Coconut eggnog is pretty good. All you really need is coconut milk and nutmeg. I used to use 1/2 caned high fat coconut milk, 1/2 coconut milk beverage from the milk department. Add some rum and you have a creamy festive holiday beverage. Add some brandy and a merichino cherry and you have an amazing brandy alexander.
Substitutions can actually work really well once you really learn your ingredients, but it will never be exactly the same thing. A Thai style coconut custard made with tapioca is really amazing in it's own right, and can be made vegan. I've heard silken tofu can be great in things when you need a creamy custardy base, but you have to get the balance of protein and fat right. A chocolate ice cream base made with black beans and coconut milk is amazing.
It takes practice and creativity, an in depth understanding of how alternative ingredients work, and a total lack of inhibitions when it comes to adding oil and salt and you can make some really amazing foods. It really helps to start with recipes that are naturally free of whatever you need them to be free of, and once you're comfortable with those, try making alternatives and substitutions.
Just never go to a regular restaurant, chef or cook looking for these things. Look for places that serve things naturally free of whatever you're avoiding, and target places that specialize in whatever your constraints may be. There's plenty of dairy free, egg free, or gluten free recipes online. Watch cooking videos to get a feel for what other people do. You got this.

this is my entire stance on the "american food is bad" discourse summed up
#there are two distinct times when american food is bad#when it's people who are well off or rich enough that all they care about is appearances and how expensive the ingredients are#bcs they don't care about taste anymore it's a status thing#and also when it's stupid gentrified gimmick restaurants basically following the Cesare from Big Top Burger formula#where it doesn't matter how it tastes#it's just about it looking cool or having a gimmick so influences will come take pictures and give you tons of free advertising#that's when american food is bad#bcs rip to y'all but I grew up dirt fucking poor around other dirt fucking poor people of all races and backgrounds#and we COULD cook y'all under the table with these things#when all you have for food is hamburger helper and canned soup well damn you learn how to make it taste good#also those two bad times are NOT unique to america AT ALL#remember the Australian fish and chips that had activated charcoal and looked like actual shit?#this ain't an american problem this is a fucking rich people problem send tweet#this is also why I can't watch chopped anymore#the way they talk about ingredients like those like they're worthless and they can't believe people would eat them#like cool glad you grew up well off enough to afford real people food#the rest of us had to learn to make velveeta taste good and you know what#I could cook your ass under the table with velveeta and all those other 'cheap' ingredients you're mocking

footnotes arent enough I need you to talk to me like im fucking Amelia Bedelia
#this isn’t about anything in particular btw. I just have to add a lot of memos when I’m doing things because some things are done a certain#way and it isn’t explained well in the instructions. like my mom has instructions on her baking recipes right#but when it says stuff like add dry ingredients to wet ingredients it also means you don’t dump it in one go you add it slowly by portion#this is probably why I find videos and demonstrations the most helpful when I learn something. like I almost always ask someone to show me#how they do it because there could be something they do that’s already second nature and wouldn’t really be considered in an explanation yk#I don’t think I’m an exception either. when the rice is done cooking I divide it into 4 quarters to bless it#but there are a million ways to divide rice and it makes me think that one persons way of doing it or not doing it all is just as valid#theres also technically no wrong way to divide rice afaik. this means either all ways of dividing rice is safe or valid until we find some#universally terrible way of dividing rice. until that happens nobody really thinks about specifying HOW you divide the rice#source: I have anxiety starting and doing things for the first time because I got way too many people yell at me NONONO WHAT ARE YOU DOING#THATS WRONG while I’m in the middle of doing the thing. I would rather have people think I’m either very stupid or overly specific#than go thru the panic inducing fear of ‘YOURE DOING THIS WRONG OMG WHY DIDNT YOU ASK AHEAD OF TIME THIS WILL BE FUCKED UP FOREVER’ 🧍#nothing wrong if you don’t give something a second thought because you’re so used to it. but I can and will ask about it and I don’t think I#really should feel bad about it if I don’t know enough to dispute it. idk#the other way around I try to be as specific as possible and word things in a way that people who might not get where I’m coming from will#understand. but the problem with that is my explanations tend to be lengthy and I lose them either way 🗿#Im. trying to work on that using examples and stuff because they seem to work the best#but if I could write everything down on a word doc and beam it into your melon that would save both of us time and embarassment#im rambling the short version is I have adhd#yapping

