Chapter Eight - She’s Right On Time 🎶

Summary: You and Steve welcome your baby girl during Christmas time and Steve realizes both of you are exactly where you should be and he isn’t going anywhere.

I'm a man with so much tension, far too many sins to mention

Steve isn’t sure what to do with himself. He feels useless considering your mother practically kicked him out of the hospital to pick up dinner and make sure the house was ready for your arrival. All he could bring himself to do was pace up and down the living room as he waited for you to get here. He was supposed to be apart of the ride from the hospital, but things just didn’t work out like that. So he did careful work of turning on all the Christmas lights and setting the table for the pizza and wings dinner he had just picked up. All because the baby was coming home tonight.

He nearly jumps when he can hear the footsteps in the street, suddenly feeling the need to turn the choral music up higher, and pile more wood onto the fire. He just wanted the atmosphere to be complete because he had waited forever for this moment. Better late than never, she was just on time for him, exactly where she should be. The both of you. Steve is filled with nerves, cursing himself for feeling this way about something that should be so natural. It was you after all, the girl of his dreams, the woman he loved more than anyone or anything. Well at least until now because there was another girl in his life. Brand new and an extension of the both of you. He found himself hoping she would like him, as silly as that sounded.

"Daddy, you home?" your familair voice coos out as the door clicks open. Steve is scrambling to meet you, heart softnening at the soft glow on you face and the small smile you offer him. The baby bundled in your arms, winter hat almost too big for her head, she looks so small like this.

"You made it" Steve breathes a sigh of relief, feeling the nerves lessen slightly now that you had made it back home safe to him. His hazel eyes are cast on the baby as he presses the softest of kisses to your lips, as if you would break from just one touch.

"Yes and I'm starved" you tell him, offering the baby into his arms. His stomach drops, carefully cradling the six pound nothing child into his arms as you make your way to the scent of pizza and wings. Alone in the entry hall he takes a moment to stare back into the bright blue eyes of the baby, his baby. Just the two of them, the first of many, and for the first time he understood all of your fears from before. His heart was truly outside of his chest and in the form of something so small he couldn't nearly wrap his head around it. She was right on time. Right where she should be, in his arms forever and ever.

"Your Mom go home?" Steve questions as he walks into the kitchen, eyes barely leaving his daughters as he finds you sat at the table already halfway through an entire slice. He was sure you were over hospital food by now so it was no surprise you were trying to replenish your energy with some food that was actually enjoyable.

"Yes, after I practically begged her. I just wanted to finally be alone with my favorite people" you smile around a bite of your food and Steve blushes as if you two were still just teenagers. Slowly he maneuvers his way into the seat beside you and you couldn't help but feel your heart soar over the fact you finally had a little family. Just the three of you sat around the ktichen table for the very first of many meals.

"She's so small" Steve whispers, feeling like his heart was in his throat. When he had dreamed up this life for himself he never actually saw it coming true. Not after all the heart ache and pain he had been through.

"You wouldn't be saying that if you had been the one to push her out" you tease and he laughs lightly, the babies big bright eyes slowly fluttering closed as she begins to fall asleep in her Dad's arms. Steve can't look away so he doesn't see your hand reach out to brush some of his hair back. He smiles lightly as you kiss the side of his head.

"You think she'll like me?' Steve questions and you know exactly what he means. She was only a baby now but with time she would grow up to form her own opinions, probably put the both of you through hell. Steve as a man with so much tension and a lifetime of sins, was allowed to have his doubts. She didn't have to take it but Steve had become a changed man, one you had no doubt your daughter would love endlessly.

"She's going to love you Steve, adore you actually. I already know you'll be the fun parent and I'll be the strict one" you say and he snorts, turning to kiss your hand that you had left rested on his shoulder. As he stares into your eyes he realizes that you were right where you should be as well. You gave him a baby girl as the best Christmas gift he had ever recieved but you were also just in time for him. His heart freshly recovering from being broken and you had taken care of him since. He wasn't going nowhere, he would still choose to live in this complicated world full of monsters that had scarred him, the very world you both shared.

Good or bad, right or wrong, you never missed a cue or lost a beat. Everytime Steve tripped up you were still there when he would need you. He should have known you always would be, that you find the perfect moment every time to be right where you should be. All the moments from meeting you, to the first date, first kiss, first time, first apartment, marriage, and now the very baby he held delicately in his arms. You had given him everything just as he needed it and you were everything. You were both right on time for him.

