happened when me and my friend played. I wanted to imagine it like the characters, they’re in this world with rules they have yet to learn, forms they’re not used to, all that jazz. This took like three hours, I have no clue how.

Ignore the black squares… I couldn’t figure out how to fill the space. The reason most of the text is digital because everyone tells me my handwriting is hard to read.

ive never had a comfort character like Ever and i still wouldnt call this that, but theres Something about gourmand. like ok scugs already are so fun for me to draw. but whenever im drawing gourmand theyve got me lying on my feet and kicking my legs and smiling nd shit. like ok look at this wip from like a few weeks ago

theres just. So much to love. theyre round... they enjoy the simple life... theyre an alchemist... an artist... a leader... theyre good with children... theyre made of 100 pounds of muscle they gained to protect their colony as leader... they find meaning in the endless and uncaring cycle of death and rebirth... As Monk crawled into a shelter, rain shook the ground outside. Unexpectedly, someone followed behind. Monk turned around and jolted seeing the creature behind them.

Enot's smile grew, it's flat red teeth shining against the dim light. "Hello, short one!"

Monk's ears pinned, "H-hello!" He returned the greeting. Monk shuffled into the corner a bit more, "Do you need to stay in this shelter? it's raining outside now, I don't think you'll make it to a different shelter." Monk patted the insulated ground of the room. "I don't mind company, I'd never want anyone to die to the rain, not without as much help as I can offer."

Enot chuckled softly, "You sure follow your namesake." It slithered into the box, soft moss and lichens padded the cold metal ground. Though that didn't matter to Enot. "Do you share shelters a lot?"

Monk was quiet for a moment, "... You must've heard about me from the scavengers, they love to chat." The yellow slugcat laid down on the ground, his short fur and body heat warning the ground. "Mhm back home I usually sleep in piles with the others, but now I'm here and more often scavengers and lizards will hibernate with me. I have yet to see another slugcat though!"

"You must miss colony life, you're a sociable little creature." Enot scooted closer to Monk and lays down, its long tail curled around both of them. "Colonies aren't around inside the walls anymore, the rain is too severe and the shelters are too small."

"The walls?" Monk echoed. He noticed Enot's long and disjointed tail curling around him, but he didn't mind. "Is that where I am?"

Enot nodded its head, its long ears smoothing out to avoid hitting the top of the cramped shelter. "Inside the walls, a place where the rain takes over, as you know. Your life on the outside, in the wilds, is more tame than the destruction here."

Monk chuckled, "I mean, not dealing with jungle leeches is nice-"

"Is feeling yourself slowly becoming paralyzed from a spider better? Is dealing the rot better? Is swimming in polluted waters better? is getting swept off the ground by vultures better? Is lizards fighting over your limp body better? Is being drowned by worms better?" Enot leaned closer and its smile wrapped around its long snout. "You haven't even experienced half of the terrors here. No matter how nice you are, how much kindness you treat a creature with, you'll always be reduced to a karma flower for your empathy."

Monk stood up and stepped away from Enot. "You can't know that."

Enot hummed, "hmm, well I do." Enot sat up on its haunches and leaned over the yellow furred slugcat. "You need to go home. You won't find your sister here. She's already gone."

Monk's heart raced, what does this slugcat mean by that? "She's not gone, she'll never be gone for as long as I'm searching for her." The whole reason Monk came here was for Survivor, he couldn't give up. "And how could you know?!"

"Everyone really needs to stop asking that question again and again." Enot rolled its strange blue eyes. "I made sure your sister had her ending. You need yours. You'll see her again, you just need a way to go home." Enot taps his claws, "Except you can't actually leave."

"You're not making any sense! Is Survivor already home? Is she still here?" Monk starts to lose his composure.

Enot frowns, "ugh, timelines, how do I make this sort of linear?" Enot starts to mumble to itself while Monk sees if he can make a run for the exit. "Gourm opened the door after Surv- but Surv isn't home so Monk can't see her..."

Monk leapt around Enot and dashed for the pipe, but the messed up slugcat grabs Monk by the tail and drags him back down. "Get off of me!" Monk yelps.

