can't do this one as a poll bc there's endless choices but if you're in college/university or went to college/university what's been the most fun/enriching class you've had?
#for me it wasn't fun but the most enriching one I've had was the history of racism#learned a ton in that class#I also really did enjoy my history of american religion course even though the professor was a tough grader#he shattered my ego a couple times lmfao

I just read your theater group staging a fake car crash and then having a fake funeral for the people who fake died before prom and just wanted to say my high school did the same and reading it in your tags made me realize how fucked it was
a lot of things american schools do are kinda fucked
a full contact sport that encourages getting concussions in an academic setting
school shootings
expecting a ton of children who don't have jobs to pay for their own lunch
we all have to stand for the flag every morning. workplaces and universities don't do this. we also have to have a minute of silence that was SUPPOSED to originally be for the victims of 9/11 but its been more then 20 years and they havent taken it out yet. if you live in texas, you have to do the texas pledge of allegiance too.
homework. if you had a salary job and were only working for 40 hours a week but your boss asks you to take home work, you would fucking quit. kids don't have that option
#i honestly beleive that children are one of the most abused groups of people and school does NOT help that#is giving these kids a standardized education good? yes absoutely#but we dont need to work them to death to do it#they need to grow and move their bodies and do learning in person#like let them build legos. or take them in a field and let them connect with nature. theres a ton of shit that schools could do#thatll let kids learn the basics theyre learning in the classroom#and let them see those principles in action#also for the love of god 50 min classes is not enough time to learn jack shit it just makes kids avoident of the classses they dislike and#it exalerborates their weakness in that field of study#anyway#ask#anonymous

my seniors have been so quiet all year and it’s been fine cause we’ve had a lot of writing/research to do but I need them to talk to me now so i was hit by a bolt of inspiration two days ago and I made them all tell me their comfort level with sharing aloud, rating themselves on a scale of 1-10. I then averaged the class score and they’re a 4.5. I then told them yesterday we needed to raise the score the tiniest bit. And the 1’s and 2’s didn’t need to be 10’s just maybe 3’s and 4’s. And they tried! They talked more 😭
#it’s sooooo hard because when a class is quiet my default is to assume you hate me#which is so hard because I need a response. which is why I actually can handle a loud raucous class pretty well because it’s just about#holding their attention and redirecting#but when they’re quiet it’s so hard. but i’ve really forced myself to be like ‘they don’t hate you they’re just quiet’#and they ARE#and actually they are reading (not all of them lol) and a lot of them want to learn#it was really helpful going to try to capitalize on this today#I had a moment a few weeks ago where I taught them a poem and it was crickets and I was like sigh they hate it and me#but then I said wanna learn another one? and like—seven of them nodded at me with big eyes and quiet enthusiasm#and I was like okayyyyy there is something going on#it feels so different teaching them than any other class it’s been a real learning experience for me#also yesterday we were talking about Jane Fairfax and Emma hating her lolololol#and Emma being frustrated with Jane’s reserve and I teased them a little bit#I said you’re not cold but you ARE reserved and I am Emma trying to get you to tell me about Frank Churchill at Weymouth#literally lol#ALSO it hit me like a ton of bricks yesterday that this is the class where I need to tell them WHY I make them tell me all the plot details#and we go over it together#and the actual concrete purpose of it. cause it isn’t just book-clubbing it!#it has to do with guiding them through a novel but also teaching them how to do it themselves#I get so prickly when people think it’s just book club behavior#if I was in a book club i would be a tyrant which is why I belong in a classroom#ANYWAY I AM WASTING THE DAY AWAY#but i have woken up with great excitement because I’ve been mulling on the seniors all year#and I feel like I’m getting somewhere#teaching tag

