Oh, finally someone I can relate to :''''''''')
#it's mostly that I could and did buy a bass guitar BUT I'm too stupid to learn on my own and I couldn't really afford lessons. so#lol it's. pretty much a story of my life that I can afford an one-time splurge but not really something like language classes or something#like that... when I was a kid I liked to dance or sing or draw and I always wanted to play an instrument of sorts but I could never do it#because my parents had no money and I guess it just... idk. Didn't occur to me that I could like try to get a job or save money or yknow#Do My Best To Follow My Dreams like all those artists do? so I can't do anything#honestly today it hit me how like... stupid I am... I'm not saying this as an insult but like. an objective trait#because you've got all those people who work hard to do what they want to do and follow their interests and they're ABLE to say what those#interests are. but I just... I lack any sort of independant thought... I just Don't Think Ever. I can respond to other people's thoughts bu#I'm just totally devoid of anything on my own. if my thesis advisor didn't suggest something I genuinely wouldn't have known what to#write my thesis about because every single person had an area of interest ASIDE FROM ME. I'm just. stupit#I keep on thinking about trying out an instrument again but I know I won't get far anyway so it would be just another waste of money#BUT LIKE. IT'S LIKE THIS WITH EVERYTHING I never managed to get justifiably Good at anything even if I practiced#it's honestly impressible how much of a cringefailguy I am? because usually people either have hobbies they're really passionate and/or#knowledgeable about or they're really good at something. Even if it's not a super flashy and Obviously Cool person you find out that they#make kickass soup or collect stamps or love skiing or have retained a lot from their childhood horsegirl phase. not me!!!#it's so sad it's honestly funny. though i guess you can say my Thing is my brain being unmeasurably immune to knowledge#shrimp thoughts

some stuffs abt her
she was part of some bands but only for a short while when events are held, she got paid for being the guitarist, vocalist, and drummer.
learned how to play a guitar when she was young, her mother taught her before she passed from an illness- which she believed.
she's very self-conscious about her works and actions, pretty much insecure but had to force herself anyway just to get things done lol.
she had a little intermission to sol, alone. she taught him how to hold a guitar and strumming chords.
she draws very often, like A LOT until she gets drained and tired- and then she starts to hate them.
not tkatb related but she'll be my m/c for some vn's as well (might make a reference soon)

tibby you have no idea how much i want you to just straight infodump about kyle (huge monweek fan & i love his whole aesthetic) so im just sitting here waiting for more stuff
GODDD DUDE ive been so fixated on our campaign and its only been three sessions clenches fist. Ill yap under the cut
So the campaign takes place in 2009 in a small town in Illinois called Hollowbrook. Kyle was born & raised there, very normal upbringing, mom dad & little brother living in ur typical cozy cul-de-sac home, he's a pretty outgoing and rebellious kid though. Likes doing stupid shit like going to parties in the woods and breaking his arm doing skating tricks and going to the junkyard and smashing stuff for fun. Plays guitar badly in his garage. Goes to the local comic shop to talk nerd stuff like pokemon and world of warcraft and whatever.
6 months before the campaign takes place, Kyle is out in the woods with his younger brother Liam one night. Growing up, they've both been pretty interested in supernatural stuff and mythological creatures, so it's not uncommon for them to hang out there looking for bigfoot or whatever for fun. However, something goes wrong, something strange/magic happens, Liam goes missing and Kyle is witness to it all. He tells everybody what he saw, but no one believes him.
This sends Kyle on a pretty bad spiral for the next few months. The trauma of your younger brother going missing right before he's about to graduate high school, knowing you saw Something but nobody believes you, continuing to search for the truth while everyone slowly begins to move on. Kyle quickly becomes a lot more reckless and obsessive. He takes a semester off community college because he can't focus on school at all. He dedicates all of his time to one purpose and it's getting his brother back. He spends his days online at deep web forums discussing cryptids and magic, and at night he heads out to the woods to look for clues or creature sightings. He notices the forest is a little strange at night, but besides that, not many leads.
Only very recently does he meet the other three members of the party and discover the Hideaway, a magical portal that connects their world to a mirror dimension full of magic and mythical creatures. Kyle is convinced that this has to be where Liam went, and with a new lead & a team of chucklefucks he can continue to work towards that goal. :J Kyle's playbook is The Expert. He's the only player character who's lived in Hollowbrook his whole life so he knows pretty much everything there is to know about it. His casual interest in cryptids over the years + his recent obsession with it makes him pretty knowledgeable about that stuff as well. He doesn't have any magic abilities of his own (yet, that i know of?) but he wants to help the other three learn more information about the nature of their abilities, hoping that solving their mysteries may bring him closer to learning more about where Liam could have gone.
I'll share art I've done of Liam soon bc there is a Lot :J Towards the end of last session, Kyle revealed to the party that he's looking for his younger brother who went missing, however they haven't had time to discuss this in detail yet, so they haven't seen any photos of him or anything (Kyle keeps a lot of photos on his camera & printed out though lol. Also all of the characters have 100% seen Liam's face without realizing because Kyle has been putting up missing person posters everywhere)
soooo yeah thanks for being interested in my guy teehee i already have like 50+ drawings ive done of him in a month urm
i tag hollowbrook hideaway stuff as hh and there will be more stuff on my main blog where i rb other peoples art of their characters as well

SONIC 3 MAJOR SPOILERS!!!
PLEASE DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE FILM
My Sonic 3 Review:
Opening the film with Shadow waking up to memories of Maria I am SICK
Maria... was playing... Live and Learn... on guitar... omg... my heart...
OZZY'S "You stole my hoomans!" LMAOOOOOO
The fact that when Sonic says to Tom "I don't know what I'd do without you, I'd probably be a completely different hedgehog", they cut to Shadow - that is PEAK cinematography!
SHADOW ON HIS MOTORBIKE!!!
BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY AGENT STONE ON A MOTORBIKE HELLO???
Tails wanted to go the chao garden he is so adorable I love him so much 😭 and the look on his face when they start performing he's just a little guy 🥺
THE WAY THE CHAO WERE RUNNING ABOUT WHEN THE CHAO GARDEN WAS ATTACKED WAS SO FUNNY
Eggman watching telenovelas is so accurate actually
Agent Stone is just so in love isn't he? In fact the Stobotnik scenes in this film were some of my favourite scenes - Lee Majdoub you're amazing
Keanu Reeves was AMAZING as Shadow
Shadow looked so scared when he was put in the tank and it was filling with water poor baby 🥺
One thing that was NOT on my Sonic 3 bingo chart was COMMANDER WALTERS FUCKING DYING??? THEY KILLED THE OLIVE GARDEN GUY???
Maria drawing a bunny face over Shadow in the tank she is so precious I love them both so much 😭
The little montage of Shadow and Maria hanging out made me SICK (in a good way) especially that scene when he's running through the halls pulling her behind him on her rollerskates LOL
NOOOOO SHADOW YOU'RE NOT AN ALIEN FREAK DON'T LISTEN TO THAT STUPID MOVIE
"There's still light, even when the star's not there anymore" okay so I'm just gonna cry into my popcorn now thx
Stone calling Tails adorable he is so real for that
Eggman saying that he's "undesirable to all possible genders" 🤨🏳️🌈 'whoa he's bisexual I didn't know that!'
Speed reference!
"It's like we're in a movie and we're both being played by the same actor! *Slowly stare into camera*" That fourth wall break was BRILLIANT
I can't decide whether Tom's puppet of himself is absolutely hilarious or absolutely terrifying
The montage of Eggman and Gerald lol! (but poor Stone was left out ☹️)
The entire London break-in scene was great! Especially when Knuckles finally got to break the glass!
REVENGE GUAC
Can we take a minute to appreciate the complete contrast between Gerald saying "a WOMAN in the MILITARY 😒" and Shadow saying that the girl in the telenovela should kill both the guys fighting over her because she's "not a prize to be won"?
Also Shadow watching a telenovela and telling the girl to kill both guys is so accurate LMAO he really said 'YOU LEAVE THAT LATINA ALONE!'
Ngl for a hot second I GENUINELY thought Tom was dead that was SCARY
Are we gonna talk about the fact that Gerald and Shadow were ready to kill themselves if it meant getting revenge?
The way Shadow's face changes and he flashbacks to Maria when he sees Sonic knelt next to Tom begging him to wake up... The parallels between Sonic and Shadow in this film... Oh my goodness...
Sonic getting mad enough to steal the Master Emerald from Knuckles was also NOT on my Sonic 3 bingo chart - I thought we were gonna see them fight each other for a sec which was CRAZY
I'm not the biggest Wade fan but Sonic effortlessly taking the Master Emerald from him and him replying "well I tried" was comedy GOLD - all that training in the Knuckles series for nothing huh 😂
Sonic turning super for vengeance purposes oh my goodness...
Maria's death scene really gave me goosebumps - the way Commander Walters shouts "don't shoot they're children!" - the way Shadow's face changes when he sees Maria dead - the way Gerald was crying...
I think it really says a lot about G.U.N that in this version, they didn't even shoot Maria but they were still actively responsible for her death - that officer DID shoot and he DID try and aim at Maria and that explosion WAS caused by him
Obviously I hate G.U.N but I actually feel kinda bad for Walters now like he really did try to save her didn't he 🫤
Both Gerald and Walters refer to Maria AND Shadow as children which I appreciate cuz it shows how young Shadow really was when everything went to hell for him - he's just a baby your honour he didn't MEAN to blow up earth 🥺
Sonic attacking Shadow in super form was just... WOW! He was REALLY angry wasnt he?
SUPER SONIC VS SUPER SHADOW??? HOLY SHIT!!! THAT BATTLE WAS EPIC!!! 🤯
Sonic almost killing Shadow over him almost killing Tom was a really great way to relate Sonic and Shadow's stories - Sonic coming around when Shadow points to his heart, thinking about what Tom said at the start of the film parallelling Shadow then coming around after remembering what Maria said to him... This is one hell of a film!
Sonic and Shadow watching the sun come up together as Shadow repeats what Maria says about light and stars 😭
"Don't tell me you've got a catchphrase..." "Yep, and everyone loves it!" Another fourth wall break that did NOT disappoint.
LIVE AND LEARRRRRN!!! HANGING ON THE EDGE OF TOMMOROW— 🎶
THEY DID THE SA2 POSE!!! I REPEAT, THEY DID THE SA2 POSE!!! AND IN SUPER FORM TOO!!!
Did they just... fucking... incinerate Gerald... wtf.... RIP I guess...
Shadow attacked those robots with SUPER CHOAS SPEARS in one scene!!! Which is AWESOME!!!
Eggman switching sides cuz even he knows blowing up the world is a bad idea 👍
I could go on and on and on about the Super Sonic and Super Shadow scene IT WAS SO GOOD!!!
Sonic falling to earth gave me a heart attack. Tails then falling to earth whilst trying to save Sonic also gave me a heart attack. Knuckles going to save them both making me think he was also gonna fall to earth gave me a third heart attack.
The way I physically leaned forward in my seat when Shadow took off his inhibitor rings—
They pissed on the moon.
We've seen Shadow smile so much in this film and it is SO refreshing to see! That smile right before he and Sonic team up to attack those robots Gerald sends after them is my favourite smile we've ever seen on him.
Eggman dedicated his last speech before dying to Stone 😭😩🥹 AND STONE SAYING "I CAN'T LOSE YOU AGAIN" THEY BETTER KISS IN THE NEXT FILM I SWEAR—
Team Sonic hug 🥹
Ending on the race was perfect (bonus points for Ozzy barking with subtitles again because that was HILARIOUS)
WE GON RUN IT RUN IT RUN IT TILL WE RUNNING OUTTA ROAD 💃💃💃
OMG AMY! AMY AMY AMY OH MY GOODNESS AMY! HELLO AMY! I'VE MISSED YOU SWEET AMY! AMY AMY AMY AMY AMY AMY!!! I GOT SO EXCITED WHEN I SAW THAT HAMMER! AMY ROSE! HI!!! YOU LOOK SO GOOD!!! AMY AMY AMY!!!
Oh yeah and Metal Sonic.
AMYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!
So great to see that Shadow's NOT dead (although tbf I did kinda expect that - it would've been unlikely that they genuinely kill him off when he's such a popular character)
Honestly I think the END end credits scene was a perfect set up for a Shadow spinoff, like they HAVE to make one now
I also think the two end credits scenes together show that Eggman isn't really dead either - again it would be unlikely for them to kill him off PLUS if Shadow managed to chaos control himself out of there he could've easily gone back for Eggman too (and I mean who else is gonna be responsible for creating Metal Sonic?)
AMY, PEOPLE, AMY!!!
Overall, I think it's pretty clear that I LOVED this film! It was amazing and I'm already excited for the next one lol! ❤️

