Speaking of Inko.
The differences between how Inko reacted/responded to Izuku’s quirkless compared to how Mrs./Mr. Aoyama reacted/responded Yuga’s quirkless is so interesting. Honestly, I wish there was a scene or something where Inko interacted with Mrs./Mr. Aoyama. The fact that Izuku could’ve ended up in Yuga’s situation is so so interesting. (You know what, I kinda need a fic where Izuku is the UA Spy and Yuga is the ninth user of OFA now tbh)
Also, I really wish that Inko got to interact with David and/or Melissa.
Actually, both yuuga and Izuku's parents have very similar responses to their child being quirkless and have very similar responses when their child gets a quirk.
There is this idea in MHA that being quirkless would bring the child a life of pain as they aren't able to fit in with their peers and the parents of these children take this incredibly seriously as we see with inko breaking down and yuuga's parents going to extreme measures to make sure their son does indeed fit in.
I think a key interpretation as to why the parents think this way is because the idea of a quirk and actually the translation for the word quirk in the early chapters was labelled as an "individuality," meaning something that makes the person unique. A quirk is essentially viewed as something that makes the person them, so its an int and contradicting idea that someone has to be unique, has to have a different power to fit in and if they don't have this power they won't be able to fit into society and will be shunned. Essentially, I find Ochako's comment about calling izuku plain interesting in the context of her talking about Izuku, who has only recently gotten a quirk. He is plain because he lacks an individuality/quirk that is his. He doesn't stand out because he doesn't have a quirk or power to make him a person in a society that label's and treats people so differently due to their quirks.
Again, the idea ends up being interesting and contradictory because someone who doesn't have individuality should be able to fit in, right? I mean, they are essentially perfect molds, no? However, mha focuses on the idea that quirkless people or people without individuality are invisible and rather have a lot of their capabilities hindered especially socially and economically.
Both parents are relieved when their child does get a quirk. However, that relief quickly fades away as they learn the price that they must pay for their child to fit in. A price far too great, one where the child has to sacrifice so much.
Both of these parents come to the conclusion that it would have been better for their children to stay quirkless. Both of these parents are happy that their child can chase their dreams bud realising the costs they would of begged for their children to stay quirkless.
Yuuga's parents say that they want to give him a chance at letting him chase his dreams, inko saying something similar when izuku gets a quirk and she becomes supportive of his dream. However, the quick fade as both parents see the reality of that dream and how both of their children are too deep in to get out, they try to do something but ultimately fail.
Alas, the only parent who actually has a positive reaction and is shown to be incredibly supportive of their quirkless child is David.
You can read the one-shot chapter here
However, I think that even with this, there is still the obvious theme because of your quirklessness you won't be able to chase your dreams and you won't be able to fit in with the other kids whether that be in all of you sharing the goal to be a hero or even when playing the popular kid game of heroes and villains that is shown in Melissa's chapter.

Honestly I’d love to see the Ben 10 fandom go more in-depth as to what the galactic audience’s thoughts regarding interspecies relationships and what dynamics formed between different species are like. Is dating To'kustars or Galvans when you’re not a To’kustar or Galvan frowned upon due to the severe height difference involved? Are there debates on whether it’s ethical to date a Vulpimancer or not? Is a Galvan dating a Galvanic Mechamorphs seen as a power imbalance? What would a romantic relationship between a Petrosapien and a Tetramand be like, or a queerplatonic one between an Ectonurite and a Lepidopterran be like, or even a platonic/familial one between a Kineceleran and a Pyronite?
Heheh, I really like thinking about the interplanetary community and it’s dynamics throughout the cosmos in the Ben 10 series, because I dunno it’s like rife with potential for worldbuilding and I guess political drama? Because apparently I like fictional political drama? I guess when it’s fictional it doesn’t affect anyone so it can be played around with in interesting ways.
Got some talking points down below hehe-
I have like SO MANY headcanons about how the interplanetary community treats vulpimancers, though to be fair I have like an unrefined list of notes about the chronology of Vulpin politics and ideologies that I haven’t neatened up yet, and one of those headcanons is the difficulties they face trying to prove themselves just as sapient as the other species; amongst all the bullshit that does bring, interspecies relationships are also affected by that bias. And the fact that you bring up the implied dynamic between creator (the galvan) and creation (galvanic mechamorphs) is interesting too because also, you can kinda also have debates about ‘is it ethical to date the first generation of a species’ especially in comparison to galvans who seem to have quite long lives, ‘is it ethical for a long living species to date a species by all means younger in their entirety than they are’ type questions-
It also isn’t just like the general interplanetary community though it’s also just the differing planetary communities (with their differing nations etc etc until we get to the individual) that also butt heads with each other- an ectonurite’s family really REALLY pushing for them to ‘get together’ with their queerplatonic lepidopterran partner before they have to host a funeral one day vs the lepidopterran having to explain to their hive that they’re happy with their ectonurite partner especially without the pressure of it being romantic there’s so many others that can and do *coughs into hand* ‘contribute’ to the hive population! Or or! The kineceleran not giving two shits about their pyronite sibling from another… pibling? Ah whatever- being so frickin’ slow because they can both bond over sports vs the pyronite wanting to share one of their thrill seeking traditions from back home with a race in their stunt car against their kineceleran cuz’ own personal wheels!
