Was listening to 32 Thoughts and a really interesting point about salary negotiations was brought up. If you take a pay cut and sign a “team friendly deal”, that can be seen as screwing other guys in the league over. Because it’s used against them by teams in their negotiations. So, when agents are negotiating deals for their players, there’s not only the component of what is good for the individual player vs the team but also what’s good for the nhlpa, which is a union. Friedman brought up that he actually will sometimes get that same thing brought up when he’s negotiating deals as a broadcaster. Other people in the industry have asked him not to compromise and take lesser deals because that also compresses their potential wages.

Elon Musk has chosen a new CEO of Twitter and plans to step down from the role within about six weeks, the billionaire entrepreneur said on Thursday.
Musk, who runs Tesla and Space X, did not disclose the identity of the incoming chief executive. He said he plans to transition to a role as executive chairman and chief technology officer, in which he'll focus on "overseeing product."
[Note: We have since learned that his replacement will be former NBCUniversal ad exec Linda Yaccarino. Source: CBS News, 5/12/23]
The announcement comes months after Musk pledged in December to step down as the head of Twitter as soon as he found someone "foolish enough to take the job."
Musk's tentative resignation late last year followed a Twitter poll posted by Musk in which 57.5% of respondents called on him to stop leading the company.
After acquiring Twitter in October, Musk made major changes to the company and its platform. In an effort to significantly slash costs, the company has cut roughly 75% of its 7,500-person workforce, raising concerns about Twitter's capacity to maintain its platform.

Authors Deserve to be Paid
it takes me between two and four hours to write a book chapter. For a twenty chapter book, that's 40 to 80 hours of work. If I got paid a Florida livable wage to do so - $30.56 per hour - I'd have to sell my book for whatever gives me $1222.40 to $2444.80 after Amazon (my publisher) takes their cut.
That's what I'd have to sell it for in order (hypothetically speaking) my book to sell one (1) copy that was then scanned in digitally and then free to as many people who wished to read it. (This thought experiment is ignoring editing costs, in both time and money, as well as the time it took for me to paint the cover.)
Now, my book is NOT for sale for that much. You ca but it for around ten bucks. The idea is that I'll make money over time, from royalties. And the time cost was just something I ate upfront.
We don't have a authorial compensation system I'm the U.S. that has one big sale up front. We have one premised on royalties.
That digital as a technology allows for infinite copies at a negligible cost for each copy doesn't change the fact that authors deserve to be paid.

Hey Copperbadge, I remember you writing about the audubon society. Are you aware of/ keeping up with the current unionisation/ strike issues?
I hadn't been following it closely, but I was aware there were an array of issues that Audubon was dealing with, from the whole discussion about his eugenic views to the labor struggles. (If you guys aren't familiar, their website is uh, not super helpful as a primer but informative overall.)
I'm not all that into birding (I do love birding bags, holy shit their gear is good) but my parents are, so generally any affiliation I have with birding orgs is through them; my mother is a huge fan of Cornell's bird lab and they use Cornell's app, so it was easy to gently guide them towards supporting Cornell instead.

And the Right is aiding and abetting their actions by helping them to hide behind the DEI excuse. 😡
Everyone’s getting a literal crash course in the knowledge that all consumer and worker protections are written in blood. They were not given to us at the benevolence of our corporate masters; the masters were forced to do these things or else face being dragged from their houses by an angry mob.
i feel like the boeing whistleblower case should radicalize more people. a major airline company is producing planes with less and less regard for safety and it's starting to get noticeable. man takes them to court, which would reduce profit at the cost of public safety. he fucking dies the night that boeings legal team asks him to stay an extra day. if nothing happens about this, i hope it gets through to people that america would literally kill you for a few extra cents

To add to the conversation, I’m going to link to a Reddit thread where someone discusses how their friend died from hustle culture at the age of fucking 32.
Serves as a heartbreaking reminder that hustle culture is bullshit.
Do the amount of work needed to keep your job and try to use whatever time and energy leftover to live your life. Do not give your all for a job that cannot and will not love you back. You only have one life to live. Don’t spend it constantly working.

I have a hard time just managing my part-time job. Working a job requires a mindset that’s just not natural to me. Luckily I live with my parents, so I don’t have to worry about rent, but while I used to dream about getting my own place, it’s not worth running myself into the ground over it.
Numerous studies have proven that a person’s ability to focus on a task drops off significantly after about four hours. John Maynard Keynes, aka the only economist who might have actually known something, believed that at this point, we’d be working a four-hour workday, and if we wanted to make this happen, we could—we have the resources needed to make this happen—yet we don’t. Technology has been sold to us as a labor-saving panacea yet each advancement, results in workers working harder and producing more for increasingly lower wages.
Seriously, read David Graeber’s book “Bullshit Jobs.” Will forever change your views on work. For those who lack money, you can read it in full for free at the Anarchist’s Library.
“If you have time to watch Netflix you have time for a side hustle” my side hustle is relaxing so that my body and brain can heal from by this nose-to-the-grindstone bullshit. I refuse to feel guilty for being a human with the need to relax sometimes. my side hustle is no.