Any Shadow and Tails hcs?
Sorry this took a minute, anon! I had written up several headcanons a few days ago and then my browser crashed and I lost everything I wrote ^^;; it took a minute to find the motivation to write them up again.
I wasn't sure if you only wanted headcanons of Shadow and Tails in relation to each other, or if you wanted separate ones for them as well, so I tried to think of a little of both!
Shadow:
Though black coffee is his drink of choice, Shadow also enjoys a cup of rooibos tea when he's looking for something a little more relaxing. Decaffeinated coffee doesn't quite do it for him. And he only drinks his coffee hot. He judges Rouge whenever she gets an iced latte.
He's very good at painting nails, but only Rouge knows this. She's the only one he'll offer to do it for - and it's always in exchange for something like intel or tech. He learned how for the bad days where Maria couldn't keep her hands steady and got frustrated. He'd paint her nails so she could feel pretty.
Shadow likes Barry Manilow (this is mostly a joke xD …mostly). But seriously, I do think he enjoys listening to a wide variety of music though. He was limited to what tapes they had on the ARK, a lot of it whatever the scientists and Maria liked listening to, so he enjoys experiencing different genres of music just to get a feel for them. He doesn’t necessarily like all music, but there’s something to be said for just experiencing it, even if he doesn’t like it. He’s also intrigued by live music, especially since Maria was just starting to learn to play guitar when her parents sent one up with the supply ship for her twelfth birthday. That was the only experience he'd had with live music until arriving on Mobius.
Tails:
Though he drinks coffee, he does it out of pure necessity. His taste buds are still a kid's, after all, so he loads up his caffeine with sugar, flavored syrups, whipped cream, and marshmallows. When he discovers cold brew, he finds that a bit more palatable since the beans aren't made as bitter by the heat when roasting them, but he still needs flavors and cream. He actually prefers energy drinks if he’s looking for a caffeine boost, but coffee makes him feel more grown-up. Yes, even with the marshmallows.
He doesn’t read as much fiction as Sonic, but he does have a pretty large collection of comic books and graphic novels. There are some series he’s followed since he was little, which offer a bit of stability/familiarity for him when not much was a constant in his life aside from Sonic and fighting Eggman.
When he was little, Tails begged Sonic to teach him guitar. He was quickly embarrassed though, because it wasn’t something he took to naturally. They made a little progress, but as he got older he stopped asking for lessons as much, so Sonic assumed he lost interest. But sometimes when he knows Sonic’s not going to be around for a while, Tails will take out the guitar and practice by himself, though he never tells Sonic about it.
Shadow and Tails:
Shadow doesn’t actually have beef with Tails. When Team Dark came across Team Sonic in Sonic Heroes for the first time since the events of SA2 and started fighting, Shadow identified Tails as their aerial support and would save his teammates from falling into the jungle river. He also picked up on the fact that Sonic’s battle tactics focused primarily on protecting his team, and that he was holding back from full-out attacking Shadow. Part of him wanted to see that blue hedgehog’s full potential, though he couldn't really pinpoint why at the time. So it was a strategic decision to take out Tails first by kicking him in the head, nothing personal.
Scratch that, Shadow does have beef with him whenever he catches Tails drinking cold brew (this is also a joke lol, if he didn't fight the kid over putting marshmallows in his coffee, he's not gonna fight him over cold brew).
Tails has better accuracy than Shadow with a firearm, but Shadow is a quicker draw and has a faster reaction time. They both prefer to use non-lethal ammunition as a method of stunning opponents, though the Tornado and Cyclone do have lethal weaponry systems, however, since Tails often needs as much firepower as possible when going against Eggman’s air fleet. But those are just robots, so it's okay!
Tails is one of the few people who knows Shadow’s “birthday,” or at least, his “creation day.” He learned it by going through G.U.N.’s files when Amy asked him to, because she really, really wanted to know when his birthday was. He only looked it up after she promised not to throw a party for Shadow (she wasn’t going to, Tails, she just wanted to get him a card and a little gift!). Rouge is the only other person who knows his birthday - also from G.U.N.’s files - but she knows Shadow doesn’t want to be fussed over too much, so keeps everything low-key as well.
I think that's enough for now! I feel like I'm not as good at writing up headcanons independently as I am incorporating them into fics, but I hope this was along the lines of what you were looking for, anon! If you have more specifics hcs you're curious about, let me know :)
Thank you for the ask!
#skimming asks#miles tails prower#shadow the hedgehog#sonic headcanons#I really like a lot of details that came from TMoSTH - like Shadow agreeing to Hot Honey concert and Tails drinking coffee with marshmallow#so definitely incorporated those elements into my headcanons for them#the “beef” thing is also adapted for the games since every example of Shadow attacking Tails is from other media that I don't use in my fic#at least not my main picket fence timeline fics#prime and movie fics are their own thing#long post

Hello!! Could you do headcanons of the fellowship + Faramir and what art they like/do as a hobby? Like painting, music, knit, and so on. Thank you!!
I was working on this but it got pushed to the back as I try to prioritize asks so this is perfect!
Hobbies of the fellowship (+Faramir)
Aragorn:
-Whittling
-He has a lot of downtime during his time as a ranger
-And he is surrounded by sticks and stuff and was probably already fiddling with a knife
-He often doesn’t take the little animals he makes with him so he either gives them to kids in a village he is near, or just leaves them around for someone to find
-I can also imagine him keeping a guitar with him so he can play around a fire at night during his travels
-A very humble player but also not shy about playing or singing if asked
Legolas:
-Anything physical really
-Climbing, swimming, gymnastics, etc
-He just needs to be moving
-He also has a habit of taking in orphaned or injured animals to nurse them back to health
-Would just have a squirrel in his pocket like Bob Ross
-His father has had to tell him multiple times that bunnies are not allowed on the dinner table
Gimli:
-He plays the flute
-Don’t ask how I know because no one will ever see him playing
-But he does
-He also enjoys jewelry making
-He’s a dwarf who appreciates a pretty piece of metal work or a perfectly shiny jewel
-I have an uncle who will sharpen knives at family gatherings because he doesn’t really want to talk to anyone (and I can’t blame him) but he also loves glitter and stuff, and that’s loosely how I picture Gimli
Boromir:
-I love that you mentioned knitting because that is exactly what I picture this man doing
-He’s not particularly good, but also not bad
-Mostly just makes scarves to relax
-Faramir has so many scarves and hats
-He definitely donates the extras that aren’t given to his brother
-Side note, he cannot crochet despite trying to
Frodo:
-Learning languages
-We know he has learned elvish to an extent and I think that this is a passion of his
-Loves to teach his friends “swears” that are actually compliments
-He also likes making origami
-Nothing too extravagant, just little cranes and stars maybe
-But he makes so many he doesn’t know what to do with them
-He will hide little cranes all around the shire for other hobbits to find
Sam:
-I mean this one is obvious…
-He loves gardening!
-He feels so accomplished when he gets to watch his plants grow, and eat fresh food from the ground
-Potatoes
-I also think he would secretly enjoy writing poetry
-I’m pretty sure Bilbo taught him how to read and write and he makes sure to put it to use so he doesn’t forget how
-He may not be Shakespeare but it is always sweet and from the heart
Merry:
-Riding
-He loves to take his pony around the shire
-He also likes experimenting with cooking and drink making
-It’s not always good, in fact it often isn’t, but it’s the process to him that matters
-If he were in modern days he would love the movie Ratatouille
Pippin:
-He is a very musical hobbit
-When he’s not stuffing his face he’s playing instruments and singing at the Green Dragon
-I also think he would really love making pottery
-The feel of molding the clay on the wheel really quiets his mind which frankly he really needs from time to time
Gandalf:
-Ok hear me out
-Ik this isn’t technically really a hobby but he likes napping
-He wants to find the most peaceful spot and just close his eyes for a little
-He’s a man who is always on the move so being able to take time to relax is always important to him
-(One of my favorite things to do is take a nap on the couch with my cats and I’m insistent that this is a hobby lol)
*Bonus Faramir:
-I think he likes to draw
-He doesn’t really paint, but he likes to sketch with charcoal and pencils
-He carries around a little sketchbook so he can just sit somewhere and draw
-Boromir loves to see his brothers art because he is so proud of his little brother

Certified McLennon: a playlist
With receipts.

