In my Skitarii fanfiction RPG I had thalaxius/former Pretorian who was mysteriously brain-fried in ship-breaking conflict.
They weren't sentient or responsive, with only communication being broadcasting painful memories/nightmares during sleep. (players decided that the sound of their PTSD were actually active units conveging on them)
Their techpriest was obsessed on fixing them. Players, not asking why specifically, joined on obsession.
(quest was about letting this unit die, or maybe asking priest why they cared so hard, but it was obv that Skitarii are precious little meow meows and we don't let them die, even if it's way past their time! )

If Inquisitor Lavellan is Hope, Elf!Rook is Freedom
Forgive my rambling but I just wanted to share this, see if it inspires discussion/theories/new friends to reach out, and maybe cement myself in this fandom.
SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
I've given a sparing thought to some theories and headcanons I've seen circulating with the confirmation of elves once being spirits in Veilguard and all the clues sprinkled throughout Inquisition. One has popped up that I find intriguing and I agree with. Inquisitor Lavellan is a Spirit of Hope.
I think there is a very strong case for that, especially for those Solasmancers out there who love to pair them up as Wisdom and Hope. It's a very beautiful thought as they are without a doubt soulmates, at least in the cases where those two end up together.
Hope defines the Inquisitor's journey. They become the Herald of Andraste, a symbol to look to after a period of ruthless war, then into the ass-end of a demon apocalypse trying to mend a broken world. Deed after great deed they prove their capabilities, and become a formidable player in Thedas's history, keeping people looking up. They are the Dawn That Comes.
Now that Veilguard has since confirmed that Elves were spirits made flesh, I've started to wonder at what possible spirit Rook could be, should they be of Elven lineage. I've decided, either through evidence or delusion or trying to piece together the fanfic I've got brewing, that Rook could be a spirit of Freedom.
Every faction could have some way of a purpose toward liberation. A Veil Jumper would want to free their history and their people from ignorance. A Grey Warden would want to free Thedas from the Calling and the Blight. The strongest background, and most the likely canon faction for Rook would be a Shadow Dragon, putting pressure on the Imperium to abolish slavery.
Rook has a knack for freedom. We free Lucanis from the Ossuary, the Dalish Elves from the Venatori, the Kal Sharok dwarves from the Titan's anger, young griffons from the Gloomhowler. We even free ourselves from a prison of regret built specifically to lock up gods.
My first go round, I played a Lord of Fortune Spellsword, and it coincided very nicely with this theory. An ex-galley slave turned marauding treasure hunter with no masters to hold them back. She lived and breathed freedom so it made sense, at least for my Rook.
We also see the potential to corrupt that spirit of freedom. Into what you ask? CHAOS. Which also ties into the other thing that connects them to Solas; The Tower.
The big teaser for Rook as the protagonist back when it was still called Dreadwolf was the Tower/rook chess piece and floating head of a wolf. Solas's Arcana at the end of Inquisition is the Tower. This Major Arcana represents calamity, disruption, upheaval, unavoidable change, chaos.
Too much freedom leads to lawlessness, and Rook is never one to follow rules as far as we witness. In all backgrounds, no matter the faction, Rook's actions cause unrest, turmoil, disruption, often a total breakdown of authority, much like the spirit they are mistaken for when delving into Solas's memories in the Crossroads.
Rook cannot be caged or told what to do. But also, Freedom cannot go unchecked, to do so on either end of the spectrum just leads to untold mayhem. It needs a guiding hand. It needs Wisdom.
With this in mind, it just makes their dynamic with Solas so much more fascinating. Everything he has done is in the name of Freedom, and if he were to have a living embodiment of it move against him it would be so confronting. It would make him question his entire angle. Why is he really doing this, if not for freedom? But his pride would keep him in imprisoned in denial and regret. This denial is then reflected back to Rook in regards to the fate of Varric.
The case for each spirit, both Hope and Freedom, only intensifies if one chooses the Atonement ending.
Lavellan sees the Wisdom in Solas and tries to appeal to him through that. She gives him Hope, and joins him in the dream, forever protected from his fear of dying alone.
Rook holds a mirror to his Pride, his mistakes, his trauma and makes him confront it. They gather all the pieces needed to unravel his fear, allow him to let go and make his own choice to atone and return to his true self, opening a path to true Freedom to finally come home to the Fade. WHICH IS TWIN-FLAMEY AS FUCK
So yeah, I love this game. EDIT: I've expanded on this with a second part regarding Elgar'nan and will in the future take a look at Rook/Freedom in relation to Mythal as Benevolence and Retribution.

