I have two Roman Empires. They surround Reuben and Gantu. (Third one is in the reblogs!)

My Roman Empire is how Reuben literally stopped being rude to everybody when Lilo gave him a name. A NAME. From the 65 episodes, all those insults he spewed out… that snarky attitude he gave everybody… all the hurt feelings he caused ended at this moment. You never see him being mean to Lilo, Gantu or Stitch ever again. He literally considers something as simple as being given a name affection.

He went the entire show without a name, just being called 625. Meanwhile, if not all, most of the other experiments had a name. Pretty sure it made Reuben feel that he was irrelevant, forgotten and most of all: failed. Perhaps that's ONE of the reasons he STAYED so rude throughout the show and like for half the Leroy and Stitch movie; the time he was simply a number?

My second Roman Empire is about how Gantu… this intimidating, strict, ruthless guy

...did not like being evil. He was seeking emotional validation.

"Am I good enough?" I can only imagine him asking himself that after hearing Hamsterviel, Reuben or his father's negative voice in his head. I don’t care if Reuben was “struggling too”, he still didn’t have to project so much.

When Gantu got vulnerable with Reuben in episode 28, he talked about how his father was very authoritarian and strict. He also talked about how his peers looked down on him. Can't imagine how bad he wanted to prove his daddy and peers wrong. He truly did try. It's awful because he even talks about how his life would have been better if he would have stuck with his girlfriend. Deep down, being the captain isn't what he wanted. He wanted to live a normal childhood. Sacrificed it, though, all for his dad.

His first attempt at being what his father pushed him to be was under the Grand Councilwoman. However, after the chaos he and stitch had, she fired him. This is why he had such a hate for stitch throughout the entire show. Not because of selfishness, not because he was evil, but because stitch ruined the pathway that gave him that sense of superiority and validation.

Throughout the show, no thanks to plot armor and gags and jokes, he is constantly failing to capture experiments AND is being ridiculed. It's by everybody- Lilo, Stitch, Reuben, random people. Sometimes it's physical, sometimes it's verbal. It definitely has an effect. Might as well be physical and verbal abuse because of how often and harsh it is.

It’s not normal to call yourself a failure because you don’t know where a street is.

There’s this episode where he prefers to be a guy named “Uncle Chester”. While he’s Chester, he doesn’t have to worry about Hamsterviel’s ruthlessness and doesn’t have to be bullied every single episode. He was delusional as Chester but at least he was happy. He pointed out how he was unhappier as Gantu.

But

There is nobody that affects him as much as Hamsterviel does.

I've ALWAYS been asking myself, "why doesn't he just squish Hamsterviel? Hamsterviel is all bark no bite!" Hamsterviel is the most demanding, controlling, manipulating, obnoxious, and most of all- DEGRADING boss that Gantu has had. However…

Could it be that he resorts to Hamsterviel and never hurts him because it's another chance to prove himself to a figure like his father?

He sees toxicity as another chance to prove himself. Doesn’t matter all the suffering he does.

As long as the job gets done, right?

But I mean, hey.

Gantu is hot.

El Corazón de Hawái: La isla que inspiro Lilo y Stich

Lilo, una pequeña niña hawaiana que se siente sola, decide adoptar un "perro" (muy feo) al que llamara Stich, que podría ser la compañía perfecta si no fuera en realidad el fruto de un experimento genético que se ha escapado de un planeta alienígena y que ha aterrizado en la tierra por accidente.

Recordamos con cariño a este extraterrestre azul y su pequeña amiga nativa de Hawái. La historia de esta amistad comenzó en un pequeño y perdido pueblo llamado Hanapepe, ubicado en la isla Kaua’i, aunque originalmente la pelicula iba a estar inspirada en la ciudad de Kansas, y nuestro querido Stich iba a ser un alíen que buscaba su origen en un bosque, afortunadamente los creadores decidieron cambiar esto y nos dieron la historia que hoy conocemos.  

Aunque la ciudad sirvió de inspiración, la cinta se ubica realmente en la ciudad ficticia de Kokaua Town, pero Hanapepe no repudia su conexión con el film de Disney y se puede ver esta conexión en algunos puntos de la ciudad, el más bonito para los turistas es el mural dedicado a Stich y las hermanas.

El pequeño pueblo fue elegido por los creadores porque reflejaba el espíritu tranquilo y pintoresco que querían para la historia de Lilo y su hermana Nani. Además, los paisajes y la estética de la isla fueron una gran inspiración para el estilo visual del film para el cual se copió el tipo de vegetación, vivienda e incluso los mercados y autos. La vida en un pueblito como este es muy tranquila, como puede verse reflejado en el largometraje, y quienes han tenido la oportunidad de visitarlo han comentado que parece un pueblo que quedo estancado en el tiempo, con una población de pocos habitantes. Para lograr demostrar esto en la pelicula, los creadores decidieron utilizar una técnica de animación que Disney no habia utilizado en más de 60 años: la acuarela. Dean DeBlois uno de los cocreadores del film, menciono en una entrevista que diseñaron la ciudad de tal forma que Lilo pudiera llegar a todas partes, y que la manera de animarla (técnica, colores, la atmosfera que crearon) tenía como objetivo retratar el sentido del verano interminable de Lilo y la percepción infantil de su mundo.

Para lograr el efecto que buscaban debieron hacer una investigación muy exhaustiva del lugar estudiando la geografía, los edificios, la vegetación e incluso la forma en que la luz cae del cielo a diferentes horas del día, como mencionan ambos creadores en Lilo & Stich - Historias recopiladas de los creadores de la película. Pintaron y fotografiaron casas, negocios, montañas, puentes y costas marinas, e incorporaron muchas ubicaciones reales en la película como por ejemplo el famoso valle Kalalau de Kauai el cual aparece al principio de la película, y es donde Stich cae cerca de lo que se parece mucho a la costa de, ubicado del otro lado de la isla.

A lo largo de Lilo y Stich podemos apreciar la gran cantidad de detalles que los creadores y animadores tomaron de la ciudad. Las montañas de la costa norte de Kauai se aprecian a lo largo de todo el audiovisual, y uno de los paisajes más hermosos son las calas aisladas, playas de poca gente que son difíciles de acceder, y las cuales podemos apreciar durante la escena de persecución cuando el equipo de Stich persigue la nave donde Gantu tiene secuestrada a Lilo (sé que todos sufrimos cuando la nave de Stich golpea el helado del pobre turista).

Hacia el noroeste alrededor de la isla se puede apreciar el faro de Kilauea, un mirador que, si recordamos bien, podemos reconocer de la escena del triciclo cuando Lilo y Stich pasean por varios lugares de la ciudad, y donde Lilo dice la famosa frase “es lindo vivir en una isla y no en grandes ciudades”.

La ciudad de Hanapepe es hoy un rincón en el mundo donde la ficción y la realidad se juntan y crean algo maravilloso. Aunque el pueblo siguió su curso, y con el pasar de los años cambio en algunos aspectos, su version animada sigue viva en quienes crecimos con la pelicula y quienes aun de adultos la vemos y disfrutamos. Y me entusiasma saber que una nueva generación de espectadores quedará maravillada con esos mismos paisajes cuando finalmente el live action de esta hermosa historia llegue a cines.