Side 1
1. I Want To Hold Your Hand (1963)
We wrote a lot of stuff together, one-on-one, eyeball to eyeball. Like in ‘I Want To Hold Your Hand’, I remember when we got the chord that made the song. We were in Jane Asher’s house, downstairs in the cellar playing on the piano at the same time. And we had, ‘Oh you-u-u… got that something…’ And Paul hits this chord and I turn to him and say, ‘That’s it!’ I said, ‘Do that again!’
— John Lennon, 1980 (x)
Eventually I ended up living with the Ashers. I'd already stayed over quite a bit, but Margaret must have said, 'Well, you know, we'll let you have the attic room. So I ended up there, and they got a piano up in that room.
When John came to visit, there was a piano in the basement as well - a little music room where I think Margaret took students. So, we would write there in the basement, both on the piano at the same time, or eyeball to eyeball on our guitars.
'I Want to Hold Your Hand' is not about Jane, but it was certainly written when I was with her. To tell you the truth, I think we were writing more to a general audience. I may have been drawing on my experience with a person I was in love with at the time - and sometimes it was very specific - but mostly we were writing to the world.
— Paul McCartney, 2021 (x)
How else to begin the narrative but with a genuine Lennon-McCartney cowrite that fired the starting gun on global scale Beatlemania? Famously written "eyeball to eyeball" - and sung in unison pretty much throughout - we must also presume, sitting at the piano side-by-side as they were, their hands were in rather close quarters too.
As for Paul's extract: So I moved in with my girlfriend’s family // (new paragraph) John John John and I writing this song // (new paragraph) To be clear, this song is NOTHING to do with my girlfriend at the time whose house I was living in, but it maybe was to do with someone else I was in love with (in a very specific way) but I am not going to say who it that is. Paul, do you ever hear yourself. Any chance it's the boy pressed against your side for hours and hours telling you to do that again?
2. Cafe On The Left Bank (1978)
When John and I hitchhiked to Paris in 1961, we went to a café on the Left Bank, and the waitress was older than us – easy, since John was turning twenty-one and I was nearly twenty. She poured us two glasses of vin ordinaire, and we noticed she had hair under her arms, which was shocking: ‘Oh my God, look at that; she’s got hair under her arms!’ The French would do that, but no British – or, as we would later learn, American – girl would be seen dead with hair under her arms. You had to be a real beatnik. It’s such a clear memory for me, so it was in my head when I was setting this scene.
— Paul McCartney, 2021 (x)
lol @ Paul erasing a good eight months of age difference here for absolutely no clear reason. ‘nearly twenty’ my left eye
Indisputably a song inspired by John and Paul's 1961 trip to Paris together (and also, I suppose, a woman with Armpits of Note, living in Paul McCartney’s head for seventeen years rent-free). John inherited £100 from a wealthy relative just ahead of turning 21 and promptly 1) cancelled several gigs the band had booked, much to the rest of the band’s irritation 2) took Paul and no-one else to Paris for a fortnight. They stayed in a cheap hotel in Montmartre (just the one single bed) and have pretty much never shut up about it since (x). More information on the trip and some photos Paul took of John are available on tumblr (x) and elsewhere (x).
Here because I could not leave Paris unrepresented, and because if the line touching all the girls with your eyes isn't an observation laced with considerable jealousy, it is at the very least a keen awareness of exactly what John's eyes were up to at any given time.
3. If I Fell (1964)
It’s semi-autobiographical, but not that conscious, you know. It’s really about – it’s not about Cyn, my first wife…
— John Lennon, 1980 (x)
One of John’s earliest ballads that he has specifically identified as not just being a chart-topping songwriting exercise with no personal meaning behind the curtain. If I Fell 1) doesn’t really match up with any of his known romantic relationships at the time 2) has some fairly ambiguous ‘whose point of view is this from exactly?’ going on. (Boy with girl entering a second/new relationship? Or someone wanting someone who’s already got a girl? Either way, the only pronoun we’ve got for sure in this song is that of the third party.)
More points raised (by another tumblr user) here (x).
(General note: early Beatles-era lyrics - like If I Fell and I Want To Hold Your Hand - ARE difficult to definitively pin down, being as they were often written to order/generic for a general audience/more likely to be any phrase that fitted the tune rather than personally meaningful/overall more commercial and less specifically autobiographical. But it was a time filled with intense and genuine songwriting collaboration. And we are not going to start this playlist in 1969, okay.)
4. I Will - Take 29 (1968)
When I’m writing, it’s as if I’m setting words and music to the film I’m watching in my head. It’s a declaration of love, yes, but not always to someone specific. Unless it’s to a person out there who’s listening to the song. And they have to be ready for it. It’s almost definitely not going to be a person who’s said, “There he goes again, writing another of those silly love songs.
— Paul McCartney, 2021 [on ‘I Will’] (x)
He won’t? Yes he will, ready or not.
(John’s the Silly Love Song mocker-in-chief; yet another romantic song from the Jane Asher era that Paul (in The Lyrics) has specified is not about Jane Asher. Jane, you deserved better.)
(Not the only improv fun on record for I Will, either (x).)
5. In My Life (1965)
I think ‘In My Life’ was the first song that I wrote that was really, consciously about my life… a remembrance of friends and lovers of the past… and it was, I think, my first real major piece of work.
— John Lennon, 1980 (x)
Specifically ‘consciously’ autobiographical, according to John, In My Life’s lyrics include an ambiguous conflation (or at least a lack of differentiation) between lovers and friends, friends and lovers. An earlier draft is more of a straightforward nostalgic longing for physical places in Liverpool left behind (scroll down to ‘about’ to read these lyrics - x), whereas the final version is a clear elevation of the singer’s current love, and the present more widely, over those places and people he remembers, however important they seem within his memory.
Written in late 1965, John had not yet met Yoko Ono and was still married to Cynthia. Again, nobody (else) for this autobiographical song quite fits timeline-wise. More thoughts (from another tumblr user) here (x).
Intriguingly, the official John Lennon Instagram account has matched up In My Life’s lyrics with John and Paul (x), (x).
6. Oh! Darling (1969)
When you told me // You didn't need me anymore // Well, you know I nearly broke down and cried
Paul to John, as John’s intense relationship with Yoko begins and The Beatles begin to end. Maybe.
Sonically, this one’s a 50s-retro belter that harks back to the kind of rock 'n' roll John and Paul would have been listening to and learning to play together as teenagers.
I have rejected some other sometime-heard lyrics elsewhere in this playlist, but it really, really sounds like Paul sings Oh, Johnny instead of Oh, darling at 2:47. What more do you want, really.
Sidenote: although this song is written by Paul, John wanted to sing it - because, he says, he could have done a better job of singing it than Paul(!) (x). There is a version where they sing it together (kind of) on Anthology 3 (x).
7. Fine Line (2005)
Whatever's more important to you // You've got to choose what you wanna do
There is a long way between chaos and creation // If you don't say which one of these you're gonna choose
Come on brother, all is forgiven // We all cried when you were driven away // Come on brother, everything is better // Everything is better when you come home and stay
Come on back, come on back // Come on back to me
Paul has not elucidated on the meaning of this one too much - his 2005 explanation veers quickly away from lyrical content and towards the musical composition (x) - but there are clear themes present of divided friends, close yet conflicting creative approaches and priorities, and a longing for reconciliation.
This one gets me right in the heart, especially the come on back to me bit.
8. Two of Us (1970)
It’s like you and me are lovers.
— John Lennon to Paul McCartney, 1969 (x)
It’s like we’re like a couple of queens.
— John Lennon to Paul McCartney, 1969 (x)
alright John, that’ll do, I think we get it now.
This one’s definitely Paul being inspired by romantic countryside drives with his soon-to-be-wife, Linda Eastman (x). (And/or late-night drives around London with same (x).) However, it’s also about John and Paul, most notably when it being about Paul and Linda doesn’t fit.
For sending postcards, in The Lyrics (2021) Paul mentions both Linda and John. You and me burning matches, lifting latches? This recalls smoking and drinking in Liverpool pubs (‘lifting the latch’ being scouser slang for paying for your first drink so that others will buy your drinks in future rounds (x)). You and I have memories // Longer than the road that stretches out ahead would be very pessimistic for a new romantic relationship. You and me chasing paper, getting nowhere suggests the Beatles’ business troubles and how they lead to arguments/lack of resolution rather than anything to do with Linda.
Besides Paul specifically saying that we’re on our way home is about “trying to get in touch with the people we once were” (!) moreso than literally travelling home, the Everly Brothers-style harmonies and some good old shared microphone singing make this another song from the Get Back sessions that musically recalls the past, nostalgia; where John and Paul started, together.
Version note: I chose the 2021 mix for this one (rather than the Let It Be… Naked version) to include John’s stupid Charles Hawtrey bit at the start (added in later from a 1970 session, when the song itself was recorded in January 1969), but it was a close-run thing tbh. Sub in the Naked version if you prefer it.
9. Too Many People (1971)
I was looking at my second solo album, Ram, the other day and I remember there was one tiny little reference to John in the whole thing. He’d been doing a lot of preaching, and it got up my nose a little bit. In one song, I wrote, “Too many people preaching practices,” I think is the line. I mean, that was a little dig at John and Yoko. There wasn’t anything else on it that was about them. Oh, there was “You took your lucky break and broke it in two.”
— Paul McCartney, 1984 (x)
Ah, the beef period: the one time when it’s incredibly easy to verify that these were indeed songs written about each other. (Still, check this page (x) to follow Paul becoming slightly more and more honest about this song over time to see how difficult it is to pin him down on any exact meaning in the majority of cases.)
Yoko took your lucky break and broke it in two became You… by the time the song was released. Piece of (cake) at the start is ‘piss off’, directed at John. The final verse is about Linda, but only in the sense of Paul showing off to John that he also has a wife now actually! These absolute losers.
This song is all Paul’s anger towards John (and Yoko); it’s not even ambiguous, no matter what Paul might have said in the past.
10. I Found Out (1970)
John, post Beatles and post primal scream therapy, with some advice for others (just don’t call it preaching, okay).
Included for its very un-Beatlesy raw production and I seen religion from Jesus to Paul, which is of course very clever of him and all that but, god. If it’s deeply wronged, it’s also deeply devotional.
11. Riding to Vanity Fair (2005)
[Interviewer: It’s the only song here [in Chaos and Creation in the Backyard] that mentions a trouble not overcome.]
Yeah, an own-up song. Now it’s become more elegant, but it’s still a pissed-off song. When you’re trying to reach out to someone, and it’s rejected, that’s a hurtful thing. That happened to me at a particular point. It wasn’t Heather. It was about some other relationship that I had, and this was my therapeutic way of releasing myself.
— Paul McCartney, 2005 (x)
As a newer McCartney song, that’s the most specific Paul has got on the song’s subject.
The song’s subject is consistent throughout. The singer remembers holding back words from and trying to placate a former friend, says this person no longer needs their help and that they weren’t aware of what they’ve put the singer through, and that friendship was offered but is no longer there. In the past, more optimistic days, they had bonded through music.
Although unique in this little beef period section of the playlist as a song released 35 years after the breakup of The Beatles rather than contemporaneously, it appears to take Paul’s point of view at the time, as this does match up with his frustrated feelings then but not with what he has said and felt about John many years later (particularly after 1980).
A term more famous as a magazine title/novel by Thackeray, ‘vanity fair’ is originally a (fictional) fair described in Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress. In any case, its meaning is also likely here to be a scene or place where only frivolous and empty things like fashion and entertainment are discussed; there are no serious thoughts present. The meaning of this phrase in the song has not been elucidated anywhere, to my knowledge: is Paul saying that none of John’s ‘preaching practices’ at this time were concerned with anything important? Is it a reference to Allen Klein or other untrustworthy associates that John had been spending time with?
Some more thoughts (not mine) here (x).
12. Dear Boy (1971)
So, Paul has said this is not about John - it’s about his relationship with Linda. More recently he has admitted it’s a message to Linda’s ex-husband (which makes logical sense) (x).
I guess it's possible that Paul is lying or bending the truth, as he's sometimes wont to do (seems unlikely here tbh), but this song is primarily included in this playlist because John thought this song was aimed at him. And that compels me.
Through this John-queer lens (if we can call it that), lines like I guess you never knew, dear boy // What you had found and I guess you never saw, dear boy // That love was there are not only rather taunting (and a bit of Paul being conceited too likely thing for him to be) but also suggest that (John thought) Paul was saying John never attained Paul's level of emotional intelligence and clarity about their relationship, that John made a stupid mistake to walk away from Paul's affection. There's the dear boy / dear friend (as Paul's term of address for John - patronising/affectionate) similarity-comparison to consider too.
Then there's And even when you fall in love, dear boy // It won't be half as good as this (!) “This”: Paul and Linda, or Paul and John? (i.e. when you fall in love with a woman - suggesting (John thought) Paul thought he hadn't yet, with Yoko or anyone else - it won't be nearly as good as our relationship, what we had).
I also struggle to see how John could have thought that this song was about him if there was nothing in his head whatsoever that characterised his and Paul's relationship as romantic or intensely comparable to a romantic relationship in some way. Why else would it make sense for Paul to be saying to him no other love will be as good as theirs was/is?
(Okay, there is a heterosexual explanation for this: Paul boasting to John about his amazing perfect relationship with Linda, saying John will never enjoy anything as good. But that’s still. Quite a thing to say to a friend, isn’t it.)
Anyway, John thinking that Dear Boy, and several other songs on Ram, were aimed at him - whether they actually were or not - is probably what goaded him into releasing…
13. How Do You Sleep (1971)
It’s not about Paul, it’s about me. I’m really attacking myself. But I regret the association, well, what’s to regret? He lived through it. The only thing that matters is how he and I feel about these things and not what the writer or commentator thinks about it. Him and me are okay.
— John Lennon, 1972 (x)
Famously, and very directly and explicitly so, John lashing out at Paul.
Some original lines and studio outtakes were even more harsh (x). For his part, Paul seems to have been genuinely hurt by this song despite John’s various later attempts to shrug it off as a kind of knowing public feud with things okay behind closed doors, especially the charge that the only thing you done was Yesterday. (He knows that’s wrong. He knows and I know it’s not true. - Paul, 1971)
A pretty face may last a year or two is so mean, kind of threatening even, and yet also an example of John never missing an opportunity to say Paul… has a pretty face.
14. Dear Friend (1971)
“Dear Friend” was written about John, yes. I don’t like grief and arguments, they always bug me. Life is too precious, although we often find ourselves guilty of doing it. So after John had slagged me off in public I had to think of a response, and it was either going to be to slag him off in public — and some instinct stopped me, which I’m really glad about — or do something else.
— Paul McCartney, 1994 (x)
And then with ‘Dear Friend’, that’s sort of me talking to John after we’d had all the sort of disputes about The Beatles break up. I find it very emotional when I listen to it now. I have to sort of choke it back. I’m not going to cry in front of all you lot though!
— Paul McCartney, 2018 (x)
Dear friend, throw the wine // I'm in love with a friend of mine
Paul ends the feud (in that John never releases a song in response to this, and they do in time start talking again).
There’s a mutability to ‘friend’ here: dear friend is John, I’m in love with a friend of mine the very next line is ambiguous. Both John and Paul were young and newly-wed at the time. The second friend could be Linda, but it’s the same word side-by-side, twins; if it’s John, Paul doesn’t just feel love for him, he’s in love. As this analysis by another tumblr user (x) points out, in all the various quotes where Paul has discussed this song and confirmed it’s about John, he doesn’t mention their respective wives once.
Side 2
15. Best Friend (1972)
Well, I wake up in the morning // I'm still dreaming 'bout you // I'll tell, you pretty baby, I'm blue // I wake up in the evening // I'm still screaming out over you
Tell me why, why // Why do you treat me so bad? // You're the best friend, a man ever had // You're the best friend, a man could ever have
The Paul McCartney Project says this is considered to be a song to John Lennon. There's no citation at that webpage, but I think we can see the vision. (x)
Addressed to a best friend (with complaints of mistreatment), but with lots of morning/nighttime dreaming (x) and screaming and some pretty babys thrown in for good measure. Girl get up, girl more on, etc (he won't).
A year or so ago, John was telling Rolling Stone (1971):
It’s just handy to fuck your best friend. That’s what it is. And once I resolved the fact that it was a woman as well, it’s all right.
(The live version of this song remains the only version available.)
16. Call Me Back Again - Live (1976)
Come on and call me back again
…Tell me, what can I do, what can I do, I can’t get through
The pining continues? Various critics have suggested (x) that this song is aimed at John Lennon.
The timeline certainly fits: Paul wrote the song spring of 1974 in LA, concurrent with John’s time living in LA while separated from Yoko/A Toot and a Snore in '74 (x). Come early 1975, Paul and Linda had dinner in New York with John and May Pang (John’s girlfriend during his eighteen month-long ‘Lost Weekend’ period away from Yoko) and encouraged John to come and visit them while they were recording in New Orleans (x). John then planned to surprise Paul during these sessions for the album that Call Me Back Again appears on (Venus and Mars) (x). However, John never made it: just before leaving for New Orleans, John went to see Yoko and they got back together, bringing the ‘Lost Weekend’ period to an abrupt end. (Yoko got pregnant with Sean very soon after.)
As teenagers in post-war Liverpool, Paul and John were unlikely to be on the phone to each other much (even in 1970, only 35% of UK households had their own telephone(x)), but certainly did call on each other’s houses all the time.
Version notes: This version is from the 1976 live album ‘Wings over America’, but the studio version was first released in 1975. I’ve chosen the live version primarily for Paul’s more raw, more desperate, more better vocal. There are some small lyrical differences and, in the live version, plenty of babe, baby-type ad libbing.
In the live version, Paul sings I’ve called your name, child, every night since then. (I’ve seen some claims that he’s singing I’ve called your name, John on this or other live versions (x) but with the best will in the world I simply don’t hear it.) Only in the studio version does Paul sing I’ve heard your name every night since then (rather than I’ve called your house), which in addition to the pretty racy Oh I’ve called your name every night since then brings the song towards something even more sex-and-dreams adjacent (or possibly suggests the subject is a famous person).
17. Jealous Guy (1971)
He used to say, ‘Everyone is on the McCartney bandwagon.’ He wrote ‘I’m Just a Jealous Guy’, and he said that the song was about me.
— Paul McCartney, 1985 (x)
We do only have Paul’s word to go on here, his comment having been made in 1985. (If John said this, he did not appear to say it publicly.) Of course this song could be (and/or) addressed to Yoko, but there’s not really any reason it couldn’t be addressed to Paul. I was dreaming of the past // And my heart was beating fast would certainly point to an association with someone John had known for long enough for them to be in his past (Yoko very much being his present as of 1971). Oh, and John’s jealousy of Paul, particularly professionally, was legion (x).
18. Silly Love Songs (1976)
There were accusations in the mid-1970s – including one from John – that I was just writing ‘silly love songs’.
— Paul McCartney, 2021 (x, x)
I love you…
Paul standing up to the ‘you’re wasting your time on this unserious soppy shit’ allegations. Silly Love Songs stayed at number one for five weeks solid in the US, so, re. what kind of songs people want, McCartney was arguably onto something. (Its chart peak in the UK was only number two - silly love songs are all well and good, but they can’t beat the public’s desire for a novelty parody song about agricultural machinery).
As well as the quote above, in the 1986 book ‘McCartney, Songwriter’ it is phrased as Paul clarifying that the song was actually directed to John Lennon (rather than music critics, as first assumed). The song - the whole song.
John apparently liked this song very much and interpreted it entirely as a message to him, specifically including the ‘I love you’ parts. (x) (in user gswan steve hoffman music forums we trust, very reliable source okay, don’t take this away from me please).
19. I Know (I Know) (1973)
Today I love you more than yesterday // Right now I love you more right now…
And I know it's getting better (all the time) // As we share in each other's minds
An own-up/apology song from John to Paul. Probably. The official John Lennon Instagram account thinks so, anyway (x).
In his 1980 interview with Playboy - the one extensively quoted throughout this post, because John talked about the authorship and meaning of many of his songs in this interview - John only said that this song was just a piece of nothing. Which likely points to this song not being about Yoko, because when a song’s about Yoko he’ll generally shout about it. (I Know (I Know) was recorded in the summer of 1973, just after Yoko kicked him out thereby starting the ‘lost weekend’ period. So Lennon may have (also) been realising some things about that relationship when he wrote the song, because their relationship was clearly not in a good place.)
The song’s Paul references:
The 1971 Wings song ‘Some People Never Know’ is Paul saying some people don’t understand what it means to love (x). I Know (I Know) and its chosen title as a response to this song is a) a song response where John and Paul are in agreement rather than opposition, for a change b) John telling Paul that he does know what it means to be in love.
In a similar vein, I know what I was missing could be in response to I hope you never know how much you missed in (Paul’s 1971 song) Dear Boy.
Today I love you more than yesterday (in light of Paul’s song Yesterday and John’s Yesterday taunt in 1971’s How Do You Sleep)
And I know it's getting better (all the time) (Getting Better, 1967, Beatles-era McCartney-led cowrite)
No more crying (a possible response to Oh! Darling’s When you told me // You didn't need me anymore // Well, you know I nearly broke down and cried). Or The Long and Winding Road (Many times I’ve been alone // And many times I’ve cried)
Considering John and Paul’s (particularly John’s) belief that they shared some kind of dream or mind connection, I’m intrigued by the (contradictory?) lines But I never could read your mind and As we share in each other's minds.
Finally, there’s John and Paul’s first joint LSD experience:
Paul and Mal [Beatles Roadie/PA], this time, were full of tales of this here LSD and what it could do… Paul said he and John had had ‘this fantastic thing’; which really wasn’t very informative, so I pressed him to flesh it out. ’Incredible, really, just locked into each other’s eyes … Like, just staring and then saying, “I know, man” and then laughing … And it was great , you know.’
— Derek Taylor [press officer for The Beatles], 1983 (x)
20. Coming Up (1980)
I heard a story from a guy who recorded with John in New York, and he said that John would sometimes get lazy. But then he’d hear a song of mine where he thought, ‘Oh, shit, Paul’s putting it in, Paul’s working!’ Apparently ‘Coming Up’ was the one song that got John recording again. I think John just thought, ‘Uh oh, I had better get working, too.’ I thought that was a nice story.
— Paul McCartney, 1980 (x)
1980 optimism: Paul edition. Potentially these lyrics could be interpreted as offering John help, consistent friendship, and perhaps even studio time. (This reading is strengthened by lyrical variations in some of the live versions; see below.)
Oh, and in the music video for the song Paul’s drumkit identified the band (all Paul and Linda, in a 6:1 ratio) as The Plastic Macs (after The Plastic Ono band) (x).
Version notes: It’s the studio version with the vocal distortion that John heard on the radio, liked, and found inspiring (/competitiveness-inducing) enough to want to create songs again - he called it the freak version that [Paul] made in his barn (x) - so that’s the version on the playlist.
The Glasgow live version was more commercially successful, and was the single A-side in the US. Here’s a breakdown of some of the differences between the studio and live versions of the song:
And if you're searching for an answer - 1980 studio version
I know you're searching for an answer - 1979 Glasgow live version (more definitive) (x)
I want to help you find an answer - 1979 Hammersmith live version (more collaborative) (x)
I know that we can get together // We can make it, stick with me - 1980 studio version
I know if we could get together // We'd hear music endlessly - both live version (less imperative, but with a delightful music reference) (this forum post (x) mentions a version with ‘making music endlessly’, which is even more suggestive of being about a musical collaborator, but I haven’t been able to find a version that definitely has this rather than ‘we’d hear’)
The live versions also include some not-uncommon Paul pretty baby I wanna stay-type adlibs. I think the Hammersmith performance is my personal favourite. It goes fast!
21. (Just Like) Starting Over (1980)
But when I see you darling // It's like we both are falling in love again // It'll be just like starting over, starting over
1980 optimism: John edition. More generally, this is John’s increased optimism going into the eighties and the desire to put the difficulties of the seventies behind him.
Within the narrative of Double Fantasy - John’s big comeback album after five homemaking years away from the music business, made with Yoko - it seems like this song must be about John and Yoko, whose relationship was central to promotion of the album and was being portrayed in a particularly idealised way at this time. Were they going through a renewed closeness (implying that even after the ‘lost weekend’ was over their relationship had been going through troubles prior to this renewed closeness)? Or were there difficulties in their relationship during the album release, behind the scenes? (x)
Some possible elements that point to this song being (at least in part) about John and Paul:
The demo version (x), which includes the lyrics The time has come, the walrus said, for you and me to stay in bed again. (John and Yoko bed-in (x)? Or the walrus was Paul (x) / “In bed” (x)?)
The 50s/Elvis/rock ‘n’ roll style of this track evokes where John started, together with Paul. John starts the stripped down remix of this song with This one’s for Gene and Eddie and Elvis and Buddy (x).
When I see you, darling doesn’t necessarily suggest someone you see all the time every day (i.e. your wife).
It's time to spread our wings and fly and Don't let another day go by, my love - Paul’s band, Paul’s songs. Although yes, these are all common phrases regardless.
Whether this is about John’s hope to rekindle his relationship with Yoko, Paul, both or neither, he made it clear that he wanted in 1980 to start over - do better - in a wide variety of aspects. According to John, the song was written with a wider circle (rather than one person) in mind:
I’m not aiming… [the song] at 16-year-olds. If they can dig it, please dig it. But when I was singing and writing this and working with [Yoko] I was visualizing all the people of my age group from the sixties. Being in their thirties and forties now, just like me, and having wives and children and having gone through everything together, I am singing to them! I hope the young kids like it as well, but I’m really talking to the people that grew up with me and saying: “Here I am now - how are you? How’s your relationship going? Did you get through it all? Wasn’t the seventies a drag? You know, here we are, let’s try and make the eighties good, you know, because it’s still up to us to make what we can of it. It’s not out of our control.” (x)
Considering both Coming Up and (Just Like) Starting Over, and the possibility of an eighties Lennon-McCartney reunion: there is one account (x) suggesting John and Paul were planning to spend time in a London studio together in December 1980, then January 1981 when studio availability fell through. This hasn’t been verified elsewhere, although Jack Douglas, the producer of Double Fantasy, does mention in a 2016 interview (x) that both John and Paul had signed on to work on Ringo’s next planned album, with them potentially both planning to attend a January 1981 studio session in New York. Who knows what could have happened if the worst hadn’t.
Time passed. Paul locked the door of his home studio and played (Just Like) Starting Over, the first single from Double Fantasy. Top volume. For days. Christmas came, with its inevitable reruns of Beatles films and other tributes. A fan brandishing a knife tried to break into the McCartneys’ estate. Paul put up more barbed wire and floodlights. A month later, in February 1981, he went back to work.
— Christopher Sandford, in ‘McCartney’ (2006) (x)
22. The Long And Winding Road - Naked Version (1969)
The long and winding road // that leads to your door // Will never disappear, I've seen that road before // It always leads me here, lead me to your door
The only information Paul has really given about writing this song is that he was inspired by a road stretching up into the hills as seen from his newly-purchased farm in the Scottish Highlands (x). Which is certainly a likely inspiration for the road image, but doesn’t give anything away about, like, the deeper meaning of the song.
It’s possible that this verse refers to ‘the night we cried’ in Key West that Paul also mentions in Here Today (1982):
The wild and windy night that the rain washed away // Has left a pool of tears, crying for the day // Why leave me standing here? // Let me know the way
Is this long and winding road a journey of inevitable hardships (written as this was to the background of The Beatles’ late 60s troubles), or a journey home? (We’re on our way home)
Paul really does love a road metaphor in his songs: there’s 2001’s Lonely Road (I hear your music and it's driving me wild // Familiar rhythms in a different style… Don't want to get hurt second time around // Don't want to walk that lonely road again) (x) and then there’s 2013’s Road, which doesn’t appear on this playlist but for me is the key to unlocking The Long And Winding Road (x).
We came from nowhere // Hiding from a storm // We cling together // To keep each other warm
The road to somewhere // Stretches through the night // We follow blindly // Heading for the light
I can't see anymore // The blinding light // It's just a metaphor // I use when things aren't going right
…I′m scared to say I love you // Afraid to let you know // That the simplest of words won't come out of my mouth // Though I'm dying to let them go // Trying to let you know
…I'm still too scared to tell you // Afraid to let you see // That the simplest of words won′t come out of my mouth // Though I'm dying to set them free // Trying to let you see, how much it means to me // How much you mean to me // How much you mean to me now
-
Version notes: this is the version from Let It Be… Naked because this is Paul’s song and he does not want those women’s voices on a Beatles record (x) and because this is an intimate song from one person to another and so I wanted that wall of sound right outta here.
The ‘Naked’ take was recorded several days after the version used in Let It Be (1970), and it has this rather intriguing lyric variation:
Anyway, you’ll never know // The many ways I’ve tried - 1970 Let It Be version
Anyway, you’ve always known // The many ways I’ve tried - 1969 Naked version
John has always known, I think.
23. Here Today (1982)
A love song to John, written very shortly after he died.
— Paul McCartney, 2021 (x)
An imagined conversation, and some shared memories; no ambiguity as to the meaning of the lyrics here.
The night we cried is about a specific event: an approaching hurricane cancelled a planned Beatles concert, meaning the band were stuck in Key West with nothing to do. After a day of drinking a lot with the band and their tour support groups (and throwing up), John and Paul sat in a motel room and had in-depth conversations. Paul has described this as the only time he and John cried together. They held each other and they cried about how much they loved each other. (Telling this anecdote in The Lyrics book ultimately leads to Paul saying we had the most intimate relationship. and I think [those moments like Key West are] what you think about when you lose a friend.)
Many, many other (heartbreaking) quotes, and attribution for Key West, from Paul about this song can be read here (x).
24. On the Way (1980)
Well we've been travelling for a long time // And we finally finished here // Though I said some things to hurt you // Well it was only out of fear
Well you know I'll always love you // Everything will be alright // If I know you don't mind // The things I say // On the way
Bluesy as all hell. Paul hasn’t talked about this one very much.
(Here in the playlist For The Narrative; as this is dated 1980, I should specify for clarity’s sake that this song was written and released before John’s death.)
25. My Brave Face (1989)
Now that I'm alone again // I can't stop breakin' down again // The simplest things set me off again // And take me to that place // Where I can't find my brave face
At least once a tour, that song just gets me.. I’m singing it, and I think I’m OK, and I suddenly realise it’s very emotional, and John was a great mate and a very important man in my life, and I miss him, you know?
— Paul McCartney on performing ‘Here Today’, 2004 (x)
The cover? Circular glasses and a bowler hat (x). (John’s famous glasses; they got “a couple of bowler hats” as their gimmick to attract lifts to hitchhike to Paris in 1961 - you can see them in the bowler hats in some of the Paris photos (x).) The video? A crazed Japanese fan has stolen Paul’s possessions, including Beatles memorabilia and his famous Hofner bass. (Hm.) The collaborator? Hitting the low harmonies alongside Paul’s singing just like John used to, which Paul described as “getting to be too much” (x). Jeez.
(Should be noted that the songwriting for this one is co-credited to Paul and Elvis Costello, Paul’s collaborator for the majority of his 1989 album Flowers in the Dirt. Let’s not take too much of a detour, but one of the reasons Paul gave for wanting to try this collaboration was that both of them shared Liverpool family roots. Their work together was fruitful in terms of output but perhaps it did ‘get a bit much’ after all - they never worked together again. You can find attribution for this and read lots more about Paul and Costello here (x).)
26. This One (1989)
The song is basically a love song – did I ever say I love you? And if I didn’t it’s because I was waiting for a better moment.
— Paul McCartney, 1989 (x)
The ‘I love you’ part was hard to say. A part of me said, ‘Hold on. Wait a minute. Are you really going to do that?’ I finally said, ‘Yeah, I’ve got to. It’s true.’
— Paul McCartney on ‘Here Today’, 1982 (x)
[Interviewer:] Let me ask you about one of your new songs, ‘This One’. About a marriage?
[McCartney:] A relationship, yeah... You get those moments where you always think: "I’m saving it up. I’ll tell him one day." And you know what happens. A lot of people, John for instance, getting back to that subject...
— Paul McCartney, 1989 (x)
27. Now and Then (2023)
Now and then // I miss you // Oh, now and then // I want you to be there for me // Always to return to me
How else to finish but with the final Beatles song?
January 1994, John Lennon’s induction ceremony into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: backstage, Yoko gives Paul cassette tapes of unheard demo material from John. Already working together on Anthology (a TV documentary/album release/book Beatles retrospective) at the time, Paul, George and Ringo built on these demos John had recorded in the late 1970s to create and release ‘Free as a Bird’ and ‘Real Love’ together (x). They worked on a third single, but there were serious quality problems with John’s recording and George wasn’t happy to proceed with it on this basis. (Actually, what he said was is that it sounded “fucking rubbish”. “But it’s John!”, Paul reportedly countered (x).)
But Paul kept mentioning the song in interviews. “One of these days”, he said in 2012, they were going to finish it (x).
And they did.
It’s the sound separation technology Peter Jackson used to create the 2021 Get Back documentary that made Now and Then technically possible, but it’s Paul’s dogged determination sustained over a thirty year period to release this record as a Beatles song that got it out there. John’s last words to Paul in-person, back in 1976, were Think about me every now and then, old friend (x). All the time. All the time.
Bonus Tracks
(Not on Spotify / not written by Lennon and-or McCartney / not otherwise fitting in.)
28. The Lovers That Never Were - 1987 Demo / Geoff Emerick Mix (1987)
All of the clocks have run down. // Time's at an end. // If we can't be lovers we'll never be friends.
For the lyrics and the Beatle-esque harmonies and the raw performance.
(We don’t have much information on who exactly wrote what between McCartney and Costello on any of these shared-credit tracks, but it seems likely from the style of lyrics here that Costello heavily contributed to this one. As I say though, we don’t know for sure.)
29. Just Because (1975)
John’s cover of Lloyd Price’s 1957 hit. (John spent some of his ‘lost weekend’ period recording an album of rock ‘n’ roll covers, initially with Phil Spector producing. Production was, needless to say, troubled.)
For John’s ad lib during the outro of the song, not in Price’s original: There's two basses in this. I hope you appreciate it. Which bassist might John be addressing here?
Then there’s Just Because - Reprise, where John can be heard saying (25 seconds in): I'd like to say hi to Ringo, Paul and George... how are you? (and) Everybody back home, in England... what's cookin'?
There’s also its drunk ‘n’ drugged cousin, Just Because - Rough Mix, which really is a hot fucking mess. Check the tags at the linked post for more conjecture, but John’s certainly pining for someone. Most of these lyrics are not in Price’s original, including Darling I would never // I’d never make nothing without you.
(Bonus to the bonus: John’s cover of The Ronettes’ Be My Baby, also intended for this covers album but left off of the 1975 release. Yes, back in the day The Beatles as a matter of course didn’t swap any pronouns around when performing covers, but (5 minutes in) the I need him here is so desperate-sounding. I won’t tell nobody. I won’t say a word…)
30. I Don’t Know (Johnny, Johnny) (1960)
Two boys, 1960, Forthlin Road.
Aged 17-18 (Paul) and 19 (John), the band (not yet named The Beatles) convened twice at Paul’s place to record rehearsals on a borrowed reel-to-reel tape recorder. Not all of the lyrics are clearly decipherable, but it sure sounds like John and Paul are planning to skip town together and never look back. Let’s hope they make it.
-
A final note (if anyone on Earth has made it this far - hi, and thanks very much for reading): this isn't meant to be a comprehensive list of all McLennon-feasible songs, or unimpeachable ““arguments””! (That's impossible.) This is just a playlist I wanted to make, influenced by what I wanted to write about following a serious research deep-dive, which songs I like listening to, what I personally find most compelling, and what fitted into the playlist order narratively speaking - as its in narrative rather than (purely) chronological order, alternating between Lennon and McCartney whenever viable and beginning and ending on true jointly-written collaborations.
#playlist#the beatles#mclennon#beatles rpf#john and paul#lennon mccartney#Spotify#part narrative playlist part ship manifesto part citation-a-thon part love-letter-ramble#there could have been even more paul songs here tbh but you've got to cut that workaholic off at some point#what if charlie day red string meme but I made it a fun little playlist#this is over seven and a half thousand words somehow

