I really do love tall, severe-looking, villain-faced Shen Qingqiu. Like, Shen Yuan looks in the mirror and goes, “Yeah, this face looks like it should be typecast.” He looks like a villain. How could anyone see this intimidating cultivator and see anything but a villain?! Oh nooooo, he’s dooooomed! 

All of Shen Yuan’s freaking out over his role, trying (and failing) not to seem OOC, efforts to act nicer, unintentionally being cute, falling into damsel-in-distress situations, and getting romanced by the protagonist, in my opinion, is funnier if he’s this tall, severe-looking, villain-faced man through all of it. I like the idea of a more gradual softening. When we first meet SY (and SQQ), yeah, he looks like a scumbag villain, somehow he even dresses evilly, but by the time the story really gets going, SY’s personal style, expressions, mannerisms, etc. are softer and more his own. A face looks different when you know someone. 

Things that villain-faced Shen Qingqiu looks like he should be doing: 

Announcing that the emperor has been poisoned, in such a way that makes everyone suspect that he poisoned the emperor, except no one has sufficient proof or status yet to make the accusation. 

Framing a loyal and longstanding noble family for treason in such a way that ends with their execution, from which one child will barely escape while swearing to avenge their dead family and clear their name. 

Turning his back on an ally at a crucial moment on the battlefield, failing to bring the reinforcements that he promised, ending in the tragic death of this ally whom he always viewed as a rival to eliminate. 

Carefully holding and staring at an ornate dagger in the privacy of his rooms, late at night, in such a way that lets the audience know that, oh yeah, this man is going to commit murder with it. 

Things that Shen Yuan is doing with this villainous face and figure: 

“Oh, look! Golden-feathered sunshine viper ducklings! Awww…”