Lowkey I kinda made at least a concept for a tetramand/petrosapien couple which I based on a pseudo sumo wrestling match I saw at school once where one of the participants was slammed into the ground but they quickly switched their positions to roll the person on top so fast the crowd thought THEY were the one to win and not the person they flipped who won first- I mean! In my sphere of headcanons about petrosapiens and Petropia is that they barely got much chance to interact with the universe at large (being cracked open by the fulmini before Plumber intervention set them off plus doing something similar but… a little MORE to what they did on Revonnah) and so modern interplanetary discussions about any petrosapien relationship is ‘i thought they were extinct?’ and especially with tetramands intense courtship it may even skip straight to ‘oh they might as well be extinct’. Not exactly pleasant to hear, compounded by the rare potential someone happens to know - to put it in gross terms - a ‘suitable mate’ with the opposite sex of the petrosapien they’re pestering. At that point you’d better hope it wasn’t the tetramand/petrosapien pair because if the petrosapien doesn’t stab you over the offence, the tetramand would put you in your place, as legally able to as they’d can just to piss them off :P
Do you think if a galvan and a to’kustar were dating it’d be considered a ‘long distance relationship’ :P?
#ask#anonymous#vulpimancer#galvan#galvanic mechamorph#ectonurite#lepidopterran#kineceleran#pyronite#petrosapien#tetramand#to’kustar#ben 10#worldbuilding#i had a little less to say about to’kustars since it’s mostly a physical height thing than a cultural thing#but it’s still a very interesting talking point- how does one engage in a relationship with significant size difference#thanks to the reboot alien worlds series i do have like some influence from that lmao- for um i guess blatantly three of them#the interplanetary community i’ll say knows the least about to’kustars petrosapiens and vulpimancers either way#each for different reasons- petrosapiens for the lack of time spent being a cultural identity-#vulpimancers being unable to share their culture since it’s been written off countless times to be simple animal instincts-#and i think to’kustars because of their relative distance to the supposed ‘main hub’ of the interplanetary community#being born of cosmic storms and all- i don’t think you’d want to build your hub next to tumultuous space conditions#(how WOULD that work- being born of cosmic storms- in the first place? hmm)#i really really like headcanons that kinda revolve around the perspectives of multiple differing fictional characters hehe#even if it makes some of them jerks and asswads :P#it’s really fun to make a cultural perception that may or may not be incredibly biased- like an unreliable narrator!#my pinky finger has gone numb writing this- if there’s any typos blame the pinky for going on it’s unpaid 30 minute break

How the hell do you find every accurate representative culture fashion for the avatar gang? Like it pains me the hell how people this good and hardworking can find these gorgeous cultural clothes and accessories and draw them so well and detailed like you- TELL ME YOUR SECRETS (Please)
idk about accurate. at the end it is still a fantasy world inspired by real life cultures contrasting or soothed out to fit a charakter personality and traits. listen if i spot an option to have a older fire lord zuko with his titts chest out i will go for it and nothing can stop me not even accuracy i say this as if i didn't already do it in private with seethrough material hahah
there is not much secrets behind it though, sorry its research, fact checking. often even the most random things. at least that is my method. you go to google and type in what you need and would like to know. read the wikipedia article for some general understanding on the topic but them go to the source part and check these out. or like double check these. if reading is not your thing there are lots of dedicated youtubers or ticktockers that love to share and explain parts of their culture or tradtions (clothing included. depends on what you research.) contemporary to that or after that you build up your visual library by collecting images on pinterest, or google or websites covering the topic you are researching. make your own folders or pin boards.
an amazing blog for atla real life culture sources is of course or beloved: @atlaculture blog!
https://www.tumblr.com/atlaculture who recently began to dedicate some post in flashing out more water tribe and air normad cusine, also instruments. its a delight to read through.
of course you have an easier time with some research than with other. some things are clear others a contradicting some are barley documented. it is also necessary to have an occasional reality check. like reread your sources see if there is something new. replace what you misunderstood before. don't always go for what looks pretty and aesthetically good to you. there is a reason why things looked like they did. was it the material, was it protection, was it culture.
a part looking at contemporary photography i personally preffere to look at how people liked to depict themself at that time. Statues, wall painting, illustration, old fotos from that time and compare them to current pictures to see how they used to stylize this element or to see what was essential to them. thats probably my old art-history phase flaring up again though hahah. at the end it is also how you Interpret and headcanon the atla world for yourself. before i were able to redesign jet i had to figure out how i want to draw fire nation armor. because to me jet repuporses a lot of the armor from the enemy. a shin guard will be used as an arm protection. the red shirt he wears is fire nation, a shoulder guard that fits will just be used as it is. i just assume that FN armor is better in being fire resistent than earth kingdoms ones.
but fire nation armor is a chellenge on its own again. because is it tang dynasty? is it song? but the collar protector is a typical thai armor element. how do i combine that? is there a history behind it?
speaking about armor what would be the southern water tribe one? if it is lamellar ivory armor, how and why does it look so different by season 3 at the day of the black sun? did the southern water fleet separated form their home begin to adopt EK styles. switching out kuspuk and parkas in for sleeveless wrap shirts and armor with inside plating like they have in ba sing se? because that what was aviable to them?
