Whumptober day 13: Over the waterfall of death
whumptober day 13 prompt: Team as family| Multiple Whumpees | "Death will do us part." -
(SPOILERS FOR EP 9 OF ICEBOUND)
Death was imminent,
Ice was imminent.
That is what he had once told Taishen on that fateful day, the day the dragonborn crashed them into the ice of Drakkar. The day their battle for survival had started, and the peace of the ship had faded. He could recall the terror he had sensed around him in that moment, yet it was nothing compared to the terror the group felt in the present.
There was little thought going through Jornirs head as he dragged Taishen off of the ice. He could hear his heart racing in his ears, and little more then that. The deafening screech from the wendigo had done its toll upon him, his hearing and communication limited to watching the actions of the others around him. Each yell sounded like it had been muffled through walls of ice, each hit against them no more then a muffled noise of blood hitting the ground.
He didn't think much before grasping the golden dragonborn in his arms, ignoring the bodies of his friends that lay either dead or close to it. He felt the man flailing in panic as Jornir lept off of the ice, his body falling ridgid as they landed in the ice cold water, somehow more cold then he had ever felt before. He felt the arms of taishen wrap around his shoulders, clasping onto him tightly as they were ripped down the winding river. He could feel claws ripping at his back to keep tightly held in his arms, he couldn't care less if it tore his shirt, or scared his skin, it was nothing in comparison to the wounds that Taishen and the others bore atop their bodies.
“ Do not let go.”
- or: the waterfall scene and the aftermath but reimagined to be more angst bc no one is getting out of this without being properly injured and traumatized. (blame derek)

Sky choked as another kick landed in the small of his back. His stomach twisted, but there was nothing left to throw up and all he could do was cough and gasp, reaching for some happy memory he could use to comfort himself and escape this experience.
"Oh, no, Chosen Hero," said the Shadow, kicking him again. "You don't get to pass out just yet."
Sky gritted his teeth and screwed his eyes shut. One of them, anyway. The other was already so swollen with bruises he couldn't have opened it if he'd wanted to.
"It makes sense, though." He heard footsteps walking round him and the Shadow's voice shifted to something like an echo of his own. "You always were a coward."
"If y'... wan' me… g'v… trif'rce… wrong way… go 'bout it." he panted out.
The Shadow snorted. "Do they know? Those two boys I captured you with?"
Sky didn't waste breath on asking what Hyrule and Legend were supposed to know.
"Do they know you're the reason for all their pain?" The incongruously-light footsteps paced around Sky in circles. "The sharp-tempered one… does he know you're why his beloved uncle died in his arms and he's spent his whole life on one quest after another? And your sweet little healer. Does he know you're why his world is, well, the way it is?"
The words sent a chill through Sky's body despite his pain and weakness.
"So much suffering," mused the Shadow, pausing by Sky's head and putting a booted foot on his right arm, just below the manacle on his wrist. "For so many people, but especially the ones you call your brothers. All because you were slow. All because you were a coward."
The words wormed into the wound in Sky's heart that had never fully healed, but he was determined not to show the Shadow that he'd found a weak point.
"I assume you'd like to keep your lie going and let them keep thinking you're a hero just like them." The Shadow leaned a little more weight on Sky's arm, grinding the bones together and finally wringing a whimper through gritted teeth. "Oh, good, I was starting to wonder if you were still conscious."
"Oh… 'm still… conscious." It was intended as a growl, but he knew it came out as more of a moan.
"Good." The Shadow eased up slightly on Sky's arm. "So. Do you want me to tell them the truth?"
Sky didn't, but he still didn't want to show that kind of weakness.
"Not even enough courage to say 'no' out loud, I see." The Shadow stepped off Sky's arm and started pacing around him. "Heroes. You talk so much about goodness and light. Who knew that you would find daylight just as violent as anyone else?" His voice took on the hiss of his lizalfos form even as he spoke.
Sky still didn't reply, trying to ignore the pain in his body and heart, trying not to let the words land.