Gesture & Figure Studies
I mentioned in a previous post that a professor of mine gave me some resources that I find super helpful, and that once he fixed the links to those resources, I would share them here.
So, as promised, I'm making a post to compile the various online goodies I've been given/stumbled across on my own. All of these are super good resources to practice gesture drawing for free, and in a more comfortable environment than staring at a real person three feet away from you. Some of these are also good references to have for longer drawings, so feel free to use them in whatever way helps you! Links put below:
Before anything, I think it's important to explain what exactly gesture is. At its core, gesture is simply looking at some form of reference, and drawing what you see as quickly as possible. Gesture drawing isn't actually exclusive to drawing people; it's helpful with pretty much all subject matter, such as still-lifes or landscapes. This post focuses on figure studies, but the techniques found here can be used elsewhere too.
These exercises are typically done in increments of 30 seconds-5 minutes. That's not a lot of time, so it's very important to not get hung up on details while working. Instead, focus on whatever you're drawing in its entirety; the point is to capture the energy of whatever you're looking at, not each individual shape. These drawings tend to look a little goofy and that's perfectly fine! The important part is proportion and energy, not form.
Below are a couple of videos that I think best help introduce gesture drawing. Seeing it is action explains it better than words can, in my opinion:
A demo of figure gesture drawing (this is closest to how I was taught)
Short video that explains good things to watch out for while you work
And for the poses:
Playlist of timed poses (non-nude)
Playlist of timed poses (nude)
Pose image library (nude/non-nude/hands/more+)
Timed image library (nude/non-nude/hands/more+)
Another timed image library (nude/non-nude)
Pinterest board of hand/feet references (helpful even outside of gesture drawing)
HUGE pose reference library (very helpful even outside of gesture drawing)
DeviantArt page for the above (more poses I believe, but harder to navigate)
I'll update this post if I add anything else to this list, but this is all I have for now. Hopefully a couple of people can find this useful :D
#even if nobody uses these I would like to have them here so I don't loose them#but sharing is caring and I love these resources so maybe someone else might want them too#i will say:#if you're an artist/wanting to learn to draw people#and you ever get an opportunity to join a live model drawing session#definitely don't pass it up; they're not all nakey people#i've only seen one of these events held outside of my classes and I very much regret not being able to go#regardless learning it virtually is still a massive help and has been how i've learned for most of the past year#it's helped me a ton with my anatomy over the past year#but it's still a good way to warm up even if you don't need help with anatomy#gesture drawing#figure studies#art resources#drawing resources#non-art post

I am finally back in a sketching mood and getting my left-arm muscle-memory used to using my Cintiq and drawing in Photoshop. Am also still (still) working on the last bits of Ages because next year it will be TEN YEARS since I started that fic. And I intend to conclude it (part one, anyway) by (preferably before) 2024.
#bering and wells#i really need to get back into my doodle a week mood but#if there is one thing i have learned it is to not push myself beyond what i have the energy to do#hence why i haven't forced myself to draw in these past couple of months#my kitchen is still under construction lolll and i have been working a shit ton of overtime because COVID is still very much a thing#anywho my ideas are always more grand than my energy and one day they are going to align and All The Things ™ will be done#but that day is not today#animation class is going okay but it is exactly as burdensome as i thought it would be#oh have i not mentioned that i am turning 40 this year because that is also a thing#never mind that i am now the parent of a middle schooler#and a kindergartener lolll#goodnight

hey whisp hope you’re doing well! I’m trying to organize notes and things for a writing project and feel like I need a better system to group and visualize my material. is there a particular site, strategy, or program you use for your writing? a timelime with adjustable entry logs would be a gamechanger but I don’t like any of the ones I’ve seen on a superficial search
Hello hello! I am well, I hope you are as well!!
I don't do anything crazy myself, honestly I've tried other things, but I actually do most of my writing, including drafting and notes, just in a single document, even for some of my longer (100k+ stories).
I do have some stories that have multiple docs, but for those just having a file folder with multiple Word documents in it works for me. I use Word 2013 to write, and often will just open two documents side-by-side if I'm doing a rewrite or working off notes. I often put things in notepad as well to have an additional little window. But I, overall, work within a single document and just sorta...roll with it. Most of my organizing is in my head, and then it's in notes that I write in a scatter around the main document for the story.
Also a good old-fashioned bit of pen-and-paper suits me well too, I often write base timelines or draw diagrams physically when necessary. At the end of the day, a timeline is just a bulleted list, which basically any writing program can handle.
That being said, I have tried out a few different writing programs. The types that gamify the writing process never jive with me, and the one I felt was closest to what I want is Scrivner! Scrivner is paid, but there's a trial you can try out. It basically lets you have a bunch of documents related to each other, which makes it easy to write and add notes, and to open things on top of each other and such.
I've also heard decent things about Ellipsus, but haven't looked into it personally myself!
#shitpost#In my view it's just about having a place to easily DO that writing#rather than having any bells and whistles#I use Word purely because I learned it in school#and I use the 2013 version because I have it for free. lol.#also the 2013 version is also what I learned in school#for me a writing program is useless if I have to do tons of work to learn how to use it. Ultimately why I didn't jump ship to Scrivner.#for me its like. I need as few barriers to actually getting into the deep of it as possible#and sadly Microsoft programs are the most well-suited to that because i had literal classes on them.#I use Excel for work and note taking but not for fiction writing. Maybe if i really needed a complex timeline i'd try Excel?#but... most of my timelines are bulleted lists in my docs#my Time Displacement timeline is physically drawn on a piece of paper because it's two timelines lol#IDK sorry anon I am not the most help here!