"Even if you're strict, you'll still be the best Mom" Steve assures you and you smile, shoving away the now empty plate of food that you had needed desperatley. As of this moment it was Christmas time in your shared home, while your husband held your first child. No moment before or after this will truly ever compare to this one. A moment where all the pieces are perfectly in place and you are both right where you should be.

"I'm not quite sure I should take that as a compliment" you joke and Steve laughs, immediately quieting down as he realizes the child stirs in his arms from the action.

"It's a compliment babe, I love when you boss me around" he says with a smrik, a sly wink flashing in your direction and you blush because it had been a while. Towards the end of pregnancy you were too uncomfortable to even enjoy sleeping with your husband, and now after birth the doctors recommended you wait. You weren't sure if you could last, hell if even Steve could last.

"As long as you don't try to kill me with your easy going parental ways" you tell him and Steve gasps as if what you had just said hurt his feelings and you are quick to shake your head at him.

"Easy going, you’ve seen how I was with the kids growing up. Nothing easy going about me, in fact I yelled at them majority of the time" he is quick to remind you and moments between him and each of the teens that were now grown adults flash in your mind. Every protective moment shared between them.

"Fine, you can be the strict parent, I don't mind" you say with ease and he glares the minute he realizes the trap you had just put him in.

"Someone is feeling awfully evil for just having a child and being home for the first time in three days" Steve says and you laugh, leaning forward and pressing a soft and slow kiss to his lips. The furrow in his brow softens as he kisses you back, realizing just how badly he missed you during that short period of time. He planned to kiss you longer but suddenly the baby was softly crying, wriggling in his arms.

"Damn, she's probably hungry" you mutter, pulling back and prepared to take the baby into your arms. Steve watches how perfect you are with her already and smiles lightly. "I'm gonna feed her and then put her down for a nap. Why don't you turn on Rudolph and we can makeout on the couch like teenagers once I’m done"

"Yes ma'am" Steve salutes, immediately moving into motion at the request and you snort as he stands beside you and sets a hand on your baby’s head.

"Goodnight Laura" he coos softly before pressing a kiss to his daughters head. The daughter named after the very song on a Billy Joel album. When he suggested it, it only made sense, considering Billy was the very reason you two were together.

"Say goodnight to Daddy" you whispers and Steve smiles as he presses a kiss against your hair. He watches as you carefully climb the stairs and disappear with your child before settling on the fact he was right. His girls were both right where they should be.

There three reasons I think this is: 1) he doesn’t know why he wants to confess but he literally does not have time for his #2 to be having a moment rn. 2) he knows what Eurylochus did and is choosing to keep him quiet because he needs the crew not to dwell on this/he’s trying not to punch him in the face. 3) he knows what he did and he’s saying “stfu” as a way of forgiveness. All of these are great options imo

The Nine Muses

This is a very simple post about the Muses in hopes of explaining who they are, what their domains are, and some things they may be able to help with. This post isn't a deep dive by any means - just a simple introduction. Enjoy!

Who are the Muses?

The Muses, or Mousai, are goddesses of inspiration for various creative, scientific, and poetic endeavors. They were believed to also have knowledge of all things that have come to pass, remembering events with clarity that mortals could not hope to have. Their names are Kalliope, Kleio, Ourania, Thaleia, Melpomene, Polymnia, Erato, Euterpe, and Terpsikhore.

In total, there are nine Muses. The god Apollon was often believed to be the leader of the Muses, having a very close connection with them. The goddess Artemis was also paired with them.

Their origin and family varied depending on the source, but the most common notion was that Zeus and Mnemosyne are their parents and that they were born at the foot of Mount Olympus. Some other possible parents are Ouranos and Gaia, Zeus and Plousia, Pieros and Antiope, or even Apollon.

Poets of the past used to invoke the names of the Muses in hopes of gaining inspiration and the ability to gracefully convey their words. When a connection was drawn between them and Apollo, they were also known for their prophetic abilities as well, even being said to teach the art of prophecy.

What are each of their domains?

Kalliope - The eldest of the Muses, she is the goddess of eloquence and epic poetry. She is often considered the mother of Orpheus. She was depicted with a tablet, a scroll, or (later on) a lyre. Her name has been translated to mean "beautiful-voiced".