A scaled hand grabbed the back of his neck to hold him down and he squirmed instinctively, his breath catching in his throat. The Shadow barely acknowledged his struggles except to tighten his grip slightly as with his other hand he released the chain between Sky's wrists from the catch holding it to the floor.
Sky yelped in pain as he was hauled to his feet, still by the back of his neck, and almost before he had found his feet the Shadow had taken hold of his wrists and was dragging him off down the corridor back to their cell, so fast it was all he could do not to trip and fall as he followed, especially as the pull on his arms sent fire chasing through his injured ribs. When they reached the door, the Shadow shoved him against the wall, one hand still holding his wrists high above his head, the other closing on his jaw.
"I want information from you. You want silence from me. I suggest you consider your options," the Shadow hissed in his ear.
Sky knew his options. And giving up the triforce and the other heroes wasn't one of them.
The Shadow unbolted the cell door and hurled Sky in. He cried out as he landed, pain once again shooting through his battered body, and couldn't even try to resist as his chained wrists were once again attached to a tether in a corner of the cell. He had barely gathered up the strength to move when the door slammed and the cell was plunged into darkness.
"Sky?" asked Hyrule's voice. "Are you there?"
Sky stirred, biting back a moan.
"How bad is it?" asked Legend quietly.
"Nothin' new broken," replied Sky. Plenty of new bruises and some lash marks, but nothing deeper. He coughed to clear his throat. "Not too… much blood lost. You two OK?"
"You worry about yourself for now," said Legend.
"You missed a meal," said Hyrule sadly. "We saved you some of our rations. Can you move enough to reach?"
They'd discovered early on that they could just about touch each other if they reached out and strained against the chains on their manacles. Sky didn't have the energy to do that right now. And in any case he really didn't feel right taking any of their meager rations of food and water.
"Finish it," he said. "I… I'll be OK." He coughed again, struggling to find the words he knew he needed to say.
"Sky," said Legend suspiciously, "What's wrong? What happened?"
"There's… something I need to tell you." There. At least he'd started.
There was silence for a moment.
"Sky, we're going to get out of this," said Hyrule at the same time as Legend said, "Save it to tell us after."
"No, I… I have to tell you now. I should have told you before." Sky sighed and winced at a searing pain through his ribs. "There's… a secret I've been keeping. The Shadow seems to know it. I… want to tell you before he does."
Silence. Sky used the time to take another long breath, as deep as he could through a tight throat and broken ribs.
"There's… a curse. On me. On all of us. And it's my fault." Another cough. "It's… I fought… you know I didn't fight Ganon. I fought the demon lord Demise."
Gradually, he told the whole story, bleeding words into the darkness. How he had been too late over and over again. How it had taken him too long to save Zelda and how she had suffered as a result. How when the battle was done and he stood over the defeated demon, he had been too slow once again. The words Demise had spoken, dooming him and Zelda and all their descendents and successors.
"I was too slow," he said bitterly, the words scraping in his dry, worn throat. He ignored the pain and difficulty. It was the least he deserved. "And that's why… that's why. There are thousands of years of blood on my hands, all through time, all across timelines… Everything Ganon has done to any of you or your lands or those you love… ultimately it's because I was too slow." Finally, the words choked off. "I… knew you'd hate me. So I didn't tell you. I… I'm so sorry…"
Then he waited, choking back more sobs, more alone than he'd ever been, for their reaction.
He wished he could see them.
He was glad he couldn't.
Hyrule spoke first. "Sky, drink something," he said softly. "Here." There was a soft scrape of a wooden cup across the stone as it was nudged towards Sky.
Sky stared in the direction the voice had come from. "Dri- What?"
"He's right," said Legend. "You sound awful."
"Didn't you hear anything I just said?" That was more than his throat could stand and he broke down coughing.
"Of course we did," snapped Legend. "Now drink something."