As it's seen on the blog, there are a lot of philosophies and texts that go into my practice. It can be very confusing and taxing to understand it all, I get it! So, this post is my best attempt at making it easier for everyone regardless of how much experience you may have, I hope this helps! clipped wings
cashing out with his mech's ammo bins full of stolen empire payroll. running through a series of prearranged drop-offs and paid-off contacts, lightening the load as he puts as much as distance as he can with his former masters. at last, near empty-handed, he reaches the surgeon.
everything's getting changed anyway, but can the piloting implants go first? doesn't matter what they look like, they'll be recognised instantly with those. every damn component is itemised.
no, the surgeon tells them. it has to start with the chest, with the tits fucked up from binding to hide the effects of smuggled hormones.
can't the wrist docklets be removed? they're quick. no, the surgeon tells them. vitals are being monitored through them, and the neovagina comes next, and it needs time to boot and have it connections checked.
not even the kill count on their neck? that's not an implant, it's a mark of-- no, the surgeon says. it's superficial, and the anaesthetic is kicking in with half a jawline to carve off now.
the anaesthetic has to be local, because when at last the accursed neural link is removed and filled in, you need to keep tabs on if the patient still has a functioning brain. so when it's finally time for her to ask about that, she can't open her mouth to do it.
nor to scream when the armed killsquad walks in.
the surgeon just sits patiently as the squad's lead sits in a chair and rolls it up. the metal in her face -- and lack of an imperial bullet in the pilot's skull -- spell out 'extremist militia' before her lips can semantically specify 'liberation front'.
her hand reaches between the pilot's thighs and traces over her freshly synthesised cunt lips.
it is definitely fucking connected.
she twitches in the surgical seat, and feels the sting of the diagnostic tool the surgeon has perched in her skull. she wishes the anaesthetic would make it easier to stay till, but all it does is ruin her ability to control herself.
"not clipping those pretty wings, are you honey?" the rebel asks.
the pilot's face is red and swollen and numb and she only feels the tears when they slip into the stitches, wet as the rebel's fingers.
"hush hush," she continues, pushing inside, testing how many fingers blood money has bought the pilot capacity for. "i'll let you keep your toys, they suit you. but you've got a lot more things to pay off first if you don't want daddy imperium finding out about this new face of yours."
her other hand presses into the pilot's collar. their masks make a poor showing of hiding the way the other rebels shift uneasily.
but they don't bother to interrupt.
"now doctor, about her unpaid tab? happy to cover it, just need to cancel those removals and schedule a few... upgrades."

Mass Effect can't even be accurately described as "liberal" tbh since the intergalactic society it depicts isn't even remotely democratic even in liberal-bourgeoisie terms. It's literally a triumvirate (latter quadrumvirate) dictatorship that relies on a secret police with total supralegal autonomy and an explicitly fascist empire's (the turians) military for enforcement, which arbitrarily decides which species are "important" enough to be given diplomatic representation and has conducted at least two near-complete genocides in its history. The writing pretty much always lands on the side of "what the galaxy really needs is some tough, martial military/police types to cut through what little bureaucracy and political representation there is to Get Things Done." It's straight up Imperium of Man-levels of dystopian and the game doesn't even seem to comprehend it really. The most "liberal" thing about the games are their upholding of the insanely fucked up status quo as the "best" option for you go take.

