Was discussing queerbaiting recently with a friend because we’re watching Once Upon A Time (trash, but shockingly well written trash in the first 3 seasons) and obs we both ship swan queen. I mean. Come on.

But we noticed that from the start of s3 onwards, there was noticeably less shippy stuff between these two. There’s still a bit here and there because a) lesbian mums and b) chemistryyyy… but it felt like the writers were intentionally backing off from that pairing and putting genuine effort into the male love interests for both characters.

You might think that becalming the swan queen ship would have annoyed or disappointed my friend and myself, the shippers. But tbh we both agreed that it was actually nice to see a writing team see a popular queer fandom ship, go ‘oh whoops that’s not endgame’, and actively NOT bait it.

Obviously everyone here is aware of the Golden Age Of Queerbaiting, the late 2000s/early 2010s; even if you’re too young to have actually battled through it, it’s deep tumblr lore. We all know the repeat and egregious offenders from that time - destiel, merthur, johnlock, whatever the main one was on teen wolf - and how gleefully these shows would dangle queer rep in front of our twitching little noses.

Recently, I’ve noticed a more insidious trend: the Male Friendship Scarcity Myth. The most glaring recent examples are nandermo (WWDITS) and jayvik (arcane), both of which were popular ships after the first season(s) of their shows aired and were subsequently given increased screen time and shippy scenes/storylines. In the case of nandermo, the romantic feelings (at least from Guillermo) were textual. Both pairings were given ambiguous endings where they were together, but not confirmed as, yknow, together.

And then both showrunners, after the shows ended, decided to step up to the mic and give a heartfelt little speech along the lines of ‘men are allowed to be friends without it being sexual, and it’s actually really important that we show this, because we need more representation of close platonic brotherly male friendship in media’.

Anyone who was around during the aforementioned Golden Age Of Queerbaiting, or in fact anyone who consumes popular media at all, knows that this is horseshit.

It’s only ever close platonic brotherly male friendship. Or at least, 95% of the time. Everywhere you look, from major fandom shows to mcu movies, platonic male relationships are often front and centre. That’s nearly always the canon. How often does a major mlm ship actually go canon??? Hardly ever. Even destiel didn’t; cas’s feelings were confirmed last minute, but the official canon dynamic between him and dean is still brotherly bffs.

Are these friendships often the subject of intense fandom shipping? Yes, as literally any close relationship between any two characters of any gender always will be. People like shipping! But the official canon, and the gospel truth held up by poorly disguised homophobes in fandom, is nearly always strictly platonic bros.

Anyway. All this to say, I’ve been disillusioned recently seeing this myth pop up in every comments section on any jayvik-related content, that we have a lack of male friendship in media (we don’t, we have a lack of male friendship that isn’t queer coded to super turbo gay hell and back in media). I was even more disillusioned seeing the exact same rhetoric being spewed by those involved with WWDITS, which is ironically a show jam packed full of close male friendships THAT INVOLVE CASUAL SEX. The call was truly coming from inside the coffin on that one.

So, unexpectedly and somewhat depressingly, swan queen and OUAT have been a balm for the soul in the midst of all this. No queerbaiting (at least not where I’m up to), just good old fashioned straightwashing. At least it’s honest 🤷‍♀️

Vivziepop Stans, There Is No Double Standards People Gave Family Guy Lots Of Flack At The Peak Of It's Tasteless Edgy Humor Era (Especially It's Sexual Assault Jokes)

Vivziepop stans say that Family Guy and it's creators don't get much flak with their edgy humor and in comparison to them, but I say that's bs. Because it's like they forgot that a big part of the late 2000's and early 2010's was the fact everyone was turned off by the edgy for edgy sake humor this era was doing. I mean Family Guy still is rancid and people are still turned off by it at times, but these morons really forget how vitriol the criticism was. They just are selectively oblivious so that their narrative of this series and Vivziepop being unfairly dunked on goes untouched.

Seriously, the sexual assault jokes that FG did during that era was the biggest criticism especially when it came to Glen Quagmire. And let's just say despite how they long ditch that part of his character it still clouds him due to the lengths they did to run that nasty part of his characterization. While Family Guy was always known for its edgy humor, they had become edgy for the sake of being edgy. The assault jokes being the product of that. There was absolutely no point than to just snicker they made a joke like that and people got weary of it. That's the same issue Helluva Boss/Hazbin Hotel is running into which is they are doing this type of shit and the show hurts for it.

Most of all I think what makes Hazbin Hotel worse is that of it's portrayal of it's premier rapist character, Valentino. It wants to pay lip service to sexual assault being bad, but then goes around and tries to treat him as a joke character. That's not how it works if you really want to take him seriously as a rapist then he needs to be taken more seriously as a villain. You need to actually portray him as someone who is where he is because he has the skills to do so. Making him dumb and on par with the other Vees just is jarring. And again emphasis on lisp service, is the fact that this show makes casual joke about assault then waves it off as nothing big. It's really two faced like the episode of "Screams Of Silence" which talked about domestic abuse even though Family Guy became infamous for using that sort of stuff as a punchline. It looks more like you want to look fake deep rather than actually tackle a subject matter.

That's the problem that Stans don't understand is that their series has had legit criticisms. They are deluded because they think that Vivziepop is this progressive figure who is going to stand up to the system with her cartoon. One could say that was what FG fans thought but even then they were more aware of the rot than these guys were and didn't make excuses how many unfunny crappy jokes were being bad. The stans just live in their own little world and refuse to think just maybe their series ain't that groundbreaking if another series had the same issues as them.

Are cats important in Catalunya? Barcelona's mascot (they sadly never use) is a cat, and the mascot for the Olympic games in Barna was a cat too. Or is it just coincidence? :eyesemoji:

First of all, I'm very glad to see someone getting the city's shortened named right (Barna). I had almost accepted that it's a lost battle to get foreigners to stop calling it Barça! (Barça means the football team, not the city).

Cats are used as a symbol of Catalonia sometimes, because Catalonia is shortened to "Cat": think for example how the internet domain for sites in the Catalan language is ".cat", how the government of Catalonia is named Generalitat de Catalunya but gets shortened to "GenCat", or how some people cover the E of Spain in the driving plate with a sticker saying "CAT" (this last one used to be very popular in the 2000s and until the early 2010s but stopped because the police got serious in fining the people who had it).

