This year was a transformative year for me . I really had to work on personal things especially surrounding family. I got more into astrology and tarot, and also in some spells. Aluma Spotlight: Leslie Chavez

Please introduce yourself and tell us about your time at CSULB.

My name is Leslie Chavez – a first-generation Chicana graduate. I obtained a double Bachelor’s degree in French & Italian studies in 2018 and, from 2018-2021, I pursued a Master’s degree in Italian Studies. While at CSULB, I really enjoyed being a member of the Italian Department’s community because it was centered on both the similarities and diversities that exist within and between Roman languages and cultures. During my time there, I had the pleasure to take on the roles of both a student and a Teacher Associate for the department. I was thus able to acquire and pass on knowledge from experienced and passionate professors. Overall, I really enjoyed my time at CSULB because of the learnings, connections, and experiences I gained from my time there.

How have your experiences in the Italian department and language learning benefitted you post-graduation?

After obtaining a Master’s degree in Italian in 2021, I got hired for a remote teaching/tutoring job in an online private language school in 2022. I definitely consider this gig more of a “side hustle” because the hours are very little. I typically work 1-4 hours per week teaching Italian or Spanish language and culture to individuals of all ages. Post-graduation, I also volunteered to translate a few documents for fun. In reality, I grew more interested on the scientific aspects of speech and language, and specially on how to treat Speech-Language Pathologies. That is why I also begun pursuing a career path in 2022 that is also focused on language and culture but through the articulative, expressive, and receptive aspects of language. The field is speech and language pathology. I must say, my journey with languages post-graduation has definitely evolved throughout the years, and although I’m not teaching languages, I am currently providing treatment methods of speech and language. My connection with culture has also grown with the American Speech and Hearing Association’s ethical requirement to continue acquiring cultural knowledge throughout the practice and provision of culturally competent services.

Now that you’ve graduated, is there anything you miss about the student or campus life?

I definitely miss being able to connect with other professors and students on campus. Studying online limits the ability to have meaningful connections, so I sure miss being in-person.

What are your future career plans or long-term goals?

As I am 2 courses from obtaining my BS in Speech and Hearing Sciences and a license to practice as a Speech Language Pathologist Assistant (SLPA), I plan on finishing my courses and applying for my license as an SLPA in California. I also would like to return to CSULB’s Bilingual Speech and Language Pathology Master’s program, starting Fall 2025. I would like to become a bilingual SLP with the aim to have my own private practice that supports primarily underrepresented communities.

You have had the pleasure of visiting Italy, what is your favorite Italian food and why?

My favorite Italian dish while in Italy was Bologna’s Lasagna alla Bolognese and, of course, gelato!

It's true that breaking out of poor circumstances— whether it's living well despite having health problems, overcoming money or career problems, etc— usually needs you to believe it's possible on some level. You need to be willing to beat the odds in order to do so. But these accounts go several steps further than that and break into the same stupid woo that enables destructive systems from pyramid schemes to abusive bosses to, well, Republican policies. Shifting a systemic wrong to individuals in the face of overwhelming evidence is a clear sign that someone is trying to manipulate you. Politicians do it to make themselves and their cronies richer. Influencers do it because they make money off of people aspiring to be them.

And it's true, we don't know what she's cooking. You wouldn't know it from her Twitter account (which is almost entirely stupid stuff like this, interspersed with long-debunked nutritional BS like how you should always eat and drink separately from each other because your drink will "deplete the nutrients" from your food), but she's a semi-successful brand manager who managed 070 Shake, an artist I'd actually heard of before finding her Wikipedia page. It's not like this mindset hasn't worked for her at all. For all we know, she could be about to tag onto a project that will make her quite wealthy. But it *won't* make her a hundred million dollars, and Harris' capital gains tax *definitely won't* cost her any substantial amount of money, because even if she somehow gets hundreds of millions of dollars, the odds of that money coming in as almost exclusively tradable assets is minimal anyway. She gets hired onto projects already in progress and is paid a fee, she's not a founder who gets payment in equity. She knows this. She is choosing to mislead her followers anyway, because the appearance of maybe being successful is what gives her the veneer of professional credibility she has. Grifts, Spiritual Grifts, and Widespread BS

Recently I discovered the delightful videocaster Tom Nicholas. A charming man who covers economics, politics, and culture, he has a witty but laid-back style that helps him cover some pretty serious subjects. My introduction to his work was a YouTube episode on why everything is so grifty these days, which I recommend seeing. Well, after you finish reading this.

It’s hard to sum up, but the short form is work and the economy aren’t so hot, business gurus sold advice on how to make money (while their business was guruhood), and eventually you end up with grifts everywhere. I’m not doing it justice, but, you get the idea – looking to have grifts is sort of normalized now.

While rewatching this episode because I’m some kind of masochist, I began wondering what this meant for the spiritual grifts that I often analyze. Which is where this column comes from, so here’s my thoughts.

Spiritual grifts have always been with humanity as long as there have been humans. It doesn’t take much historical reading to find such things, from failed cults to faked miracles. But there’s something about today’s spiritual grifts where they seem to be varied, ominpresent, and a lot of people are in on them.

Which seems sort of weird. Are there this many chosen ones, like can someone choose among the chosen ones to narrow it down? Why can’t all the messages from the Space Brothers, you know, line up? How come the Ascended Masters only now care about vaccination? I mean, how did we get here?

When I stepped back thanks to Mr. Nicholas, the answer seemed depressingly obvious.

First, grifts always take advantage of existing technology. The printing press changed every country that created it or adopted it – and also meant people could more easily print and spread bullshit. History is replete with opportunity pamphleteers and scam artists and people who lied fast and wrote just as fast on spiritual “issues.” The internet just makes it faster than we were used to a few decades ago – and easier to start a spiritual grift.

Secondly, many of us exist in a culture that contains what I might call “Capitalist Idolatry.” We are told to make money all the time, to turn everything to a profit, to look for the next thing. We’ve had years of business gurus pitching side hustles and passive income. We’ve internalized this, and for many people this seems to be instinctual.

Third, the economy hasn’t gone great for a lot of people. How many layoffs, restructurings, firings, our recessions have you been through? How many people lost their economic progress, or never even got a chance to start any progress? People have been let down by the economy, and they’re looking to make money, and that culture of hustle is there waiting to tell us we can do it – and beat the system!

Fourth, American culture has normalized the spiritual grift. We have the so-called mainstream Christian grift, a historical lineage of tent revivalists, pass-the-plate evangelists, megachurches, and of course the televangelists and their empires. If people aren’t interested in that – or are rebelling against it – you can provide “alternative” spirituality and get your own grift going by doing something different while keeping the same old moneymaking routines.

Fifth, spiritual grift doesn’t require you to make anything unusual. Sure you can sell crystals and whatever, but it’s really easy to sell content which you can just make up and spew into the format of your choice. If you do want to sell merch you can get things manufactured or slap your brand name on some pre-made herbal medication or whatever. But for the most part, spiritual grift is no different than the various life coach and business guru scams.

Toss all that together and of course we’re awash in Spiritual grifts. They’be been around for awhile, we exist in a grifty culture, and the internet turned it up to eleven. When someone is flooded with TikTok, YouTube, and Podcast gurus, they might get ideas. They might even have some authentic spiritual insights, but that’s a seed for something neither spiritual or insightful.

What we face today in the world of spiritual grift is something more widespread and faster-moving than grifts of say a century ago. But nothing is actually unusual – we’ve all seen it before, throughout history and throughout our lives.