(appart everything the talk of armor is in general really curious because... what do you wear when you go in to fight against fire??? in the poles you can argure that it is not a concern. if you burn you roll in the snow but in the EK... hm.. they dont have fancy heat resistand clothing like fire fighters have now.... armor is ment to cushion off impact and or slicing. our standard armors conzept can work well against earth-, water- and air bending (to some degree) but fire burns what do you idealy do against that? leather helps to some degree)
while the southern water tribe is clearly circumpolar people inspired (although lacking lots of world-building which you can kind of excusing it with... the war destroyed everything but also... uh.... its a nearly 20 year old show.... ) the northern water tribe shows korean or even mongolian elements. so what do you want to focus on? i personally like to make things connect because these characters live in one world togheter and trade and exchange happens. (yes even during a 100 year war or at least there had to have been a time of influence and the lack of exchange froze(*snorts*) this culture in time) you know... migration? and transition of style and life through out history.
maybe i overthink things to much for just drawing some clothes... -srugs-
#chip!ask#chip!talks#atla#atla worldbuilding#honestly i probably ended up rambeling here to much...#but yeha reasearch is just.... the key?#like for everything?#sorry#tbh don't ask me stuff because i still don't know things.... i know things but i am in this you know....#i know what i don't know - mode#and i don't know a lot and i am just drawing fanarts with a 40+ hours job on the side#i know some!#i guess#which makes me wonder world building kind of stuff...#like how is the EK palace layouted form the inside#whathappend to the AN aerias after the got whiped out#what consequences does the lack of airbender have to the world in sense of conection and exchange#were there really only bending airbenders?#are there still people out that belive in airbender philosophy#like the bending form died but people that lived near by still have similar dress food traditons and belives like the AN did?#is FN stuck in time too? because the royal clothing is tang and song styled but EK in BSS the fashion progressed into qing style#did kyoshi trade blue dye or blue fabric with the southern water tribe regularly before war?#trading pelt for fabric?#just... migration patterns???#yes? no? uhm.... okay i shut up now...

AU Thursday: Valicer In The Dark -- More Score & Story Ideas!
Because, uh, I have a lot of ideas for stuff I want to do in this verse, and the original list from a year ago has expanded quite a fair bit:
-->While I haven't gotten all of my stories into a proper timeline yet, I do have the first five sorted:
A) "Start At The Beginning...Sort Of" -- the story currently in progress, where the trio all meet, solve Victor's ghost problem and Ghost!Emily's Barkis problem, get wrongly accused of murder, run from the police (showing off their special starting scoundrel abilities along the way), and eventually end up in Elder Gutknecht's old place in Six Towers. This is sort of the "prologue" to the whole mess, putting all of them in the right position to start on a life of crime. XD
B) "A Murder Shared Is A Murder Thirded" -- yes, I did have Gale of Baldur's Gate III's line about how "a parasite shared is a parasite halved" when I came up with that title. XD As you might imagine, this is the trio first "unofficial" score, with them going to murder Bumby, because the fucker needs murdering. Of course, it's only after they kill him that they meet up with Smiler's parents and learn they were exonerated of the original "murder" by the Spirit Wardens. XD Still no regrets, though.
C) "The Van Dort Vacancy" -- came up with that title while looking at old Oxventure Presents: Blades In The Dark episode titles and being inspired by "The Cab-Con Caper's" alliteration. This story focuses on Alice and Smiler returning Victor to the Van Dort mansion...only to discover the Van Dorts hosting a party. Victor quickly learns that his parents never even considered the idea that he might be in danger when he vanished, only caring about the fact that Victoria Everglot married someone else (and is now due to wed Imperial Guardsman Christopher White after her first husband's death and disgrace) -- and after overhearing his mother declare "what ghost would marry our Victor?" decides fuck them, he's taking his stuff, stealing what money he can, and going to live with Alice and Smiler in Six Towers. Features special guests Barnaby "The Butcher" Fortescue III and Kasimir Jones from Oxventure Presents: Blades In The Dark, because it tickled me to imagine them doing a score to steal some of the Van Dorts' money at the same time -- only for Victor to catch on to what they're doing when he meets Barnaby at the party and go "if you wait five minutes for me to get my things, I will open the safe for you and give you a good chunk of the money inside." XD
D) The currently-untitled story detailing the gang's first "official" job as a crew, picked up when they go to dinner at the Ball & Socket Pub and Smiler overhears two workers from Coalridge discussing needing to get something back from their boss -- the "something" is a list of potential union representatives that the boss stole in order to call assassins on the people listed. The workers need it back to keep their nascent union safe. Notably, the score involves the workers saying they can't give the trio much in Coin, but they'll do what they can -- and then one of them jokingly saying, "Unless you want to be paid in furniture."