Bon and Bonnie + bonus of Bonnie and Fox in their casual clothes
Ok so I'll admit it, the whole Fox thing is bc of Bonnie (if I do something know I'll always find a way to make it about Bonnie lol)
I made Bonnie a dragon gym trainer for two reasons: the first one, bc I liked the idea of Bonnie being a dragon type trainer (more on that later)*, and the second, bc the uniform fits the color scheme I gave him (know that the pkmn designs are leaning more towards my hc versions of the characters), so from that I made a whole story where Bonnie is a galarian trainer who wants to be very best (or at least the best dragon type trainer).
* the reason I think Bonnie as a dragon type is bc it's like a translation of him being a guitarist in the series, as guitarists are generally considered "cool" and the equivalent in the pkmn universe would be being a dragon type trainer.
Some other things about Bonnie would be that he and Fox are friends bc they traveled together when they did the gym challenge, and stayed friends since that. They are both terrible losers but have to hide it in "official" context, that's why there's another set of reaction in the last drawing :v. Also of them both, Bonnie is the only one who can dynamax his pokemon.
Now to Bon (yay). He's an aspiring musician from Paldea, and as such, he doesn't give much interest in pkmn battles. He's a jolly silly guy who wanders around the world looking for inspiration for his art. He gets lost very frequently and very badly, though he never learns his lesson and says it's "a part of the experience".
Pokemon explanation:
Bon: mainly a plant type
Kricketune: bug that plays music what can I even add. (This one comes from a scrapped idea I had of Bon playing the violin instead of the guitar ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)
Maractus: bc the image of Bon playing the guitar and the maractus dancing along around him at the beat is really cute.
Sunflora: biased bc i like sunkern a lot, and it's a very silly critter that fits Bon vibe imo.
Applin: idk. Some rando gave it to him in one of his trips with no explanation, and he decided to keep it.
Bonnie: dragon type
Fraxure: midway Evo of a big dragon, one of those grinder pseudo legendary. Of course he would want one to show off his skills as a trainer.
Vibrava: midway Evo of flygon. I think flygon is a really great aesthetic match with Bonnie. I even kinda wanted to give the glasses some goggles shape, but the idea is better translated in a picture ig.
Noivern: dragon that fits the aesthetic :p
Goomy: some rando asked him to take care of the lil critter, who then got attached to Bonnie. Bonnie doesn't like that he has to be more careful with goomy than his other pokemon.
#fnafhs#bon fnafhs#bonnie fnafhs#fox fnafhs#theres like a story i want to tell with these guys. very silly too. but it kinda has to wait for a while lol#and yeah it was bonnie the one who gave bon the applin. its a fun silly story of its own. im sillymaxxing over here xd