Kleio - Wise and intelligent, she is named the goddess of history. In art, she was often depicted with an open scroll or chest full of books. Her name was translated as "to make famous".

Ourania - Associated with the stars, she is the goddess of astronomy and astronomical writings. She has been depicted pointing at a celestial globe with a rod, but I wasn't able to find more information on her symbols. Her name means "heavenly one".

Thaleia - A goddess that helps bring joy to the world, she is the goddess of comedy and bucolic poetry. She was also considered to be the mother of the Korybantes (a group of seven demigods). She was often depicted with a comedy mask, a shepherd's staff, or a wreath of ivy. Her name has been translated as "festivity" or "blooming".

Melpomene - Holding a domain more somber than the Muse above, she is the goddess of tragedy. She was named the mother of the Sirens by Apollodorus. She was depicted with a tragedy mask, a sword, a wreath of ivy, or cothurnus boots. Her name likely means "to celebrate with song (and dance)".

Polymnia - With a name meaning "many hymns" or "many praises", it's no surprise that she's the goddess of religious hymns. She was often portrayed in a meditative pose.

Erato - A Muse that needs no introduction, she is the goddess of erotic poetry and mime. She was often portrayed with a lyre. Her name means "lovely" or "beloved".

Euterpe - Likely full of rhymes and reasons, she is the goddess of lyric poetry. She was often depicted with a double flute. Her name likely means "well pleasing" or "giver of much delight".

Terpsikhore - Filled with music, she is the goddess of choral song and dancing. She was often depicted with a lyre and plectrum. Her name has been translated to "delighting in dance".

Kalliope - Speaking presentations, writing essays, script reading, reading/writing informational posts/articles/etc., interpreting poetry, poetry writing/reading, sharing your own poetry, communicating clearly with others, important conversations, coping with conflicts, addressing conflicts, making peace with others.

What are some things they can help with specifically?

***These are merely suggestions.***

Kleio - History exams/tests, studying classics/history, delving into your own history, discovering family history, recalling past events, writing myth retellings or similar, identifying patterns of behavior, releasing the past, learning from the past, finding hope for the future.

Ourania - Studying the stars/space, story-telling, understanding the universe around us, memorizing constellations, finding peace in the night, finding hope in the darkness, creating goals for yourself, "reaching for the stars", holding onto your wishes, finding a sense of direction.

Thaleia - Creating your own joy, finding what makes you happy, performing stand-up comedy, writing any form of comedy, play-writing, healthy positivity, learning to laugh things off, releasing stress/burdens, moving forward, expressing your joy.

Melpomene - Coping with hardships, moving through difficult times, releasing the past, forgiving oneself, coping with past mistakes/regret, healing from difficult events, coping with the "downs" of life, play-writing, telling tragic tales, addressing difficult topics sensitively.

Polymnia - Writing devotional poetry/hymns/songs/etc., growing closer with religion/devotion, inspiration for offerings/devotional acts, coping with religious difficulties, finding comfort/joy in religion, connecting with the divine, religious/spiritual writings, connecting with your practice.

Erato - Love letters, confessing your feelings through writings/songs/etc., connecting with sexuality, writing/reading erotic stories, communicating sexual needs, establishing/discovering sexual boundaries, sex positivity (especially through literature), embracing your sexual interests.

Euterpe - Writing poetry, interpreting poetry, communicating one's emotions, romanticizing life, sharing poetry with others, devotional poetry, expressing one's feelings through writing, processing emotions, finding the "right word" for a piece you're writing.

Terpsikhore - Song-writing, learning to dance, expressing yourself through dance/song, connecting with music, processing feelings with musical aid, instrument playing, choral/instrumental performances, writing a musical, musical theater, finding your voice, embracing who you are, expressing yourself.

I'd like this to be male oriented please!

authors note: some romantic, some not... but i recently got back into my tf2 phase so please excuse if I'm a bit rusty (especially with soldier's, I'm still learning how to write him)... hope you enjoy it!

disclaimer: as someone who hc's pyro as aroace, i will be making their's platonic... i hope this is alright! but if you were especially looking forward to pyro's, i can make an edit or two to fix that for ya.

scout:

personally, i see scout being a very physical lover. (nothing sexual, just light touches, holding your hand, leaning against you, etc.)

so, when he found out you were sensitive to his touch, he LOVED it.

he especially loves how much of a reaction it gets out of you, really.

whenever you're on the battlefield, he'll most definitely run past you (only if you're in the safe) and graze your lower back.

one time he even started to backpedal as soon as he did so, all to just see your reaction... he loves it!

