I don’t have much reach on Tumblr so reblogs are hugely appreciated.
The Glad Day Bookshop in Toronto, Canada is in danger of eviction. Besides being the oldest (and non-profit!) queer bookshop in the world, they are also a coffee shop and events venue providing a much needed place for queers of every flavor to feel safe and supported. If you have the means to help, please do! If not, reblogs and sharing on other platforms are very very appreciated. Queer spaces worldwide are getting fewer. We have to try to save the ones we have.

The Immediate Crisis -
Glad Day has reached a crisis point. Since the ‘end’ of the pandemic (and the end of COVID-19 subsidies) we have been struggling. We have been going into debt almost every month for the last 2 years. We have often been short on rent. Our landlord has been patient but if we are unable to provide him with a lump sum payment of $100,000 in July, we will be evicted. BUT if we can pay him $100,000, he has agreed to a small reduction in our rent for 1 year, which gives us time to consult with our communities, explore our options, and create the next version of Glad Day.
The Strategy -
We are hoping to raise $300,000 to give us at least one more stable year at our current location and provide the capacity needed to dream of and act on whatever Glad Day becomes next.
This fundraiser will help us prevent a crisis, stabilize us for a year and be a catalyst for rebirth.
We know that with intense inflation, funds are tight for many people and you may already be donating to other organizations. Any support you can provide, even if it is sharing this campaign with one other person, is deeply appreciated.

The soul singer who helped lay the groundwork for Toronto’s music scene has been memorialized outside of the former nightclub where she solidified her career in the ‘60s.
A Heritage Toronto plaque honouring the late Jackie Shane, a transgender musician originally from Nashville, Tenn. who called Toronto home, was unveiled Friday morning in a ceremony marking the start of Pride weekend in the city and officially proclaimed June 23 “Jackie Shane Day.”
“She was someone who made the incredibly, incredibly brave decision to show the world exactly who she was in a time when the world didn’t even have the right words to describe her presence,” Marci Ien, minister for women and gender equality and youth, said at the site of the former Sapphire Tavern at Victoria and Richmond streets.
Shane, who once shared stages with Jimi Hendrix, Etta James, and Little Richard, moved to Toronto in 1959. She landed a residency at the Sapphire and released her biggest hit in 1962, “Any Other Way.” [...]

I love the Canada's Drag Race Season 4 cast a normal amount <3
Edit: Happy Pride! Last Wednesday I went to Starry Night and met the Top 3 of Canada's Drag Race Aurora Denim and Venus as well as USA Drag Race Season 16 winner from Taiwan: Nymphia Wind! Glad we all color coordinated and I enjoyed meeting them a lot. They liked my last minute put together outfit and I definitely vote yellow for sure.

For my queer Canadian (Torontonian) audience:
You should watch Stories from my Gay Grandparents on YouTube! It’s hilarious, emotional, joyful about a pair of grandparents coming out to their two adult gay grandkids. It’s only 10 episodes each about 11 minutes long, but it’s so good!
And if you’re not Canadian, still watch it anyway! It’s so good and I hope they can get another season.

glad day is literally the coolest bookstore ever btw.
it’s the oldest surviving queer bookstore in the world and they always have art and zines by independent artists and they do drag brunches every Sunday and they have a bar/cafe so you can get a little drink while you’re there (and they have lots of non-alcoholic cocktail options, all of which are just as fun as the alcoholic version)
and ik they’re struggling to stay open right now so if you’re near Toronto you should check them out because they are so cool and the staff are so nice and it’s been the highlight of my visit the last few times i’ve been in Toronto