would love to read a version of dune that's (a) from the fremen perspective (natch) but also (b) doesn't glorify the fremen as this noble victim civilization that gets taken in hand by iterative generations of colonial forces and religious brainwashing, but rather as its own civilization with complex plans for liberation that have ALSO been built up over thousands of years. like maybe you're several nations — a PLANET's worth — of tribalistic nomadic peoples, with significantly different cultures and traditions, who have over centuries and centuries finally aligned and coalesced into an alliance for military support, developed an intercontinental transport system (worms), acquired technology capable of fucking up galactic imperial siege weapons, AND you have the means to take down significant portions of the spice harvesting operation. BUT. you don't reveal to the colonists that you have it. because you only get one shot at this. once you lose the element of surprise, the empire is going to park its nukes in your front lawn and you're never gonna see liberation. so you have to take this thing in one go.
AND THEN suddenly the ruling colonial house of your planet gets deposed by one of its colonial rivals, and there's this skinny teenage warlord wandering around helplessly in the desert with his mom, and you take him in because (a) hey, you're not made of stone, you're not gonna just a kid bite it out there, but also (b) this kid is technically acknowledged as the "ruler" of your planet under imperial law, and he's incredibly politically valuable. and you've just not only saved his life, but effectively hold his only remaining family member as hostage. so THEN you give that family, his mother, a corruptive psychedelic that permanently rewires her by implanting psychological imprints of centuries of your religious figures into her mind, which like — I mean, she's technically a hivemind for your religion now? and that's his mom. and then he falls in love with someone from your culture and she becomes pregnant with his kid. which he's treating as his official heir. and you're telling me the fremen don't see an opportunity?
and like you could still do the messiah prophecy, thing, right, because surely, with that many fremen on the planet, some of them are going to believe he's the lisan al-gaib. a lot of them, probably. the cult's still huge. and THAT'S THE CLINCHER. from a fremen leader's perspective, this is a once-in-a-millennium opportunity to unite all the fremen tribes behind your banner — because you're the one who found this fucker, right, his mom is your priestess, he's grown up with you — and rally an army under the pretense of an Atreides restoration. and then once Paul actually gets on the throne, of Arrakis or the Empire or whatever, what's he going to do? give Arrakis back to the fremen! immediately! or he's going to die, and his children by Chani will take power, putting a fremen on the imperial throne. meaning that not only fremen, but stilgar's tribe in particular, will end up immensely powerful. because paul has institutional respect and ability to parlay with the great houses, making him the perfect vessel for fremen political ambitions. and you get to spend years sculpting him ideologically into someone who wants both your philosophy and your political ambitions.
only then he actually gets power, and suddenly: whoops! you created a kid who thinks he's a god. and he wants your civilization to expand over the whole imperium, spreading your philosophy and securing his political reign. and you're going: uh, that's fine, actually, we just wanted this one planet? but it's too late, because he thinks he's the messiah, because you told him he's the messiah, and a lot of people now agree with him. and so now the fremen, though ostensibly in political control of the imperium, have to deal with the problem of a child-emperor who thinks he's jesus, and thinks you're his apostles. figure that one out.
#greenteacup asks#i love dune btw i think it's great#i just think paul's possibly the most boring perspective for this story

