Lackadasiy Makeup part 2

Part one was more of a ramble, wanted to make part two because I have a more in-depth analysis on the characters makeup

I mentioned in part one that makeup is usually thought of as a coverup, something for women to hide behind. But in Lackadaisy, makeup reflects each makeup wearers true self. Like Ivy and her flapper outfit, she is associated with light and the sun, and her shimmering gold eyeshadow and mascaraed eyelashes and gold dress, shows her true self, someone beautiful, youthfully charming, and radiates the warm glow of the sun.

Ivy also only wears makeup inside the speak easy. Before the 1920s “nice girls didn’t wear makeup”after the war and the men returned home, women competed for jobs and would wear attention grabbing makeup, buuuuuut it still wasn’t really seen as a good thing or a professional thing. I guess trendy is a better word. Ivy is not fully independent of her parents and maybe trys to keep her makeup on the down low, or it might symbolize that Ivy feels the most herself when dancing at the speakeasy. Or maybe she just prefers it for parties or partying.

Mitzi’s style and symbolism is also interesting

While Ivy’s outfit is ornate and playful Mitzi is covered in drip at all times, she is also heavily associated with peacocks. Peacocks symbolize beauty, wealth, and sinful pride. There is a double meaning to her peacock symbolism because peacock feathers have their own symbolism and it’s what she is seen with in her pinups especially her peacock feather fan

The peacock feather represents rebirth and hope.

Mitzi being insecure about her standing and was blinded by the glitz and glamour of the wealthy life style, sports an insane amount of drip, always wearing outfits and jewelry that belong in a magazine, always picture perfect, and compliments this with plumb eye shadow brown eyeliner and mulberry lipstick giving her a sultry look that goes well with her sleepy eye shape. This look more reflects what her true self has become, someone who has had a taste of the good life and refuses to go back.

Serafine Savoy is the opposite

Like Mitzi (kinda) she has come across good fourtune as a hijacker to a wealthy bootlegger, and wears expensive jewelry (I think) and cloths but has her own unique style that would NOT be socially except-able in her time

She can pull off dresses, but prefers either a snazzy professional suit

Or to let her true flag fly with her gangster pirate suit, bones and all

To complement all three of these looks she sports red eye shadow, black eyeliner and blood red lipstick. Giving her a dangerous look that gives her over all look an untamable aura. Unlike Mitzi’s mindset of never going back to being poor, I think Serafine could give a shit

Her and her brothers swanky suit isn’t treated any differently then if they were back in the swamp, it hasn’t changed who they are.

So she is more “I was homeless at 10 and lived in a swamp once, and bitch I will do it again!” At least that’s what I get from just having melted candles all over the expensive stuff and just treating the swanky stuff as a backdrop in any case. That kind of mindset was invaluable in the grate depression. It was the literal difference between life and death for rich people who lost everything and couldn’t except lesser work or a lesser life style

I don’t know anything about books and stuff, but when ordering the lackadasiy print, I noticed that the hardcover version is waaay less expensive than paperback

That's a third party merchant with one of the ages old original paperbacks, I imagine. I don't have any control over how they price it. I'll just say, uh, you definitely don't have to pay that much for the book if you want one.

Uggghhh, look, I don’t think ALL of them are inspired by or ripped off other pieces of media, I just don’t think that’s a common trait amongst some kicktoons. I’m not trying to crap on this genre of indie animation, in fact, I’m trying to make amends with the kicktoon community (except for Saberspark and Cellspex, they can both go to hell); I’m sorry if I upset you, I just don’t want to bicker with the fandoms of each show anymore. I’ll just say why they remind me of other work:

Hazbin Hotel=The Good Place, because it follows a quirky blonde lady (who is confirmed to be bisexual by the creator) whose trying to get people out of a hellish afterlife and into a heavenly one.

Helluva Boss=N/A

Murder Drones=Nier Automata, because it follows robots on a planet where humans have gone extinct (also, the characters in MD look EXACTLY like the ones in NA)

Lackadaisy=Cats Don’t Dance, because they both follow anthropomorphic cats in the early to mid 20th century (plus one of the characters from Lackadaisy looks like the main character from CDD)

Digital Circus=Nothing in particular, though it is confirmed to be inspired by/a spiritual successor to I have no mouth, and I must scream

Again, I’m sorry if I upset you, I was actually trying to explain why I’m frustrated by these cartoons.

Lackadaisy Makeup

I love the implication that Mordecai and Mitzi May were pretty good friends. In the 20s makeup was considered kinda scandalous, because it was only worn by actors and prostitutes and make up especially eyeliner was seen as rebellious, it’s supposed to be bad and for women so I would say it’s pretty special to be close enough friends with Mordecai to have him help. It being inappropriate is probably why characters like Ivy only wears her makeup while in full flapper attire inside the speakeasy. Come to think of it, I think Ivy’s Flapper outfit may be symbolic of her true self

Makeup is usually thought of as a cover up, something women use to hide who they are but with characters like Ivy it’s presented as a way to show who she is. She is heavily associated with Daisys light and the Sun specifically, and I think her gold eye shadow, mascaraed eyelashes and sparkly gold dress perfectly reflects someone youthful, beautiful, and radiates the warm glow of the sun. It’s a look that says she is the Lackadaisy’s beloved Jazz baby princess

Also side note about Mordecai in the picture because I need to talk about it

As a makeup lover and someone with OCD (not anywhere near the level Mordecai has it though) and as someone who learned about eyeliner in the 1920s. Mordecai’s facial expression completely captures the struggle. So that little pot of eyeliner he is holding? Yeah that’s basically powder, and way harder to use then todays pencil or liquid eyeliner. And you can tell from his face that if he messes up he is going to Chuck the eyeliner pot through the window so help him God! and I relate to it so hard I almost feel called out!!

If you honestly believe that Viv wouldn't do everything she could to stop people from working on the first season of Lackadasiy, you're either willfully ignorant, or you're truly unaware of how awful she actually is.