"Wait wait wait! Darn... OKAY." Enot gently tosses Monk back into the corner and blocks the exit. "Out of every scug I figured you'd be the easiest to convince towards their 'bad' ending." Enot groans and yanks on their ears in frustration. "Ummm, sure go home. It's a long journey, and your sister won't be the same. But screw the timeline, my existence itself is breaking this world!"

Monk looks on twitch fear, "...what?"

"You beat my games, I'll have to think this through better next time!" Enot begins to cough something up, an egg with a weird red marking. "Sorry about this, but it is .. your payment for your ending or whatever. Find the iterators yada yada and you'll be fine-" Enot reaches out and taps Monk on the nose, "-boop!" Enot drops the egg and everything starts to warp.

Monk gasps as he wakes up where he started last cycle. "... I think I need to go home asap."

Animation VS Rain - AVR "Twenty Dim Lights" Structure half intact, Dim lives a quiet life on the edge of the ocean. Their structure over many cycles had started to decay with the rough storms. The storms themselves shook the earth enough to almost take out some of their legs. Luckly by some miracle - perhaps even a blessing from what gods many remain, he was spared the misfortune of falling to ruin. Not at all near any real ecosystems but the sea, Dim lives without the hassle of being invaded or infested by pesty animals. Although a quiet structure, Dim makes a lot of noise by themselves. Playing the old music kept from their past interactions with their creators. Dim does sometimes get visitors, but to say they are pleased by the sudden new faces would be a lie. Faking a smile and understanding nod, Dim shoos them off before they can even think about settling down in his body.

"Tinted Choices Occurring" Structure entirely intact, Tint lives in a loud and chaotic environment. Slammed between a jungle and grand ocean, their body is constantly pecked at by Vultures and Scavs. To deal with such pests, Tint deploys the help of two unlikely helpers - Slug Cats, or as Tint has named them: Royal and Purr. Although small, these little hunters are enough to keep the animals away from the vital parts of his body. Tint doesn't care for the life around his structure, he only cares that it leaves. The Slug Cats they can tolerate and even live along side with, but the Vultures? He wishes they'd just fall out of the sky. The endless song of their calls haunts the walls of their structure. The sooner those two hunt them all off, the better.

"Tiny Spinning Colors" The newest model of iterator, made just before the creators left to their great ascensions deep below the earth. Having no loose wires, the child iterator flies carelessly, not needing to worry about the harm done by their play. This iterator was made with the purpose other iterators share, but it seems something went wrong with them. What should be their mind finding a solution, is instead finding only joy in existing. "Why find a cure when the cure is right here already?" Spinning spends their day chatting with other iterators, acting as their shining light. Either leading them to new things to work on or distract themselves from the pains they share. Being heavy on the emotional support, they themselves have their own support systems as well. Living in the walls of their body is a family of Slug Cats, ones that care for Spinning as he does care for them. Providing a garden of food and protection from danger, the Slug Cats all visit him daily, bringing gifts of rocks and pearls, sometimes even bringing Spinning some fruit! How kind.

Day 10 - Personality

Oh so for this day we’re describing our OC’s personalities? Well this will be fun

Bombyx is a sarcastic and cynical scug. They wouldn’t hesitate to add snarky remarks and funny quips when talking to someone they aren’t close to, they also can and WILL speak their mind

However, they are VERY protective over people they trust, if someone even mildly insults one of their friends they WILL remember it, you could say that they value their loved ones over themself

They also believe in retribution a lot, in their mind there’s no point in sparing the life of a person who’s beyond redemption like they’re the kind of person that would be told “if you kill a killer the number of killers stay the same” and they’d say “ok then kill TWO killers idiot”

Oh, and they don’t want you to know this, but they’re an emotional mess that will usually cover it up with anger AND they hide their emotions from literally everyone expet Kerro, a platonic tsundere if you will

Can you tell that I think about this character a lot?

oh but that’s not all, because I have an old drawing of this emotion chart bc I definitely imagine them having distinct facial expressions compared to others, specially with the D E V I O U S expression, cause that’s a big one lol. I imagine them not knowing how to properly smile and will make the most gremlin expression ever

also gotta say it’s heartwarming seeing you guys say yes to sait and Arti. some of you are just saying “hell yeah that’d be entertaining” and that’s funny but some of you are talking directly to them and it reads as very sweet to me. makes me smile :3