...

a personal favorite headcanon of mine is that he's an ass tapper...

i don't make the rules, sorry.

soldier:

not a very huge physical touch guy, i'll be honest.

in the romantic aspect of it, anyway.

he shows his affection through acts of service!

but he's pretty big into roughhousing/wrestling!

once you two, and a few other mercs, were participating in a good ol' arm wrestling contest

so far, heavy has won (quite obviously)... but he was voted out pretty fast since it was mad unfair (we love you tho, sorry heavy)

but, the person who was winning so far was soldier... and scout had failed miserably against him for the 20th time

"that's dumb! i won fair and square! he just cheated, did ja' see that?!"

scout went flexing for a good 2 minutes before it came up to you

soldier saw you approach and he had the DUMMBBESSSTT SMILE ON HIS FACE

his heart melts to honey whenever he sees you I swear

but anyway

it was your turn and you had quite a determined expression on your face

you were hand-in-hand and the other mercs were shouting for either one of you

while the mix of chorals of cheers were sung in the room, you had mustered just about all your strength to slam his fist into the table

...

get the man a cold rag he's burning up

GOD HES SO IN LOVE WITH YOU

YOU JUST DEFEATED HIM IN AN ARM WRESTLING FIGHT

HE LOVES YOU SO MUCH

but once you two pulled away, soldier grazed just below your inner palm; your wrist where it bends.

all of a sudden, all noise started to fade out

your face was BEET red and your hand was massaging your wrist

soldier started to notice the state you were in just after he picked you up and started cheering: "THAT'S MY BOYFRIEND!!!!" so proud

but when he noticed you, he was asking what was wrong... but you just shrugged it away and tried to hide your face

. . .

tbh, he didn't quite understand what got you so blushy that day... and it was sticking with him the entire week

when he asked you why you were, you explained it to him... and he very bluntly asked if he could keep touching you like that (ONLY IF YOU LIKED IT! if you don't, he made it his sworn duty to give you your space!!)

if you agreed and said it was alright, he'd find ways to just hold ya :)

he loves you so much I'm gonna explode

pyro:

again, to me, pyro is aroace! meaning, i don't see pyro being in a romantic nor sexual relationship with anyone.

but they LOVE physical touch

they love hugs, leaning against you, or just holding your hand

but when you two were on the field, on a particularly hot day, there was a fly claimed on your neck.

their immediate thought is to help! so, with those big gloves of theirs, they graze your neck to successfully drive the pest away! woohoo!!! but also... why were you so flushed?

"mmph, mphhr, mphr!?" worried they might've done something wrong, they asked what was the matter/if you were okay.

understanding the tone in their voice, you waved your hand in a 'don't worry about it' manner... but you ended up explaining your sensitivities.

pyro understood!

and whether you like physical touch or not, pyro holds your hand/tries their best to keep their distance the best they can

(and if you don't like it, sometimes engineer has to remind pyro (they forget sometimes)... but they mean so well!!!!!!)

demo:

TOUCHY

SO TOUCHY (especially when he's drunk)

loves your flushed face whenever he grazes your hips (hip/thigh lover, can't tell me otherwise)... he gets absolutely drunk off your reaction

referencing back to him being a complete thigh lover, I'm not even joking, he could drown in your thighs

if y'all ever get intimate: kisses. every. where.

so he's always touching you whenever he can

demo always has a hand on your hips somehow... whether it's him absolutely plastered and holding you from behind, rubbing your waist, or any way he can get his hands on you... he's there.

but, when demo is sober, he's more lovey than passionate (lol)

he's either rubbing your back or has his hand on your thigh

if anything, it's more of a comfort to him to always be holding you somehow

heavy:

tbh, heavy grazed your hip on accident

not even joking, he passed right by you (and since the man is a literal giant) the knuckle of his hand grazed you

you let out a gasp, making the man turn to you with a raised eyebrow

he questioned why you were so flustered... he apologized right? did he hurt you?

