"Not again-!" Light groaned, trying to close his eyes as the red beam appeared, in a useless attempt to stop whatever the anon meant, but the damage was already done.

Instantaneously, any single thought that didn't contain L (there weren't many, to begin with) disappeared from Light's mind. Every memory with L went to the forefront of his mind, especially the few where there skin had brushed together, on purpose or not.

Immediately one thought consumed Light, he had to be next to L, he had to feel L against every small sample of skin he had, to dig into L's skin and live inside his carcass if that meant L wouldn't leave him.

Light opened the door to the hotel room L had been staying in, he'd been called over by L for a meeting with the rest of the team, but Light couldn't care less about the meeting. He strode in the room, not even caring to close the door behind him.

The sound of Soichiro, his father, concernedly questioning what he was doing didn't reach Light's ear, or more like he didn't care to understand what the older man had said, his eyes zeroed in on L's bedroom, where he had to be, since he wasn't in the living area yet.

Light opened the door without knocking, shutting it behind him since he faintly could remember how embarrassing it'd be to do this in front of his father, and the other agents.

He made a small huff as he noticed L was sitting down, reading some report on the laptop, or had been til Light rudely interrupted. Light didn't care, just caring that L's attention wasn't on him. L should care about him, him, him! He was Kira, L should be throwing himself at him!

Light crawled onto the bed, before draping himself across L's lap, completely uncaring as the computer keys clicked and spammed letters into the search bar under him, only letting out a small sigh of relaxation as he finally could feel L's body against his own slightly.

But Light wanted, no, needed more. But for now, this was okay, he supposed... for now.

Hello! Yes, it will be continued! Things have not gone as planned on my end, but I do still intend to get the next part out by the end of the year or early January at the latest. you hummed along to the tune, layers of blankets protecting you from the cold. you slurped the instant ramen from the bowl and hoped it'd help with your fever.

"you're still sick?" light finally spoke from behind the couch. you slightly flinched at his sudden but expected appearance. you slowly turned to look at him clearly.

"m'not sick." you denied as you shook your head. light cocked his head to the side, "you're not sick?" he repeated in disbelief, he should've expected your stubbornness.

when you nodded your head he couldn't help but chuckle, "you're ridiculous." he said before walking into the kitchen.

your eyes followed his steps as he made his way back from the recently popular destination, the vile medicine cabinet with substances that make everything taste like bitter garbage.

"no." you said making him abruptly stop in front of you, a glass of water and tablets in either hand. he was staring at you, probably planning some wretched scheme to make you take the medicine― he leaned in and kissed your forehead.

"what the fuck are yo-"

"i'm just checking your temperature. you're still sick." he commented, weirdly nonchalant. "will you take the medicine or do you want me to reenact another trope?" he asked, a twinkle of amusement in his eyes.

you begrudgingly agreed as much as you wanted to not take it, another gesture from this man will make you even more lovesick that no medicine could cure you.

You seem like you know a lot about DN so I want to ask: what do you think is the deal with Yotsuba Light? I read the manga two times and it always seemed to me like Ohba suddenly started writing a different character in this ark compared to what we seen in beginning

My friend wrote a really long essay about it that I recommend if you're the type who likes reading really long character essays - but if you don't want to go through 25k words, I cannot blame you, so here's the cliffnotes version of what's happening:

Light isn't just returning to who he was in the beginning.

Light doesn't just wake up and nothing has happened - the past months very much did occur and he does remember them. His memories have just been edited so that he cannot remember being Kira. This means that this Light is under the assumption that he's been investigated for murders he didn't commit and then turned himself in over them in what he can't rationalize as anything but a temporary lapse of judgement caused by the pressure getting to him.

And now he's here. In confinement. Innocent (as far as he's aware).

At the start of Death Note, normal boy Light Yagami has his life uprooted by becoming a murderer.

At the start of the Yotsuba Arc, self-believed normal boy Light Yagami has his life uprooted by being falsely accused of murder.

In both cases, the perfect life that Light has been living up until now is completely turned on its head. Light is imprisoned, indefinitely. If he ever gets out (and that is an if to him at this point), he'll be behind in college. His mother and sister think he eloped with a girl he doesn't even like and started ghosting them over it.

His career plans and social life are both in shambles, and the very real threat of being under L's watch for life (or worse, executed) is hanging over his head.

Just like Kira!Light, this is a Light who has everything to lose.

And thus, he does his absolute best to be on best behavior. Every bit of virtuousness is on full display both for the benefit of L, who needs to declare him innocent, and his father, who is his big idol and whom he's properly working with for the first time ever.

Light's boredom and jadedness from pre-canon don't come through because he really really is not bored while he's scrambling to save his own life from a crime he does not think he committed. He's stressed, and he has a lot to prove.

Light at the beginning of the story thinks his life is guaranteed to go as planned, and he'll have a predictable existence forever. Yotsuba!Light has learned the hard way that this is not true - forces beyond his control can completely destroy everything he believed to be true and even lead his father to hold a gun to his head. He's got a sense of direction in a way pre-canon Light never had, even if he obtained it by way of traumatic experiences.

Regarding the conclusion that Light comes to after rationalizing his wrongs & accepting the death note, I have split trains of thought.

We know that Light sees the law enforcement system is morally good. But does he believe the system is good and it works, or does he believe the system is good but doesn't work?

Does he see himself as its necessary external defender, an entity that must be free from its confines, to prune off the bad branches of society that threaten it? Or does he see himself as a replacement for the system entirely, rendering it null and outdated?

I guess what I'm asking is, how self-aware is Light in realizing that, by believing that his actions are an improvement upon society, he implies that he doesn't have faith in the current system?
