Embarking on a fresh voyage, Sarah Davachi drones out at sea on ‘Possente Spirto’ from The Head as Form’d in the Crier’s Choir, her latest collection for solo performers and chamber ensembles. The title of the piece alludes to the ‘Possente spirto, e formidabil nume’ of the opera L’Orfeo by Claudio Monteverdi, an aria which captures the moment when the bard Orpheus strives to convince the ferryman Charon to allow him to pass into Hades, from where he hopes to recover his wife Eurydice, who has died and gone into the underworld after being bitten by a snake.

"Jordi Savall directs Le Concert des Nations, La Capella Reial de Catalunya and the leading soloists of early opera in a beautiful period production of Monteverdi's favola in musica staged at Barcelona's Gran Teatre del Liceu in 2002. Gilbert Deflo's stage direction reflects the sublime art and imagery found in Mantua's Palazzo Ducale, with its famous Hall of Mirrors, where the opera was first performed in 1607."

Most Illustrious Prince, my Lord and venerable Master. The Orpheus tale that was given its first performance under your protection, Most Illustrious Prince, on the small stage in the Academia degl’ Invaghiti, will now appear in the large Teatro de l'Universo in order to be presented to the broad public. There is surely no reason to present the work under a name other than yours, Most Illustrious Prince; thus in all modesty I dedicate it to you, Most Illustrious Prince, who like a good star stood by its first performance with the rays of your Grace, that you, Most Illustrious Prince, may favor the further development of its life and I may hope it will be as lasting as mankind itself. I beseech you, Most Illustrious Prince, to accept this token of my devotion with the great magnanimity that characterizes you and that fascinates all who come into contact with you. Thus with greatest respect I bow before you, Most Illustrious Prince, and pray to God that He may fulfill your every wish, Most Illustrious Prince. Most Illustrious Prince, my Lord and venerable Master. Mantua, August 22, 1609 Your Grace's most humble and obedient servant Claudio Monteverdi
In 1953, Nikolaus Harnoncourt founded the CONCENTUS MUSICUS WIEN with several young musicians from the ranks of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. A special ensemble for early music, Concentus musicus performs music on original instruments - "not for historical reasons, but rather for artistic ones because music from every era can be most vivaciously and convincingly rendered with contemporaneous means of sound production." In 1 957, the ensemble gave its first public concert at Schwarzenberg Palace in Vienna. Since then, Concentus musicus has performed in a series of concerts there each year. The first recordings for Teldec, then called "Telefunken", were made in 1963. At that time, the ensemble toured Western European with a program which included Austrian Baroque music and pieces such as Bach's Brandenburg concertos. The first concert tour in the USA and Canada followed in 1966. A version of Monteverdi's Il Ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria transmitted in a Viennese manuscript was performed for the first time in 1967. Period instruments were also used on their numerous recordings of operas, orchestral works and choral pieces which were distinguished with "The German Record Award." The ensemble received the ward for recordings of Bach's B minor Mass Ind Monteverdi's Orfeo, among others. In 1970, one of the biggest projects in record. ing history was initiated: Recording all of Bach's cantatas at Teldec. In addition to this great undertaking, which was completed in 1989, Harnoncourt and his ensemble have primarily recorded works by Monteverdi, Purcell, Bach, Händel and Mozart.

These are my two favorite performances of Monteverdi's L'Orfeo. Last night, I enjoyed the CD set along with a delicious bottle of Sauvignon Blanc.....and, of course, a lot of water.

tagged by @catilinas -- merci ! -- to post five songs i have been listening to on repeat recently (apologies for the spotify, it's a character flaw). i will be brave and first use statsforspotify to give the apparent objectively true answer for song most repeated this month, even though it is embarrassing
God idk. Anyway moving on
this song may be one of my longest-standing obsessions singlehandedly! i play it constantly on every instrument i own. out on the ocean the stars were all gone my heart was broken lost and alone and darling you came to me like a beacon leading me home
have i ever mentioned i'm having kind of a katabasis moment recently
i have this theory that what makes townes' love songs so universally devastating is that their promises are often very very small and simple. "if you needed me, i would come to you" / "won't say i love you, babe, but i will not do you wrong" / "close your eyes i'll be here in the morning." not out of a lack of commitment but simply because when the world is so wide and so full of sadness that's the best you can offer. gets me every fucking time
seh die lichter meiner stadt! mein traum hält mich wieder wach!
i shall tag @wei--wuxian @voidcoretxt @e-vultures @meichenxi @weidli (again) @waxingdissolute and kris you dont actually have to do it but i bet youve been perceived again

Your gentle words re-open in my heart love’s ancient wound.
^ The caption references Pluto’s part in L’Orfeo after Persephone’s thanking him for having mercy on Orpheus and Eurydice: “Tue soavi parole d’amor l’antica piaga rinfrescan nel mio core.” The melody is so sweet. The words are even sweeter in Italian. Look for 'L'Orfeo: Act IV: Tue soavi parole' if you're curious to hear.

watching la chimera and i am in love with the way josh o'connor speaks italian (it's bad) and my dad loves that they keep using l'orfeo by monteverdi in the soundtrack. and actually i think you all would love to know that it's probably the first actual opera ever and it's of course based on the story of orpheus and eurydice

Claudio Monteverdi - L'Orfeo Garsington Opera
https://www.youtube.com/embed/ijFNYStD1hw
Orpheus sings his way to the underworld in pursuit of his wife Euridice, overcoming all obstacles by the power of his voice. He finds her but loses her again. How long do we grieve a loved one? How long do we hear their voice echoing after they have gone?
Aavailable until 20 April 2023: 👇 📺 👇
youtube
In 1607, Claudio Monteverdi created his Orfeo, for the Carnival opening at the Court Theatre of Duke Vincenzo I in Mantua. Billed as a ‘musical fable’, here was a new form where characters are brought to life with poignant human feelings. Orfeo’s dramatic power gave birth to what we call opera today. As in the original performance in an intimate space in Mantua, Garsington’s summer 2022 production sees the singers and musicians very close; the instrumentalists are part of the action, onstage and visible. Early music specialist Laurence Cummings conducts the musicians of The English Concert. Arielle Smith choreographs singers and dancers; the chorus is a constant presence and critical to the storytelling. Ecstatically received by audiences and critics alike, here is an evening to do justice Monteverdi's genius and power to encapsulate the human condition through music, movement and song.

L'Orfeo
L'Orfeo https://ift.tt/z7YeZPA by Carpe_Per_Deiem “Granger made it clear enough that she didn't… expect to see me after the war.” Expect was an easier word to say than want. “And you think she will expect to see you now?” Draco took another sip of the whiskey. Yes. She is in danger. She knows I will always come. The answer came from the creature in the darkest part of him-- a vast, black expanse that he had mostly kept quiet since the war. Now, some scaly thing unfurling its wings for the first time in years. “I don't particularly give a fuck what she expects.” Words: 2927, Chapters: 1/?, Language: English Fandoms: Harry Potter - J. K.