my goals for the year :)
This will most definitely change. But directionally, here's what we've got:
🌻 Create a garden on my balcony: I've been thinking of growing tomato plants on my south-facing balcony for a couple years now. I've been aspiring towards working with plants. Now I need to go beyond watering a houseplant and wringing my hands when they start killing themselves and dying.
🎨 Paint my coffee table and decorate it: I really enjoyed painting my "community chairs" with my friends last year and they've become one of my favourite things in the apartment. Let's keep going; I got a coffee table off Facebook Marketplace for $25.
📖 Start and finish the Artist's Way: I'd like to get to a point where drawing and writing feel very natural, very joyful, and feels more honest. I'm very used to trying to operationalize my creative process. This probably needs the sort of spiritual healing that people seem to get from Julia Cameron's Artist's Way.
🫂 Make intergenerational friends: I don't hang out with enough babies and I don't hang out with enough grannies. That's a lot of joy and wisdom I'm missing out on! Not to mention delicious food. Plus my skill in being able to connect devices to Wi-Fi is most appreciated by this demographic.
🧘 Find better ways to release stress that actually release stress: I do a lot of activities that are supposed to release stress. But I am still a very stressed person, so I think I'm probably not doing the right things.
✌️Maintain my emotional vibe: Basically regulating my emotions better. Get in tune with urge surfing. But also if I'm feeling joyful, to share it with other people and worry less about its appropriateness.
🦜 Talk to more people whose work I find interesting: I'm shy to talk to people about their work but I want to know what possibilities are out there beyond making slide decks that are marginally interesting and poorly researched lol.
🎹 Pick up music again with guitar or with jamming with my band: I miss that spiky, focused feeling of jamming with other people. I'd also like to do some structured learning of an instrument. Probably piano or guitar.
✏️ Write my blog posts with less polish, more curiosity: More rigor on research, more googling, more interesting examples. Spend more time digging around instead of stuck wondering how to phrase something. Focus less on voice and style. This will come naturally with reading more and taking walks and talking to interesting people.
📚 Study more: I need to read up. I am foolish and not proud of it! I'd like to read more, engage with what I'm reading more, and take some classes. Probably about data analysis and design.
💡Try new things in my career: Writing this blog has been really fun and rewarding, but I think experimenting with other mediums will also be fruitful. Maybe trying out YouTube again or reviving the poetry podcast, or drawing on greeting cards; I just want to try something that I can fuck up and then learn from. I'm also thinking about how my 9-5 job shapes all of this exploration.
🥕 Figure out a food system: Get better at managing the admin / planning side of cooking: groceries, ingredient prep, meal planning, nutrition planning. I feel like I can reduce a lot of my food-related stress by planning more effectively.
I wrote more about this on my substack. And if you'd like to see how I'm keeping track you can check out my Notion template :)