Sky reached out, wincing as he moved his bruised, stiff body, and managed to hook a finger over the edge of the cup and carefully draw it towards himself. The water was stale and dirty, but it was wet and soothing on his dry throat and that was all that mattered. He sipped carefully, not wanting to risk making himself sick.
"Right," said Legend shakily. "Now, you listen to me, Feather-brain. None of this is your fault. You didn't make Demise kidnap Sun and you didn't make him curse you. You did your best to fight to save yourself and your home and your family the same as any of us. It's not your fault you had to."
"It is my fault I failed."
"Stop insulting my brother," said Hyrule, his voice raw.
"I'm… not?" said Sky, confused. "Legend -"
"Not my brother Legend, my brother Sky," said Hyrule.
"We can talk about what happened and what it means," said Legend. "But right now, stop blaming yourself for everything that happened to us. Even if I thought you did it on purpose for some dumb reason, Goddesses know there's blame to share around."
"And you'd have to have done something way worse for us to hate you," added Hyrule.
"Right," said Legend.
Sky's breath caught again and he squeezed his eyes shut, trying not to cry. He couldn't lose too much water. "You… mean it?"
"Yes," they said together.
"Th-thank you."
"Now get some rest," said Legend, more gently now. "We're going to get out of here, but you need to keep your strength up."
"Eat first," said Hyrule, and Sky once again heard the scrape of something being slid across the stone. "It's going to be OK."
Sky grabbed the plate and nibbled the two small pieces of stale bread, still sniffing back his tears.
It's going to be OK.
He still had his family. And with that knowledge to sustain him, he could hope.
It's going to be OK.

Digitalised + coloured + redesigned version of my Suiren and Vaatu sketch from two days ago, as promised!!
Coming up with Suiren’s design was a very long process of trying and failing because after you’ve drawn 9+ different versions of one character, the creativity starts to run a little dry, but I’m actually really proud of this one, she looks absolutely adorable <3
(Also yeah I did mostly just scribble Vaatu’s pattern because who has the energy to draw the all out accurately. Not me, that’s who, I’m chronically tired. People who draw him on the regular have my utmost respect. He’s still a funky little guy though :D)
Bonus, Raava incessantly screaming inside Suiren (and being completely ignored because Suiren is tired of her) while all this is happening:
Tumblr media
#and yeah I did say I’d do a fuckass background but all my energy went to figuring out Suiren’s design#plus I suck at backgrounds so.. woe. LoK screenshot be upon ye#my art#artists on tumblr#the legend of korra#avatar suiren au#original character#sotrl suiren#vaatu#I don’t really know what to say in these tags lmao#usually I reach the tag limit really really easily but between my previous post and answering that ask I’ve ran out of things to say#someone please indulge me in this au I have Way Too Many Thoughts about it#hmm…#you know. I think people often make different avatar aus because they dislike Korra or think she’s a bad avatar#I don’t. I love Korra. I would kill and die for her#(says the red lotus stan. yes I’m well aware. no need to call me out)#and I think she’s a good avatar who was dealt a shitty hand both in universe and by the show’s production team#I’m making this au BECAUSE I love Korra. if Suiren is the avatar Korra gets to be a normal SWT girl#she’ll get to grow up with her parents. not isolated and degraded all the time for not being perfect. maybe she’d have a sibling or two#and Suiren gets spared her sotrl trauma too. win win for everyone!!#(I return Suiren gets the weight of the world on her shoulders lmao. but it’s fine. 1. she isn’t alone in it. she has her family#2. three quarters of the LoK threats are basically automatically eliminated for her. the RL are her parents. she fuses with Vaatu#and all she has to do to defeat Kuvira is to take her dress off 😁 /hj. basically. she’ll be okay. better than in sotrl at least)#also look. I love Suiren. she’s my dear child who’s been with me since I was 12. of course I wanna make her the main character in everything#and dark avatar Korra AUs have been done countless times before me. Kat’s doing one right now!! I just wanna do something that’s my own#and also I wanna focus less on pain and trauma for once and more on the sheer hilarity of the shenanigans that will occur post-fusion#cause this isn’t Adumbration where Korra lets Raava go and fuses with Vaatu instead. here Suiren’s got both of them at the same time#and they have 10000 years’ worth of grievances to air out. it’s like living with your divorced parents#trust me I would know. except mine aren’t divorced. they’re Worse and everyone wishes they’d just separate#anyway. that aside. Suiren’s not getting any sleep any time soon while those two duke it out

i like to think the reason volo is so surprised that togepi likes him is that he actually hated togepi at first.