TUMBLR, GET READY, I GOT A NEW XENO OC IDEA
Picture this: a young Ethereal T'au. His whole life he is trained to lead his species, to promote the ideology of the Greater Good. He is raised to be a paragon, a perfectionist. He is raised to be an icon. The young Aun takes his teachings to heart and tries his best to live up to his elders' expectations. It's hard and he is not always successful, but he tries. However, the Aun can't shake off the feeling that something is wrong with his life. He feels... unsatisfied. What is personal satisfaction, selfish desires, to the T'au? One should always look to the future, think of the next generation and work for the Greater Good of the Galaxy... Or this is what he is trying to tell himself.
One day, when he was staying on a planet that was claimed by the T'au forces from the Imperium of Man, he goes through their records, takes a closer look to mankind's history, in an attempt to understand them more.
Deep in the libraries, surrounded by the records that haven't been touched in T'au'va knows how long, he stumbles upon a collection of, what he asssumes are some sort of video recordings. After tinkering with the device, the T'au finally manages to play out the film. He looks at the cover, trying to see if it is written anywhere what the film is about. There are two languages written onto the disk. One is in the language he doesn't understand, probably an ancient human language now lost to time. But, there is a translation into the humans' current language. It reads:
"THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY"
The young Aun is mesmerized by the film. It's a piece of ancient human history, a look into how they used to live all those thousands and thousands of years ago. The way those human males dress, act, talk, fight... The T'au knows it's just a film, but it has to be based on their history, right? When the film is over, the T'au finds out that there are two more, featuring the same character, "The Man With No Name" as he was called. He watches them all. He finds more and more of similar films. He learns terms like "Bounty Hunter", "Cowboy", "Sheriff", "High Noon", "Wild West", "Texas", "Appaloosa", "New Mexico", "Kansas", "Colorado", "Gunfighter", "Ranch"... By the end of it, the young T'au's head is swimming. But in the good way. He is giddy and excited. The humans made a bad first impression on him, but now?
Now he wants to be like those... "Bounty hunters". Like those "Cowboys".
The Aun takes the films with him, every single Western film he could find. He watches them again and again and again, noticing the details he haven't noticed when watching for the first time. He watches those films until he knows them by heart. The T'au updates his wardrobe, now dressing... Not like an Ethereal should. He acts more relaxed around the other T'au as well, less like he is an enigmatic future figure of authority and more like... your neighbor. Like you are his good friend. And he acts like this with everyone, nott just the T'au, but the Auxiliaries as well! The Ethereals protest and tell him to cut it off. He, for the first time in his life, tells them off, says that as long as he is doing his goddamn job, who the hell cares HOW he does it?! Ain't no difference in how he promotes and spreads the Greater Good so long as he does it... and so long as he is actually helping the people.
The Aun knew he crossed the line. He feared the worst. So, using his natural ability to command the T'au of other castes... he escapes. Far, far away. To a planet with a large desert on its surface. There, he changes his name, changes his appearance, gets the means to protect himself. He finds an alien beast, tames it and it becomes his trusted steed. Lastly, the Aun abandons his birth name. It was too long and too "un-Cowboy" like anyway. So, he takes up the name "Eastwood" after the legendary actor of the Western films, the very man that started the T'au's... No, Eastwood's liberation.
He rides into the sunset, the beast under him fed and well-rested, as the two of them set off in search of those who need help the most. After all, what good Eastwood could've done wearing that damn tiring formal facade and those ceremonial robes? Better get off his arse and head out there, help the folks out there himself, with the big iron on his hip.
TLDR: Ethereal T'au doesn't want to be a well-intentioned manipulative dictator, but instead wants to be a cowboy after watching a lot of spaghetti western films, so he escapes to the "wild west" of the T'au Empire and proceeds to name himself after Clint Eastwood.

Rogue Trader Wynnrun, under the protection of the Red Beast, her planet's deity.
The people of Alemannis believe the red, fiery trail that follows the God-Emperor to be the fire of humanity's soul itself, manifested as a powerful beast that cuts through the skies, brings life and light to the planets and destruction to it's enemies. This faith has carried the people around House Alema to a planet that overflows with life, inhabiting Raptors which House Alema deemed as signs of the Beast. When the first rare sightings of the bright red feathered kind of said Raptors occured, the people of Alemannis rejoiced, for they believed that their home is inhabited by the manifestations of the Red Beast itself. Since then, House Alema and it's people, the Alemans, have tasked themselves to protect and care for their home and it's holy wildlife for many centuries to come. Spotting the rare signs of a Red Raptor, be it even just the smallest feather, is a sign of great fortune. As such having the chance to see one of these especially elusive creatures face to face is a sign of destiny.
And Wynnrun, who has seen them twice, is rumored to be destined for greatness, possibly sparking the liberation of Alemannis people from the increasingly rapacious and oppressive gaze of the Imperium.