Example of what a Spanish licence plate looks like (all EU countries have the blue band with 1, 2 or 3 letters that identify what EU country it's from) and an example of a plate with the CAT (Catalunya) sticker over the E (España) band.

For this reason, a cat was used for years as a symbol of Catalonia:

It was created by a Catalan independentist organization Lliga Anticolonial (Anti-colonial League) in the late 1990s or early 2000s as a response to the symbolic occupation of the Toro de Osborne (Osborne Bull). For context, the Osborne Bull is this:

The bull is a symbol of Spain. These gigantic (14 metres tall!) billboards in the shape of the bull species used in bullfighting (a Spanish tradition of torturing and slowly killing a bull in public while people cheer, seen as a national symbol of Spain and Spanish manhood) were set up by an alcohol brand since the 1950s. There were dozens of them, next to the highways and roads everywhere in the state of Spain, and this silhouette quickly became a symbol of Spain just as much as the Spanish flag. In fact, you'll find many Spanish flags used by fascists include this bull silhouette at the centre. There are also all types of merch with it and Spanish nationalists often put a sticker in their cars with this silhouette (used to be very popular in the early 2000s, the stickers in cars in general have stopped being so popular nowadays).

In the 1990s, there were new laws in Spain against billboards on roads/highways, because adverts distract drivers and result in accidents. However, this bull had become such a symbol of Spanish nationalism that they made an exception for it. All the billboards in certain places were taken down except for the Osborne bulls.

Meanwhile, as you can imagine many people in the nations occupied by Spain were not happy to have these giant symbols of Spanish nationalism around our land, it feels like a symbol of occupation. Like a "remember we own you". For this reason, independentist groups in the Catalan Countries and the Basque Country often cut down the bulls or sprayed murals and political slogans of liberation on them. When the new laws against billboards came, everyone was expecting to finally have to stop seeing our land branded with these symbols of occupation, but as I said before the Spanish courts did an exception. Then, more people than ever before decided to get organized to cut down the bulls, but they kept putting them back up and persecuting the "vandals", and the Spanish Justice System even gave the Osborne Bull billboard in El Bruc the legal condition of national heritage to legally protect it and be able to persecute activists who protested against it more! (El Bruc is a town in Catalonia that is very symbolic for Catalan people because of the folk tale of the Catalan resistance against French invasion that is one of the most widespread folk tales in Catalonia, but in this town the Spanish Army has had its biggest army headquarters in Catalonia so it has become a place of occupation and stronghold of the Spanish army).

During all of this battle of symbols, the occupied nations came up with their own symbol to symbolize their resistance: the cat and donkey in Catalonia, the cow in Galiza, and the ardi latxa sheep in the Basque Country. Organizations sold stickers of these symbols to raise money for good causes related to our cultures.

(I explained why this autochthonous species of donkey is a symbol of Catalonia in this previous post).

But, in the end, cutting down the bull billboards was successful and many weren't put back up. The last bull billboards in Catalonia was cut down by activists in 2002. Nowadays, you can still find about 100 bull billboards around Spain, but not in Catalonia.

The cat and donkey kept being popular for some more years, but eventually they lost popularity once the bulls were out of our daily lives. For some reason though, the donkey has remained popular as a symbol of Catalan-ness in Northern Catalonia (the part of Catalonia annexed by France, so the one that never had the Osborne Bull in the first place!). If you visit Northern Catalonia, you'll still find many cars with the donkey sticker and many souvenirs with the donkey.

There's the reason why the cat is a symbol of Catalonia, it used to be a very popular one but it has lost popularity nowadays. I must say that it's with this ask that I've seen Barça's mascot for the first time. I didn't even know they had one, but yes, it's a cat. But the mascot for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona (called Cobi) was supposed to be a dog drawn in cubist style. But you're right that it looks like a cat 😅

No chewing necessary my friend I will admit first that I've always been a lot more generous with my PN2 critiques compared to other games I like because I'm actually. Lowkey scared of how the fan base will react 😭 just because Psychonauts 2 really is a good game! And I like certain aspects of it. And also a large part of the fan base really enjoys it. To say my positive thoughts first, I'm glad it exists, I'm glad it's here after a long wait, and I think it's fun to play. It's objectively a good game. A really good game.

WHICH IS WHY I will now put the rest of my rambles under a cut because I'm going to be a little more honest with my thoughts. Keep in mind that these are MY thoughts, just ME, ALONE, MY opinion.

Warning that this is very rambley. I'm sorry. I go off a few tangents. I have a lot to say since my friends and I talk about it quite a lot in my disc and a lot of the points I bring up here are stuff we talk about a lot. Quite passionately, I might add lol

Btw This all entirely about the characters, storyline, lore, etc. This isn't going to be about graphics and the way the characters look between the two games okay?........ Because both of those are WRONG and RoR is PEAK- 🙌🙌🙌

I don't think there's much I can say about the interns that hasn't already been said. I think you already know what I mean by this. While I do like the interns (Adam my beloved ♥️) they really weren't used to their full potential (<- get used to that word here.) A lot of their friendship with Raz felt very forced, it didn't feel earned at all. And don't even get me started on Raz's personality switch.

I WILL ADMIT YES. He was very cute and polite in the first game just as much, amd he wasn't entirely an asshole. However, they took the "cute" meter and cranked it up to 100% in the sequel and it kind of bothers me. It's not only in Psychonauts either! We don't really get a lot of snarky and charismatic video game protags anymore. In my indulgence in late 90s early 2000s video games, both for research and, again, my indulgence, I have found that a lot of games from those times that later got sequels in the late 2010s- early 2020s (Crash Bandicoot and Ratchet and Clank for examples) had the protagonists softened a TON. Example #1 is Ratchet, who was very witty and quippy in the earlier games. But from what I've seen in the latest installment (Rift Apart) he's not as much anymore and is a lot more... "Professional" acting. #2 In Crash 4, Crash is still very cartoony and goofy like always, but it's played off more in a "cute" kind of way, and not as much in an insane, looney-toons Tasmanian Devil kind of way, y'know? Raz, unfortunately suffered the same fate I fear, where the snark was turned down, and the cute factor up. Which really sucks, because I love snarky protagonists! Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, I love those games a ton! Sadly, we don't see any games like that anymore. I really would have loved if Psychonauts 2 leaned into that! Raz would not put up with the interns shit if it was still the first game. And I think the dynamics between him and the interns could have been really interesting if he was able to keep up with them!