now, i'm assuming it's the same togepi as in PLA and dimensional shenanigans mean that he was pulled in with the wrong version of her.
so, allow me to set the scene, under the cut:
this story takes place almost six years before our protagonist (who is akari, in my heart) arrives in hisui. volo, seemingly a young man, arrives at cogita's place, due to a letter she sent to him.
she reveals to him that the pokemon nearby have been spooked badly by something, or someone. he agrees to take a look, if she'll share a particular book with him.
so, volo sets off and finds an injured hisuian decidueye, who attacks him with impunity. during this fight, he notices and correctly deduces that:
a) this decidueye was injured by someone, and
b) he has something to protect, likely a child
because of the book that's promised to him, and because volo sees value in having such a strong pokemon aid him, volo begins his attempts to "befriend" the decidueye.
the next day, while he's still injured (for which cogita displays motherly concern, which volo dismisses due to his resentment of her), he returns to heal the decidueye—and leaves some berries that not only help heal injuries, but are also good for young pokemon to eat.
this goes on for roughly a month before decidueye decides he can trust volo with the existence of his child—togepi, then a helpless egg. and volo, while he refuses to analyze it, actually enjoys spending time with decidueye. it's the first time he's done so in years, since the passing of the two pokemon who had followed him through his childhood (and died for it).
but good things aren't meant to last. though decidueye heals up nicely, he's still rather weak because of his injuries, which were long left untreated. he lasts for another three months before he entrusts togepi, still an egg, to volo, expending the last of his energy to go find an heirloom he and his deceased mate wanted to leave for their child.
and volo hates togepi for it.
every time he looks at the egg, he considerd smashing it. "if it wasn't for you, decidueye would still be alive." he can't fathom decidueye's actions, nor can he accept it as "selflessness (on decidueye's part)" instead of "selfishness (on togepi's part)".
mind you, togepi is an egg. she can't do shit.
but he always stops himself before he does anything he'll regret, eventually convincing himself that raising a pokemon from the beginning ensures loyalty—at least until togepi finds a better master, or learns that volo could do nothing for her father.
but volo, despite how twisted he is, ends up charmed by how togepi follows him around. even if he's rude and cold at times, though he does the bare minimum, she still looks at him as if he's hung the sun, the stars, the moon—even the clouds in the sky. and volo is weak to that genuineness, despite thinking that togepi has every reason to hate him, even though he internally treats it with revulsion.
[now, for an intermission, things volo has definitely thought about togepi:
(after she presents him with a daisy because she thinks it'll look good against his hair) "i wonder if there's anything in that empty head of yours. silly girl, you should be worrying about yourself."
(when togepi tries to change his towel when he gets a fever) "i know that it's only a matter of time. i know that. but if i close my eyes, i can return to the past and take you with me. so, just for today...i..."
(after someone says that it's amazing how well-behaved togepi is) "that's like remarking on a daughter obedient to her father. in exchange for gems and other finery, she plays a quiet, docile fool, until she has no need of him. that's why...i need to find the rest of those plates soon. so that...we can remain together i will never be betrayed."]
and togepi, despite being young, can understand volo is hurting, but is ultimately a good person. volo is not only the closest thing she has to a dad, but she's also the only one who can worm into his heart now, or so cogita says. so she makes it her life's goal to make volo happy, because she hates it when he's unhappy, even if it means making very questionable decisions and hurting someone else she loves.