Cue Victor, Alice, and Smiler, who currently live in Elder Gutknecht's-not-exactly-comfortable house, going "what kind of furniture?" XD (A couch and a proper dining table, specifically -- old furniture one of the workers was trying to shift after inheriting some stuff from a late relative.)
E) "Who You Gonna Call?" -- As you might guess from the Ghostbusters quote for a title, this story involves the gang busting some ghosts. XD Specifically, it involves Bonejangles -- here a Whisper who does entertainment work for the Ball & Socket on the side -- deciding to school Victor in the art of ghost-catching by taking him on a job to catch a few Echoes (non-sapient ghosts who continually do the same thing over and over again in a loop), with Alice and Smiler tagging along for moral support. However, as it turns out, one of those "Echoes" is actually a Specter (a sapient, feral ghost who attacks people and possesses them to feed on their life force) who was biding its time... I felt a little bad that none of the previous stories really had any Whisper-y stuff for Victor to do, and decided he needed a "day in the limelight" score -- as a bonus, this score is how he gets his ghost-hunting equipment for later!
-->I also have plans for two possible prequel stories -- one showcasing the three times Alice and Smiler talked before the events of "Start At The Beginning...Sort Of" (I have the first bit, Smiler giving Alice the money for lunch, actually written already), and one showcasing some of Smiler's life even before that (I have a rough draft of the scene where they wake up the "morning" after inventing Joy Serum and go "bwuh?" over their newly-glowing yellow eyes). Good for filling in gaps and writing more stuff from Smiler's POV!
-->I mentioned Victor wanting to make a community greenhouse very briefly in the very first post I made about the AU -- this has expanded into a whole little arc about him finding an abandoned conservatory while wandering Six Towers and the gang fixing it up into a place where they and the other residents can grow food. In order, the stories would cover:
1) Getting enough money to pay a glazier to fix all the broken window panes (or doing something for the glazier in trade)
2) Acquiring the initial plants (which involves a trip to Barrowcleft and probably doing a job for someone there in trade)
3) Victor researching ways to infuse butterflies and moths with electroplasm to create radiant energy insects to help the plants grow; my idea is that he eventually tries mixing it with some of Smiler's Joy Serum -- and gets REALLY BIG bright yellow glowing moths, to his and Smiler's delight and Alice's concern
4) And then, once the place is just about ready to "open to the public," Lord Rowan, the only lord who maintains a permanent residence in Six Towers, rocks up, claims the greenhouse is his, and demands an absolutely ASTRONOMICAL rent from the trio to use it. Fortunately he proves to be a man who likes games when Smiler asks to negotiate, and tells them if they can break into his house and get the deed to the land from the safe in his bedroom, it's theirs (the trio smartly get this written down and notarized by someone in Charterhall first; Rowan is PIIIIISSED when he realizes he'll have to honor the deal)
-->A related idea would be for the gang to encounter some of the people in Charterhall (the neighborhood mostly made up of one big university) who are working on an alternative power source to help replace leviathan blood (which is refined into the electroplasm that powers everything electric in the setting) and need a place to test it. The trio decides that the alternative energy group can try to get the streetlights back on in Six Towers, and there's a score all around helping them get there safely, and keeping Lord Rowan's nose out of it until they're done. Not sure what exactly it will entail yet, but I'm eager to find out!
-->As stated in previous posts, the gang eventually has to go after Dr. Kelman when he puts out a notice saying he wants the three captured so he can submit them to his special "social compliance therapy" (aka do horrific brain surgeries on them and/or Hollow them by ripping out their souls). This is how Victor and Alice learn Smiler's birth name, and the whole trip proves to be a rather dark look at Smiler's childhood pre-running away and joining the Advocates. In fact, I already have one specific scene in mind of Victor finding a photograph of a young Smiler and noting that their smile in the picture looks incredibly strained, as if they're desperately trying to see the bright side. Also, Miles Cedars is definitely going to show up, and possibly get to murder Kelman. Because I like giving him the chance to murder Kelman. :)
-->Speaking of Smiler angst, I also have in mind a story where, on a particularly chilly night in winter, Smiler, Victor, and Alice are wandering the streets together when Smiler somehow falls into one of the local canals. Victor and Alice fish them out as fast as possible, fortunately, but the rest of the story proves a race against time to get Smiler home and warmed before they succumb to hypothermia. Featuring half-naked cuddling when they learn that skin-to-skin contact can be an excellent way to warm a chilled person (fortunately this is after they get together as a polycule, so the partial nudity isn't as awkward as it could be)...and Smiler crying in front of Victor and Alice for the first time when they can't stop thinking about the fact that, if they'd been walking with their fellow Advocates, said Advocates would have believed them when they said they felt okay...and they probably would have died. :( It is a story of many feels, is what I am saying.
