Mordecai at heart is still that impoverished, fatherless young boy from the squalid New York tenements, trying to hide that with sharp tailoring and eloquent speech

Atlas was the surrogate father he never had, hence his loyalty and thirst for vengeance after his death

Viktor is a strong, imposing thug of a man, "built like a shit brick house" in drunk Mordecai's words, but unlike similar types back in New York, who he was crunching the numbers for, Viktor never seriously mistreated Mordecai, even during their petty, harmless (to them) arguements.

From pretty early on in their partnership, they had each other's back, something Mordecai had very little experience of.

He probably misses having that now he is more alone and in more danger than ever.