On that note, I feel like everyone is so hard on Raz in PN2. Like Jesus christ man, give my kid a break lol. Unlike the first game where Raz was funny because of stuff he said, stuff he interacted with and the way he behaved, a lot of funny moments are at Raz's expense instead. It also really pisses me off with how much the situation with the Lady Lucktopus is held over him. We GET IT. He fucked up, he really did. But FIRST OF ALL. So did the INTERNS. But they do not get as much shit for it as he does, and it pisses me off. And it's very clear that he understands it was wrong, he understands and will never do it again, but he's still getting beat over the head with it.

Another thing (that's more nit-picky if any) is that the environments don't feel as alive as the first game. In Whispsring Rock, it feels like you're actually at a summer camp. Not only is there plenty of wildlife scampering around, but you hear and see bugs and lizards too, you can hear the trees and rushing water, kids talking in distant conversations. It's such a nice environment and I love exploring and just getting lost in it. Psychonauts 2 environments are good, but they don't feel alive. They just feel like any other video game environment to me. It doesn't pull me in much at all, which is a shame because the environments are very beautiful.

Again, possible nit-picky and not really a critique, but keep in mind again that this is all MY thoughts and MY opinion here.

I really, really need to talk about the psychic 7. I have to get my thoughts out. I. I really don't like how much of the game is about the Psychic 7 specifically. IM SORRY. I LIKE THEM A LOT, I REALLY DO.

But, first of all, something about how Ford is connected to Raz's family is really... Huh? It's such a "Never meet your heroes" moment, but also... Did we not already have that with Coach in the first game? And it all feels so. Out of left field! I dunno! But I don't like it! Eghsgshs. It's one of those big story changes/additions that makes me go back to the first game and makes me feel icky when interacting with Ford. I miss when he was just a random a silly old man not a silly old man who fucked up my family.

💧Going to splinter off on a mini-tangent here rq, but the curse too! After the reveal of the curse not being real, which is, y'know, in missable. dialog. Going back to the first game, but ESPECIALLY RoR at one point, feels weird to me! There's a specific scene in RoR near the end where the self destruct sequence is activated and the room begins flooding. The hands of Galochio appear and yadda yadda. But something about the way Raz is panicked about the water hands in that moment, how he tells himself "Don't think about the water curse" repeatedly is just. AUGH. GOD. I stay up at night thinking about it. To go back to those moments and realise that it's all not real is just... Man. And you know, I wouldn't be as butt-hurt about it if they handled they way it was reveal better. The way Ford just waves it off as "Curses aren't real, this is science!" Is like. Are you serious. Is that it?...

Another thing, on the topic of "science" is that Psychonauts 2 feels like it lost a lot of the like. Paranormal whimsy. It's all very... Scientific and straightforward. I don't know how to explain it? I just miss how in PN and RoR yeah, a lot of stuff in this universe is clearly scientific BUT there was also hint of something paranormal, and dare I say magical going on.💧

Okay, back to the Psychic 7 (or 6 or whatever idk I'm tired hsgsgsh) I actually like how we get to learn a bit more about the founding members of the Psychonauts and get to meet them. At least if it was a "bit more". What I don't like is how much of the game is centered around them at the expense of the original cast. New characters are good, and fun and all that. But... After PN1 I'm not left wanting to learn more about the Psychonauts and the founding members... I'm left wanting to learn more about Sasha and Milla, Lili, Coach and Raz! I'm left wanting to see real spy stuff! The mental part is fun too, I mean. It's literally the defining aspect of Psychonauts. But so is the spying. The Lady Lucktopus segments are my favorite because we get to be in that sneaky and stealthy environment and it is really frickin fun! I want more moments like that! Anyways uhm. Back go characters.

The original team, (Sasha, Milla, Coach and Lili. And Raz too I guess, but I'm mostly refering to these four.) who I will dub the dream team, were sidelined hard for the Psychic 7 and the interns. As I said before, I was left wanting more of them at the end of PN and I'll just say it, they were not in PN2 as much as they deserved to be. People waited 15+ years to see these characters in action again and they're just so- absent in the game! It's sad! This isn't to say that introducing new characters is bad. I think Hollis and Truman were done really well in this game, especially Hollis. I like the general Idea about the Psychic 7. But... They weren't who I wanted a sequel for.

But you know what large group of new characters I would have wanted more of that weren't in the first game? The Aquatos. My God, they are literally one of the biggest ties within the story in PN2 and yet they still went so underutilized. Dare I say, in favor of the Psychic 7...

Theres sooo much stuff in the Li-po doc about Raz's family and just the Psychonauts organization as a whole that I wish we got for the sequel. Oh man do I love the li-po doc. There's a lot of stuff from it that I prefer and enjoy much more than what we got in PN2. It's such a shame to see all those really intriguing story bits and potential lore go to waste, it really is.

I'm still left feeling unsatisfied at the end of it all, but not in the fun, "I want more!" Kind of unsatisfied like the first game. It's more like a melancholic, empty and unfulfilled feeling...

It has its own charm but its a charm so strikingly different from the original's that it feels almost disconnected entirely from the first game.

My closing thoughts are, that Psychonauts 2 is a good game. But in my eyes it's also a monument of what could have been. Of wasted potential. Of something that was great, but could have been better.

Okay so for my ii gijinkas i have a really smart thought and texi said i should tell the world because i am just that smart (/silly)

Oh also ii17-18 spoilers

So. in ii17 when everyone died and COULD NOT be revived (this is important) i think that they would have all ‘reset.’ 