🧠 Servitorization as punishment is saved for those only would provide a permanent and significant threat to the Server Mother and her protected worlds, however, many of those saved from worlds under siege choose to undergo the irreversible process voluntarily, giving up the comforts of flesh for the power of steel and circuity. Such individuals are still full citizens of Krasis, and are often sent back to their world of origin in hopes that they can liberate their families, loved ones, or even their entire planet from the rule of the Imperium. Very few ever come back...

EZRA "ROOK" MERCAR | SHADOW DRAGON | DUALIST
Ah, Ezra. He's my second Shadow Dragon, 36, and romances Neve. Finally got to doing a proper write up for him 😊
He’s bold, charismatic, and carries himself with confidence but with the warm approachability of an old friend. He has been a Shadow Dragon since their origin and is well established amongst the ranks. Out of all my Rooks, he is the most experienced and ready to face what all Rooks do. Which makes all his failures in Veilguard sting that much more. And what makes him extra special to me, is that he's the older brother of my main Rook, Blair Mercar. 🤗
Ramblings under the cut
Like other canon adhering Mercars, his origin was on a battlefield in Ventus as an infant where his adoptive father found him. He was raised by the Mercars who are a military family, and he too served in the military until he was 20 (so only for about two years). He realized that the Imperium was not a nation he wanted to support and left to find his own path. Before the formation of the Shadow Dragons, Ezra worked with smaller, rag-tag freedom fighter groups in Minrathous that freed slaves and fought against the burgeoning Venatori. It was then that he met Blair (my canon Mercar Rook).
Blair had already been liberated from the magister that owned her and she, amongst the others that were saved with her, needed help either fleeing Tevinter or finding a way to enter society. Ezra’s group received word from an individual that was on his own mission to free Tevinter's slaves (guess who😉) that a group he freed were in a settlement with him outside of the city. Ezra was sent to help them which is where he met Blair. The magister that owned Blair was using her for magic related experimentation which had left her traumatized. But they made an instant connection and Ezra became deeply invested in her. So much so that he petitioned his family to adopt her. And that’s what happened! Although Blair was already 17, Ezra was her guide and protector in her new freedom, teaching her about the world and standing up for her until she could do it on her own. It was only a couple years after Blair was freed that she began joining Ezra on his missions and assignments. Their unique skill sets built off each other and they were really effective as a duo. And eventually, when the Shadow Dragons were formed, they immediately joined. Their compatibility was apparent right away so from the start, the Mercars made their mark in the organization. So much so that they became affectionately known as “The Mercar Strays” (strays because Ezra was found, and Blair kinda was too haha).
As much as Ezra played a major role in making Blair who she is today, her presence in his life was just as impactful to Ezra. He was 23 when he met her and brought her into his family. Ezra was still figuring out who he was and what he wanted to do with his life. Blair became his mission and his purpose. She kinda forced him to grow up. He had to model to her what he himself should be which was totally a “fake it till you make it” situation. He learned how to lead by example and protect those that need defending. It shaped how he approached his work and absolutely how he leads the team in Veilguard.
In Ezra’s canon, Blair is still a part of the Shadow Dragons and is working actively with them. I’m still noodling on what his personal quest would be if I gave him one and how much it would or would not include Blair. But either way, in each of their canons, they are a big part of who they are and their personal arcs.
The companions that he is closest to in Veilguard are Neve (he romances her. Fellow Minrathous citizen, fights for their city, he’s the light she needs, etc), Bellara (reminds him of Blair a bit. In a little sister way), and Davrin (Bros. Yup that's it. They’re bros. Love em. Well actually there is more to them - they both have a strong sense of duty and responsibility to something bigger than themselves and greatly respect each other for it.). Ezra chooses Minrathous over Treviso and I haven’t decided on how hes going to handle Solas. I think that depends on how I handle any personal arc I give him.
And that’s Ezra! 🤍