-->So, when does my OT3 actually become an OT3 in the actual stories? Shortly after the Kelman score, in a story entitled "And There Was Only One Bed" (a play on the fic trope, and the fact that the house only has one good bed -- at the time the story starts, the three are taking turns using it, with the other two sleeping on cots borrowed from The Advocates). The story involves Smiler (who has been trying to subtly push Victor and Alice together, having noticed they seem to like each other) finally revealing to Victor and Alice that they're a pretty accomplished hypnotist, and offering to use their skills to help Victor with a nasty bout of insomnia. Victor agrees, with Alice wanting to watch for her own peace of mind -- cue Smiler hypnotizing Victor the next time the three of them are going to bed...
And a deep-in-trance Victor asking to be held as he falls asleep. Prompting both Smiler and Alice to cuddle him...and fall asleep against him because neither wants to get up and possibly disturb him after he does drift off. Meaning when everyone wakes up the "morning" afterward, they're all really awkward -- Alice because she's like "wtf why did I find that hot;" Victor because he's like "oh no I liked that too much and I have to process the fact that I'm in love with both of them now;" Smiler because "damn it I think I just decreased total happiness in this household should have kept my stupid mouth shut." They do their best to push through and complete the latest job they have though (a random "steal something from this rich fucker's house" deal, it's not actually important), which ends up with them having to clamber up onto the roof at some point --
And then Victor nearly falls off said roof. Prompting both Alice and Smiler to nearly have a heart attack and have their feelings toward him thrown into STARK RELIEF. Meaning they all finally have a chat once they complete the job and get back home, which allows them to finally discover that a) they're all willing to get into a polycule and b) that they actually have quite compatible kinks. Story ends with Smiler delightedly returning one of the cots to their parents (Alice insisted on keeping one in case one of them does want or need to sleep alone) and the three of them regularly sharing the bed. :)
-->I also want to do at least one follow-up concerning them starting to play around with hypnosis, and Alice insisting she wants to do something that will help keep Victor Victor no matter what they do to his head -- cue her and Smiler coming up with a safety suggestion that involves Victor picturing the core of his personality as a glowing tree, and then having him encase it in unbreakable glass so his personality can shine out, but nothing can get in. :) It's just a sweet scene that's been rattling around in my head for a while, and I'd like to put it to virtual paper.
-->I mentioned a "Lord E.A. Bethesda" in my Duskwall Slang post a while back, as a guy who gets labeled with the very-dangerous-in-Duskwall title "Welcher" (someone who hires someone for a job, but then decides to try and kill them instead of pay them; people who do this generally end up dead themselves). How does he get saddled with this label? By hiring the Three Pillars to steal a golden beetle statue from a rival (Lord Bethesda is a bug collector, you see), plying them with a hefty reward if they pull it off (which he can afford as the "Gambling King" of Duskwall -- his fortune was built off of getting lots of people to pay him small amounts of money in hopes of great reward). They do indeed pull it off --
And Lord Bethesda happily orders them killed by his guards, forcing them to escape his house in Brightstone. However, Bethesda (who has done this before) employs Plan B and has his guards herd them toward his garden and through a gap in the lightning barrier around his home --
Before turning said barrier back ON and stranding them in the HEAVILY ghost-and-horror-riddled Deathlands just beyond (specifically, they're in the Lost District, a formerly rich neighborhood that was abandoned once the lightning barriers went up). This leads into the sequel story, where the trio have to find a way back into the city while navigating the horrors of the Deathlands...which results in them discovering that Alice's Wonderland Jabberwock, inspired by an illustrated poem she read as a child, is actually based on a REAL CREATURE. Which has the horrible eye beam and wants very much to kill them. (And which may have the voice of Christopher Lee because I might as well throw in the nod to Tim Burton's Wonderland -- Victor is VERY CONFUSED as to why it sounds like Pastor Galswells.) They manage to kill IT instead by strapping Alice's Vorpal Blade (now a real thing, Victor bought it for her as a present) to Victor's ghost-catching kit while Smiler whacks together a sort of motorized skateboard thing for them to ride on and then using the electroplasmically-charged Blade to slice the damn thing's unprotected belly open. Alice claims one of the eyes as a trophy, and shortly thereafter they're found by the Spirit Wardens, who look at the corpse and go "let's just get you back inside the barriers, shall we?" Cue the the trio tromping back to the Ball & Socket and telling the clientele about their experience...leading to Lampblack gang leader Bazso Baz declaring Bethesda a Welcher, and the guy soon afterward getting killed.
-->Not that Baz is actually a friend to the trio -- for another future story has the trio invited to one of his fancy parties, supposedly to recognize how rapidly they've made a name for themselves in the Duskwall underworld. The three go, figuring it's a good way to keep relations good with their fellow criminals -- but are quickly rather disgusted by the party itself, as it feels pretty much like any party Nell Van Dort would throw (overly ostentatious and making it clear he's only in it for the power). They resolve to get through the shindig and head home...