Keep in mind that normal revival would not do this. As the contestants progress through the show, they change their appearance. (like clothes, hair, etc.) and since mephone is going through the show with them and seeing them as they compete he knows what their styles are and how they present themselves, so when he revives them they come back the way that they were right when they died. (with some altercations, for example if someone was injured when they are revived they wouldn't be injured) 

But, in ii17-18 when mephone could NOT revive them, mephonex/cobs did something (like some kind of hacking) so that mephone could not revive them, basically causing a ‘factory reset’ for all the contestants. This means that however they looked before they died, they did not save. Meaning that they look exactly like mephone wanted them to. Their default. (aka what they looked like at the start of the show/when they joined)

What I mean is that they would look like what mephone imagined them to be (as we see in the scene where he is drawing the contestants.) their hair, clothes, makeup, whatever would be what mephone came up with when he came up with the show. 

Obviously, it wasn't a total factory reset, because as we see all the contestants still retain character development and also the big thing, still exists. 

Let me use my taco gijinka as an example. 

At the start of the show, we see her with long sleeves (displaying she is armless) and messy hair. When she reveals her arms, she pulls her hands out from her sleeves to display that yes, she actually has arms. (long sleeves playing on the retractable arm thing). 

In season 2, we see her appear more ‘villain’ like, and more businesslike and professional. We see her wearing nicer, more businesslike clothes. Her hair is very neat, and we see her roots have grown out. She also has heavy eyeshadow (showing she is a badass villain). When she gets the bowtie, it stays on her person until we see her die in ii17/her in mephone with everyone else in ii18. 

In ii18/movie her design has changed from her s2. It is similar to her s1, but there are differences. Instead of a long sleeve shirt under her tacocat shirt, we see a tank top. Her hair is neater than we see it in s1, but still a bit messy. 

You may be asking, “but Marzz, that's not what her s1 design looks like, and you said that everyone went back to their default!” Well that's just it! Since taco put on a front at the start of the show, she changed her appearance so she would fit the character she was playing. The reason her s1 outfit stayed was because that's how mephone saw her, his most recent memory of her was her wearing that outfit. That's why it was saved. 

What mephonex/cobs did was basically a memory wipe or, as i said, factory reset. Everyone was reverted back to their true defaults. So, if, for example, salt and pepper were wearing late 2000s/early 2010s fashion at the start of the show (because that is when the show started), their fashion may have changed a bit as time went on, but when they are reset in ii18, they go back to their s1 hair and outfits. Contestants who changed their appearance to be more complicated (more accessories, more intricate hairstyles) would be reverted back to their more simple outfits from when they joined the show.

- He’s a shy guy, he probably confessed to you as red as a tomato and stuttering as if he’s about to go into cardiac arrest.

- He’s very interested in nature. He loves birds and squirrels. Probably has a dozen encyclopedias in his place about various animals, earth and space.

- Absolutely loves lofi/indie/indie folk music. Usually listens to whatever calms his mind, not so keen to rock/metal/pop music but he likes to listen to late 2000s / early 2010s hits because of Kung Lao and Johnny.

- Plant dad. He has lots of plants, flowers and vegetables in his garden and in the house. He likes taking care of them, and spends a lot of time to make sure every one of them is healthy.

- Loves both dogs and cats, so he’s neither a dog or a cat person. He would love to adopt one each, if not more. Knowing his love for animals, he would always leave a big bowl of water and food outside his garden so strays can drink and eat; regularly checks it so he can fill them up when they’re empty. Definitely has a bird feeder somewhere.

- His love languages are words of affirmation and acts of service. He will shower you with compliments, always support your decisions (unless they’re concerning) and he will do his best helping you with all the work. He will help you with chores, running errands, cooking, baking, even your own work if he has an idea of what it is. He loves giving gifts as well but he makes sure it’s either handmade or something he thinks you would really like.

- He has a super calm personality. He’s a pacifist, he sees fight as the absolute last option in a situation.

- He’s a stay at home guy, not really keen on social stuff but he’ll have a great time with you and friends if you come up with outside activities.

- Crowds aren’t generally his thing, but he will find calmness in watching people when he’s sitting somewhere having his tea. It brings him peace to know everyone has their own lives just like he does. It makes him feel more alive.

- When he takes you out on dates, it’s usually coffee dates or a small street food place that makes good food. He’s not a fan of extravagant stuff, so he keeps it as minimal as he can.

- He doesn’t drink, and he doesn’t smoke. This doesn’t mean he won’t drink at all though; he will drink 1-2 bottles of beer occasionally in social settings, but that’s about it. Since he barely drinks, he’s quite lightweight and will get drunk easily.

- He’s a touchy one, but not in the inappropriate way. He loves holding you, hugging you, kissing your head, nose and forehead. He likes to kiss your forehead the most.

- He loves reading interesting facts about our world. His Instagram reels are full of zoology, geology etc. kind of nerdy posts. When he watches tv, it’s usually documentary channels. He doesn’t like following the news because there’s usually sad or stressful things.

- Very positive person, he will look at everything on the brightest side possible.

- His sister would love you and you’d frequently have girl nights together, sometimes even pull pranks on Raiden if you’re feeling mischievous enough.

- You’re both his partner in life and his best friend (along with Kung Lao, CAN’T erase him from this part). He will share EVERYTHING with you, and will be really happy every time you do the same.

- Very easy to communicate. No arguments happen in the relationship because you two handle it like two grown adults by communicating your feelings and understanding each other. He has very high empathy, and will do his best to get your point if there’s a disagreement.

- He gets cold easily, so he will wear the fluffiest and warmest sweaters during winter. You will find him wrapped around blankets while he’s watching TV, with hot chocolate or tea in his mug.

- He likes playing board and card games, his favorites are the ones that you need to use your thinking skills.

- When he watches TV series, he will resort to sitcoms more than fantasy, drama etc, he thinks he already has enough fantasy elements in his life thanks to Liu Kang and being an Earthrealm Champion. He also loves animation movies; especially classics like Ice Age, Kung Fu Panda and Shrek.

- His favorite Disney princess is probably Mulan.

- He prefers village life over city life.

- He has a light blue pickup truck and it’s still in perfect condition despite being very old.

- He loves thrifting and will often go thrift shopping with you.

- He has a big library in the house filled with informative and literary books.

- Loves buying small decorations for the house. I believe he’d keep it more minimal with warm colors, and it’d feel very cozy inside.

- He works out in the house once in a while, but farming is usually enough physical activity for him.

- He will meditate regularly.