since he's so big, he worries if he'll hurt you (especially if you're hugging or shaking hands (platonic or not))... so he's always aware of his strength

when you explain to him that you have places where you’re particularly sensitive… he understood

engineer:

ohhh yeah, now we're getting to my favorite merc MUWHAHWAHHA

but anyway

engineer is a very polite man! southern hospitality all the way.

one time you were in a pretty deep conversation with pyro, listening closely and intently to every word they spoke

but you were also in the way of the hallway... engineer swiftly laid a hand on your back, whispering a small: "'Scuse me, honey bee..." before slipping past the two of you

FACE. HOT RED.

didn't notice it AT ALL

bro just kept on walking

he didn't think ANYYYTHING of it

he was just tryna pass by his boyfriend... nothing much right?

but engie kept on doing it! whenever he had to slip past you or silently greet you, he'd rest a hand on your lower back or graze your shoulder with his palm

...but he did notice it the dozenth time.

engineer noticed the way your eyes darting elsewhere, the flushed cheeks and your biting your lip... it was obvious you were very sensitive to his touch

and if you didn't show him you disliked it otherwise (and if you did, he'd most definitely stop doing it without your permission or desire to) he'd keep finding ways to touch you

he'd act all smooth about it too, like he didn't do anything

"What's the matter, darlin'? ... dunno what you're talkin' about."

LIKE OKAAAYYYY WE GET ITTT

but if you confronted him he'd prob smother you in kisses

he loves you so much he's gonna evaporate

medic:

y'all had a scheduled check-up

every merc does

and it was your turn in line

it was simple! check your heart, your reflexes... the gist... but you had something buggering with your back

it had ached horribly since your last battle on the field the previous day

apparently, the respawn machine bugged and didn't get rid of the bruise on your back from the enemy spy

of course, the wound was healed... just not so much the pain.

so medic checked it out!

"Ah, I see... can I see your back, junge?"

once you lifted the back of your shirt, medic gently placed two hands on the lower sides of you

asked if he could see if there was anything physically upsetting in the muscle... but when his cold hands grazed your skin, you jolted away

medic was wide-eyed and pulled his hands back before cracking into a smirk

"Cold, Liebe?"

extra tender when he checks up on you

but in other cases, he'd probably keep his hands to himself - i'd imagine he's not very physical in other scenarios

sniper:

sniper likes his space... we all know this

the guy is a loner! of course he's touch starved and touch puts him into overdrive!

but when you guys started dating, he eased more into the whole physical touch aspect of it

small things like shoulder-to-shoulder, hand-in-hand, all that goodness... but he decided to take a small leap

you two were sitting in the rec room... he was laid back in his seat with you beside and separate from his chair.

his hand snaked up your back and started to caress the back of your neck

The Kuzuruyu Choir ~~

Anyone notice something about these characters?? Spoilers ahead so proceed at your own risk.

They all unfortunately die and have K names!

When @beehiveofblorbos introduced me to V3, I had already started interacting/searching DR stuff on another social media platform and had run into a lot of spoilers about the V3 cast (guys, I’m sorry I couldn’t help it). Some of these spoilers were incorrect like Rantaro being the first chapter blackaned, Angie/Miu 3rd chapter blackaned, Kaede 5th chapter victim, but some were correct. Every time I ran into these spoilers relating to someone with the K name, I decided to “Kuzuryu” it. Well, I already love Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu, I’ll just pretend that all the K named characters are just Kuzuryus. After learning about them more, we decided to call them..

* Pianist Kuzuryu

* Maid Kuzuryu

* Anthropologist Kuzuryu

* Supreme Leader Kuzuryu

* Astronaut Kuzuryu

* Robot Kuzuryu

After some time, the joke evolved into me rooting for as many of the Kuzuruyus to survive. Unbeknownst to me at that time, none of them would survive. But alas, the Kuzuryus would live on in our hearts.

Since I love choral singing, making them all part of a choir was a no-brainer. They are also a band imo (I need to make so much fanart of them)..

Anyway, I love this entire cast so much, but the Kuzuryu Choir will always hold a special place in my heart.

Btw, Tsumugi Shirogane is the conductor of the choir (not pictured). I was so upset with the possibility of her being killed by Rantaro in the first chapter, we decided to memorialize her as the conductor.