Techpriest Enginseer Bi-Δ Veltrok, the second most regular member of Inquisitor Wrex's retinue, she oversees the maintenance and upkeep of the many relics in the retinue's service. Often only absent when recalled to report on specific activity, deliver relics on behalf of the inquisition, or receive additional training in ancient machine rites.
She relishes every time she gets to partake in field work, particularly in stress testing xenos defenses against the technologies of the imperium. The many augments she has received in her time under inquisitorial service are far in excess of what an enginseer would normally sport, allowed only citing that she needs proper tools to represent the mechanicus' good name. In truth, many of her newer augments are battlefield salvage the magos would frown on, especially her left arm, liberated from a xenarite magos executed by the Inquisitor for aiding an ork incursion in the name of research.
#warhammer 40k#painting log#finished units#imperial inquisition#techpriest#a very fun model to build#shes as tall as a terminator#so i love how my decently tall inquisitor picked towering right and left hands#god i need those bits to get here so i can get Wrex finished and painted#feels hollow to take retinue pics when the inquisitor isnt done

Has any of the Arc's spared with Cardin since the explosion. Like I can see why Goodwitch wouldn't let Cardin fight any of them. Grimm Arc has a strong chance of "accidently" killing him. Commissar Arc has a strong chance of deliberately killing him and while Russian Arc is unlikely to kill him it would be so one sided that no one would learn anything, guy with a Tesla gun and being to old to deal with bullshit Vs a guy in metal armour
The reason why none of the Jaune's had spared with Cardin is do to him Still in the nurses office from his severe injuries. Cardin has 80% of his body burned to the crisp, as well having his entire bones shattered and broken from just being slammed to the ground. And it’s considered that Nikolai went very delicately easy on him, because to him Cardin is a fragile little cockroach that can be easily crashe underneath his boot.
but if we talking about how powerful each of Jaune’s are, it’s very simple.
Commissar Arc #3: he is very skilled Swordsman and gunslinger, his capable with every weapon that imperium has, he even knows how to use some of the Xenos weapons, which he prefer not to use at all due to him not wanting to touch the heretical technology of the Xenos. his semblance Which he considered and very believes that is the God Empress blessing, the Empress light that’s what he calls his semblance allows him to see the corruption of chaos within any men, such example a heretical inquisitor that was part of cult that was planning to destroy a industrial world, was identified by him later on executed by the Inquisition and the green Knight. The Emperor holy light grants him powers that should him from any whispers corruption of chaos making him immune to their powers, he’s only vulnerable when he’s aura is shattered. But despite everything, the commissar is still a simple mortal man, yes he very skilled in battle and in mind, but compared to the other Jaune’s he is the least powerful.
Grimm Arc #2: he is very powerful human Grimm hybrid, His powers given by the God of darkness, allows him to control and create any Grimm he can imagine. His primarily uses his dark magic that makes his enemies fall to fear and despair upon them. Grimm Arc prefers to use stealth and infiltration tactics, he likes to play with his enemies before union doom upon them. he is very sadistic towards his enemies using his semblance and magic to spread chaos to his enemies. He can make his body parts to change into anything he wants like lawn claws, shark tail, wings, or tentacles that he usually prefer to rip apart his enemies peace by peace. Grimm is indeed a very powerful one, but he still has his limits to his power, as well, he still learning how to use them.
Soviet Arc #1: He is the most skilled and Powerful out of all Jaune’s, as said earlier, his semblance and aura has mutated when he was living on earth. it changed his physical body, making him stronger, faster, smarter, and many other things that pass any talented people. His semblance aura amplification has mutated that he can generate his aura non-stop giving him endless reserve of aura, as well, he can amplify every part of his body non-stop to the point that he semblance works automatically with without him noticing at all. His embodiment of a living weapon, he cannot be injured as his body can regenerate any damage, including damage limbs or destroyed organs or anything else. Nikolai is considered the most powerful and dangerous man that exist on earth and remnant. Because of his powers and skills he gained many titles by he’s enemies during many wars he was a part of. The Butcher of London, The Pillager of Paris, Soviet Dracula, And most famously Warmaster. and he has many titles given by his allies and his people. Liberator of Africa, protector of the week, angel of salvation, Marshall of Justice. Nikolai is considered the most powerful and most dangerous out of all Jaune’s, even though he haven’t showed his full power and all of his abilities, so only God knows what this man truly capable of.
so basically his the least of how powerful each of the Jaune’s is. Do you know that I didn’t put everything that I wanted to write as I didn’t want to spoil everything just yet, there’s still many things about Jaune’s that I didn’t show yet. So stick around and you will see what the powers and ability each of them have.