I did it on instagram and I'll do it here too because it's fun and I encourage you to do the same. 😎👍
My fave music discoveries of 2024!
Not necessarily new artists, just me being a slowpoke. I will share the artist, the genre(s), write a bit about them and share a highlight album.
(If anytime I mention "this year" I'm talking about 2024, I just waited till last minute to post this because hey, what if 5 minutes before midnight I discover someone new, you know... spoiler: I didn't though hahah)
In order of discovery as much as I remember, let's GO.
1. Gelka
(downtempo, chillout, electronic)
I love Hungarian music that doesn't have any Hungarian in it. I heard them on the radio and was an instant fave. Listened to them a lot when playing Stardew Valley and when drawing and in... general. Perfect background music that is actually good.
Can't highlight any album mostly because I was listening to their entire discography on loop so I guess uh. Just any of them. Yeag.
2. Agalloch
(atmospheric black/doom/folk metal, post-rock/metal)
The beginning of the year feels like an eternity ago so I'm not sure how I came across them but man I'm glad I did. I'm not good with words but their atmosphere just moves my heart strings in ways unspeakable. The end of Hawthorne Passage never fails to make me tear up.
Highlight album: The Mantle. The album ever. Essential. Beloved.
Runner up: Ashes Against the Grain
3. Alcest
(post-black metal, blackgaze/shoegaze)
Came across them around the same time as Agalloch and ougghhhhhh yeag. I'm normal about them (no). First time I've ever cried to music because of how beautiful it is. Yeah. Yeah that's it.
Highlight album: Les Chants de l'Aurore - their newest album is truly one of if not their best but I also love the two previous ones as well.
4. Kamelot
(power metal)
I had Black Halo saved to listen later and I finally got around to it and damn. What an album. Eventually checked other albums too and confirmed that yep, Kamelot is epic.
So yeah, highlight album: The Black Halo
5. Batushka
(black metal)
Secondhand rec from a mutual (hi ardate ty~) when I saw their imagery and heard that they combined lithurgic chants with black metal... Neuron activation!!!! This is what I wanted from Ghost back in 2018 from their looks but didn't deserve lol. I love that they're ambiguous and vague about their stance on their religious themes. Are they satanic? Are they not? ~Who knows.~ From what I've heard they're definitely blasphemous and that's sexy~
Highlight album: Litourgiya god damn album of the century
6. Children of Bodom
(melodic death metal)
I'm VERY late to check them out I know (I'm still a baby metalhead after all) and I don't even remember what brought me to them but I've been doing nothing but listening to them for a month. Or maybe two at this point. My first song of the year 2025 was Hate Me becuase I had it on loop. I'm also learning Silent Night Bodom Night on guitar because I'm normal. RIP Alexi I love you. Highlight album: It's very hard to check out full albums because each song is so good I gotta loop it for 7 business days, so I can only say Follow the Reaper for now!
-
Bonus: rediscoveries
1. Avatar
(uhh good luck I think they're melodic death metal and alternative metal? yes metal)
First came across them from Ghost Tumblr community back in the day and knew one (1) song and recognized Johannes anywhere but that's it. But then I saw them live and it flipped a switch in me. New obsession!!! They took over my brain for a few months and became top 2 artist in my wrapped oops (top 1 in youtube recap hehe). Ngl I even started learning swedish because of them. Chat no please don't laugh at me-
Highlight album: can't even choose one damn but Hail the Apocalypse is my most listened one.
2. Ensiferum
(folk metal)
Decided to check out more of them since I only knew one song here too and!!!! Hello??? Why did I sleep on them for so long. Learnt Token of Time entirely on guitar and also started learning Windrider but put it on hold because it's out of my league a tiny bit currently fhsfgshd.
Highlight album: Ensiferum (2001) beloved one of my fav albums ever actually, it's so good.
3. Moonsorrow
(folk metal, black metal)
Listened to them a bit last year but really listened more this year so I count then as rediscovery. Almost went to see them live too but chickened out. :( I absolutely love folk and black metal together, so it was destined I'd fall in love with them eventually.
Highlight album: Jumalten Aika because it has my fav song on it and it was the 666th album I've listened to, like of all time. ^_^
4. Windir
(black metal)
This is more like an album rediscovery than anything but 1184 is still so good what the hell. It is everything I want in black metal. I need to check out the other albums too sometime soon...

Hi! Can I ask a romantic matchup with Stranger Things,Doctor Who and The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes? I'm 18,a girl(she/they)I'm bisexual but I would like a male character (female or other is fine too!).
I have short wavy brown hair, hazel eyes,I wear glasses,I'm 164 cm(sorry I'm from Europe),I speak 3 languages (sorry for any mistakes in english its my third lol). I LOVE to read, listen to music, and sometimes write and draw/paint! (I'm currently learning how to play guitar). People always compliment my creativity and writing skills.
I'm an introvert(my MBTI is INTJ),I have very close friends,it usually takes a while for me to open up and for people to know me better. At first I may appear quiet and shy but with my friends I am definitely more open and crazier lol. I loveee history, all the old and vintage things, my fav century is the 19th and decade the 80s. Speaking about the 80s,I love rock music, its my main genre,I mostly listen to 80s rock and I watch series and movies from that time (I have a very close relationship with my dad,he was in his 20s in the 80s). My fav movie is The Blues Brothers and series Doctor Who. I mainly read classics, dystopian, crime novels,sci-fi and fantasy(same genres for movies and series). My fav authors are currently Dostoyevsky and Agatha Christie.
In my childhood I lived in a very small town, and because everyone was basically the same in middle school I was bullied because of my interests, and honestly I'm not that sad about it anymore because it made me mentally stronger, though I still have problems with my social anxiety. Both in middle and highschool I think I was/am the quiet/weird kid? Like I said I love history, books, and I love to study, tbh I think you can consider me a nerd lmao.
Despite the love for books, history and all these classic things I listen to rock, metal,I find very interesting strange and weird things. I think that are the two main parts of my personality, and style too! One day I can dress like a 90s grunge teenager and the other like a dark-academia student. I often combine the two styles,I mainly dress in dark colors. (My fav color is navy blue!)
Sorry,I think I talked too much but I don't get many occasions to share about myself. That's all and thank you if you read all of this! I hope you have a nice day/night!
Hello,
Hope you are doing good!
Don't worry, I loved reading your request :)
I hope you enjoy your romantic matchups!
For Stranger Things, Doctor Who, and The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes!
:)
(I had a LOT of fun with this!)
I also hope you have a nice day/night!

Stranger Things;
Eddie Munson -
You met Eddie during your first week at Hawkins High.
You had transferred from your old high school when you and your family moved.
Moving during senior year, oof.
You were the quiet, bookish kid who kept to yourself, always reading or writing in your notebook.
Eddie, being Eddie, made it his mission to figure out what you were always so absorbed in.
One day, he noticed you reading Dostoyevsky and launched into an exaggerated, theatrical rant about how Crime and Punishment was both brilliant and depressing.
Who knew that Eddie liked Dostoyevsky?
His antics made you laugh, and from that moment, Eddie made it his goal to get you to open up more.
Eddie quickly became fascinated by your creativity and love for books.
He’d ask you endless questions about the plots of your favorite novels, half because he was genuinely interested and half because he loved hearing your voice light up when you talked about them.
Let's just get this straight, I think Eddie was interested in you since the beginning.
You’d attend his Hellfire Club campaigns as a quiet observer at first, but eventually, he convinced you to try playing a character.
Your intricate storytelling made you a hit with the group, and Eddie couldn’t stop grinning when you got into it.
He might swoon when you roll a natural d20.
Late-night music-sharing sessions became a ritual.
Not like what the annoying teens at the high school thought, ya know, with the fire and the sacrificing...
You and Eddie would just sit on the picnic bench, listening to your music in your cassette player.
Eddie would introduce you to obscure metal bands - mostly just Metallica, though - while you’d counter with some rock classics your dad introduced you to.
Eddie would love to help you learn guitar.
He’d patiently show you chords, grinning ear-to-ear whenever you got frustrated because he found your determination adorable.
Yeah, you're pretty lucky, not many people get to touch his baby.
Exploring the woods around Hawkins, pretending to search for “something mysterious,” while secretly just enjoying your company.
You’d both thrift for vintage clothes together, Eddie fully embracing your love for combining dark academia with grunge.
Now, again, Eddie probably already liked you since he saw you, a love-at-first-sight kind of thing.
He, himself is a little bit oblivious to his own feelings for you.
It started with the way you laughed at his terrible jokes and evolved into how you’d quietly support him, like defending him when others called him a freak.
For you, it was the way Eddie always made you feel seen.
He respected your introverted nature but encouraged you to let your creativity shine.
You realized your feelings when you caught yourself doodling Eddie’s name in the margins of your notebook.
(Next to the little doodles Eddie did beside your notes from the one class you shared.)
Eddie confessed during one of your late-night guitar sessions.
You were practicing a riff when he blurted out, “You’re like… The coolest person I’ve ever met, you know that? You're super wicked."
His face turned red when you looked at him, confused. “I’m saying… I think I’m falling for you. Like, really falling.”
Your quiet smile and whispered, “I think I feel the same,” made him grin like a fool.
Good luck getting rid of him now.
Eddie would write songs about you, surprisingly soft compared to his love for metal.
He would also write you metal songs, though.
He’d be your biggest cheerleader, attending any event where you showcased your art or writing.
Movie marathons became your thing, especially rewatching The Blues Brothers.
Eddie loved how you could quote it word for word, and he’d occasionally jump up to reenact scenes with you.
Eddie would leave little notes in your notebooks, scribbled with messages like “Eddie Munson was here."
(He may have noticed his name on the margins of your notebook, finding it cute that you wrote down his name with hearts so many times.)
Lazy weekend mornings in bed, sharing coffee or tea, and debating which Doctor Who companion was the best.
He’d surprise you with vintage finds, like an old leather-bound book he stumbled upon, saying, “It reminded me of you.”
Eddie will defend you fiercely against anyone who tries to make you feel small, even if you insist you don’t need him to.
He knows that you can fight your own battles at times, but he is always there for you no matter what, and if someone is mean or rude, he won't stay quiet.
He learns about your favorite historical eras so he can impress you with random facts.
He would try his best and spoil you, whether that be in affection or gifts.
Eddie crafts personalized D&D campaigns based on your favorite novels, making you the star of the story.
You also help him organize his Hellfire campaigns, giving him advice on how to make the storylines even more gripping and fun.
You make him mixtapes of songs you think Eddie would like - despite them not being Metallica - with little notes explaining why you chose each track.
You write him short stories where he's the hero, complete with fantastical adventures and a heavy metal soundtrack that you played for him on the guitar.