Wait French grammar is close to Spanish????
Oh man
I think I officially tagged out when we got to the conjugation of verbs in indirect speech. I had Spanish in school and I was fine before that and then it just got wayyyy too much
lmaoooo rip anon
yeah French/Italian/Spanish/I think Portugese too? and a few others latin language, are all built on the same latin root logistic so the grammar works very similarly.
i picked on Italian in middle school but it's more the vocabulary that never stuck, and i picked up Spanish at uni, but same, didn't really stick.
though it means also i can somewhat read Spanish/Italian ahah
Like, English is simpler in term of just writing/grammar. (English's real challenge for Latin rooted language is the fact it's a tonal language, compared to French that's syllabic. Means English's accentuation of the words tend to focus on one syllab as the center of the word to pronounce but the rest will be muted. But that's also something i know English speakers don't realize, hell, i didn't realize either until i started to study English Linguistic and suddenly it made sense why, if you're from a language with more focus on syllabic, English comes off way harder. Point is that the real challenge for a Latin rooted language will be more on prononciation than on grammar. ) So it is easier to pick up when you don't have a native english background, but English to other language will be more challenging.
Conjugaison in French/Spanish/Italian follow similar logistic even in term of how many exceptions you have to remember. mostly because we slap everything on the suffix of the word. English will use modal words to mark various level of intentions, except in past tense. And in French/Spanish/Italian the suffix are also influenced by which pronoun is used (in Italian at least there's also the fact you can drop the pronoun all together if the verb is clear enough in its conjugaison about who you're talking about). And there's also the whole "the language is inherently more gendered so any attempt at a neutral comes with its lot of problem to discuss".
ironically despite being called Latin languages, this specific conjugaison rule doesn't apply to Latin itself, which has the same basis as German: the suffix aren't influenced by the pronouns, but by the role the word has in a sentence.
I picked up a bit of latin in middle school, didn't stick as well but i remember this sticking out.
English is just.... drastically simpler in the sense that conjugaison is stripped to its bare minimum and the pronouns use will do the heavy lifting in a different way. It's just that English is also working on difficult phonetic rules that aren't instinctive to follow, but yeah.
so yeah. rip you anon o7
#sorry i like. graduated highschool on a literature diploma degree#(which means focus on french literature linguistic languages history philosophy ect)#(with two languages course study (english in major focus + literature and a second language between italian spanish and german))#we had an optional course too which could be a third language or a specific art study angle#mine was Cinema studies but it means in my class group i had tons of 3rd language folks too#and yeah and then i got a diploma in english linguistic/literature/history#which requested learning another language too so shrugs#so yeah i have opinions about linguistics#ichareply#anonymous

idk why i just now thought of this but my elementary art school teacher was genuinely so good at her job and like i did love her then but i don't think i fully appreciated how much she was actually teaching me until years later
#like i've never had much of a knack for actually doing art (not that that stops me)#but i learned a ton about different materials and styles and techniques and color theory and famous artists#like she had 10 year old me checking out mc escher art books from the library#i also remember doing basket weaving and pottery and stamp making in her class????#honestly what is more fun to a child than all of that#and i think maybe it being fun is why i actually remember the information lmao#they should do college art history like that. u don't write an essay on an artist you just try out their style to prove you get it#your term paper is just a pollock style splatter painting#(<- a real and very fun assignment we did)#bri babbles