it's a cook or be cooked world out there y'all. Be the chef. Sure, it is easier to make a meal if you have a large kitchen and have someone to buy the ingredients, but the best chefs are the ones who don't need any of that. Learn the recipes. Share the food with friends. Don't just be content with living your life only eating microwave meals.
#If you got any of this dumbass 'motivational' post then I applaud you#I'm going to explain the parallels in the tags#Be the chef = be the successful one#Large kitchen & someone to buy the ingredients = come from wealth#Best chefs are the ones who don't need any of that = you don't need to be rich to be successful#Learn the recipes = work to succeed#Share the food with your friends = be generous#Don't just be content with living your life only eating microwave meals = don't sit on your ass and whine in self pity#motivation#motivating quotes#get motivated#motivating myself#motivación#motivatingwords#gen z slang

Many cults dedicated to Namira are known to practice an alchemical variant of corpse medicine, providing treatments that are intense but effective. Though this Daedric Prince and her devotees are largely reviled by wider society, some find their cures unmatched in their usefulness in managing chronic conditions - as long as they don't ask where they came from. Some cults charge a high price for their medicines, while others view it almost as a method of proselytising, considering the satisfaction of bringing outsiders that bit into the fold as payment enough.
#eyy I finally wrote another headcanon post#I was reading about corpse medicine a bit ago. which is FUCKING UNHINGED by the way absolutely recommend learning about it#if that kind of historical tidbit interests you#but it got me thinking about its potential practice in a setting where it could work. like human flesh and hearts are#used as alchemy ingredients in-game. they do have inherent magical/alchemical qualities#maybe ingesting powdered skull WOULD cure your migraines in tamriel. do we have proof that it WOULDN'T?#so then I had this idea#anyway hope you're having a nice day!#tes headcanon#namira#alchemy#the elder scrolls#headcanon post#tes#tesblr#namiira#daedric prince#fay talks

Danish pancakes
For any and all Danish learners, this is my (technically, it's originally from Frk. Jensens kogebog) recipe for Danish pancakes, proudly presented in Danish and English | italics indicated a comment. Note that in Denmark pancakes are a dessert. The are large but thin, like crêpes.
Ingredienser, fire portioner - Ingredients, four servings
4 dl mel - flour 4-5 dl mælk/hvidtøl - milk/light ale | plant-based milks work just as well as cow's milk. you should try it with light ale though, it's really good! 3-4 æg - eggs 1-2 spsk. sukker - tbsp. sugar | spsk. is short for spiseske 'tablespoon' 2 tsk. vaniljesukker - tsp. vanilla sugar | tsk. is short for teske 'teaspoon' 1 spsk. olie - 1 tbsp. vegetable oil en knivspids salt - a nip of salt | knivspids literally translates to 'knife tip'
Fremgangsmåde - method
1) Bland alle ingredienserne i en skål. Pisk evt. sukker og æg sammen først - Mix all the ingredients in a bowl. Optional: whisk the eggs and sugar separately and then mix.
1a) Dejen skal have konsistens, så den kan hældes relativt let uden at være for tynd - The texture of the batter should be so that it's relatively easy to pour without being too thin.
1b) Teknisk set skal dejen hvile i køleskabet i en halv time, men man kan sagtens bruge den med det samme - Technically, the batter is supposed to rest in the fridge for half an hour, but you can use it immediately without problem.
2) Varm en smule olie på en stegepande - Heat a bit of oil in a frying pan.
3) Bag pandekagerne ved mellemhøj varme (ca. 7 på komfur med 1-9) - Fry the pancakes on medium-high heat (approx. 7 on a stove with settings 1-9) | generally Danish pancakes are the size of the pan you're frying them on, so make sure you cover the entire pan with a thin layer of batter.
4) Server pandekagerne varme med is, syltetøj, sirup, flormelis eller sukker - Serve the pancakes while hot with ice cream, jam, syrup or (powdered) sugar | in Danish, the separate word flormelis is used for powdered/icing sugar, not to be confused with puddersukker 'brown sugar'.
#i know just mixing all the ingredients willy nilly makes me a heathen but i really cant be bothered to sift anything anywhere#this was the first recipe i ever learned to make; let it be your first danish recipe!#pancakes#danish#danish language#danish recipe#recipe#cooking#food#danish langblr#danish food#dessert#desserts#original