Doctor Who;
The 9th Doctor -
You met the Doctor while exploring an old, seemingly abandoned building that had piqued your interest for its vintage charm. Turns out, it wasn’t abandoned - it was a temporary base for the Doctor.
Why is there a blue police box here?
He was impressed by your curiosity and how you weren’t immediately scared by the strange blue police box or the alien tech inside.
It's bigger on the inside.
The Doctor adored your love for history and would take you on adventures to see the events and figures you’d read about.
Watching you marvel at the past gave him joy.
Look at that, you are the Doctor's new companion. How does that make you feel?
Prepare for a lot of running!
He loved your wit and dry humor, often quipping back and forth with you during downtime in the TARDIS.
Travel to the 19th century to meet Dostoyevsky, with the Doctor teasing you about being “starstruck” by the writer.
Spend hours in the TARDIS library, the Doctor showing you books from across the galaxy while you introduce him to Earth classics.
Have endless debates about the best periods, with you arguing for the elegance of the 19th century and him countering with alien civilizations from the future.
He just has to prove his point by taking you to a few of them.
For the Doctor, it was seeing how you embraced the wonder of time travel while never losing your intellectual curiosity.
He loved how bright your eyes got when he took you to new and exciting worlds.
He loved how you'd laugh when he said something that he thought only he'd find funny.
He...
He was scared.
He was the Doctor.
A Time Lord.
Falling for you...
For you, it was the way the Doctor always made you feel like an equal, despite his centuries of knowledge.
He listened to you, valued your input, and never made you feel small.
On top of that, he never lost his love for adventure, learning, and life after all the years of him being alive, and all the years of visiting new places and meeting new people.
He never lost that love.
And he wasn't that hard on the eyes either ;)
The Doctor confessed indirectly, as was his way.
After a particularly rough adventure, where you were captured, the Doctor thought he was going to lose you...
There were no words, just your eyes meeting his worried and concerned ones.
There was this... This silent understanding.
You could see it in his eyes.
You could feel it when he held you to him protectively.
You could hear it in his voice...
It starts off slow at first but the Doctor shows his affection through actions: ensuring your safety during adventures, tailoring trips to your interests, and occasionally doing something sweet, like bringing you a bouquet of alien flowers.
I mean, nothing really changed, except that there is more... Romantic affection.
You’d balance him out, grounding him when his emotions got the better of him.
When he gets a bit too heated when talking to an alien, you're there to bring him back with a hand on his arm.
And if he is feeling a bit of that green called envy, when he sees Jack talk to you, you're there to let him know that you love him.
Quiet nights in the TARDIS, reading side by side while soft rock played in the background.
The Doctor would surprise you with gifts from different periods, like a navy blue coat from 19th-century France.
Sharing a cup of tea while he tinkered with the TARDIS and you doodled in your sketchbook.
Take you to see rare and beautiful sights, like the birth of a new star or the first concert of your favorite band.
The Doctor would learn how to play the guitar for you.
He would also always make you feel valued.
You help him process his emotions, giving him space but also reminding him that he is not alone.
You introduce him to Earth rock music, and he says it's way too much for him... But, you have a sneaking suspicion that he likes them.
Cuddling, hearing both of his hearts beat only for you.
He’ll randomly take you to obscure corners of history just because he knows you’d find them fascinating.
“Victorian libraries? Yeah, I figured you’d like this one.”
If you’re scared or anxious, he always offers his hand with a soft, “I won’t let anything happen to you.”
Hugs for days.
You’ll catch him humming old rock songs while fixing the TARDIS.
You knew that he liked those songs you showed him!
He’s not big on traditional affection but will gently rest his forehead against yours in private moments.
He still likes hugs though!
HUGS!
If you’re cold, he’ll wordlessly drape his leather jacket over your shoulders, even if it leaves him freezing.
I mean, does he get cold?
If you accidentally get lost in the TARDIS (again), he’ll show up at the perfect moment to “rescue” you, but only after a bit of dramatic suspense.
He’ll try to impress you with his knowledge of Earth slang, but somehow always picks the most outdated or wrong phrases.
"I’m not pulling your leg, you’re the real deal, like totally tubular!"
He'd say them with absolute sincerity, thinking he’s using the best slang, and then be completely baffled when you give him a confused look.
Or when you just end up laughing...

The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes;
Sejanus Plinth -
(This one is my favorite ヽ(✿゚▽゚)ノ)
You met Sejanus at the academy.
You both bond over your shared love for a certain subject.
He was instantly drawn to your quiet intellect and kind presence.
Plus, you weren't like the others at the school, you didn't just see him as a guy from District 2.
You saw him, for him.
You saw him for who he really was: kind-hearted, empathetic, and loyal, often putting himself at risk to stand up for what he believed was right.
You often help him with assignments on historical literature; from there, a friendship blossomed.
Throughout the friendship, Sejanus sees the true you; you are strong, understanding, and caring to everyone; and he respects you for it.
Sejanus admires your creativity and loves reading your stories.
He would always encourage you to share them with others, and possibly even strive to become an author one day.
You sort of became a safe place for him, someone he could confide in without judgment, (when he didn't want to go to Coryo.)
(By the way, Coryo kind of doesn't like you, but that is a given, since he's Coryo.)
Study dates sessions that often turn into long discussions about history, politics, and life.
Sejanus would tell you about his life in District 2, about his friends, and what he used to do before his father got rich and they moved to the Capitol.
Honestly, when Sejanus trusted, he trusted with his whole soul.
You trusted him a lot too.
Like a lot.
You told him all of your secrets, and he told you his.
You would paint together, with Sejanus joking about how his skills didn't compare to yours but enjoying the process anyway.
He would do his best, trying to paint you something.
He wouldn't give up, taking his sweet time - hours if he must - trying to paint you the prettiest painting that has ever been painted.
You tried to tell him that you would love anything he'd paint. Even if it was a simple stick figure or a house with the sun in the corner, no, Sejanus wants to make you something special.
What he gifted you after twelve painting sessions later was a painting of you, standing in a field, during sunset.
Very ethereal~
You cried.
By the wayyyy, his parents love you.
You are often invited to stay for dinner.
Sejanus' mother would show you alllll of the family pictures.
And baby pictures.
Sejanus gets a bit embarrassed, but you just can't get over how cute he was as a baby.
Sejanus realized his feelings during one night when you stayed over for dinner.
You had been invited to the Plinths' house for dinner; which became a sort of weekly thing.
In the very beginning, when his mother first asked you to join them for dinner, you were nervous, but Sejanus just said, "Trust me, they'll love you. My ma already does."
Now, dinner with the Plinths' was weekly, as said, and they had basically become your second family.
You called Sejanus' ma, "Mama Plinth."
Mama Plinth adored you from the start.
After everything Sejanus said about you, she loved you.
She was incredibly happy that her son had another friend.
(She had this motherly intuition that something was going on between the two of you, but you know, she was hoping Sejanus would find someone to spend the rest of his life with.
Yeah, this boy ain't dying.
Anyway, Mama Plinth would always set aside your favorite dish during dinner claiming, "It's no trouble at all, sweetheart."
Though more reserved, Sejanus' father would subtly show his approval.
Whether it was asking for your opinion on current events at the table or nodding when you shared your thoughts, you felt his respect grow each visit.
You felt like an honorary member of the family.
When you weren't over, Mama Plinth would call you to cheek on you, asking if you needed anything or even infiting you to shop with her; which usually included her buying you a little something, even though you politely would decline.
"Nonsense, sweetheart, this navy blue sweater would look amazing on you."
She once even joked, “If you don’t marry Sejanus, I might adopt you myself.”
The Plinths’ household maid quickly grew fond of you too.
It was a quiet moment, amidst the usual bustle of a Plinth family dinner.
You laughed at something Mama Plinth said, leaning into Sejanus' side without even realizing it.
As you talked animatedly, gesturing with your fork or your hand, Sejanus just... Stopped.
Seeing you laugh with his Ma, seeing you sitting there on the couch beside him...
Slow motion...
He realized how much you’d become a part of his world, and how empty it would feel without you in it.
"She fits here so perfectly. She fits with me. How could I have not seen it before?"
Mama Plinth, during the conversation with you, glanced over at her son.
Seeing the way that he was looking at you... She knew.
Sejanus was quieter than usual, lost in his thoughts.
His father was the one who broke him out of his thoughts, asking him if he was feeling alright.
Sejanus just smiled, nodding, before glancing at you, saying, "Never better."
After his realization, Sejanus started looking out for you even more than usual.
He'd walk you to the car after dinners or hangouts, offer his jacket if it got a bit chilly - or even when it wasn't - and carry your things without a second thought.
Mama Plinth caught on, as she did at that dinner.
She always grinned when Sejanus would take more time getting ready for dinners when you were joining.
He fidgets with his clothes and fixes the collar of his shirts... Ruffle with his hair.
She'd give her son knowing looks when he lingered near you, even when you weren't there and he was just talking to her about you.
When he returned home from the academy, he told his Ma about how you both got top marks on your test and his Ma said, “You know, dear, you would make quite the pair.”
His ears turned red as he stammered, “Ma!”
One night after dinner, as you were both standing on the porch of the Plinths' grand home, the warm glow of the lights spilling out behind you, Sejanus hesitated.
He had been waiting for the car with you after every dinner for weeks now, and tonight was no different - or so you thought.
"Hey," He said softly, catching your attention.
His hands were stuffed into his pockets, his shoulders slightly hunched like he was trying to shield himself or something.
"Can I... Can I tell you something?"
You nodded, sensing the seriousness in his tone, and hearing a hint of nervousness. "Of course, Sej. You know you can tell me anything."
He took a deep breath, his eyes locking onto yours.
"I've been trying to figure out how to say this. It's been in my head for weeks now and every time I think I've got the words, I just... Freeze. But, tonight, I can't hold it in anymore."
He took a step closer, his voice quieter, "You mean so much to me. You're the one person I can always be myself around, no matter what. When- When I'm with you, it's like... Everything makes sense. You make everything feel lighter, brighter - better. And honestly, I can't imagine a life without you in it."
His voice cracked slightly, and he looked down at the ground, clearing his throat slightly. "I don't just care about you as a friend. It's so much more than that. I'm in love with you. And I know I'm not perfect, but if you'll have me, I promise I'll spend every day trying to make you as happy as you make me."
For a moment, you just stood there, blinking up at him in stunned silence.
Sejanus' confession hit you like a tidal wave - unexpected but warm, like the feeling of the sun breaking through the clouds.
Sejanus misinterpreted your silence, nervously rubbing the back of his neck. “I… I shouldn’t have sprung this on you. If you don’t feel the same, I completely understand, I just-”
Before he could finish rambling, you reached out and gently placed a hand on his arm.
“Sejanus, stop. I-” You hesitated, your heart pounding in your chest. A smile broke across your face as you said softly, “I love you too.”
Relief washed over Sejanus’ face, and he let out a soft, breathless laugh. “You do?” He asked as if he couldn’t quite believe it.
You nodded, stepping closer, "Yes, ever since you and I got caught in the rain that one day after a day at the academy, and you covered me the best you could with your coat."
And before either of you could overthink, you leaned up and kissed him.
The kiss was tentative at first, warm and sweet. Sejanus’ hands gently cupped your face, his thumb brushing against your cheek.
When you finally pulled back, you both were smiling brightly, your foreheads touching as you let out soft, nervous laughs.
“I didn’t think tonight could get any better, but I guess I was wrong,” He murmured, his voice filled with wonder.
As the car came around, you both wished for more time. You didn't want to let go just yet.
You both couldn't look away from each other, he held your hand the entire time, his thumb gently tracing circles over your knuckles.
Only when the driver honked the horn, did you reluctantly break away.
Sejanus couldn't stop grinning for days.
Plinth family dinners became even more special, with the two of you stealing shy, affectionate glances at each other across the table.
Mama Plinth knew. She gave you both a smile. She said nothing, but you both knew that she was happy for you.
I mean, it was kind of obvious, you both sat closer together, your chairs pushed closer, Sejanus' hand sometimes even landing on your knee throughout the night.
His father was very happy for both of you too.
Whenever Sejanus planned something romantic, Mama Plinth insisted on hearing every detail afterward.
“Did he finally take you to that restaurant I suggested? No? Well, I’ll remind him again.”
Sejanus would rest his head on your shoulder during family movie nights, with Mama Plinth calling you both “her darlings.”
You both love spending quiet afternoons reading together.
He'll sit beside you on the couch in the family library or yours, sometimes resting his head on your shoulder or your lap as you read aloud to him.
Sejanus has a habit of leaving little notes for you to find throughout the day. Whether it’s a small “I love you” tucked in a book you’re reading or a goofy doodle, he loves reminding you how much you mean to him.
Music often plays softly in the background when you’re together, and every now and then, Sejanus will take your hand and spin you around the room.
To slower songs, you both sway side to side, his arms wrapped securely around your waist while your hands rest gently on his shoulders.
Sejanus often rests his forehead against yours, eyes closed, just savoring the moment in complete silence.
Sometimes, he hums softly to the music, his voice low and comforting.
Sometimes, he'd even sing. Heavenly.
It’s one of those small, intimate things that never fails to make your heart flutter.
To faster - or more rock songs - Sejanus lets loose in the most endearing way.
He’ll grab your hand and spin you around, laughing breathlessly as you both stumble over your own feet.
He’ll dramatically lip-sync, grinning ear to ear when you play the air guitar.
There’s a playful energy as he twirls you, dips you exaggeratedly, or messily headbangs to the beat, all while making sure you’re smiling and having just as much fun as he is.
Lying side by side, you often talk late into the night.
Sejanus is the type to hold your hand as he listens to you, his thumb gently stroking your fingers.
Sometimes, he brushes stray hair from your face as you talk, his gaze soft and full of adoration and love.
Sejanus is big on forehead kisses. Whether he’s saying goodbye or goodnight, he’ll gently press his lips to your forehead.
On the occasions when you have sleepovers on the weekends, you often sleep in together. Sejanus loves lazy mornings where the two of you stay bundled under the covers, exchanging sleepy smiles and soft kisses.
Knowing how much you love history and vintage aesthetics, Sejanus plans simple picnics with blankets and wicker baskets, sometimes sneaking in your favorite book for you to read together under the shade of a tree.
Only occasionally he would plan dates at fancy restaurants, but 90% of the time, he takes you to museums, diners, picnics in fields, or fun walks through parks.
When either of you feels overwhelmed, the other is always there.
Sejanus loves to hold you close, his voice soft as he reassures you. When he’s the one feeling down, he finds comfort in your hugs and your gentle words of encouragement.
Sejanus loves surprising you with little gifts that remind him of you - like a new book he thinks you’d enjoy or a pressed flower he saved because it was your favorite.
You, in turn, sketch little portraits of him, capturing his kind eyes and soft smile. When he sees them, his face lights up, and he always insists on framing them.
In the evenings when you’re both too tired to do anything elaborate, you curl up together and watch old movies.
He loves hearing you talk about the historical details or trivia, and his arm stays around your shoulders the entire time.
He so plans on marrying you one day.
(His Ma gave him one of her rings for him to someday give to you.)
<3
Your relationship with Sejanus is a blend of heartfelt support, quiet understanding, and playful joy.
He’s your biggest cheerleader, always encouraging your creativity and passions, while you ground him with your wisdom and steady presence.
Together, you find comfort in the little things - swaying to the music, sharing quiet evenings over tea or coffee, and exchanging soft smiles that say more than words ever could.
With Sejanus, love feels warm, safe, and endlessly uplifting - a partnership built on trust, mutual care, and an unspoken promise to always be there for each other.