YKL vol.#20～Japanese Seal 20th Special～ Kanagawa Performance Broadcast

2024.06.09 Kanagawa・Kenmin Hall The second concert of this year's Yuki Kajiura live tour was broadcast last night on TBS Channel 1. The tour is titled “Special Japanese Seal” referring to the fact that no Japanese songs are performed. This exclusion does not apply to the encore section. User 蓝原延珠_ on Bilibili kindly provided their recording of the broadcast, you can watch it HERE. I was only able to download a 720p version (~1GB) of it but for the time being, it will do. I am eager to watch it and write a little report. Hopefully an HQ version will pop up in a few days. Without further ado, let's get going〈(•ˇ‿ˇ•)-→

overture〜アンチヒーロー〜Main Theme〜: Right off the bat, I'm noticing that the audio is quite dull and maybe even slightly tinny? Might be the specific recording but it's probably more a matter of the TV broadcasts generally having bad audio. That was clearly noticeable when you compared the Kaji Fes TV broadcast to the BD release. Anyway, we are off to a great start. Glad to see rito and Lino on stage from the get-go and not just for a couple of songs here and there. It always feels a bit awkward for them to have the status of "regular" members but only appearing on stage sporadically. I haven't listened to any songs from the Antihero soundtrack so this is all new to me. Classic YK, the type of song I will always gravitate towards. Beautiful harmonies. Enjoying the slight whine in Eri's voice, so emotional. Love when the epic part starts and you can hear an entire chorus in the background (maybe a bit too much studio magic going on here but I don't mind for grand sections like that). Must have been a real goosebumps moment at the live.

the four rings: Wow, this one is so good. Don't think I've heard it before. Not too familiar with the Heaven’s Feel OST tbh. Really getting goosebumps now. Although I will say that here, the post-editing is a bit overbearing, it seems to almost drown out the vocals of our songstresses. Don't get me wrong, it still sounds amazing and I am enjoying the hell out of it but I wonder how it was like at the venue (with presumably less studio magic). With six singers on stage, they can certainly achieve some powerful choral work but of course it would still pale in comparison to a larger choir. Nonetheless, this is an instant favourite. Hope they will perform it during the Asia tour leg. Although I kinda doubt it since they said that the setlist would be very different. But who knows, it's Fate/stay night so it's probably among the more-likely pieces to be performed among Yuki's huge repertoire. My guess is that they will stick to the most popular anime stuff because they know that will get the audience excited.

absolute configuration: Perfect transition. Never getting tired of this song. And I'm glad we are back to a more natural sound with less studio magic. Solid performance as always.

E.G.O: Have they ever performed this live for a home video release? I don't think so. It was included in one of the live complication albums (Fictionjunction 2010-2013) but I don't recall ever watching a live performance. I have to admit that I haven't even listened to the live audio track, must have dismissed it when I first got the album. I can understand why because it's not really my type of song. It's not bad but not my favourite either. Very old-school YK so that's fun. And there are a couple of nice Keiko parts, that's always a treat.

キッチン革命〜Main Theme〜: A completely new track from one of Yuki's most recent works. Definitely a perfect fit for a show called "Kitchen Revolution" XD Especially the percussion at the beginning. The harmony between Yuriko, Lino and rito works really well, they sound good together. Other than that, it probably won't become one of my favourite songs. Generally not a huge fan of Yuriko as main vocalist. No one does those gorgeous operatic higher harmonies like her but when the spotlight is on her, it's typically not my cup of tea.

voyagers: As far as I know, we only have the studio version and live audio from the compilation album as reference. No official live footage. The song has never really stuck out to me, it is okay but it's a bit too derivative of much better tracks from Yuki. Will keep it short so I don't trigger anyone. But it's definitely one of those songs where I prefer the version with Wakana. Joelle's vocals don't do anything for me here. But since I am not super invested in the song anyway, I can't say I care much.

Historia: opening theme: Beautiful rendition. Love that they brought all six vocalists back on stage for this. Naturally, I'm quite fond of Wakana's version once again (not least of all because this song will always have a connection to Kalafina) but Yuriko does a fanstatic job of singing her parts, admittedly, she has much better control so her voice sounds very crisp and lovely. Joelle provides great support here and their voices blend well together.

forest: Never been a fan. I didn’t like it when Wakana sang it and I don’t like it now that Joelle sings it. It’s not a bad song at all and Joelle sounds fine to me but it’s just not my cup of tea. Next.