something something starting anew....
#just pondering today#feeling like .. it's never too late to be kind to yourself#in fact: learning to be kind to yourself in your recovery is a key ingredient in actually feeling better.#just. allowing yourself to exist in your current state of being#I've been ill for so long it's not gonna dissappear over night whether or not I ruminate on my mistakes and mentally beat myself for not#being “better” already.#there's also no magical day you start feeling better#it's gradual and you'll see it by the beach when it rains again

honestly starting to believe that people who think vets are being sponsored by pet food companies to sell you kibble and "know that kibble is actually terrible for your pet!11!!1!" but "care more about money than proper nutrition" shouldn't own pets
#tell me you know nothing about vet school and veterinarians without telling me#vet students have to go through SO many nutrition classes#im not even a fucking prevet student and i have to go through them too. prevet students get like 4x as many as that :sob:#if youre majoring in any field that works with animals you learn nutrition as part of your degree program#you reading doggy mommy blogs where sharon said that kibble is the devil and bad for dogs because it looks like kibble is not education#KIBBLE IS GOOD FOR YOUR DOG#obviously some brands of kibble are atrocious and no one should feed it to their dogs#but balanced kibbles with good ingredients (ie a lot of kibbles sold by purina) should genuinely be most if not all of your dogs diet#adding a bunch of stuff on top of kibble can be worse for your dog than just...giving them the kibble#anyways specifically about the 'vets are being sponsored by dog food companies' thing#thats like saying teachers are being sponsored by antifa to make your kid gay or some shit#vets arent getting paid enough (or at all by said dog food companies) to try to sell you a specific brand of pet food#just to 'make a profit'#simon says

Horses. All animals but especially horses.
“Be curious about what you’re writing about” is not stock Common Writing Advice but it really, really should be. There are a lot of written works that fail due to the authors just being obviously incurious about what they are writing about.
#I've actually had this argument with other writers#convinced they'll be fine just making up whatever details they want#which is a garbage strategy because even if you somehow managed not to make any mistakes#you're missing out on a whole lot of really cool things you could have included if you bothered to do any goddamn research at all#the worst offender never changed their ways#they also refused to read within their genre lest they be influenced by “inferior writing and ideas”#what.#i stopped communicating with them not long after that#that's like somebody who wants to be a professional chef refusing to learn about where the ingredients come from and how they're grown#and absolutely never eating any of the dishes they want to cook and relying just on vibes and what they want to happen#r/ididnthaveeggs mentality#carrots and zucchini are both vegetables surely my substitution in this carrot cake recipe will work#it tastes bad?! you just don't understand my vision!#how dare you bring me a piece from your favorite bakery that's disgusting and also insulting to my craft#jesus christ im so glad i left that server#they got so mad when someone compared their line by line prose to [prominent award-winning author]#because they'd never even read that author how dare anyone insinuate their style wasn't completely original#six months later guess what#'i discovered this rad new author!'#did you indeed#last i heard they were dipping their toes into romance even though they despise the genre because how hard can it be?#my twist endings surely won't enrage readers even though i myself hate twist endings!#if you're reading this babe i hope you have finally read more than 3 books published after 2005 and learned how horses work#sorry this person was just really infuriating

