Ulysses stumbles through the vault door, a field to die in, he thinks solemnly. He’s earned this death, away from the bustling city that stretched as far up as it did into the sky; in the last bit of nature left on this godforsaken planet. His leg burns with the pain of a laser through it, he moves nonetheless. He falls at the base of a tree, a huge weeping willow that his wife was buried under what feels like a million years ago, during the war. It was what drove him to make the trojan horse in the first place. The horse that drove everyone in the city of Troy mad with a faint audio signal nearly undetectable to the human ear. It turned everyone in that city to murder and when the gates opened? No one was left alive. The only thing left was the pungent smell of blood and corpses. He had spent 20 years trying to redeem that decision and in the end he was here, none of it mattered anymore.
The persimmons in the field are next to him, they sit by the vault door and he watches it shut. Ulysses looks at those yellow flowers by the door and laughs. He gets to really die. Which is more than can be said for those trapped in the acheron, left in a half dead hell for all eternity just so the Olympians can have their knowledge and power. Ariadne, Herakles, Orpheus, and Oedipus weren’t as lucky. He thinks of the sirens, who coaxed him to make this vault and its trials to protect her and this tree. Daedalus had let 4 people die to open this vault and in the end none of their deaths mattered, this vault would never open again. None of daedalus’ whining would change that. Ulysses’ was sure that if daedalus didn’t die he would spend the rest of his eternal life agonizing over the vault and his greed. He might’ve even learned something…. Or he would spend the rest of his life trying to open the vault. Not that he could, the vault was equipped with a biometric lock that would only open for Him if he was alive and. Well, he feels the blood leaking from his knee and the pain in his chest and he knows it's too late for that. Ullysess lays under that tree, staring up at the sun for a good, long while, in his last moments, he thinks of Nothing. And Dies.
Outside of the vault, Herakles thinks of his death. He knows he’ll never avenge his family, never pay back Zues for his immortality and he would never be able to kill Zeus for making him “Change his mind” as he had put it. He knows he’ll be put in the acheron, he doesn’t really get to die. Daedalus gets to continue on, he gets to live as an Olympian, immortal and all powerful. Like Ulysess, Daedalus had taken only one shot to the knee, not 3 like Herakles had. But if Herakles could just get to this feet, strangle the bastard with his last bit of strength, maybe his death would mean something, he always was too stupid to die. So he does. He stumbles to his feet, all of him burning with a pain he can’t describe. He moves towards Daedalus, past Ariadne, Orpheus, and Oedipus, and he falls on top of him, his legs giving out. If he can’t strangle him, he might be able to trap him here until the bastard starves, Herakles is about 400 pounds and Daedalus is a tiny man. there's a reason he had 4 brutes do his dirty work, daedalus had never been one to get his hands dirty. Herakles tries to bring up his arms to strangle him but he can’t anymore. He laughs in Daedalus’ ears, and lets himself die, knowing that if he had any luck left in him they might never be found, and Daedalus, the first Olympian, might also be the first Olympian to die.

udad is a very serious and emotional album but it’s also based on greek mythology and as such is inherently kind of stupid

it's so weird to me that I keep seeing art in which characters played by Kofi (one of the two people of colour in the Mechanisms lineup) are the only characters portrayed as white?
this isn't, by the way, intended to draw any broader conclusions or imply that I'm reading in ignorance or malice. it's just a coincidence that I'm aware is probably largely based on the fact that both Arthur and Thor appear in a lot of media, almost always as blonde white men.
but it's very striking to me how many pieces of fanart for HNOC I've seen where Arthur is literally the only white person (which like. not trying to step out of my lane at all here but I do think that probably has some unintended implications). and I've also seen a lot of fanart where Thor is white and blonde and very on the Chris Hemsworth vibes.
(I haven't noticed it as much with UDaD but tbh I know Kofi sees Herakles as white (he says he thinks of him as Irish-American) so it probably wouldn't ping for me the way it does with Thor and Arthur)
#I'm very worried that people will read this as me trying to start shit#which I'm really not!#but it KEEPS happening#and ok maybe a little bit i am trying to start shit because maybe i would like people specifically to question#why they hc Arthur specifically as white and blonde in a group of people they see as brown or black#what it says to make the person whose role in the narrative is to lead people and whose role in pop culture is as the One True King#the only white character in a cast of black and brown hcs#and i have literally never seen Arthur be Not The White One#either multiple people including him are white or he's the only white one or nobody's white#like I've never seen hnoc fanart where like. lancelot is white and Arthur is not#with Thor there's the excuse that official art has him with light hair#but Morgan and i did the only official Camelot character art and my Arthur is an elderly Black man and his is a middle-aged Latino man so#the only place you're getting White Arthur from is your own mind which is in fact how fanart works but like. There's Room For Examination.#also both Thor and Arthur always seem to have beards#which i choose to interpret as Kofi's strong Beard Energy leaking into the work#even though i know that's just. How the mythological characters are usually portrayed.#the Arthur thing is especially weird because everyone seems to agree that Mordred is a dark skinned black man so like ???#I'm not saying that white people can't have dark skinned black children to be clear they absolutely can#but it does make Arthur's whiteness even more noticeable to me