My long forgotten cloistered sleep: Now THIS on the other hand I have always loved. I still remember everyone hating Wakana's live version during YKL Vol.#9 but I enjoy it quite a lot. It's true that it's probably not the best she has ever sounded but her vocals here certainly don't warrant all the nasty comments she has received throughout the years for that performance. Of course, I am also obsessed with that WaKei combo!! And you know me, I have a weakness for "lalala"s so this has definitely always been among my favourite YKL songs. As for this performance, I think both Wakana and Joelle are trying are little too hard to emulate Emily Bindiger's timbre. I personally don't think Emily Bindiger has a particularly nice voice so if anyone tries to sound like her, it's always a slight downgrade in my opinion. I'll just say this, if you are one of the people who say that Wakana sounds like a chipmunk in her version, you'll have to say the same thing about Joelle(¬_¬) Long story short, I don't mind this version with Joelle and Keiko. Still very enjoyable. Will definitely be listening to it on repeat.

I swear: Probably one of my least favourite Keiko songs but this is a decent performance. I might even like this more than some of the previous live rendition since it's a bit more delicate(?) I think.

fiction: Another song I could live without…The chorus is solid but it's not one of those songs I'd ever actively listen to.

I reach for the sun: Forever sad that they made Joelle the lead of this song. Keiko does a better job in my opinion and I like the song quite a bit more than "I swear". Overall, the English section has probably been the weakest so far, at least for me. I actually ended up fast-forwarding through most of it.

MC: This MC is quite interesting since Yuki asks her singers to share a story of something they are taking a break from right now. To explain the background of this question, it's a reference to the title of this year's tour: Nihongo Fuin = Japanese Seal ("fuin" basically means to seal up something. You are excluding it/taking a break from it/quitting it/etc). Lino says that despite being a huge lover of the sea, she has been taking a break from going to the beach and swimming in the sea during this summer because it might affect her voice negatively. Yuki has a funny response to that because she says that most of her songs have never really had a summer vibe and actually don't work very well in a summer atmosphere but for some reason, they have ended up always holding their annual tour during the summer time. Keiko has stopped drinking her beloved lattes for the past three months to prioritise her water intake. Gladly, she has overcome the worst parts of quitting already and is getting used to water. Yuki admired her stoic nature. Yuriko would typically refrain from certain things in preparation for a live tour but this year she has completely forgotten about that. About two weeks ago, she decided to quit ice-cream but she only did it half-hardheartedly because it was so hot that she ended up eating it anyway. So yeah, this is a big fail and it's really a "story of NOT taking a break from something" XD Joelle has stopped waking up early. Usually, she is the type to rise together with the sun but in order to increase her sleeping hours, she will wake up later when she is on tour. A restful sleep will help her body heal up and improve her voice. rito has quit chewing gum (and stopped eating certain chewy foods such as squid) because it's bad for your jaw and facial muscles. Kaori has taken a break from watching the drama "Anithero" (for which YK is composing music, the main theme having been performed as the intro of this live). Seems like the song is haunting her a bit too much and the story is getting to her. So once the tour is over and she is no longer singing the song, she will have an easier time watching the episodes. Yuki agrees that the main theme is quite haunting. Especially when she hears one of the singers rehearsing in the dressing-room right before a performance. Eri doesn't really have anything to tell the audience but she and Yuki briefly talk about the difficulties of learning so many songs with coined words.

Gaia: Wow, what a lovely song. Instant like. Really adore Eri here!! Such gorgeous high notes.

Credens justitiam: What a great team-up with Keiko, Eri, Yuriko and Joelle. Eri sounds great together here with Keiko. Does Yuriko sound a bit off here? I don't know. Not 100% into some of her parts.

hepatica: First time actively listening to this song. Very beautiful and tender. I feel like some of Yuki's KnK work might have been inspired by this song. Some parts immediately made me think of "Seventh Heaven".

godsibb: Waaah! Yes!! Always a joy to listen to this song. Glad everyone is on stage for a powerful finale.

Alone: I knew I would love this Pandora Hearts medley. I always do and this one is no exception. Flawless start.

Bloody rabbit: Some squeaky parts at the beginning but overall, solid.

