They were too good to be true from what our family or the society of hustle culture have told us. Cuz all these people in the community aren't here for nothing and making shit up yk. I myself have manifested things that seems too good like huge amounts of money from unexpected sources that if I told people that aren't into loa they wouldn't believe me. This year was a transformative year for me . I really had to work on personal things especially surrounding family. I got more into astrology and tarot, and also in some spells. Not to derail but I looked up the account and it's all this sort of manifesting/hustle culture type stuff and I think this is a pretty clear throughline into why those accounts are full of shit. It's true that breaking out of poor circumstances— whether it's living well despite having health problems, overcoming money or career problems, etc— usually needs you to believe it's possible on some level. You need to be willing to beat the odds in order to do so. But these accounts go several steps further than that and break into the same stupid woo that enables destructive systems from pyramid schemes to abusive bosses to, well, Republican policies. Shifting a systemic wrong to individuals in the face of overwhelming evidence is a clear sign that someone is trying to manipulate you. Politicians do it to make themselves and their cronies richer. Influencers do it because they make money off of people aspiring to be them.

And it's true, we don't know what she's cooking. You wouldn't know it from her Twitter account (which is almost entirely stupid stuff like this, interspersed with long-debunked nutritional BS like how you should always eat and drink separately from each other because your drink will "deplete the nutrients" from your food), but she's a semi-successful brand manager who managed 070 Shake, an artist I'd actually heard of before finding her Wikipedia page. It's not like this mindset hasn't worked for her at all. For all we know, she could be about to tag onto a project that will make her quite wealthy. But it *won't* make her a hundred million dollars, and Harris' capital gains tax *definitely won't* cost her any substantial amount of money, because even if she somehow gets hundreds of millions of dollars, the odds of that money coming in as almost exclusively tradable assets is minimal anyway. She gets hired onto projects already in progress and is paid a fee, she's not a founder who gets payment in equity. She knows this. She is choosing to mislead her followers anyway, because the appearance of maybe being successful is what gives her the veneer of professional credibility she has. If that goes away, the illusion is broken and she's just another Twitter account among millions.

Grifts, Spiritual Grifts, and Widespread BS

Recently I discovered the delightful videocaster Tom Nicholas. A charming man who covers economics, politics, and culture, he has a witty but laid-back style that helps him cover some pretty serious subjects. My introduction to his work was a YouTube episode on why everything is so grifty these days, which I recommend seeing. Well, after you finish reading this.

It’s hard to sum up, but the short form is work and the economy aren’t so hot, business gurus sold advice on how to make money (while their business was guruhood), and eventually you end up with grifts everywhere. I’m not doing it justice, but, you get the idea – looking to have grifts is sort of normalized now.

While rewatching this episode because I’m some kind of masochist, I began wondering what this meant for the spiritual grifts that I often analyze. Which is where this column comes from, so here’s my thoughts.

Spiritual grifts have always been with humanity as long as there have been humans. It doesn’t take much historical reading to find such things, from failed cults to faked miracles. But there’s something about today’s spiritual grifts where they seem to be varied, ominpresent, and a lot of people are in on them.

Which seems sort of weird. Are there this many chosen ones, like can someone choose among the chosen ones to narrow it down? Why can’t all the messages from the Space Brothers, you know, line up? How come the Ascended Masters only now care about vaccination? I mean, how did we get here?

When I stepped back thanks to Mr. Nicholas, the answer seemed depressingly obvious.

First, grifts always take advantage of existing technology. The printing press changed every country that created it or adopted it – and also meant people could more easily print and spread bullshit. History is replete with opportunity pamphleteers and scam artists and people who lied fast and wrote just as fast on spiritual “issues.” The internet just makes it faster than we were used to a few decades ago – and easier to start a spiritual grift.

Secondly, many of us exist in a culture that contains what I might call “Capitalist Idolatry.” We are told to make money all the time, to turn everything to a profit, to look for the next thing. We’ve had years of business gurus pitching side hustles and passive income. We’ve internalized this, and for many people this seems to be instinctual.

Third, the economy hasn’t gone great for a lot of people. How many layoffs, restructurings, firings, our recessions have you been through? How many people lost their economic progress, or never even got a chance to start any progress? People have been let down by the economy, and they’re looking to make money, and that culture of hustle is there waiting to tell us we can do it – and beat the system!

Fourth, American culture has normalized the spiritual grift. We have the so-called mainstream Christian grift, a historical lineage of tent revivalists, pass-the-plate evangelists, megachurches, and of course the televangelists and their empires. If people aren’t interested in that – or are rebelling against it – you can provide “alternative” spirituality and get your own grift going by doing something different while keeping the same old moneymaking routines.