And then Baz reveals that the actual reason they were invited was because they've collected a variety of bounties on their heads (including a big one from the Van Dorts, specifying Alice and Smiler have to die but Victor be brought home alive, and a huge one from Lord Rowan, wanting them ALL dead) and the other criminals want to claim them. Cue the Three Pillars having to try and find a way to escape from the house as the other criminals hunt them. Fortunately for them, they have unexpected allies in Baz's staff, with one guy in particular having a sister and nephew in Six Towers whom they've helped a lot (probably both in general with the greenhouse, and specifically by helping the kid when he got sick once). They eventually manage to get out with the staff's help, and limp their way back to Six Towers...
Just in time to see Lord Rowan trying to make a big speech to the citizens about "how your heroes are dead" and blah blah blah. Aaaand I should probably cut it there because this post is getting long enough. XD And I haven't even touched upon all the stories I have in mind that are based off of other properties I like! Guess that would be a good follow-up post to this one, huh? :p

the only 'negative opinion' i have abt dunmeshi anime so far is abt like color choices/palettes just not being the bestest but thats something i actually think is also not a strong suite of dungeon meshi The Manga, its always been something ive been disappointed by when i see something colored and im like damn thats kinda basic to me sorry :( but color choices in stories dont need to speak to me personally i dont care. i can go watch promare. i do expect the color usage might become a little better as the story progresses in the anime but again like i dont know if ppl have just .. not noticed that this criticism of the anime also applies to the source material
#im ngl i was disappointed when i saw like falins dragon form colors lol#ryoko kuis character design and worldbuilding is sharp and great enough to stand on its own#but it does look better without colors to me#bcuz a lot of her color choices just dont do a lot for me personally and thats like. fine. its whatever#trigger might actually be able to fill in where theres a lack here in the future. the colors arent bad in the anime#but theyre about consistent with the manga. which isnt my favorite#dungeon meshi

im probably gonna add a bunch of different factions to CD honestly. maybe even an empire or something?
more thots:
initially i wanted it to be a very nature/wilderness oriented world and i STILL want it to be that way so i can focus on exploration and such but at the end of the day any world with a society will make groups and will have ideals and i think itd be neat to have different factions with conflicting ideas pull at the strings of the story
currently the biggest (and pretty much only) faction is the hunters guild, which I took from monster hunter as inspo, where one organization is tasked with learning about and helping the ecosystem. I do rly like this idea and i wanna keep the whole 'respecting the environment' angle as opposed to having everything be a stripmine for resources like in other media, but after considering it for a while i think its naive to think something like that would be as global as i originally thought it would be
and it brought up a logistics problem with the message I wanted to convey, which is that if you dont respect the ocean you will Get Got. But the hunters (admittedly most of the ones getting killed in my lore) are probably THE most respectful ones so its kinda weird to have them be on the receiving end of violence always
Idk exactly how i want to move this idea, but there will def be like. different hunter guilds at least. the more respectful ones, and the for profit ones. and everyone shady who surrounds them
and the reason why i was considering an empire as well was because while im not interested in writing overarching plots about conquest and how territories evolve over time i do think its an interesting foil to have in an otherwise really nature oriented setting that also serves as the big bad guy everyone hates
and i think theyre narratively fun as well (where are they getting all the people and resources? wouldnt you like to know weatherboy)
#thunderclap#i dont remember if i have a tag for random rambles like this#i also figured out recently the reason why i have so much trouble worldbuilding recently is both bc of my lack of time#but also lack of anyone to bounce ideas back and forth with rapid fire#which is something ive lost for a myriad of reasons over time but it does affect me#so now i have to learn to just 'fuck it we ball' with myself again (and its what ive been doing for the past months but its hard fr)

so I've been watching the KH Union Cross stuff (in order, thank goodness, this would be so confusing to piece together otherwise), and like, I knew enough about UX that the appearance of the foretellers at the end of KH3 wasn't confusing bc I knew who they all were, but getting the expanded, explained lore and I'm like okay, actually these weirdos in animal masks are pretty cool, glad to know they'll show up (presumably) in future games
also I'm glad that memorizing the Latin names for the seven deadly sins is finally paying off
#I'm still going to have to comb the wiki or something later to figure out some lingering questions#which I probably still have bc I got a condensed version of all the games for just the story content#so any weird bits of minor worldbuilding that occur due to like gameplay stuff I'd totally miss out on#or I just simply Don't Remember what something was when it was explained bc I was distracted by the outfit designs or something#(I am so distracted by character designs all the time and KH outfits are off-the-wall distracting)#but like overall actually the UX stuff is very interesting!#love to see that lack of communication and poor decision making is not just limited to the old men of the series#(except Merlin he's fine actually he's the only old man who does not seem to make poor life choices)#like wow so many issues might have been avoided if decisions were made differently#which I mean the story works great bc the tragedy is knowing that things could have been better but would never be#bc the characters wouldn't have made the decisions differently bc of their characterization#and UX being Oops All Prequels means it was fated to be tragic in some way or another bc like#you do not get the setting of KH w/out the tragedy of the first Keyblad War (and possibly other things?)#so like I'm fine with the characters making poor decisions bc it makes a good story but also Hot Damn#KH is just generations of mistakes and poor life decisions#and the kids are actually really doing their best at every turn even if they're against the absolute worst odds#and still the theme of the power of friendships persists...absolutely excellent#oracle of lore

im having that thing where an AU I've made has spun so off the rails it can no longer really be considered a fanwork and has enough original elements to be it's own story but also to anyone familiar with the source material it is PAINFULLY obvious who the characters are supposed to be a spin off of
#DAMN YOU APPEALING CHARACTER ARCHETYPES!!!#i once saw criticizm of origibal work that was originally a fanfic say 'what many of these lack is good world building since the fanwork#relies on pre-existing worldbuilding of the source. it instead focuses on the character dynamics which are made more uniteresting and bland#as they lack the original context'#im obviously paraphrasing theres jo way id remember a qoute that long#my point is that im having like the exact opposite problem#there is so much new worlbuilding and so much that i added or changed about the characters but I feel like if I told this story ti anyone#theyd immediately be able to clock which characters this was originally supposed to be 💀😭#does anyone relate? foes anyone share my plight?