The beginning of Tzeentch. In this post I will explore where Tzeentch came from, and his earliest mentions and depictions, and his likely inspirations.
Realm of Chaos Book 1, 1988, picture of Tzeentch.

This is the earliest depiction of Tzeentch I've been able to find in the history of Warhammer publications.
Prior to this only Khorne and Nurgle were described in Warhammer fantasy roleplay 1986.

The earliest list of the Chaos gods names (and therefore the earliest printing of the name 'Tzeentch') I've been able to find, is from Warhammer 1st edition, Forces of Fantasy 1983 (first paragraph at the top of page 40) though it gives no description or depiction of them.
'... worship a documented god (Khorne, Slaanesh, Nurgle or Tzeentch at the time of writing)...' either Rick Priestley or Bryan Ansell in 1983

The image of Tzeentch appears to be kept consistent in modern editions as seen in this picture from Age of Sigmar (1st ed 2017, Disciples of Tzeentch)

And the description given of Tzeentch in the realm of chaos book is repeated in the Warhammer armies Chaos 4th & 5th edition, liber Chaotica Tzeentch, codex chaos etc. (pictured below is the description from the liber Chaotica (2005) followed by the description & adjoining picture in the realm of chaos book 2 (1990)

The face of Tzeentch is even given as a champion upgrade in the realm of chaos (1990), showing a cut of this much larger picture found elsewhere in the same book.
To definitively conclude this: Tzeentch is a big horned horror. Just like a big pink/blue horror, with two main arms, & two horned limbs right above his main arms, and two great big sweeping horns from above his brow which look more like moving snakes with faces on the end. He has a main face around his shoulder level, two smaller faces below on either side, and a large face across his belly. Any other faces are presumably transitory.
'Tzeen' means 'change' in the dark tongue, and 'neth' or 'leth' mean 'lord'. Hence Tzeeneth means Change-Lord. Its common form in the language of the empire or Imperium is Tzeentch
The inspiration for Tzeentch are most likely gods like Arioch, of Micheal Moorcock's Elric of Melnibone saga, and Nyarlathotep of H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos.
The 2nd Edition of Warhammer Fantasy Battles has a dedication to Michael Moorcock, Phil Barker and Donald Featherstone.
Moorcock's Elric of Melnibone saga (1960s) creates the Chaos - Law paradigm, where there are two sets of opposing Gods. Arioch is the main Chaos God and his relationship with Elric is highly characteristic of how Warhammer would go on to depict the relationship between a chaos champion and their god.
Whilst Chaos and Law appear superficially attached to evil & good, this becomes questioned as Moorcock eventually presents the idea that progress is only possible with a balance between chaos and law, as to live in a world of pure law and tradition would allow no change, and a world of pure chaos would live every day as if it was the first never progressing past it.
This likely inspired the early Dungeons and Dragons writers as well and is probably the reason Chaos & Order exist on a perpendicular axiom to Good and Evil on alignment charts in D&D. The early Warhammer writers were reacting towards D&D and inherited much from them (1st ed citadel miniatures from white dwarf issue 12 were 'advanced dungeons and dragons' minis).
The Moorcock's Elric of Melnibone is also likely the source for the idea of mutation in the Warhammer sense, and is likely the inspiration for the idea of Daemon Weapons, and Sentient Weapons.
Lovecraft is better known these days than Moorcock and probably needs no introduction. It's clear the eldritch ancient horrors of the Great Old Ones and their endless conspiracies to find a way (back) into reality and take it over, also inspired the idea of 'chaos' in both dungeons and dragons and Warhammer. The madness which comes from the Necronomicon and knowing it's secrets, echoes the madness followers of chaos might expect when learning more about the warp and their god. Stories like the Dunwich Horror could as easily be describing a daemonic incursion in the Warhammer world with little alteration needed.
The fusion of Moorcock's and Lovecraft's lore appears to be the inspiration for Chaos. They define the concept of a god without it being all powerful, and foreshadow the different relationships that are created between mortal followers of chaos and their gods. They introduce the themes of mutation and madness which characterise Chaos, thereby appearing to be the ingredients of what became Chaos in the Warhammer sense.
Khorne appears little more than a classic war god in this Warhammer-Chaos veneer, and likewise Slaanesh is clearly inspired by a unification of Astarte, Dionysus, & succubi/incubi in a manner reminiscent of the Christian Devil. Perhaps considering Khorne's image and that of his blood letters, one could conclude that both Khorne and Slaanesh look heavily towards the Christian Devil for inspiration, albeit in different ways.
Nurgle is loosely presented as a death god, and one day I'll look into his inspiration properly. Similarly Tzeentch is presented as a god of sorcery. It's suffice to say here that neither Nurgle nor Tzeentch draw as much from ancient mythology, as unlike Khorne and Slaanesh, their personalities are utterly antithetical towards the personalities of the ancient gods of death and magic which they would nominally be attributed towards. It is my opinion so far in researching this that both Nurgle and Tzeentch draw far more heavily on Moorcock & Lovecraft than the other two, uniting the themes of mutation and madness in chaos and more purely attempt to capture the very essence of Chaos itself. It seams as if Nurgle is the abundant manifestation of chaos and Tzeentch is the distilled essence of chaos.

