having prongsfoot thoughts but specifically how james skews his moral compass wrong for sirius and sirius tries to fix his for james. thinking about how sirius is the 'cruel' one and james is the 'kind' one but sirius tells the marauders about his mother and remus and peter see pure hatred in james' eyes when sirius is bids farewell to them on the train, months later. thinking about how lily makes a remark about sirius' family and james snaps at her, which he's never done before. thinking about sirius sitting idly and chainsmoking as he tells james that regulus is dead and james comforts him while he thinks good riddance. thinking about sirius trying to make conversation with peter because james likes him, so sirius has to too. thinking about sirius slipping chocolate and a sorry note to remus because james said sirius made an insensitive joke. thinking about sirius trying to be nicer and accepting and holding his tongue near certain people because james doesn't like it when he's mean to them. thinking about sirius never not being proud because james never tells him not to be, but only because james had grown to adore it. thinking them both knowing each other's flaws and feeling their depressions and thinking the other is the pinnacle of perfection despite it, that unless he says it's wrong, i'm right.

because even though james loves remus- and he absolutely does! he would kill and die for him! -he did NOT anticipate how jealous he would be of anyone else taking sirius’ attention. or how much disdain he would inherently carry, try as he might, for anyone who didn’t understand sirius on that same molecular level. and remus doesn’t- sirius and remus love each other, are attracted to each other, match in a hundred ways. but they aren’t made from the same cloth the way james and sirius are. he’s protective of sirius- he’s been through a lot, and the mere prospect of someone being in a position where they could hurt him more is maddening. it feels like losing control- and james needs to keep his people safe. it was different with all the girls- sirius was playing them. he was never gone the way he’s gone with remus. he was still james’.

remus has no clue that any of this is happening until james asks sirius who he would save in a fire in a tone just too desperate to be joking.

peter, on the other hand, knows everything, as Lily’s been tutoring him in potions and hearing James’ jealous rants for weeks.

“I’ll miss you, Pads.” James tells him solemnly.

“Yeah, I’ll miss you, too.” Sirius looks up from where he was staring at the ground.

“They do know we’re just driving in separate cars, right?” Regulus asks Remus as they’re leaning against one of the cars.

“I’ve seen them do this when one of them has to go to the bathroom.” Remus tells him dryly and Regulus rolls his eyes pushing himself off the car.

“Alright, idiots, let’s go or we’re going to be late.” Regulus yells and gets in the passenger seat of James’ car.

A moment later James gets in the driver’s side and Regulus just stares at him.

“What?” James asks.

“Should I be worried?” Regulus jokingly asks and James rolls his eyes.

“That? That’s all for show. You–” James leans over and kisses Regulus. “–have my whole heart.” James tells him.

“I’m going to tell him you said that.” Regulus says as he turns to grab his seatbelt. When he turns back, James is staring at him with actual fear in his eyes.

Regulus rolls his eyes and shakes his head as he leans in to kiss James. James starts the car and they follow Sirius and Remus, but James sends Regulus nervous glances the entire drive.