- He loves all the traditional Chinese food. Wonton soup makes him feel all warm and happy, and he’s obsessed with Kung Pao chicken.

- He’s interested in every mythology, but his favorites are Egyptian and Greek mythologies because they’re very complex and he can be occupied reading them and thinking over them for hours.

- He loves word puzzle games.

- He adores every traditional festival and will drag you with him and Kung Lao. His favorites are Chinese New Year and Mid Autumn Festival; he loves eating as many moon cakes as he can during Mid Autumn. He also loves seeing you in traditional Chinese clothing when you go to the festivals with them.

- He’s not a big fan of anime, but will watch them with Kung Lao and then complain about some nonsense, making Kung Lao side eye him and say “shut up, your sitcoms are way worse than this.”

- His YouTube recommendations consists of animal/nature/space documentaries, mythology and philosophy along with funny animal videos.

- (Very self indulgent) if you watch true crime documentaries, it makes him worry about your mental health sometimes, but you reassure him that everything is fine.

- Hates big lights, loves dim lighting. He will only keep smaller lamps on in the house. He thinks it’s more calming and easy on the eyes.

- He will frequently light candles and use incense. He might even use sage to help fight off negative energies once in a while; he’s a believer in spirits and such things like that.

- Very helpful towards everyone around him even when he doesn’t necessarily know the person. He will offer his help to anyone struggling with a task, will always help old ladies and grandpas with carrying their stuff around the village.

- He writes poems sometimes, but no one knows about them except you.

- He doesn’t know a lot about computers and phones, so if he struggles in something he will ask you instead of trying to handle it himself.

- He’s very interested in nature photography. He will never miss a chance of snapping a good scenery photo.

- He’s better at cooking than he is at baking. He once burnt a pie and mourned it for 3 days because he spent so much time on it.

- He can sew and crochet. If you have any damaged clothing, he will fix them up right away.

- Never wastes food. If you are picky, he will eat what you don’t off your plate even if he’s full.

- Loves preparing you breakfast and sometimes does it while you’re asleep, bringing it to you to the bed with flowers he picked off the garden.

- He can sing well, but is insecure about it despite your encouragement.

- He once tried skating after Kung Lao gaslit him, and he almost cracked his butt after falling.

- He loves bicycle rides. He will go on rides every day usually during evening, and will watch the sunset in somewhere nice before going back home.

- Hiking is a good hobby for him. He loves taking walks in forests and he likes camping a lot. He will bring you with him when he goes camping and hiking, sometimes Kung Lao will join. You guys sit around the bonfire as you eat marshmallows on sticks and Kung Lao babbles scary stories, trying to creep you out.

- Fengjian Teahouse is his favorite place to spend time when he’s in the village. Everyone knows and adores him.

- He would listen to your chatter about anything for hours. Your hyperfixations are entertaining for him and he will try to learn as much as he can so he can join the conversation because he knows you appreciate it a lot.

Everyone is in the comments like "yaaaayyy they're gonna meet irl and Vikki is going to make things right :3" but I have a very strong feeling that we're just at the top of the roller coaster here and Vikki's resolve is amazing but I do think things are going to get very ugly before they get better.

But I mean, I think Milo is also kind of written to send up these red flags with the reader, and that's a big part of the tragedy of his character, because he's so intensely lonely but also this is a series that seriously fucks with both your sense of compassion and your survival instincts. Like you're watching someone fall into that horrible feedback loop of taking the bait of trolls, trying to reclaim their online narrative for themselves and just giving them more fodder in the process, and you're just like "Dude, log off, LOG OFF--!" And it is a story that feels intensely personal because you have this kind of... Late 2000's-Early 2010's period piece factor of it, but there's also like... the whole transness-as-affecting-arrested-development-because-you-never-had-a-real-adolescence factor about it. Like all of the characters are in their own respective time warps, seemingly no one's really moved past 2013.

And then you also have that weird tango of attention and alienation. The sheer loneliness that permeates the whole thing. To be honest, a couple of years ago, back when they would show up on my feed, I never really 'got' why people would post self-harm photos. It's like, "Why would you do that? Are you posting that so people will tell you not to do that? Like what is the endgame here?" But somehow when you're seeing these posts, and you're seeing them through the POV's of people within the story, and there is a transformative quality to it. Suddenly all the vulnerability is shared.

Also I feel like Gage is a red herring. I feel like the story has a lot more to kind of... uncoil and say about these increasingly complex relationships between the internet and marginalized identities and violence. It would be too easy if Gage is being manipulated by Griffin.

Again, highly recommend if you liked "We Are All Going To The World's Fair."

I had a weirdest dream.

RWBY: the Movie, but directed like those late 2000s/early 2010s adaptations.

By that I mean the movie itself tries to cram as much plot as possible into the 90 minutes runtime (say, volumes 1 through 3), and the point-of-view character is more of a secondary character (Jaune) through which we see the main characters (Ruby and co.).

What's weird is that I even pictured the visuals.

It would have started with Jaune as a kid being bullied by everyone at his village for being half-faunus (his mother side, hare). His dad tries to cheer him with the tales of huntsmen and huntresses, but the stress of an entire village gets to him, so he runs away to become a huntsman and be more for his family's sake.

Cut to the classical montage of visuals and music intro of movies from that period, with a cover/remake of 'This Will Be the Day' that focuses more on the battery than on the singing.

The visuals themselves are Team RWBY in their trailer fights, only hyper saturated in a way that they were more like flat colors silhouettes with only small break (Ruby was all black and red, Weiss white and silver, Blake black and white and Yang gold and black).

It's all quick cuts between all four, gaining speed between the cuts until they're interrupted by the big bold letters of "RWBY: the Movie". Then those get smashed by Team RWBY jumping to the side in a team shot, followed by teams JNPR and CFVY, Penny and Sun, finally cut to black to display the in memoriam for Monty Oum.

Plot wise, the first act is teams RWBY and JNPR (without their names or teams formed yet) learning the ropes of Beacon academy, with Team CFVY being some sort of 'the ace' for the academy. At first Ruby and Jaune are antagonistic, with the 'teams' heading to a fight until they're interrupted by two giant grimms attacking Beacon. They learn to work together and all it's good.