“X fantasy series is so well built!” What do the people eat in it.
Did the writers come up with what they ate or did they just put vaguely European “medieval” crops and faming practices in it.
What do their houses look like. How does the world effect their daily life. What meals do they cook at the end of the day?
What fish swim in the rivers in your “amazing, unique” mushroom forest?
#worldbuilding#writing#I’m tired of it pleaseee#the only elder scrolls game that does this right is Morrowind. there’s extensive information about Morrowind’s agriculture.#though the lack of information on fish in Morrowind vexes me I do love the crops and animals#better than the generic medieval ‘Todd Howard watched Lord of the Rings’ stuff in Oblivion onward#how did we go from kwama eggs and scathecraw to just. cabbages. not an original cultivar of cabbage or anything. just cabbage.

I'm reading a book i cant quite place.
I assumed it was in the uk, as i bought in amazon uk, and it does talk of oxford and cambridge, the british library and christie's.
But it also mixes pounds and dollars?
It was half a million dollars
It was 355k pounds
35000 usd?
Its ten dollars down the street
And then it references bathurst bus which seems to be an AUS thing
But it also references 'swampy september heat' which speaks of the northern hemisfere
It also uses university not college but they also use cellphone
'Sidewalk'
'dressing gown'
Basement
Elevator
The language is somewhat formal, and really rather vague, trying hard not to be specific about anything
I think it's mean to be set in the uk, they do talk about a character moving back from london, but it's wild how non-specific it is.
And now a mention of labour day!
Come on people! Put s little bit of effort!
Or write them about a place you know if you cant be arsed to do proper research!
I googled the author. She's canadian, which makes sense.
There is a whole bit about some woodland near campus that is very canadian, but does not fit at all in a book about the uk.
It's very distracting, cause it's like they couldn't choose where to set it, so there's a lot of references to the uk but someone the author forgets and uses words and phrases that make it clear it is not set in the uk, but never actually decides, like how hard would it have been to just mention at the start that its toronto for example.
Either create some decent worldbuilding or set it somewhere real.
I hate when it's just set 'somewhere in the northern hemisphere anglosphere' it's so lazy
#book blogging#currently reading#i'm enjoying the book even if i find most of the characters really rather annoying#but the lack of specifity with the worldbuilding does annoy me#booklr#book blog

I love thinking abt the cyber steam city side plots in the random card au because it's just bunch of goofy goobers being goofy goobers and Maya being incredibly intensely miserable constantly
#rat rambles#random card au#band posting#we have saya and kaoru being homoerotic heist rivals we have touko and pareo being music siblings we have chu2 being a lil lesbian#and then we have maya living with her 'I live with every memory everyone has ever had of my once best friend' situation#oh and also the distinct lack of memories from hina and chisato's perspectives#which is another big source of anxiety for maya because thats a pretty strong sign that theyre dead#which they arent but maya has no way of knowing that#hina just had her reality god tooth to keep her unefected and chisato was in the void#basically they both sort of had god shields#neither know that tho hina just thinks that everyone else is being really weird and chisato was again in the void#hina actually went a while without knowing that aya is a god now because shes not religious#it wasnt until she died and got better and found chisato and left the void that she noticed#from chisato's perspective they got lost in a cave blacked out for like five years and now aya is a god#oh btw most of the cast is about five years older than in canon so theyre mostly like early 20s except for pareo and chu2 who are 19#this is mostly because it makes my life easier when it comes to history worldbuilding shit#like I can make nanami misaki and rimi from the far far past without it being as weird#but it does mean that chu2 and pareo are old and scary now rip#to be clear theres no like sex or shit involved in this au the age up is Just to make worldbuilding easier#also it gives me more wiggle room with backstories since I have a lot more time to work with in each characters lives#this is rly mostly just relevant to tsugumi tho but a smidge to some other characters

Worldbuilding and Magic Systems: Things to Consider
Have a magic system in mind for your fantasy world? Here's a list of things to consider to help you tie this system into the rest of your worldbuilding, so that it feels more believable and realistic.
Source
What is the source of magic? Is it natural or man-made? Can humans use magic or is it a force of nature that only animals or other races can use?