Fifth, spiritual grift doesn’t require you to make anything unusual. Sure you can sell crystals and whatever, but it’s really easy to sell content which you can just make up and spew into the format of your choice. If you do want to sell merch you can get things manufactured or slap your brand name on some pre-made herbal medication or whatever. But for the most part, spiritual grift is no different than the various life coach and business guru scams.

Toss all that together and of course we’re awash in Spiritual grifts. They’be been around for awhile, we exist in a grifty culture, and the internet turned it up to eleven. When someone is flooded with TikTok, YouTube, and Podcast gurus, they might get ideas. They might even have some authentic spiritual insights, but that’s a seed for something neither spiritual or insightful.

What we face today in the world of spiritual grift is something more widespread and faster-moving than grifts of say a century ago. But nothing is actually unusual – we’ve all seen it before, throughout history and throughout our lives.

Here's A Tip For You

We have all heard it said before. “Money talks, and BS walks.” It applies in multiple facets of life, and it is about to be put to the test by DoorDash, the third-party delivery service that brings your dinner right to your door.

The company is now conducting a market test in their app in which they inform customers, “Orders with no tip might take longer to get delivered — are you sure you want to continue?” The implication is that a small tip, or—gasp—no tip at all, means your order will probably be deprecated. You’ll eventually get your dinner, but it will be cold and mushy.

DoorDash drivers are essentially gig workers, and work for tips. They also have the option of selecting which orders they wish to deliver. Being the good capitalists they are, they choose the orders that give them the highest yield for their efforts. If they choose to deliver dinner out of the goodness of their heart to someone too cheap to leave a tip, that’s on them.

Remember, time and gasoline are money.

But there may be some unintended consequences. Since DoorDashers can see the tip amount, and now DoorDash is helping aid and abet the process with passive-aggressive tactics, we may wind up with an economy of the wealthiest and most capable of tipping receiving the best service. Why, it’s almost like having a Fast Pass at Disney and having your own special line. You know. The one that gets to go in first.

Sure, those of more modest means could still bump the line simply by being extra generous, but how long can you keep doing that?

Tipping culture is a huge part of American society. It befuddles international travelers, for whom tipping is strictly optional in their homelands. It is built in to the menu price, and if you leave a tip, it is because you are grateful for someone going above and beyond their normal duty.

This last summer in Costa Rica, I noticed how they calculate the bill. It’s simple. There’s the total of all entrees and beverages, then 13% sales tax is added, followed by 10% mandatory gratuity. No need to pull out the calculator, nor wonder whether the tip should be based on pre- or post-tax numbers.

A big part of the problem here is that the federal minimum wage for servers is $2.13 an hour, which, of course, is a joke. It means that servers depend on tips, and I am sure it motivates them to hustle. It also means they may try to suck up to certain customers, either because they know them from previous visits, or they profile them. Remember, these people are capitalists too. Revenue maximization is no different here than it is for a company like Amazon.

But third-party deliveries are different. The tip is offered up front. They know which orders are the ones to snag. Can you imagine if it worked this way in restaurants? Imagine this:

You walk into Nick’s Bar & Grill, and the host greets you.

“Welcome to Nick’s! Will that be tipping or no-tipping?”

“Oh, tipping, of course!”

“Alright, how much? Fifteen percent? Twenty percent? Twenty-five percent? Or more?”

And depending on your answer, you are then whisked away to a table, and the tables are segregated by tipping amounts. The best tippers will be seated near the fireplace or big screen TV, while everyone else will be seated in less-prime locations. And pity the poor no-tippers, who will be seated out on the patio. In January. When the cold winds blow.

I doubt this idea would fly.

Delivery is a huge business. Last quarter DoorDash scored $543 million sales, a 24% jump from Q3 last year. As for YTD sales, revenue is up 27%. And this is just one among several delivery companies.

At a time when many Americans are feeling that everyone wants a tip, from your barista to the guy getting the door at your hotel, it can all be a little tiring. You know the drill. The clerk spins the tablet around to you, and there you have it…the tip question. If I am buying from someone who is simply performing their job as prescribed, I am less likely to be generous.

But if I know their very existence depends on tips, then I am very generous. In fact, in those situations, I consider the server to be my employee for that very brief moment in time, and it is my duty to pay them well, commensurate with their service, of course.

Still, the new P2P economy sees things a little differently, and tips are stated up front. It thus becomes a bidding war among the customers, and if you want those wings delivered in time for the game, you can prime the pump simply by tipping more. Everyone else will have to wait until halftime to eat.