Second act is a crimewave by Roman and the White Fang, but it's revealed none of the White Fang are faunus and they're posing as such to cover their tracks. Ruby meets Penny and Jaune meets Sun, with both teams converging in a fight with Adam and the fake White Fang (forcefully revealing Blake is a faunus and ex-member of the real White Fang).

In the end it's revealed that it was all a distraction and the real deal was an all out assault (Fake Fang and a wave of grimms) on Beacon. Big fight again, with Team CFVY joining in and showing off. In the middle of it, Ruby, Weiss, Jaune and Pyrrha make their way through a literal wall of grimms into the main building, witnessing Ozpin dueling a hooded woman (and getting thrown out of a window).

Final fight is with all four tag teaming the hooded woman, with Red Like Roses in the background. They're overwhelming her until she lands an arrow to Pyrrha's heel, which makes Ruby's eye glow and she goes berserk, blitzing the hooded woman so fast it looks like she's in four places at the same time, forcing her to escape.

Jaune saves Pyrrha's life by discovering his semblance (a plotpoint of the movie), and Ozpin appears again. He explains that what happened was in order to uncover a secret in Beacon Academy that could either save the world, or set it on fire.

Movie ends with a ceremony where Teams RWBY and Team JNPR becoming official and running off the academy's entrance for a wide team shot.

So, yeah. My dreams are weird like that.

Well, neither was I!! But here are some tips:

Define Your General Setting

Sure, high school has a different feel compared to an average town/city setting. However, it is still a part of the bigger community, and will be impacted by external factors.

What part of the world are your writing about? What's the general economy like? What's the most common occupation of the kid's parents? What's the prevailing fashion/art/music style?

Your teens will be impacted by the popular culture and trends of the time, so start by outlining the general setting!

Fashion

I think this is where schools have changed the most. There are going to be some overlaps between early 2010s and late 2000s, so if you think in the direction of Y2K fashion, it should fit.

On a general note, I think 2010s fashion was vibrant, with lots of colors and flashy items...

Side fringes and backcombed/straightened hair were still very popular

most girls had huge messy sock buns on top of their heads

boys had the Justin Bieber cut.

Jack Wills and Hollister were pretty popular, and a lot of girls had a Paul's Boutique jacket and a Jane Norman bag for their PE kit (or one of the Hollister bags with a topless guy on).

Converse were universally cool, and there were lots of imitation brands.

Open flannel shirt over a t-shirt was a pretty popular outfit.

Skinny jeans and band t-shirts

bright chunky rubber band bracelets.

Vans were cool among the alternative kids.

Getting different colours on your braces was cool.

Most of the boys had at least one of those t-shirts with the buttons and the mismatched cuffs.

School-uniform-wise, short ties with big fat knots were cool, and hard kids would pluck a stripe or two out of their tie.

Tucking in shirts was initially not cool, then it became cool to tuck at the front but not the back.

Lots of boys wore black trainers, and lots of girls wore those ballet pumps.

Girls doing their lips with their foundation, with a thick ring of black eyeliner and spidery clumpy mascara - and having a visible orange line where your foundation met your neck was common.

Multiple ear piercings were popular with the alternative crowd

Smartphones were already popular, and with the introduction of Snapchat(2011) and Instagram(2010), the social media hype was just starting to boom

Phones were allowed in the classroom, but phones/laptops weren't an important part of school work like it is now.

For YA Novels - Be Timeless

Before you start doing any of the things above, remember this if you're writing a YA novel: The key of this genre is to feel somewhat timless, taking readers back to their high school years no matter when and where they've gone through it.

High school is the phase where many people feel awkward, unsure of themselves, feeling special in their own head but knowing that they're not really.

And it's not like the problems just disappear when we hit adult life. A major reason why YA novels are so popular is that they address themes that are repeatedly felt by the general human being, often in a such a direct, straightforward way that provides vicarious satisfaction.

For a while I’ve thought about having a Kirbysona, personally deciding between NESP and Poppy Bro, but I wanted to ask you something

Is it normal to have multiple sonas for a particular fandom?

Lemme ask, What is "normal?" A set of standards made by someone else?

I wonder how many people here were online during like the late 2000s, early 2010s- when I remember seeing "Mary Sue" discourse happening a lot in the Kirby fandom. It was so mean-spirited for no reason. There was a lot of pointing and laughing and gossiping about characters that didn't "conform to a certain standard of canon." What really was the harm of appropriately shipping OCs and canon? Giving them tons of cool powers or being best friends with their favorite characters and saving the universe a bunch? The existence of someone else's story and characters doesn't erase or overwrite anyone else's!

I'm really happy to see that negative attitude has faded over time and there are more positive celebrations of people's characters, like the OC Tournament or Artfight! :)

Anyway, sonas represent YOU! If you feel like an NESP one day, and a Poppy Bro another, I say be BOTH! Be a shapeshifter! Or just have multiple forms! That doesn't need to be logically justified! We are fluid beings, and allowed to change and feel differently as time passes! Don't make chains for yourself by conforming to what is "normal!" Break free! Keep your sense of whimsy! Especially in a universe like Kirby where basically anything is possible! The only rule is that there are no rules!! When it comes to your art and writing, you are your own boss! >:D

You guys know the fanfic by SilverQueen Dreaming of Sunshine. The main character is Shikako Nara, Shikamaru's twin sister, it's a very well written fanfiction that gives depth to filler arcs and side characters.

It's a common fanfic trope that she's unkillable and very experimental with her seals and a running gag in the gardenverse fandom is that she is either a god, and eldritch being or when she "dies" she reincarnated into different fandoms like Star Wars, GoT, or anime and other shows and books.

(Shikamaru also has an OC younger brother born after the Chunin Exams named Kinokawa "Kino" Nara)

What I'm trying to get at is imagine Shikako and Shikamaru "die" and reincarnated in Little Witch Academia as Atsuko "Akko" Kagari and Atsushi "Atsu(or whatever nickname that fits)" Kagari before the series begins. The SI for Shikako dies around the early 2000s - 2010s or early - mid 90s and LWA came out in early/mid 2010s (2013). The pair of twins go to see a magic show(Shiny Chariots) and realise their chakra had been stolen.