The argument that BH should have just left and let Vasselheim deal with the Predathos gate has deeply frustrated me, but I couldn't quite put into words why before, but I think I can now.
The reason why this talking point doesn't sit right with me is because...well...Vasselheim has already made it very clear that they believe the Ruidians'/Ruidusborn's very existence to be heterical, and therefore inherently evil.
(And sorry, I despise the "inherently evil unredeemable species/race" trope with a passion, and I highly doubt that Matt would play into that trope for the sake of making his narrative "easier" to digest. It would just be plain lazy and contradictory to the story Matt and the players have been telling).
Hell, one of the first things brought up during that meeting with the Exandrian Accord was that the Ruidians should be wiped out entirely.
Not the Imperium, the literal fascist, imperialist, book-burning, practitioners of race science that force their own people into caste systems, aka the actual villains here, but Ruidians as a whole. Never mind that many of these Ruidians have already had their own cultures wiped out by the Imperium centuries ago, so they are now forced to live within a single monolithic one, with almost no connection to their roots.
The same Imperium who now has no leg to stand on: The Weave Mind has been slain and their feral attack dog has been taken off-world. This government is weakened, and the odds are no longer in their favor. The Ruidians, especially the Volition, now have a huge opportunity to uproot the remains of the Imperium and liberate themselves from centuries of subjugation.
But, they have to survive and live to do that. Sure, they could accept some help, but ultimately, they have to be the dealers of their liberation.
I do not trust that Vasselheim cares about this, though, and that's why I am uneasy about Vasselheim onto Ruidus to do whatever they think is necessary. Because it sure as hell won't be aiding the Volition in the liberation of their people. We've already seen the arrogance and dismissiveness of Vasselheim in Hearthdale, what makes people think that they won't have this same attitude towards the Ruidians and their plight?
The armies of Vasselheim are a militarized religious institutional force, not some humble society of peacekeeping, pacifist monks. They are here to enforce the status quo. And if that status quo includes a full-scale invasion and genocide of an entire planet of people because of their own implicit biases?
Then I'm sorry, you can never convince me that Bells Hells are the bad guys in this situation. BH could and should have been meaner, actually.
#critical role#i understand metaphors the reference real-world issues and events can be clunky when applied to a fantasy setting#and exandria certainly isn't bereft of clunky world building#but. idk. this is what we've been given and there are clear patterns here that need to be addressed and analyzed.
