Did you go to art uni? What were the most important things you learned?

i did yes :) i think the most important thing i learned is to experiment and to put at least a little bit of meaning behind every element of your art piece — that’s why i got so into animal motifs and flower language, i think they’re such a lovely way to present stuff! but honestly my course was very lenient, it was mostly about you doing you and tutors giving you advice where necessary!

Ah, thank you, anon, it's okay. It's been a while now (court moves slooow), but we're getting hopefully close to the end. She filed in Family Court December 2022, and we've had about five interim hearings with final trial (finally) scheduled over four days next month, so fingers crossed! But yeah, it's been A Time. He's financially and emotionally abusive against my sister, and both those things as well as medically negligent against their children (who are only six and eight and both have special needs), so it's been....rough. To say the least.

But on a lighter note, have one of my new favourite photos I took of my nephews at the jellyfish enclosure at the aquarium last month!

I do think Lance was once a big fish in a small pond. I think he was the kid from a small town who got the best scores on the simulator when the Garrison came to recruit him. I think he did probably kind of let it get to his head- maybe because he felt like he didn't really have a special talent before, and now he had something that made him stand out. That he was the best pilot in his town!

And then he actually joined the Garrison, and he realized he'd been in a tiny pond all along.

I think here's where he made a mistake- he'd gunned himself up so much on having 'natural talent', that when he was tossed into the larger pond and realized it was full of even bigger fish than him, he still tried to float by on his talent. I think he practiced! But I also think he only did the bare minimum and was like 'yep! that's good enough!'. I don't think he ever likely fully realized that all of the other bigger fish who he thought were so good due to natural talent practiced at least ten times more than he did.

Lance was a cargo pilot at first. We know this. He only got accepted into the fighter pilot program when Keith washed out- which implies that he was probably the best cargo pilot candidate. The top of the list... and then he was the bottom of the list of the fighter pilot class. I think he probably floundered at the more rigorous training the fighter pilots received, but still tried to stick to his 'good enough' training regime.

He had potential- he just wasn't doing anything with it. He was doing what was 'good enough'. It wasn't his fault everyone else had so much more natural talent than he did. He didn't spend enough time in the simulator to see just how much more time everyone else in his class logged.

Confession: I haven't written in a few weeks. Lots of reasons, but I finally decided I want to start again. To get myself back into the grove, I thought it would be a good idea to read through my story from the very beginning. I haven't looked at my first few chapters in nearly a year. At this point, I know I've improved. I thought I'd eventually completely overhaul the first few dozen pages, as they were probably beginner's garbage.

I was bracing myself for the cringe, but was pleasantly surprised to find that those chapters are not hot garbage. I can definitely see where I have improved over time, but my passion was always there. There's definitely a lot of little things I want to edit and add to, but the characterization is good, there's some memorable dialogue, the pacing is descent... For the most part, I really enjoyed my story, even the beginning.

I've heard people say that when you're learning to write, you're first million words will be worthless. While they may be unpublishable until you've gained a few years of experience, your first story won't be worthless. And even if it is bad, you can edit it later. I feel like most of us disparage our own creative origin story so much, we might intimidate beginners from ever starting. So if you're thinking of writing something and no one else will tell you, I will. Even when you're starting out and learning and making mistakes, your creativity still has value. If you have a story in your head that you care about, start writing it down. You can figure it out along the way. An imperfect story is better than one that doesn't exist.