Contractor: OBSESSED. One word. Perfection. There's a reason this is the performance I'm using for this post. I'm forever a slave to Keiko's solo part XD. Also, Eri is such a queen here! So cool!

zodiacal sign: This is the song where you can really tell that they are taking great care of Kaori's condition. No strenuous movements at all. How funny is it to see Rie joining the girls in their little dance?! Cute!! Super fun performance as always.

open your heart: Ughh, I do not like this song at all. They did "Sweet Song"/"paradise regained" for most of the other performances. Would have killed to get either of those two instead of "open your heart". Obviously, "Sweet Song" would have been perfect. From what I heard, the final concert with Kaori in July had an amazing and heart-warming performance of "Sweet Song".

En.Prologue〜このとほかやわらかい: Wish I could grow to love this song. It deserves my love, I know it. But I just can't get into it. But hey, it's a cool performance, I can't deny that. During her solos, Kaori sounds a bit nasal in my opinion. Nothing that takes away from the performance but it's certainly noticeable (throughout the live to be honest - at least during the few songs where she has a substantial solo part. I think you can also hear it during the main MC. Either she had a minor cold that day or it's just a symptom of her pregnancy. Lowered nasal resonance is actually a very common thing for pregnant women.)

En.Parade: Beautiful. No notes.

En.蒼穹のファンファーレ: Solid. Not a huge fan of the song though.

My track by track first impressions for Unreal Unearth (with some contextualized thoughts of the singles)

De Selby Part 1 - straight into the lullabies playlist. Just perfect.

De Selby Part 2 - perfect fade in from Part 1. I couldn't have dreamt up a better, more subtle transition. Still my current creature comfort.

First Time - oh, ffs, it's bluesy and sad. Lethal combination. This might be another one on repeat later. Ow. Ouch, ow. THE FINAL TIME YOU CALLED ME "BABY". Wtf. I see why some of y'all were cussing him out on here.

Francesca - my beloved. Brutal to have this follow First Time, though. Mentally two-stepping through the tears. The bellowing at the outro still has the power to ascend me despite my replaying.

I,Carrion - another certified heartbreaker for the lullabies playlist. She's Greek, she's cosmic, she's pure love.

Eat Your Young - I am once again solidified in my conviction to refuse having children in this fucked up world. Y'all be safe.

Damage Gets Done (feat. Brandi Carlile) - Okay guitar lick! Oh the voices belting together in harmony is hitting me. I'm getting really 2010s feelings I haven't felt in forever. I feel the sudden urge to forgive myself. He's back at it again with the choral work, CAN I LIVE??

Who We Are - and just like that, I'm back on my emo shit. He really went for emotional whiplash in terms of song ordering, huh? Not me literally listening to this while engulfed in a dark room as well. Another one I'll have to repeat, I fear.

Son of Nyx - oh fuck. Oh no. Not the piano dragging along. And no words. THE CUTOFF. THE STRINGS. THE VOCALIZATIONS. It's definitely a warning. Shit's about to start hurting for real. It's so haunting and gorgeous.

All Things End - Hello, old friend, my first favorite. I'm terrified of what follows you. It was bad enough watching the man "die" on the table (my hands are in the air to receive the gospel).

To Someone From A Warm Climate (Uiscefhuarithe) - fucking hell. Just devastating. Idk how much more I can take.

Butchered Tongue - this hits like crazy if you have any connection to a diaspora that was nearly erased or just have ancestry DEEPLY rooted oppression and the like. Ffs, I'm gonna need stitches for a cut that deep.

Anything But - and then this happy shit. Back at it again with the whiplash, the bastard. I love it though! This is going on the light and bright playlist. I'm a sucker for sad lyrics dressed in bright colors. And the vocals?? Come on, now.

Abstract (Psychopomp) - I was right. Everything following Son of Nyx just hurts differently. Dare I say worse than the first half of the album. I really shouldn't get into how I relate OFTEN to the poor roadkill creatures in my area.

Unknown/Nth - a nice and plentiful helping of stake through the heart, as usual. The briiidge. I drown in it every time.

First Light - I'm gonna say it's an instant classic. The imagery. The love on love on love. The catharsis. The drumsss. Oh! The acoustic fade out.

Overall, he didn't bother not once to lift his heel on this album. He's outdone himself. No skips. I am foaming at the mouth, waiting for my vinyl to come in. All get 10s across the board from me. 16 works of art. I really wish I could lock myself in a room for three days to really digest this album.