Does magic originate from inside a person or does it require external items to use? If it comes from items, can the items be made? How long does it take to make the items?
Does the magic cost anything- money, stamina, health, etc.?
Can a person be cut off from being able to use magic? If so, how?
Prevalence
How common is magic in your world? Is it so common that everyone has seen it or is it a subject of myths and rumors?
How long have the people in your world known about magic? Has it always been there or is it a new discovery?
How much does the average person know about magic? How much do experts know? What do people not understand about this magic? Are there any common misconceptions? Myths?
Is magic revered or feared? Or if it's common, is it taken for granted? Are there any taboos surrounding magic?
How many types of magic are there? Are some more common than others?
Are there dedicated schools of thought surrounding the study of magic? Is it taught about in schools? If so, is it taught to children or only at the college (or equivalent) level?
Accessibility
Who can use magic? Who can't? Is it something that only the rich and powerful can use? Why? Or do genetics determine who can use it? Wealth?
Are there any physical limitations that might restrict who can use magic? For instance, maybe old or sickly people can't use magic because it requires a lot of physical effort. Does your society provide accommodations for people who can't use magic? Is a lack of magic ability considered a disability?
Does education level determine capacity for magic?
How easy is it to gain access to magic? How easy is it to learn about magic?
Power/Usefulness
How powerful or useful is magic for different parts of society? Military? Medicine? Entertainment? Art? Childcare? Government? Communication? Business?
How does magic affect the politics of your world? How does it shape the economy? Are there feuds over the use of magic? Do powerful groups in your world have an incentive to limit the use and accessibility of magic? Why?
What happens when people no longer have access to magic? Does this cripple their ability to go through their daily lives? How?
Mix, match, and cross-reference these with other elements of your worldbuilding to form a believable magic system that lives and breaths just as the rest of your world does. For every answer you give to the questions above, consider and build upon the implications of what that might mean for your world. A worldbuilder's best skill is the ability to ask "How will this affect ___?" So make sure you're always considering the ripple effects of each element you add to your world.
Happy worldbuilding y'all!

grumble grumble guess whos getting another book concept... (kicks an empty can)
#ramblings#mar does writing#at least i dont have to worry about running out of ideas -_-#oh hey actually yknow what i could repurpose- wait no paper snow wouldnt work bcos its got wolves#anyways the new concept is: ya elemental foxes#or maybe middle grade?#i think id want different kingdoms or states etc in it#maybe based around the specific element? but from a lens of conflicting accessibility needs in disability#ice foxes can go hang out in the desert but it might not be a healthy decision etc#w questions about what makes a good meaningful life#and questioning the idea of health being required to be happy etc#also ive written a lot on issues in animal fiction but jic anybody is new here.#all the foxes would be the same species and there would be no inherent genetic issues w kids etc#i think there may be some genetic component but not necessarily- like w irl disabilities#i want to avoid insinuations of eugenics etc in the worldbuilding#perhaps a generic fox doesnt have an element but can spontaneously develop one?#really could work well w some chronic illness allegories esp tbh like#immunodeficiency being an elemental fox w a lack of energy maybe? or like. 'energy#' themed. or nature like plants etc.#temperature sensitivities or prior conditions like heat exhaustion translates p well to ice elemental#etc etc etc#not going to put the Whole concept here#but im going to have fun designing this!#so many animal fictions have such. poorly done allegories#that are outright contradicted by the content of their own books#itll be neat to test how good ive gotten at constructing allegory

What To Do About Filler
I am deeply frustrated at the increasing usage of the concept of "filler" in writing, partly because how people are using it is completely separated from what it usually means, and partly because few people explain what they actually mean when a story lacks "filler."
So, in short, when this comes up, what people usually are talking about is:
A lack of subplots. Subplots are essential background to developing your story beyond the main action points. Subplots include romantic storylines, internal journeys (learning to deal with a trauma, for example), plots that are critical for secondary characters, etc.
No room to breathe (aka pacing). Keeping up the tension is a common piece of advice, but if every single scene is filled with tension, you're going to exhaust the reader (and yourself). Quieter moments allow characters to reflect, realize things (like feelings for each other), and give you space to establish worldbuilding and mood.
Rushed or missing character development. Giving your characters space to learn things about themselves, confess or realize feelings, and moments to make decisions and change are essential to a story. Defeating the big bad is important, but usually the inner strength to do so comes from the character changing over the course of the story.
I am losing the battle against using the word filler when you mean a story lacks other things. Other than shaking my fist at the youths, I suggest that if you get feedback about "filler," see if you can get specifics. Is it an issue with pacing? Character developments? Not enough description or worldbuilding? If a romance seemed rushed, at what points does the reader think there should be more interaction? Etc.
A note for fanfic writers: Your goals are often different from someone writing to publish, but hammering down what filler means can still help you as well. Narrowing down the point of your story ("in this drabble, these characters flirt without using words" or "sexy coffeeshop AU") and making sure to ask your beta readers if what you're writing fulfills that goal can help you figure out if your story is making the impact you want.