They begin to research everything they can and find out about Luna Nova, Jennifer, Witches and magic, and Blytonbury and make plans to go their while they both experiment and study/train in different things. Since Luna Nova is an all girls school and Appleton is an all boys school so when they both arrive they part ways after figuring out a way to establish contact via bird messaging since no chakra means no summoning, mental link/genjutsu, instant travel and unless magically powered they can't use electronics in Luna Nova.

Shikamaru meets the Appleton boys and years of diplomacy, heir training, and being a shinobi while studying the science of this new world (because if he went into politics on earth I would be terrified for the poor boy) is getting along well with both Frank and Andrew but not the kid who challenged Amanda to a duel.

At Luna Nova Shikako is experimenting with everything she sees that the snake coming up to her is a fake and spots Sucy, she still asks Lotte for a ride to the school because Callista is late, But instead of it being ignorance that gets them stuck in the Arcturus forest it's pure curiosity on the school's defenses and to see if Arcturus is anything like the Nara forest or the Forest of Death in Konoha. She just straight up pours salt into the leyline while flying taking Lotte and Sucy with her.

When "Akko" meets Diana and Amanda she's instantly reminded of Ino and Naruto respectively. Diana for her appearance (platinum blonde hair, pale skin, blue eyes and being a talented healer and heiress to an important family) Amanda for the way she acted originally (the pranks and mischief while needing parental attention)

I haven't decided how the rest of the story goes and imagining the twins saying very traumatising thins about their upbringings (because they are both still child soldiers) and everyone being horrified and about to call CPS and when asked about why they're so desperate to find Shiny Chariot they explain how she stole they're Chak-Magic and how they can't go home because of it leading other people to think the two got kicked out of their home because they were powerless.

When the dance happens and it's time for the Luna Nova girls to mix in with the Appleton boys they (the RGB teams) think they see Akko who cut her hair short and is wearing a suit until they remember she's in detention for blowing up the lab (I chose this instead of the extra class because I thought it would make more sense because she does need to talk to her brother) and he's just laughing his ass off when he asks where his sister is and is going "only a lab!? I've seen her blow up an entire building"(I've seen her blow up entire cities and reshape maps)

He goes into shock and gets homesick when he sees Diana because Ino was his second sister, another twin or a triplet. Ino is only a few hours younger than Shikamaru and Shikako, the twins are September 22 and Ino was September 23, they grew up together and their families have been tied together for generations along with Chouji. She has a similar air to her that Ino had when they were kids, he finds out she's an heiress to an important family, and that she is really a good person in spite of first impressions that really just wants to do well by people and is quite talented for her age. The appearance is uncanny to him from hair, to skin, to eye colour (except Diana looks less Asian, not being racist just realistic because the elemental countries are all based off of Asian countries)

I still haven't decided how the rest of the story goes but how do you like the prompt.

the loptous cult is still cooking up plans in the background, this time they’re witches (gender neutral), i wanted the chalphy/belhalla/velthomer extended family to be humans though so i think deirdre and arvis are like…1/4? 1/8? witch - julia and julius do get magical powers though. inspired by another AU i saw floating around, they’re like artificial creations the loptous cult made to try to resurrect loptous (again) (not sure what loptous is here, maybe some powerful wizard idk) using deirdre and arvis’ DNA they got somehow, and so when the plan eventually gets leaked there’s this kind of joint custody situation where the twins spend half the time with the chalphys, half with the velthomers. (so like they see deirdre and arvis as their parents but it’s kind of a weird clone-ish situation? idk.)

castle nordion has ares nanna and diarmuid living in it, but i’m not sure what the chronological ages are here yet? i still have eldigan as sigurd’s bestie (along with quan) from back in the 80s, and i think what happens is that sigurd was a vampire hunter but quit after he met eldigan, although eldigan gets killed eventually by someone else. (i feel bad for killing off like half the nordions but…its jugdral.) lachesis is also dead, i think death by sunlight to go with the yied desert thing, so maybe to save finn or someone…? the issue is that i now have to figure out why the gen 2 nordion trio still hunt humans if their parents had human friends :P so maybe its a situation where they blame the humans for their parents death, probably pushed by grahnye who’s alive for a bit longer (but still gets caught by vampire hunters too). (beowulf was a vampire too since he’s nanna and diarmuid’s bio dad but i think he lives somewhere else, like probably went undercover and had fergus at some point, who’s a half-vampire)

everyone who’s from grannvale is human, and i think there’s a vampire hunting organization floating around here? like the supernatural stuff i think isn’t really known but there’s an undercover organization type deal going on. so after sigurd leaves he doesn’t say anything to deirdre or the kids, which eventually leads to the main plot with seliph and lana’s vampire adventures.

there’s a side thing going on over in thracia where i think the leonster/thracia conflict is still happening but now there’s werewolves involved, so like i see it where quans a full werewolf, same with the thracia royal fam, but ethlyns a human so leif and altena are both half-werewolves. on full moons they don’t fully transform and just get ears and a tail, as well as slightly more cranky than usual lol. (unless to go with the holy blood situation in canon, altena got the powers but leif didn’t? not sure) i haven’t really thought about this side of it yet bc it’s more of a subplot but this way the sigurd/eldigan/quan and seliph/leif/ares trios all cover the main three factions: humans, vampires, werewolves.

i was wondering if i should include zombies and fairies like sims 3 did but i think that’s making things way too complicated tbh 😭

Let’s stop brand-focusing!

Today I wanted to touch on a very prevalent situation that has been going on in most jfashion circles: the focus on brands!

A lot of the styles we adore and love were mostly popular in Japan during the late 2000s- early 2010s, meaning that most of the influential brands for these styles are defunct/ focusing on another aesthetic. We can especially see this with Himekaji! The brand Liz Lisa and M*A*R*S, pioneers of what himekaji and gyaru were back in the day, have dropped that style and are currently focusing on Jirai/Ryousangata (although, we’re seeing a bit more gyaru coded prints lately!). So naturally, finding those pieces we see on old street snaps and catalog photos is a tricky thing.

Same thing happens with Fairy Kei Unfortunately brands like Milklim and ManiaQ closed their shops a long time ago, and Bodyline, whose panniers are in multiple street snaps and outfits, have stopped making more of their fairy coded items. I believe Listen Flavor has been producing less fairy-able pieces as well, although they have always catered to a great variety of aesthetics and I’m not well versed in the brand as of now.