hold on.... just thought of an online songs au where daisy put in the link to a performance by brand new day instead.... out of the three which would daisy be most enamored by and what would her dynamic with each of them be?
oh... oh wow.... my friend i love you and your big beautiful mind... this is such a cool little concept. a foray into original fiction LMAO
first, to share something slightly on topic, roxy exists in the os universe lmao. she's with james because i made her and i said so!!!!!! in this world, the thing with bnd still happened, so they're not together anymore, she moves schools and she's focusing on her own thing :)
so au of an au, daisy accidentally finds a brand new day video. right off the bat i think the music is entirely too much for her unfortunately; even though kendall sings pop punk music too, she's kind of micro-dosing with his acoustic versions. it's going to take some time for her to be like "oh wow, okay this is cool" because like all the music she listens to comes from her grandparents and church...
if she were to find herself interacting with roxy, mag, and dani i think her dynamic with each of them would be pretty different!
roxy and daisy would be friends, i like to think, but the two of them don't really have much in common. they both like to read, so that's a nice start. roxy doodles in her notebook sometimes and daisy loves to draw. but other than that... rox is super into pop culture and the latest happening and daisy lives in a completely different world. so i think their dynamic would mirror the one she and kendall will have in online songs when they first start seriously talking; just kind of showing her the ropes of tech and pop culture and whatnot. i don't think either of them would be romantically attracted to the other, but i do think secretly they'd each think the other was so cool and sweet and nice in their own special ways. daisy has traits roxy wishes she did and vice versa!
mag and daisy... look. i'm a sucker for good girl x bad boy. gotta be one of my fav tropes. but... bnd's music is still too much for dais right off the bat so i think that mag wouldn't really fuck with her after he learned that lol. his one goal in life is breaking the music industry and he's not really wasting time interacting with or talking to people that don't really slot into the future he's set up for himself. but i mean he wouldn't be dick to her or anything. i can see him like joking around with her about her lack of pop culture knowledge and telling her the crazy celebrity conspiracies he def believes in. maybe if they were older and mag mellowed out a bit more, he could find himself attracted to her if they had more in common. i don't see a world where daisy ever really finds herself attracted to him though.
dani and daisy is interesting to me... she'd probably find herself enamored with them more than the other two. there's still the music barrier i fear, but, dani comes from a pretty traditional and religious family like daisy does. i think that despite their religious upbringings being different, they could relate to each other on that front! i do think she'd find the drums more interesting to play than guitar just because it's so much more animated - so if she found a really good clip of dani drumming i could see her watching that a lot like she watched kendall's video :) i also imagine that of the three, dani is most chill. they're slightly more introverted than mag and roxy are so their energy level would also be way better for daisy to handle!! i think given time they could find themselves in a little something-something :p dani is pretty fond of nature too, just like daisy is too. they can have some sweet hikes all around minnesota and virginia
idk what do yall think? maybe i just don't like mag so much i'm not able to see his similarities to kendall lol. because, i mean, daisy is going to learn that kendall has a mean streak eventually so... hm. interesting!! tysm for this cross-over question i just ADORE IT <3

Getting to know your moots
Got tagged by @taniks-the-final-shape over on Ellis' blog. Thanks for the chance to ramble <3
What's the origin of your blog's title?
It's the nickname/artist name that I've been using for the past 8~ years. I came with it one day at a friends house because I wanted to become a youtuber and have a special name for my channel.
Funny enough my name is misspelled, it should be "Brillo Púrpura" (Purple Glow) but I was like 9 when I chose this name and clearly didn't know how to write.
Favorite Fandoms:
There are too many but of the top of my head right now: Amnesia, Creepypasta, Destiny 2, FNaF, Genshin Impact, LoL, Shadow of The Colossus, THE FINALS.
OTP(S) + shipname:
I've been shipping Slenderman x Jeff The Killer since I'm a kid, it's quite literally my comfort ship.
Favorite Color:
Purple and violet!
Favorite Game:
Amnesia: The Dark Descent.
Song stuck in your head:
Both My Chemical Romance - To the End and Andrés Calamaro - Donde Manda Marinero are stuck in loop in my head.
Weirdest habit/trait:
Not only I'm stupidly androgynous but my face it's apparently pretty generic. So much that I sometimes find people that look a lot like me when I'm looking for drawing ideas on Pinterest.
It's really uncanny.
Hobbies:
Apart from drawing I really enjoy sewing! I'm trying cosplay this year. If everything goes right I will cosplay as Crow in the future. I'm also learning to do embroidery and I'm making myself a Destiny inspired jacket (won't say much because I'll jinx it)
If you could have any job you wish what would it be?
I really, really want to become an Environmental Artist for Frictional Games or Hearth Machine or perhaps on my own small indie studio.
Something you're good at:
Starting drawings!
Something you're bad at:
Finishing drawings!
Something you excel at:
Listening and keeping secrets. If you feel like life it's getting too heavy just drop by my DMs and I promise nothing it's going out of that chat.
Something you love:
Phalanx from Shadow of the Colossus, It's my favorite character in all media and mostly because all the things I assumed about it when I played the original game in my brother's PS2.
That not-so-little flying snake beats Crow just because I headcanoned the shit out of it and now I love it so much.
Something you could talk about for hours without off the cuff:
I can talk about anything for hours, I love talking.
Something you hate:
I'm trying to keep this "hate nothing" mentality but god I'll commit homicide if I hear someone say "Horror games are dying" and "Modern horror it's for kids" again.
No, they're not. You just follow what's mainstream and think it's bad because of it. Fuck you, I hate you.
Something you collect:
Plushies! I love them.
Something you forget:
I keep forgetting that Eris Morn was a hunter or that Saint-14 it's an exo and I also have a hard time remembering names general.
What's your love language?
Surprising people with gifts! I'm terrible with words and I'm also pretty fun
Favorite movie/show:
Avatar by James Cameron
Favorite food:
It depends. Snack? Soy Sprouts Full meal? Any type of fried fish, specially whitebait and mojarrita (can't find the actual translation for this one sorry). Dessert? Ricotta Pie Drink? Matecocido, mate or tereré. Any variation of mate honestly.
Favorite animal:
I know that as the one with 37 cats the answer may seem obvious but I actually love chickens! It's apparently something that I carry on since I was a kid and nobody in my family has an actual explanation for it since I never owned a chicken.
Are you musical?
Of course! I know how to play the bass and I'm going to learn both electric guitar and drums this year. I also went to ballet and tango classes when I was a kid.
I'm pretty bad at dancing now but I do it often to warm up for the day.
Favorite subject in school:
Math! I went to a socials school so math was one of the only subjects were the answer to a problem was definitive and not so subjective.
Least favorite subject:
Art, not because it was bad or anything! But since I was known as the "artist" in the class every group project was more of a "We'll give you ideas, you do it" thing.
What's your best character trait?
I'm told I'm pretty funny! Probably because I'm pretty fast to make jokes about the situation at hand.
Worst character trait:
I think that everybody randomly hates me for no reason. We can be friends for years and I will still think that you are talking to me not because you like me but because you see me as a chore.
I'm working on it.
If you could change any detail of your day right now, what would it be?
I want it to rain, not only because it's so fucking hot right now but because I like rain.
If you could travel in time, who would you like to meet?
Both my grandads died before I was born, I would really like to talk with them and know how much we shared. But outside family I would love to see a Les Luthiers show.
Recommend one of your favorite fanfics:
My immoral literally defined my actual style and made me rediscover MCR so yeah...
I also really like Love & Luxury and A Crow's Redemption <3
Btw I also have an Destiny RP blog @ellis-the-lightguide
I think that's all of it. Again, thanks @taniks-the-final-shape for the mention <3 I should interact with you more often honestly.
I'm tagging some people, if you don't want to do it just ignore it no strings attached!
@lord-heliox @f4t4-m0rg4n4 @unlucky-phantom @diegoellol @the-dragon-father @gerda-3