[now, another intermission—things togepi has definitely thought about volo:
(after he smiles sadly) "ah...don't smile like that." (smushes his cheeks, causing him to snort and laugh) "please let him always be happy. please let me make him happy.”
(after witnessing a father-daughter pokemon duo in the wild) "a father? the way you're looking at them...it seems like you also don't know what a father is." (after being told what a father is) "ah, that's not true. it seems we're not the same. i have a father...and i'm not old enough to be yours..."
(after being told what volo wants to achieve) "if the world is remade...then will you and i ever meet?" (cuddles in beside volo) "but you said, 'we'll do it together.' so...whatever you need me to do...i'll do it."]
after all, it only makes sense that volo's pokemon are equally crazy, and possibly very devoted to him. that craziness is why n lies to volo—it's not that togepi tells n their plans, it's that she's frighteningly devoted to him, almost in the same way some members of team plasma acted.
[by the way, cogita also gifts him some letters from his deceased mother (who was her niece) that she found while cleaning. that's actually the reason she calls him, because it's his mother's birthday. they end up celebrating it for the first time in a looong time, and cogita thinks she might've raised him right (nope)]

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS EPISODE OF MONDAY NIGHT FRESH (part of “ROAD TO FICTIONAL WRESTLEMANIA”)
Tumblr media
(Ruby Rose and Korra are in the ring, both of them holding microphones. Ruby is also wearing the Ultimate Women’s Championship belt around her waist. Also in the ring is Luz Noceda of The Owl House, who is acting as the mediator)
Ruby Rose (RWBY): Korra, you know I respect you and all. And I’m flattered you used your Royal Rumble title shot against me. But the truth is…I don’t think you’re good enough to beat me.
(crowd goes “Oooohhhhh” as Korra smirks)
Korra (TLOK): That’s funny, coming from you. You think I can’t beat you on my own? This is coming from the girl who can’t do anything without her crew of idiots.
(crowd goes “Oooohhhhh” as Ruby rolls her eyes)
Korra (TLOK): Tell me Ruby…do you seriously think you got that belt on your own? You’re gonna tell me that one-armed Yang, former terrorist Blake, and former racist Weiss didn’t help you out? Do you, the least talented wrestler in your entire team, seriously think you deserve that belt?
Ruby Rose (RWBY): Yes actually, I did beat Asami Sato for this belt fair and square. In fact, you can go and rewatch our match at last year’s Survivor Series. I know you’re broke and all, but you can probably go on YouTube to watch the highlights for free. Oh hey, speaking of Asami! Now that I think about it, did you challenge me because you actually want the belt…or did your mistress tell you to do it?
(Korra glares at Ruby as the crowd goes into a frenzy)
Ruby Rose (RWBY): You talking all that nonsense about me needing RWBY to stay as champion. Girl, the only reason why you’re relevant is because Asami Sato propped you up!
(Korra is about to lunge at Ruby, which leads to Luz Noceda stepping in to separate the two)

(Footage from backstage. Denji is walking down a hallway when he’s suddenly confronted by Loid Forger)
Loid Forger (Spy x Family): Denji, what the hell was that!
Denji (Chainsaw Man): Look, I told you and your wife to not mess with Makima-
Loid Forger (Spy x Family): -Makima spat at Anya! And she did that right in front of Yor! This feud is between her and Yor, keep my daughter out of this! You know that was uncalled for!
Denji (Chainsaw Man): Well what do you want me to do about it?! I can’t control Makima!
Loid Forger (Spy x Family): Well, you better find a way to deal with her, or I will-
(All of a sudden, Aki Hayakawa shows up and hits Loid with a kendo stick right in the head. Loid collapses to the ground, groaning in pain)
Denji (Chainsaw Man): What the f*** was that for!?
Aki Hayakawa (Chainsaw Man): Makima sends her regards. Loid, if you’re still conscious…let your idiot wife know that her life is about to become a living hell.
(Aki walks away as Denji calls out to the wrestling staff to get medical attention for Loid)
