In Black Friday, Nick and Matt originally wanted to make Wiggly a giant puppet but they ran out of time and money so they decided to use the lights/set instead (this shook me because I loved the Wiggly effect so much!!)

Similarly, they wanted each of the Lords in Black in Nerdy Prudes to be puppets but ran out of time/money so they had to be "just people" instead 😂

My therapist told me it would be good if I took a day off from work during the week, so I want to make Wednesdays my study and free time day, like I used to do in the past. It was great to have a break since I've been working so much. I woke up early and did yoga and meditation first thing in the morning. Without any distractions, it was easy to keep my house clean, and I was able to vacuum and clean my house before 9 am.

I did a very focused study session before lunch and then read a little under my tree in my backyard. It's really really hot, but it's going to rain on Friday, which makes me happy. After lunch I played Stardew Valley on my new laptop and did more study sessions while watching Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. I had a 3h class today, so it was really good to study during the day because I didn't feel lost in class.

Awareness of the passage of time is new for Tianlang-jun.  Or. That’s not quite right. Of time moving despite his inability to move with it.  But the prolonged sensation of years flipping by like the pages of a well-loved play—the odd ache of missing the story even as he’s deeply entrenched in it, desiring nothing more than to finish so that he may read it again, wanting it to never end but knowing that all things must… It’s a lot. He’s unused to it.  “So, Xiyan. Hopefully you can forgive my rambling.” Tianlang-jun lies down next to the midnight-black soil that will soon release his beloved. “I wish to tell you everything.”

An update

I am now 20 and I'm back to learning my beloved languages once again.

The quote I adhere to remains the same:

One Piece is my passion and my life, and one of the main reason for learning languages  — “To enjoy more One Piece content”.

Perhaps there's an additional one I now live by:

Any content is 1000 times better when consumed in a language you don't fully understand yet.

I'm no longer actively learning Korean. Korean is cool af, but was just too energy-consuming at the time. Especially with me learning Chinese & Italian at the same time.

Right now, learning is much slower, but I'm hoping to come back to my previous tempo as soon as I'm ready. Right now i'm 1700+ chinese and 300+ italian reviews behind on anki. And recently I've been limiting my daily reviews to only 100 in both languages so as not to overwhelm myself because of my own self-expectations. Learning 20-30 new words daily was fun, but reviewing 400+ words daily? Not so much. Hence why I had multiple 5 week long breaks during the last year.

Chinese is still my babygirl, despite all the hardships I had.

Italian is on pause at least until I catch up with reviews.

Mexican Spanish is the one I'm slowly learning for fun and engagement with the part of me which earns to LEARN and consume new knowledge. Engaging with SQMP content is also a major reason for my current interest in this magnificent language.

For now, my only goal is to slowly reintroduce this language learning practice back into my life.

Language Learning Journey Update

It's been a while since I've been on Tumblr! In the months I've been away, I was focusing heavily on Persian and strengthening my skills in all areas of the language before I switch to a maintenance phase and pick up another language. During this time, I also got really into planning and journaling which has helped me better structure language learning in my schedule as well as reflect on how best to structure my time.

I certainly learned a lot from this time but the biggest takeaway for me is that my biggest pain point when learning a language is acquiring vocabulary. I tend to let it happen rather naturally (slowly) and while it's a valid method, it also leads me to stagnate and plateau. That's why, with the change in my language learning plans, I've also restructured my learning schedule (for, like, the millionth time).

Learning Two Languages Simultaneously

I was originally planning on (re)learning Korean after going through the intensive 3 months of Persian but recent developments in my professional life have pushed me to start learning Cantonese instead. My goal for Cantonese is mostly to reach a decent listening comprehension level and a basic speaking level.

Although I'm learning Cantonese from scratch, I feel that I still have a long way to go with Persian. I am not ready for a traditional maintenance phase, but I know I am close to burn out and have to dial it back. The schedule is structured around Persian and I fill the rest of the time I was using for Persian previously, for Cantonese.

ON/OFF Weeks System

This system was inspired by my need to find a different way to learn and focus on vocabulary while also avoiding burn out in Persian.

ON Weeks: These are weeks where I will be focusing on 1 skill in Persian in the mornings. For example, on Monday, I will be reading intensively (e.g., breaking down phrases, re-reading, translating, compiling vocabulary) for about 25 minutes. In the afternoons, I am working on getting exposure to Cantonese and learning the sound system.

OFF Weeks: These weeks involve only practicing the Persian vocabulary I accumulated during the ON weeks. I'll be re-reading them, defining or looking up words on Forvo, writing practice sentences, uploading them to HelloTalk, and correcting them. I also do some light, passive activities like listening while I clean something or reading for a few minutes without stopping to translate.

Off weeks don't really change much in the way of Cantonese. I will continue with my plan as is.

Maintenance languages: I do have to maintain French and Spanish, however, I am lucky that I interact with languages almost on a daily basis. When I foresee that a day may be void of one, I'll stack it with another hobby of mine (e.g., journaling in Spanish or reading in French).

140 days of productivity: day 100/140

📸: acupuncture sesh + going out for a run

Wow, 100 days already! Today was a slow and peaceful day. I had an appointment with my acupuncturist at 7 am and it took us a few hours to relieve my sciatic pain. It was cloudy and drizzling and I didn't feel productive. My new laptop was sent to the technician for internal cleaning and I didn't have much material to work with, but I did work on an Instagram reel that I should’ve posted weeks ago to promote my custom candles.

I spent most of the afternoon in silence, lying on the couch with the curtains closed, listening to the sound of my refrigerator. It made me very nostalgic. I guess it reminded me of when I was little and I would spend afternoons like this at my grandmother's house. The adults would take a nap after lunch and I couldn't make any noise, so I would play in silence or read while the house was plunged into a pleasant darkness. It was just me and the constant sound of the refrigerator. This memory made me happy.

My mother-in-law suddenly decided to go to the beach tomorrow so I spent the evening packing. I also went out for a run before it got too dark and bought some fruits for our upcoming trip.
