Imagine the intense mental and emotional turmoil Mordecai would have been going through at that time.

Mordecai's boss/employer/father is dead. The man he felt he owed his life to, who took in a desperate stray and gave him a purpose, the literal shirts off his back, someone he was supposed to protect, and he failed him. Soon the initial horror/grief gives way to anger and a need to make someone pay. No one knows who is responsible, but Marigold, the second biggest gang in town, is the most obvious suspect. But he needs to confirm this suspicion, find out who have the order, then make them suffer.

But that requires him to go undercover to conduct his investigation, and to do that he needs to turn his back on Lackadaisy, Atlas's legacy, the speakeasy that has been the closest thing to home he has had since he was forced to flee New York and his mother and sisters. In means leaving the comforting familiarity is still offers even without Atlas, perhaps worst of all, it means cutting ties with the one other person in St Louis that Mordecai has come to care about. More deeply than he feels comfortable admitting to himself, let alone anyone else.

I dicussed before with @xvince-heliotropex about how the knceecapping is BOTH a selfish and selfless act. Mordecai feels like he has to avenge Atlas because of how indebted he still feels to him. The ideal scenario is that he can persuade Viktor to retire from his criminal life, but he knows him well enough to know his stubbornness, need to feel useful, maybe not wanting to leave Mitzi in the lurch etc will make that unlikely. That means forcing him to safety if it comes to that. Anything to make sure he doesn't get hurt worse later, or a nightmare scenario where Marigold order him to take out Viktor to shut down Lackadaisy once and for all, which if he refuses to do would kill his investigation (and soon after himself). Hurting Viktor, and living with the end of their bond and Viktor hating him, is the only way to avoid that

But there is probably a large part of him that doesn't want to do ANY of that. As tragic and painful as losing Atlas is, he knows going off on his own like that is a likely suicide mission. There is no guarantee he will even get answers.

Making it so much harder would be if Viktor "Vinegar" Vasko, noticing how much he is struglging, tries to reach out and makes clear to Mordecai that he understands how important Atlas was to him, but that they CAN get through this, both them as partners and Lackadaisy as a whole, so long as they stick together. How much would that mean to Mordecai at such a moment? Especially from someone has worked with near everyday for years, who has always had his back, who he can speak to more easily than anyone else, more so even than Atlas, who had always been so desperate to please.

The two of them have built up a strong reputation of their own over the last seven years, and between their combat skills, Mordecai's head for numbers, Viktor keeping their vehicles in top shape, and Mitzi handling the hostess/schmoozing side of things, they can survive. Maybe Mitzi's hope of preserving Atlas's legacy through preserving The Lackadaisy is a better way to honor Atlas? At least Mordecai wouldn't be alone. At least he would still have one person in his life can knows he can trust and rely on. Someone to live for rather than a dead man to die for.

But then the other harsher part of himself tells him he is just making excuses, being selfish for thinking about his own happiness, rather than getting justice for Atlas.

Why? Because of childish sentimentality? Because he's still that scared little boy on the train? Because he is scared of being alone? Because of a shabbily dressed, poorly groomed, one eyed, surly Slovak, with terrible grammar? One who certainly wouldn't stay his "friend" for very long if he knew the real reason why the anti-social Mr Heller actually likes being around him. Its for his own good anyway, he would be free to spend time with young Miss Pepper, that Elsa women, maybe even get in contact with that daughter if his. Isn't it wrong to keep him in this dangerous life so Mordecai can have him around?
