Rewatching this series has allowed me to notice the quite frankly hilarious exchange between Kunikida & Jun’ichirou during Atsushi’s entrance exam.

Jun’ichirou is trying to act tough with threatening Kunikida until he—out of nowhere, says this shit:

And Kunikida, understandably, is like excuse me??

Now, you can see the exact moment Jun’ichirou realizes he fucked up. Idk how much improv experience Tanizaki has, but I doubt he intended to make his demand that kinky, and it shows.

But it’s too late to change his bad boy act now, so he doubles down.

At this point, you can tell Kunikida takes a moment to lower his blood pressure, before he just resigns with a “this may as well happen” sort of face.

Like IMAGINE. You tell your colleague to pretend to be a psycho bomber and he asks you to do THIS shit??? Like Tanizaki do you have something you wanna share with the class?

You gotta hand it to Kunikida for keeping a straight face the whole time though, goddamn. He may be a tightass, but he committed to that role.

I love how his childishness came out in a more serious way in this chapter, never getting over his expressions in these panels.

i like when people give atsushi cat-like traits like purring or having sharper-than-average canines and i think we should take it a step further and just keep adding onto it. atsushi should chuff. he scratches on walls and his desk until there's obvious nail marks digging into the wood. he rubs against the others to mark them as his territory. there has to be a meeting held because he won't stop shedding and there's white hair everywhere so a good portion of the agency's budget goes into getting everyone lint rollers. he freaks people out at night because of his tapetum lucidum. and he does all of this subconsciously so if you tell him he does any of these things he'd be absolutely mortified

dazai makes atsushi take random photos and videos of him throughout the day (most of them are super dramatic and/or aesthetic) only to caption them with the most unhinged stuff when he posts them on social media

Kunikida genuinely snapping at Dazai makes for an interesting scenario...

It isn't a 'haha Kunikida is strangling Dazai for not pulling his weight' moment, but one filled with yells, flailing hands, rage and spilled tears because he's overworked and stressed and Dazai isn't helping and he's just so, so tired.

It could be due to him having no proper sleep all week. It could be due to a failed mission and only him getting reprimanded by Fukuzawa. It could be due to Dazai pushing his buttons too far. It could be the frustration piling up to the brim and finally spilling out.

But all the same, Dazai thinks that it's their typical ritual of Kunikida getting angry at him at first, so he pushes further, until the yells get hearty, the words get harsh, the tears spill, and Dazai just stares, stupified. He isn't sure what to say or do, blanking because things are currently out of his depth. Can't even say a word when Kunikida storms and leaves...

Later, when things settle after Kunikida receives the space he needs, Dazai would try to go and apologize, to own up to his mistakes in the ways he knows how, which isn't to say are right or great ways, but close enough...

Of course, Kunikida doesn't expect Dazai to magically switch from slacker to hard worker just because of this single instance, but he conveys his appreciation for Dazai's apologies anyway, saying sorry himself for the unwarranted yelling and harsh words. They make it work.

And they spring right back the day after...

Fed up with his rudeness , Atsushi talks back to Akutagawa, hitting THAT sensitive topic for him

Atsushi just now realises he hit a sensitive nerve and he's clearly expecting a violent reaction from Akutagawa

Akutagawa doesn't lash out at Atsushi and proceeds to keep walking

Atsushi is surprised by the lack of reaction towards him and proceeds to reach for Akutagawa

Akutagawa really doesn't like to be touched, especially after being insulted

You know what really caught me off guard? Fyodor's reaction to Atsushi's pleas.

It felt like he just went fully mask off at these two moments and when Akutagawa appeared, he returned to his usual persona.