25 ways to be a little more punk in 2025
Cut fast fashion - buy used, learn to mend and/or make your own clothes, buy fewer clothes less often so you can save up for ethically made quality
Cancel subscriptions - relearn how to pirate media, spend $10/month buying a digital album from a small artist instead of on Spotify, stream on free services since the paid ones make you watch ads anyway
Green your community - there's lots of ways to do this, like seedbombing or joining a community garden or organizing neighborhood trash pickups
Be kind - stop to give directions, check on stopped cars, smile at kids, let people cut you in line, offer to get stuff off the high shelf, hold the door, ask people if they're okay
Intervene - learn bystander intervention techniques and be prepared to use them, even if it feels awkward
Get closer to your food - grow it yourself, can and preserve it, buy from a farmstand, learn where it's from, go fishing, make it from scratch, learn a new ingredient
Use opensource software - try LibreOffice, try Reaper, learn Linux, use a free Photoshop clone. The next time an app tries to force you to pay, look to see if there's an opensource alternative
Make less trash - start a compost, be mindful of packaging, find another use for that plastic, make it a challenge for yourself!
Get involved in local politics - show up at meetings for city council, the zoning commission, the park district, school boards; fight the NIMBYs that always show up and force them to focus on the things impacting the most vulnerable folks in your community
DIY > fashion - shake off the obsession with pristine presentation that you've been taught! Cut your own hair, use homemade cosmetics, exchange mani/pedis with friends, make your own jewelry, duct tape those broken headphones!
Ditch Google - Chromium browsers (which is almost all of them) are now bloated spyware, and Google search sucks now, so why not finally make the jump to Firefox and another search like DuckDuckGo? Or put the Wikipedia app on your phone and look things up there?
Forage - learn about local edible plants and how to safely and sustainably harvest them or go find fruit trees and such accessible to the public.
Volunteer - every week tutoring at the library or once a month at the humane society or twice a year serving food at the soup kitchen, you can find something that matches your availability
Help your neighbors - which means you have to meet them first and find out how you can help (including your unhoused neighbors), like elderly or disabled folks that might need help with yardwork or who that escape artist dog belongs to or whether the police have been hassling people sleeping rough
Fix stuff - the next time something breaks (a small appliance, an electronic, a piece of furniture, etc.), see if you can figure out what's wrong with it, if there are tutorials on fixing it, or if you can order a replacement part from the manufacturer instead of trashing the whole thing
Mix up your transit - find out what's walkable, try biking instead of driving, try public transit and complain to the city if it sucks, take a train instead of a plane, start a carpool at work
Engage in the arts - go see a local play, check out an art gallery or a small museum, buy art from the farmer's market
Go to the library - to check out a book or a movie or a CD, to use the computers or the printer, to find out if they have other weird rentals like a seed library or luggage, to use meeting space, to file your taxes, to take a class, to ask question
Listen local - see what's happening at local music venues or other events where local musicians will be performing, stop for buskers, find a favorite artist, and support them
Buy local - it's less convenient than online shopping or going to a big box store that sells everything, but try buying what you can from small local shops in your area
Become unmarketable - there are a lot of ways you can disrupt your online marketing surveillance, including buying less, using decoy emails, deleting or removing permissions from apps that spy on you, checking your privacy settings, not clicking advertising links, and...
Use cash - go to the bank and take out cash instead of using your credit card or e-payment for everything! It's better on small businesses and it's untraceable
Give what you can - as capitalism churns on, normal shmucks have less and less, so think about what you can give (time, money, skills, space, stuff) and how it will make the most impact
Talk about wages - with your coworkers, with your friends, while unionizing! Stop thinking about wages as a measure of your worth and talk about whether or not the bosses are paying fairly for the labor they receive
Think about wealthflow - there are a thousand little mechanisms that corporations and billionaires use to capture wealth from the lower class: fees for transactions, interest, vendor platforms, subscriptions, and more. Start thinking about where your money goes, how and where it's getting captured and removed from our class, and where you have the ability to cut off the flow and pass cash directly to your fellow working class people

I want to read the essay you wrote for your 9th grade English teacher. The one who had a soft enough voice to make you think she would never tell anyone and told you to write anything you wanted.
I wanna hear what you felt like you couldn’t tell your parents but could write to a total stranger you saw every day. I wanna hear the pieces of you packed in between the half baked grammar like chocolate chips in cookie dough.
I want it all.
#I just wanna learn what your recipe is#like what combination of smiles and laughs and broken promises made you you#not because I want to fix it#not because I think a single ingredient should be replaced#cause I want to know you#poetry#poems on tumblr#the mortifying ordeal of being known