Since we’ve seen a resurgence of fairy kei as well as other jfashion styles due to the rise of TikTok and Pinterest, the demand for these old, deadstock items has skyrocketed! We see ISOs* and people actively searching for these pieces through second-hand marketplaces. And while there is nothing wrong with that, a lot of resellers take advantage of this situation!

And here’s where things get tricky: people cave and spend hundreds on a piece that was originally 30 dollars, which inflates prices greatly and makes these brands inaccessible to us all.

But, Why are brands so important to us?

We are so used to looking at an outfit and wanting those exact same things, which ends up in price inflation and, well, everyone wearing the same stuff! At a time where mercari jp is this popular, people are no longer trying to work with what they have or thrift, because we think we can find these exact items that other people have, hence the search for “rare” items.

I would like you to ask yourself this question when you want a certain piece: if this piece wasn’t rare/sought after, would I actually want it as much? This will help you find your personal style and keep your collection in tone with your very own taste.

Now, more importantly, we need to start thrifting, up-cycling and DIYing again! DIY is in the very foundations of this fashion. One of the people who influenced fairy kei the most is Tavuchi, Creator of Spank! , and her shop is jam-packed with pieces made out of recycled fabric!

These are one of a kind items that you will cherish forever, and why it’s not a bad idea to start picking up some DIY skills like sewing or crocheting! Here are some gloves I knit based off of a picture I found on Pinterest:

And let’s not forget about thrifting! This is the really fun part. Not only can you find pastel clothes, but UNIQUE pastel clothes! You might find something that you really love. I mean, the famous vintage fancy sweaters were mostly thrifting at the beginning! And if you find something fairy-able, you can always get crafty and give it that perfect fairy kei look. Get cute button pins, make some fluffy stars and add it to your pieces. It really makes a difference!

absolutely diabolical has the biggest tumblr fanbase of all the f1bands due to being a 2000s band and also really really gay and rpfable, so much of it is based off the documentary, there is so so many fics across livejournal, tumblr, wattpad, ao3

everyone just wants to be or be with jense, music nerds going crazy over simi and their respective instruments, there is one tumblr user who was one of mark's 10 australian fans and has stuck with the band since before they were a band who is lowkey tumblr famous and is the go to person if you have a diabolical query, they're also one of the people who help with this massive archive/update blog that is a must follow for any diabolical fan. this is where most fans found out about multi 21 drama, band break up, solo jense career, THE award show etc,

A New Beginning

Oh boy. I have not been on this website in probably over 10 years now. Anyone who is old enough to remember early 2010's internet knows this website. If you're too young to remember, you're probably too young to be absorbing my art. I've long thought about having a blog hosted directly on my website (www.christinafuego.com), however GoDaddy doesn't seem to have the customization settings that they have here. Who even knows if anyone will read this. Tumblr is dead right? And besides, it would be rather narcissistic of me to think anyone dare give a fuck what I have to say.

Being back on here after so many years is comforting to me. 15 years ago a 9 year old Christina would be so fucking proud to see herself at 23 writing this from her own apartment, sitting inches away from her own home recording studio!!! Also typing this on a Macbook laptop.. the ultimate status symbol in my young eyes. (as well as the iPhone of course).

I must have the worst case of imposter syndrome ever. At least 3 times a week I stare around my studio apartment and look in my dresser mirror. I cannot believe there is a grown woman staring back at me in the mirror. Something nobody tells you about getting into your early 20s is that you go through what I am going to call "second puberty". Second puberty started for me at 22, when I first got in the place I am living in now. Basically I am set back to the same level of emotional instability and horniness as being 13. Only this time around being actually sexually active and having more life experience (ie experiencing actual nervous breakdown + years of untreated mental illness which does not even compare to any gripes I may have had from 11-13.)

I'm chalking this up to being the new bitch on the block in regards to this neighborhood I moved to. I moved from a different state, back to a borough of my home city that I have no ties to. I know nobody here. At first, I worked two part time jobs to pay rent, while also releasing multiple singles with no marketing budget. So they're effectively invisible for now. I ended up getting a good enough paying full time job where I can work only one job, however the corporate world is definitely not for me. The work week drains me and I am putting my all into making time for creative and promotional endeavors. At least I have a little money to invest in this shit now??? Where there is a will there is a way and I am a stubborn little bitch. I've got a track record to prove.

I am declaring now that this blog is gonna be 100% raw and unfiltered Christina. I'll be the first to admit it is very hard for me to hop in front of my phone and spout all this off to a camera and put it on TikTok... that's what they want music artists like myself to be now... TikTokers. I am not a TikToker. I am a starving artist who posts on social media only because I have to. In reality I am a socially awkward shy girl who sits in her room writing songs and hiding from the world.

I am hoping to use this to sort of live journal my career and life trials and tribulations.

Lately I feel like I am living in a different decade, century even. Just like everyone else nowadays, I miss the early 2000s. The 2000s period. That perfect sweet spot where we did have computers, but social media and smartphones did not completely overrun our society. People spoke face to face, and they made eye contact when speaking to you. If they wanted to "surf the net", they had to go home and wait 15 minutes for the computer to boot up. I'm tired of driving into Manhattan and seeing people wandering into traffic looking at their phone. I hope everyone who does that gets ran over.

I'm going off on a rant now. What I really mean to say is the current state of our world feels so overwhelming to me that I cannot even force myself to be excited for the future, that includes my own. Since about 2022, I have hardly absorbed any NEW media. For me, it's been about discovering old shit that's only new to me cause I'm actually a fucking baby.

Why does it feel like the color has been drained out of our world over the last 20 years? Why is minimalism even a thing? When did the music industry (THE HIPHOP INDUSTRY) become any and every loser with 10k+ followers dropping songs out of nowhere? I am the youngest old head you will probably ever meet. It does bug me that none of those people have a knowledge of the history of this genre, or a passion for the craft. Does it make me sick? Yes. Do I feel envy? Hell no. I believe in myself and my talents and much like Plankton plotting on how to get Krabs' secret formula, I am plotting on how to crack the code and the algorithm to make me a fucking mega star.