Of course, the alternative is to go do takeaway yourself. But that takes time, as well as the money for gas. We are now back to square one, and why third-party delivery firms exists in the first place. We ain’t got time for that. Here, take my money. And that’s no BS.

this is the most invested we were for any job opportunity that matt has received since last year. we were thinking, talking and stressing about it for two whole weeks. i was venting a lot to my poor friend K. however, after assessing the contract, we noticed some discrepancies with what was said verbally over the phone. they mentioned the contract was for 2 years, with a 30 day notice for termination; yet, the contract stated 3 years with a 180 day notice. they refused to state exactly how often matt will be working at each of the two hospitals he would be assigned to. when asked about the relocation package, it was like pulling teeth to get an answer. i understand that their company was just bought out by UHG so there may have been some honest misunderstandings - however, the discrepancies didn't sit well with us.

i also work with physician contracts and we spell everything out pretty clearly (including hospital assignments and specific job duties) and are responsive if they have any concerns or questions. in regards to his job search, i learned that i get invested too quickly, create all these scenarios and expectations in my head, and set myself up for disappointment. this was a whole roller coaster ride. in the future, i told matt that he should only apply to larger hospitals, preferably teaching hospitals or kaiser. i am okay with living a bit further away from LA if that means his working conditions would be better. the whole point of taking the NYU job was for it to open doors at other academic settings.

we talked about continuing to do this semi-long distance situation, where i am in LA 3 or so weeks at a time, until he finds something. obviously, it's not my ideal situation. i look forward to the days where we don't hop on a plane as often and can have an easier life. i feel the pressure to move forward with our lives - to get married, settle down, have kids, etc. due to our ages. however, it is all perspective and how i choose to approach a situation. it also helps to hear from older friends that i don't have to be in such a rush. in the grand scheme of things, we're still young and at least are financially stable and moving in the right path. though it is also difficult personally to also not feel like life is "passing us by" because of ties to this medical journey.

living in LA has been detoxing. the quietness, slower paced life, and living with my semi-retired parents and grandma and babysitting my baby niece (who in general have little worries) is like a retreat. i almost have reverse culture shock and feel anxious due to how slow people move here. i need decompression time like this in order to face the hustle and bustle of nyc.

to recap one on year since attendinghood life:

started tracking our finances via ramit's CSP; lots of progress made and we have a positive net worth. matt's catching up in his retirement accounts and HYSA

took countless vacations and small trips to find out that we now prefer the relaxation/nature vacations. we're already overly stimulated in our daily lives and it's not as enjoyable to vacation in another big city. crashed and burned at the 6 month mark as a wake up call

completed my BS in accounting degree (oops, i haven't used it - should look into getting a CPA) and got a promotion whoo

we learned a lot about how to live more mindfully and healthily (still a work in progress). time off > more money - though this is something that matt still struggles with. i really do believe that environment matters so much.

we both benefitted a lot from therapy (still work in progress). though i realize that therapy is almost a replacement for having friends/family and like a band-aid for living in such a stimulating city. it makes sense that therapy is more needed when we are in NYC versus in LA.

We romanticize leisure, but I was thinking about something I saw recently about the bs if manifestation, and I was thinking about how much better it is to romanticize hard work. I’m not talking about romanticizing hustle culture, but romanticizing challenging yourself. Romanticizing the actual work that goes into your goals. I feel like we all want so much but don’t want to do the work to get there. We fantasize about being in that accomplished state, but we don’t fantasize the work that it would take to get there.

Imagine if we spent more time romanticizing that thirty minutes of meditation, or romanticizing studying that language we’ve been meaning to learn. Romanticizing sitting still and breathing. Romanticizing listening to books in another language, or spending an hour practicing vocabulary. Imagine romanticizing meal prepping, and exercising. Imagine romanticizing sitting down and journaling or writing that novel.

As much as I do hate hustle culture, there is a romanticism in it that I think is important. Sitting around making vision boards isn’t doing the work. Sitting around talking about what you want on social media isn’t doing the work. Doing the work is doing the work. And I want to start romanticizing the work I have to do to change instead of that dream “end goal.”

I AM an artist and this person being a gatekeepey weirdo sucks. Do art that you enjoy because you enjoy it. If you want to draw the same thing for 20 years go for it. Art should not be about improvement or grinding or hustle culture bs. Do it because you love it. Because it brings you joy. Because it brings other people joy. A lot of the time, cringe is where the love of a thing is, and that’s perfectly fine. Sometimes I am that person driven relentlessly to improve and it honestly can suck the life out of something you enjoy.
